He made a face while she angrily stuffed that disgusting meal into his mouth....it not only smelled bad, but it also had that sickening taste which always makes you want to loathe food in general.....
Mukti(giving him a stern look): stop making such faces...it makes u look even worse than usual.
Prem(gulped down his last bite hurriedly after hearing this): what! excuse me, but I don't think u've noticed how many girls fall head over heels for this face...
Mukti: or it might just be that they're so ugly themselves that they can't get anyone better than you.
She started laughing at prem's expression when she said this....for once, he seemed at a loss for words.
Mukti: ok, no need to look as if u didn't already know this....in any case, u should have realized this a long time ago.....after all, u look at urself in the mirror 24/7!
Prem(sarcastically): very funny.....too bad u're the only one laughing, basanti....
Mukti: or am I? I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple of girls sniggering about the same thing behind ur back.....ya kya tum ne woh bhi nahin dekhaa???
Prem(in frustration): You.......just wait till I get better basanti....then it's going to be my hands and ur throat.....
Mukti(sarcastically while getting up): Oooooooh......I'm really, really scared now.....
"Duffer" she added and grinned while going to get something else.
Mukti(coming back): Here. I got u some mint to get over the grotesque taste....
She reached out with her hand, and he opened his mouth slightly and awkwardly........she could feel the warmth of his lips on her fingers and the slight tickle of heat on them as she placed the mint into his mouth......his lips closed in on her fingers for a second as she withdrew them.....it almost felt as though he had done this deliberately......
And, indeed, he had.........for in that second, she also felt a piercing pain on her index finger as his teeth sunk into them.....
Mukti(clasping her finger): Owww....Owwww! U bit my finger, u idiot!
Prem(smirking in his usual way): awww....did that hurt, basanti? Now THAT was for all that crap u were saying about me a while before.....don't worry, there's more to come after I get better.....this will do for now.
She threw a pillow at him fiercely.......and missed.
She got even madder at that, and shoved another one at his face.....it got him this time....and he gasped in surprise and pain.....
Prem: HEY! That's not fair!can't u see i'm not well?!
Mukti: O Yes it is, u're still a jerk!
Prem: just wait till I......
He wasn't able to finish his sentence, for then, all of a sudden, there was a loud explosion outside and the lights went out...........
Prem: what the heck was that?
Mukti staggered in the dark, found her way to the window, and looked outside in confusion......the power line outside was in a blaze, and some workers were trying to fix it.....
Mukti(in a worried tone): there's a storm outside, prem, and apparently, the power line got disturbed...
Rain was beginning to beat hard against the window at that time.....Prem saw her rush to the it and close it tight to keep out the water......Mukti looked out and saw trees and bushes swaying dangerously in the powerful wind, pools of water forming on the roads and ground outside, and the grey, mighty clouds covering what had been a clear, sparkling sky.....She saw a penetrating bolt of lightening in the sky, followed by a sudden, loud, roar of thunder.....Prem could see her crouch in sudden fright and move back a step or two.......but she didn't move away from the window.....
Mukti( forcefully): I'll bring a few candles in here, I guess......it doesn't look like a friendly sight outside......the workers are going to have to leave the place soon because the storm is getting worse every second.......that means that powers probably going to be out for the night.....
Saying this, she went out of the room. He started to worry since she was taking a long time to return.....
Prem(partly climbing out of the bed): Mukti!
He didn't hear any sound except for the brewing storm outside......he clambered his way to the door, and yelled her name again....
This time, he heard her coming up the stairs, carrying two candles....
Mukti: coming! I had a hard time finding these in the......
She stopped, and stared up at prem, standing near the door......
Mukti(hurrying up): Prem, for goodness's sake! What are u doing out of bed again? One more step and u would have been falling down the stairs!
Get back! she yelled again.
Holding the two candles in one hand now, she took him by the arm in exasperation and made him lie in bed....... "don't try that ever again, duffer!"
He didn't say anything while she escorted him back.....he was looking at her strangely, while she placed the two candles in the room. She sat down on a chair and faced him.....she saw him looking at her intently and moved her eyes in some other direction......
Prem(finally): u're really afraid of the dark, aren't u basanti?
Mukti(turned her eyes towards him sharply): what! Me?....afraid of the dark?.....a-absolutely not! W-where did u get that idea from?
Prem(sighing in annoyance): C'mon basanti! U know u're a terrible liar so why do u keep on trying?! Everybody's afraid of something, for God's sake!it's nothing to be ashamed about!
Mukti(in irritation): but I told u, I'm not afraid of the dark!! Honestly!
Prem: its ok, mukti.....I know u are, so it doesn't matter if u keep on saying u're not for the rest of the night...
Mukti: fine! U can think whatever u want, duffer! But I'm not.!
She walked determinedly to the candles on the table and blew them off, one by one.....
"see?" she said boldly, "I'm not afraid of the dark.....u can make me sit here all night in the dark and I won't care"
she realized what she had done and said, as soon as she said those words out loud.....it was absolutely dark in the room now except for the moonlight that swept across the room occasionally through the window.....how could she have been so stupid, she thought. There was no way she was going downstairs alone again to fetch the match.....
Mukti(awkwardly): uuhhhh.....
Prem(smiling in the dark): to miss basanti! That was a clever move, there(he added sarcastically).....thanks to you, ab humain jo nazar aa bhi raha tha wo bhi nahi aai ga!
Mukti: what do we do now? I'm not going down again in the dark if that's what u want me to do!
Prem: Aha! so you ARE afraid of the dark then?
Mukti(checking herself): I didn't say THAT! All I said was that I'm not going to bother going down again, ok?
Prem: thats fine with me, as long as u prove to me that u really are not afraid of the dark! Since u blew off those candles, you're going to have to sit in this room all night! Afterall, u said that urself didn't u??? "u can make me sit here all night and I won't care!".......so what abt it, basanti? Do u dare?
Mukti: you're pathetic, u know that?! But guess what.....I'm going to keep my word.....I'm going to sit here just for the sake of wiping that mocking smirk off ur face!
Prem: suits me, basanti.
Mutki(determinedly): fine then, I'm staying.
Prem: Fine!
Mukti: Fine!

She hadn't realized it, but he had been staring at her for hours now......it was past midnight and she was still awake......he could see her eyelids close in drowsiness a lot of times, but they snapped back open an instant later, and her eyes bolted this way and that.....watching and waiting in apprehension.......she was scared of falling asleep, no doubt, he thought.......she was sleepy and tired beyond description, but she was forcefully keeping her eyes open out of fear and uneasiness......
there was plenty of light in the room now, as he got accustomed to the darkness.....he could see her clearly and perfectly.....she was sitting upright in the chair in a state of alertness and readiness, but her face showed how tired she was getting, waiting for day and light to stream through the window......she gazed outside through the window now and then, her eyes following the trace of rain drops on the glass pane, her nose taking in the fresh scent of the storm, her ears marveling at the power of the tenacious and persisting thunder outside......he saw her get up from her seat, finally, and walk......apparently, she was trying to obliterate her drowsiness by taking a fresh round of the room.....he couldn't help but smile at her unwavering stubbornness and resolution to keep awake at all cost.......she must really, really want to prove me wrong, he thought to himself......
She was walking unsteadily now, apparently too overwhelmed by her tiredness. As she moved closer to the other side of his bed, her feet hit one the bed posts, and she tripped, falling right into his bed sheets......
He sat up in concern.....he had expected her to shout out in pain or discomfort, but she hadn't said anything at all when she fell.......she was lying right beside him now, and as he looked down at her in the moonlit room, he discovered that her eyes were closed.......apparently, she had fallen asleep the second she had hit the bed!......her exhaustion had won over her stubbornness as it was bound to from the very beginning......he smiled....
It was getting chilly inside the room now, and he covered her sleeping figure in his bed sheets.....
He reached closer and looked down at her features, which expressed nothing except peaceful bliss under the dancing moonlight.....as he gazed down at her intently, he remembered the incident when both of them had landed in a garage a few months back, when their car had broken down in the middle of the road.......he smiled as he recalled how drunk she had gotten and all the nonsense that she blabbered out during that time, eventually falling down into his arms in unconsciousness.......he remembered how closely he had looked into her half-open eyes and her smiling face.......how he had felt their compelling attraction even then.......
He cuddled up into her warmth and gently, kissed her forehead.......she moved a little under his touch, and unconsciously placed her arm on his chest........he moved his fingers softly over her bare neck and shoulders, and stroked her hair fondly in between them..........his face was barely inches away from hers, her every breath sweeping affectionately over his lips, and her fragrance overwhelming the entirety of his soul and body........she suddenly sighed, deep in the depths of a pleasant dream.... and in that moment, he almost lost all senses.....he desperately wanted to express his love and passion blatantly.....he used all the restrain that he could muster to keep his lips from crushing hers which were only a heartbeat away......his gaze burned into her features, as he looked at her longingly and lovingly.......he wrapped his arm around her in affection, the fingers of his left hand intertwined determinedly with hers on his chest...... it felt so right to have her so near him, to have her in his arms, sound asleep.....his last thought before he closed his eyes, and before he fell into the depths of his own dreams, was that she was his, and his only....he couldn't live with hiding his love from her any longer.......

The sunlight flowed abundantly into the room through the window and fell upon the two figures, wrapped closed together, and sleeping peacefully in each others arms.......
She was the first to wake, frowning under the strain of the strong light, her eyes still tightly closed.....she reached out and rubbed them... her hand fell back and rested against something warm and soft......confused, she opened her eyes, only to see her face inches away from his.....
