Till love do us apart

TV's leading ladies seem to marry for all reasons except the best, says our correspondent
Rachana Nakra
For the women in today's soaps, preserving the Bharatiya sanskriti is very important. So much so, that they live in joint families, only wear sarees—even to bed—and consider marriage a sacred institution. In fact, marriage figures so high on their priority list that they can never do with just one. And their reasons for getting married? They are just as myriad as their husbands.

Getting married to the man they love is never a choice. Otherwise, the soap would have to end after 50 episodes. So the first marriage is invariably a compromise or a sacrifice, made for either of the following reasons—the family's happiness, to uphold their image in society, save the family or lover from financial troubles; or it could be a devious plan by the ubiquitous vamp. The leading lady is left with nothing but an older man for a husband whose first name also she doesn't know. Mr Bajaj, Mr Walia, Mr Mehra, Mr Ahluwalia, anyone?

Pati-vrata Parvati from Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki is the latest to join this bandwagon. After more than 30 years of her onscreen marriage to the same person, she has finally decided to take the plunge again. The marriage of convenience is to inconvenience Mr Mehra, who she believes has killed her first husband. Since the long arm of the law never makes an appearance in these soaps, Parvati decides to take things in her own arms.. er.. hands.

Kashish from Kahin To Hoga gets married to Sujal because she thinks that he is her first husband's killer. A car crash, a plastic surgery and a broken marriage later, Kashish has now tied the knot with Mr Ahluwalia because she thinks he may have killed her sister. Perhaps the police academy should start a new training course in 'how to solve a murder with marriage.' Everyone's new favourite, Kasamh Se, has Bani taking saat phere with Mr Walia to uphold the family dignity because the original bride runs away with her lover on the wedding day. In Kasauti Zindagi Kay, Anurag's mother had schemed her way into getting him married to Komolika. His first love, Prerna, was left to mope and give birth to their love child. Of course, the leading lady couldn't be left without a man for long, so enter business tycoon Rishabh Bajaj who agrees to help Anurag in his financial troubles only if he can have Prerna. So while Prerna married the rich guy, Anurag was left to despair. These are the marital sagas of just some of the leading ladies. If we get started on the marriages of the Pallavis, Komolikas and other vamps on the telly, it'll have to be made into a book.
