Long ago there lived in Ujjain a great king called Jai Walia. He was a brave soldier, a fair judge and an able administrator and his subjects lived happily and secure under his tutelage. He had four lovely queens who loved him dearly:
Pia: The most beautiful one.
Roshni: The cleverest one, a master at diplomacy and statecraft.
Sonali: The wisest and most talented one, a master of arts and sciences.
He loved all the three but the darling of his heart was his eldest wife and the patrani (Chief Queen) Banidevi. This preference often irritated the other queens and they would often berate him for his choice asking him why he preferred Bani so much, she was not as pretty as Pia, as learned as Sonali or as versed in statecraft as Roshni. JW would only reply that she is the one who is most devoted to me. To which they would protest that didn't they serve him as loyally and go to any extents to please him. 😳😳😳One day they decided to take matters in their hands they went up to JW and said "You either prove that she is the most faithful and devoted wife or strip her of her title"
JW was thoughtful, he consulted his Mahamantri (Chief Minister) Tarundas a wise old brahmin who had served him long. He whispered something into his ear. Next day, the king woke up with a terrible headache which threatened to split him apart. Alarmed the Vaidraj (Royal Physician) Nachiket was called for. He observed the King and said that the only way he could be cured was if any of the queens would stamp on his head repeatedly (as he had been so instructed by Tarundas).
Pia was applied for but she refused saying that it was a great sin for a woman to step on her husbands head and she would spend seven lives in hell for doing that. She refused as did Roshni and Sonali offering the same excuse. Now Bani was applied for and she readily offered to do the needful. Tarundas stopped her observing that she was about to embark on a great sin which cud cause her to rot in hell.
Bani merely observed "My lord is in pain and you are thinking about my hell and heaven, I don't care a damn if I can relieve my lord and master's pain" At this the King woke up and addressed his other wives "So do you see the difference between Bani and yourselves" The three junior queens were ashamed and apologised to both JW and Bani and promised to be dedicate themselves fully to pleasing the King and honouring the patrani and not play games.
Now that the King was free of settling the neverending sqaubbles between the queens, he devoted himself to furthering his kingdom's political aims and soon conquered the whole of Bharatvarsha. In the process he also acquired a fine harem of queens 😉for everytime he would conquer a kingdom, the vanquished king would offer him a princess as wife in return of allowing them to continue ruling over their kingdoms as his vassal. King Jai also fathered scores of children 😉and lived happily ever after with his devoted and lovely wives (and princes) but Banidevi continued to remain the apple of his eyes.😛
