Says Irani, who is also the producer and creative head of the show: "I wanted to work with Kiran for years but couldn't get an opportunity. I've known him for seven years now, from the time he was doing Ghar Ek Mandir. I had decided then that if I ever produce a show of my own, I'll cast him as my actor."
What makes her full of praise is not because they've known each other for a long time but Karmarkar's potential as an actor that Irani feels is rare to find. "There are actors who become great because of the storyline and there are some who make their role memorable with craft. I feel Kiran falls in the second category," she says.
Karmarkar, on the other hand, can't stop thanking his lucky stars after he grabbed this opportunity with open arms. "Smriti is a very co-operative person and a great actress. I think our on-screen chemistry will work really well," he says.
It is not Irani's acting alone that impresses Karmarkar. "Her willingness to experiment and break her Kyunki image is what makes her different. I had signed the show before my character was introduced and after watching the first few episodes, I was convinced that I had taken the right decision."
The makers, however, believe the USP of the show is not the casting coup but its concept.
"It was actually Ekta's idea to experiment and do something different from other Balaji soaps. It is a show that is typically not Balaji," says scriptwriter Kamlesh Pandey. The characters have been carved out keeping in mind realistic problems people confront today.
For Kiran, playing a variety of roles is all that matters. Quitting a show that earned him the maximum recognition was not easy, but like other actors who have bid adieu to their maiden success stories, he too thought on the same lines. "I was tired of playing the same character of Om for years. I desperately wanted to do something different and knew I am capable of doing that. Life had become too monotonous on Kahaani," he says.
"In Irani's new show I'm playing the role of an abnormal person. As the story progresses, there are several twists and turns to it," he says.
Having worked with the two leading ladies of television, Saakshi Tanwar and now Smriti Irani, he plans to earn a new distinction -working with the third one too, Shweta Tiwari of Kasauti Zindagi Kay.
Post Kahaani, Karmarkar remained out of action for quite a while. "Out of the last 365 days, I have shot for just 21 days. The reasons being that I was waiting for a good role and my illness too made me stay away from the limelight," he says. Simply put, the pairing of the two materialised Kyunki it's a new Kahaani. |
