k,
I see a lot of anger in your post.
I don't know quite what the source of your anguish is but here's my opinion for all its worth:
i would hesitate to make both the assumptions that you have made:
1. in the west ppl are not emulating/ putting into practise what they see on t.v.
2. in india ppl do emulate/practise what they see on t.v.
ultimately the producers and scritwriters produce only that which sells. shows do close down because of falling trp. ergo, ppl chose what they watch. case in point are the falling trp's of ks post ONS to the point where they had to pacify the audience by telling them that JW was drugged.
it's a different matter that quite often they willfully misunderstand what the audience is saying: but ultimately they have to give in. Mihir had to be shown alive. J&B will have to brought back together etc.
on a differnt note, i think that somewhere, in a certain sense, t.v. are a refracted reflection of the state of the society/culture they are produced in. so, i would not heap the blame on t.v.shows. that would be mistaking the symptom for the disease.
lastly, sabhyata and parampara are not the domain of t.v. if you are depending upon t.v. shows to pass cultural values on to your children, let me assure you that the battle is already lost. Culture and values are and ought to be transmitted from other more legitimate sources such as parents. and allowing children unrestricted access to t.v. shows meant clearly for adults is in anycase wrong. last, but not least, one could successfully argue the converse quite successfully: that through these shows many an important points are hammered home. that to be as selfish as pia is despicable. to be as honest as bani is admirable. that greed is a cardinal sin that can make a sister like Jigyasa turn into someone awful.
t.v is entertainment. it can sometimes strike a chord with the viewer: like the way JB captured our romantic imagination, but in the end it's only a fanatsy. nothing more and nothing less.
hope my reply made some sense without offending you.
