Mrs. Seema SAhay laughed along with her hearing her story.
'Well how long are you going to hide the truth from him..' she asked.
'I have no idea…'
Seema looked at her for a moment and said 'Bani… are you sure what you are doing is right. You know about these high class people….'
'Don't worry.. Mrs Sahay.. I know where to draw the line.. and besides he looked very desperate…'
'But…' Seema sahay was apprehensive about her decision to help Dr. Walia….
'Make sure dear that you are not playing with fire…'
'Hmmm…'
On Monday morning Bani walked into the hospital thinking about the calamity she had caused in the restaurant.
She met him on the way to her office… he acknowledged her in anod and walked briskly to his consulting room.
Bani had a huge work load. She went to the canteen with Ms Braganza for a cup of coffee. Bani were back from her coffee break she saw Roshni walk briskly towards the elevator. She walked hurriedly holding Ms Braganza's hand to the elevator…
'What happened?' asked the woman..
'Ms Braganza I forgot an important file. I need to get that to doctor's office.'
'Relax….' The woman assured her. The elevator opened and she stepped hurriedly out walked to her office grabbed a file and walked to his office. She gave a soft knock on the door and opened the door. He was seated behind the desk and Roshni was standing near the window looking out side. She turned her head as she saw Bani.
Ignoring Roshni she walked towards his desk. 'Jai, don't forget the time….. It's at 7pm.'
He looked baffled.
Roshni cleared her throat..
'Bani turned her attention immediately to her. And said apologetically, ' I am sorry Ms. Chopra, I did not….' Bani stopped in mid sentence at the stony look Roshni threw her.
'Jai , I am leaving. Call me..' she said that and left the room.
Bani turned her attention towards him and asked, 'How was it?'
He looked lost.
'Dr. Walia, you asked me to do a job two days ago, I came to tell you that I have begun my job..' she left the room leaving him confused.
Jai walia received a call in the same evening from Roshni. It took him whole five minutes to realize what was actually going on.
He put the receiver on the cradle and sighed.
Bani were seated in his office the next day. She was taking down the notes she asked him suddenly. 'Well, Dr.Walia what's the result?'
'You have hit the bulls eye..' he replied shoving the papers away from his desk. 'By the ways let me know before hand what you are going to do next. You rather catch me off guard.'
'I told you sir I don't plan things beforehand, I am spontaneous..'
'good luck then.' He dismissed her reaching for the phone.
Jai was back from his work early in the evening. His younger sister Anupama walked in to his study.
'Bhai, you are early today..'
'hmm'.
'So tell me what you are going to do with Roshni madam?' she asked pulling a chair and sitting down.
'Anu, don't bother me….' He tried dismissing his sister. He knew she would leave the room only when she finishes what she came to tell him.
'Brother? Your bossing will only work with your staff not with me..' she warned.
That was once up on a time sis. You don't know…..
Where are you lost?' she demanded.
'My dear, just spit it out why you came here?' he asked not wanting to fight with her.
'Roshni madam called. She was complaining about you. She said. Jai ne kaise kaise employees ko rakka hein. Sab sarpar chad kar bol rahein hein..' she mimicked Roshni. Brother I want to know. sar par chadi ladki koun hein?'
"Anu, please go from here…'
'Brother I want to know about the employee, she is kind of interesting. Since Roshni doesn't like her I know I am going to love her…. Brother please…..' ANupama's eyes glinted.
Jai studied his younger sibling with affection.
'Brother, I am waiting..' she said tapping on his desk.
'Anu… promise me you will get out from here once I tell you about her….'
'It's a promise….' She pinched her throat.
'She is my new employee.. She is very… hmm… out spoken… rather blunt. Speaks her mind all the time. Roshni is little insecure when she is around…'
'And brother you are taking total advantage of it….' Anu grinned.
'I have no idea what you are talking about…'he said feigning innocence.
'You do brother….. You do.. And I am loving it..' she pushed the seat back came around him and hugged him tight.
'Hurray!' she screamed before shutting the door.
Bani's friends planned a grand New Year party she promised them she would help them in any way she can. In few days it will be 2007. She thought, walking down the road clutching Raghav's new trouser. She promised him she would get it for him after work from the tailor. She was late to get down from hospital and she had last minute work from Dr. Walia..
The climate was chilling. She pulled her coat over her tightly and walked briskly to the bus stop.
A car screeched to a halt near her. Bani jumped on to the pavement looking squarely at the man.
Jai walia rolled his window pane and looked at her.
'Ms. Dixit what are you doing here at this hour?'
'I… went to the tailor shop…' she said pulling the coat more closely to her slim body. She was literally shivering from cold.
'Get in MS. Dixit….' He opened the door for her.
'I'll take a bus..' she pointed towards the bus stand..
'Get in Ms dixit its very cold in there and you wont get any bus in another fifteen minutes.. by the time you will freeze to death…. Come in..'
She got in beside him and shut the door. She put the parcel down and rubbed her hands together. The interior of the car was warm.
'Were out of your mind.. Do you know the time?..'he couldn't hide his displeasure.
'I was running an errand for a friend….' She said defensively.
She noticed the car take a different route. 'Dr. Walia.. you need not have to take long route.'
'Well, my house is near by, why don't we have a cup of coffee…'he said throwing a glance at her.
Bani panicked suddenly. She went quiet for a moment.
'What? Why the dull face? …. Ms. Dixit, I promise no hanky panky just a cup of coffee… '
"okay." She believed him for no reason. He was a harmless man.
'Good.' The car took a turn and passed a huge gate.
She glanced at the house. It looked like mansion. And looked like a picture out a story book.
Walia mansion. she read the board. He is filthy rich she thought.
He parked the car in the porch and they got out.
A young woman opened the door precisely and gaped at her guest. Her face widened into a smile.
'BHai… this must be Bani Dixit….' She said walking down the stair and extending her hand towards Bani.
Bani shook her cold her with her and looked lost.
'Ms. Dixit ... This is my sister Anupama…' Jai introduced his sister to her.
'Call me Anu..' said the young lady.
'Were you going some where?' he asked frowning.
'Nope just near the garden. I was bored inside…. come in Bani…. Oops.. may I call you Bani…' she asked eagerly.
'Yes, why not… I am actually fed up of this Ms. Dixit thing….' Bani said smiling at her.
Anu giggled and led her in to the house.
Bani liked her instantly.
Bani looked around her. The room Anu took Bani was in finest dcor. Doctor left them excusing him. Anu studied Bani for a moment and then said, I am glad you came here.'
Bani wondered. They had never met. And Dr. Walia never mentioned his sister to her. Then how come…… Bani's thoughts were interrupted by the entry of Mrs. Walia into the living room with Jai. Bani got up from the settee. She looked at the woman. The woman had an aura around her. She was in her early sixties. There was some familiarity about her. The older woman shook her hand introducing her as Jai's mother. Jai introduced Bani to his mother. Bani smiled at the woman. Bani looked at her closely. She couldn't come with any conclusion. She had met her before but where? She listened intently to the woman. She had heard this voice.. but where? Bani raked her brain.
'Yes! Mother Philomena….' Bani exclaimed unaware of the attention she caused.
'Mother Philomena?' repeated Mrs. Walia.
Jai looked from his mother to Bani. He was puzzled at the sight he had witnessed few weeks ago in his office.
Bani smiled at the woman. "yes ma'am , I was wondering where I had seen you..'
'And you think I look like mother Philomena….' She asked hiding her smile.
Bani nodded.
'How do you know her?' asked Mrs. Walia..
'I grew up in ST. Bishops' she said looking at the older woman.
Jai exchanged glances with his sister.
Mrs. Walia was taken back at her revelation. She studied the young woman sitting before her. She was bold and pretty. For a second she thought she saw pain flash through her saucer eyes. She loved her hair. Mrs. Walia noticed she had an extra ordinary curly hair. The woman reached for her hand and held extremely cold hand in her's. 'My dear… mother Philomena is my sister….'
That was news to Bani. Bani looked at the woman wide eyed. She looked disbelievingly at Jai and her breath caught in her chest. 'Uh… Ho'. What has she done? she had lied him to get the job and now what? She thought nervously.
Tony served coffee meanwhile. Bani sipped her coffee quietly. She sneaked a glance at him. His face was expression less. She could not read anything from it. She finished her coffee and got up.
'It was nice meeting you Mrs. Walia and.' she turned to Anu. 'Nice meeting you too. It's very late and I have to get going.'
Bani bid her farewell to the family.
The drive back to her house was in silence. Bani did not have any other story to feed him. Some where in her heart she was relieved. The truth has finally come out. The car stopped near her building and she got out. Before shutting the door she said, ' I am sorry about the lie I told you about an ailing mother. ..'
He spoke after a minute. Not taking his eyes of her.
'What is the truth Ms. Dixit? Lie about your ailing mother or about Mother Philomena?' where you are concerned one never knows…' he knew in his heart of heart the truth. He had more or less witnessed her interaction with the mother.
'The truth is I have no mother or any one in this world and I am better off with out them…' she said bitterly. I know the mistake I made and I do remember what you said…. You don't like people who lie and you absolutely have no reasons to keep me as your employee.. I do understand.' She stopped and looked eagerly at him. He looked impassive.
'But …. Dr. Walia.. you will have to think about Roshniji….' She concluded hiding her smile. He did not know what was coming.
'You… You witch…. You are absolutely a witch… he muttered. He couldn't believe she was actually trapping him.
'Drive safely doctor..' she shut the door.
'Like hell I'll. He muttered.
