PART XIX

The next few days passed off in a hurry. The Dixits had gone to meet Jai's Maasi the next evening and the lady was so ecstatic that she bulldozed the Dixits into fixing the date for marriage after a month. The reason, Maasi explained, was that she couldn't wait to see Bani in Jai's life and in his home. Bani was already in his life, all that is left was for her to turn his house into a home. The Dixits were also happy for the children and they decided to speed up their activities. A month was hardly any time for parents to arrange for their daughter's marriage.

Mayank and his parents had not contacted them any more. Jai's punch probably did the trick, Bani thought wryly. Now that the dust has settled down, she suddenly found herself in the role of a betrothed and a lover too. This unexpected transition from a best friend to lover, and also a fianc, that too with such rapidity, astounded her sometimes and although Jai was his usual self around her, she felt a little shy around him, though she knew very well that it was just a fleeting feeling. The love, trust and understanding that Jai and she shared would never change, Bani knew that.

No, Bani thought, she was lying. The sudden change in their status has understandably affected Jai too and he treated her more amorously nowadays. It was nothing out of the way but it was too fast. But what the hell, she was enjoying it a lot. And she would be getting married to Jai after a month – this thought made her happy and terrified at the same time. Whatever the reason, she didn't want her friendship with Jai to end.

Jai had gone to LA for around two weeks to ink a deal and he was expected back very soon. Bani missed him sorely. However, Mary and Rano kept her occupied during these days, readying for her marriage and the other rituals, shopping for clothes, jewellery and other accessories. In midst of this entire hullabaloo, Bani still attended Office.

Jai called her regularly to brief her about the project proposal and its status. Bani told her how Maasi de-briefed her everyday about the groom's shopping status too and they shared a good laugh over it.

Jai asked suddenly 'Is anybody missing me over there?'

Bani caught the hint and kept quiet. Then after a few seconds, she replied
'Yes, we are all missing you. When will you come back?'

A slow smile spreading all across his words, Jai prodded her further
'I am not asking about ALL. I am being specific about a certain person, to be more specific, I am asking about my fianc. How's she doing? Tell her I have done some shopping for her too.'

Bani was now curious, Jai and shopping, the last combination in the entire world

'Well Mr. Walia, your fianc's saying that she misses you a lot. And that she's waiting impatiently for you to come back. At the same time, your fianc is absolutely intrigued about the shopping bit. What exactly are you shopping over there?'

Jai replied playfully 'So she's missing me a lot? How does she define lot? Could you please ask her?

Bani was now enjoying this charade too much

'Well Ms Dixit told me that she's missing you so much that she keeps on thinking about you constantly, during all her waking moments, so that your physical absence doesn't make her feel bereft.'

'Interesting, very interesting', Jai said 'Oh so she's missing me physically?'

Bani stumbled a bit 'Nope not only physically but also emotionally too and …'

Jai's drawl stopped her from continuing any further
'So how about I get extra kisses for this absence when I return back? You tell her not the friendly platonic ones on the cheek, I mean the ones using other skills.'

Bani blushed a beetroot red and thanked her stars that there was no one else in her bed room, she was at a loss of words as how to reply to Jai when Jai continued

'I know you are blushing now sweetheart. I so wish I could see it, but yes I will in less than a month's time. Could I get a kiss now?'

At last finding her voice, Bani said in a mockingly chiding voice
'Jai behave yourself, will you? When are you coming back?'

'Arre yaar', Jai said 'I will have to stay for another 4 days over here. But what's with the kiss? And I am not over there too that you will find it difficult to stop once you start? Bani, this kiss is my birthright' he said seriously.

Clutching the receiver in both her hands, Bani whispered softly
'Ok Jai, this is for you' and lowered her mouth very near to the mouthpiece.

Across the seas, Jai's smile widened as he heard the kiss from his sweetheart traveling through airwaves to him and felt it firmly implanted on his soul. In response, he pressed his lips on the mouthpiece of his cell phone and kissed back.

'Wait Bani' he thought 'I am coming back soon. I just can't wait to be with you.'

Jai's return after a few days, after having finalised the deal, set the mood in both the camps which were now both groaning heavily under the burden of marriage-work, for which the time available was very short. Jai had met Bani only once after his return and had managed to remind her about the kiss, when Rakesh Uncle had appeared from somewhere and had taken Bani away by saying that her Mother was looking for her. Jai was left like a sitting duck on the balcony and Bani's giggling face made him swear that he would extract the payment along with the interest later on after their marriage.

Both the families decides to forfeit the engagement party since it didn't make much sense now, what with Bani already wearing Jai's engagement ring. With only about 11 days left for the wedding, Jai was also hard pressed for time, since he had to escort Maasi to a number of places to complete the shopping. And Jai Walia hated shopping, what a coincidence he thought, that Bani was also not a compulsive shopper.

'Jai Jai' Maasi yelled from the hall 'Where are you? Do hurry up, we have to to to the Dixits now.'

Jai poked his head out from the room and yelled back 'But why do I have to go? I mean what will I do?'

Masi replied back 'Nothing, just enjoy. Since everything has been arranged within a short span of time, we couldn't get hold of most of our relatives and friends and the same holds for the Dixits too. So we have to make do with some friends from both sides in this. I don't think there is any problem if you come along. Anyway a few of your friends have already arrived and are waiting for you in the garden, so better hurry up.'

As she walked back towards the door, Masi suddenly turned around and said a sulking Jai
'And also Jai, I think this is where you see Bani as Dixit probably for the last time. Next time you see her she will be on the threshold of becoming Mrs. Walia.'

Well, it didn't take Jai 10 minutes also to get ready after this, Maasi noted with satisfaction. Jai's friends teased him mercilessly over this.

There were not many people in the Dixit Residence either. A few of Bani's and Rano's friends and some common family friends mostly made up for the guests. Mr. and Mrs. Dixit explained that since everything happened all of a sudden, their relatives could not make it to the sangeet, but they would all be arriving for the wedding. At least most of them.

Jai noticed his friends having a great time with Rano and her friends who were also giving it back to them in their own style. But where was Bani? He thought.

After the initial introduction, he slowly weaved his way through the existent maze of people and headed towards Bani's room. Nobody seemed to have noticed him going up. He slightly knocked on the door and waited for a minute or so. Receiving no answer, he slowly pushed the door open and looked inside. The room was quiet, there was no sign of its occupant, but was liberally strewn with dresses, sarees and materials of varying colours. He entered the room and shut the door firmly behind him. Two dim lights illuminated the room and the light at the dressing table top was on. Jai walked into the room and noticed that some jewellery boxes were lying casually on the bed. He opened a box to see a gold necklace inside it. What a careless girl! He thought, leaving all these on her bed and then evaporating. But where was she?

Turning around, he walked towards the door when his knee banged against a side table and a flower vase crashed to the ground. The crash was followed by a deafening silence.

He bent down to pick up the metal vase when a melodious voice floated out from the washroom
'Rano what are you doing here? I told you not to disturb me. What did you drop this time?? The metal vase I presume?'

A slight 'Hmmm' was the only answer she received.

Bani again said 'Why cant you speak properly? I know, your mouth is stuffed with chocolate again, right? Wait till I tell Mamma. How many times do we have to tell you not to eat chocolates whenever you feel like? And u don't listen either?'

'Ok, now that you are here, do hand me the robe that I have left back on the bed, the black silk one. And be fast. The guests have all arrived. I really hope Jai comes along with, I know he doesn't like coming to parties, but this is our sangeet.

Now what happened? You have become a stone sweetie? Pass on the robe to me. God what will I do now? Along with you, now I will also have to teach Jai so many things, like to be more sociable and stuff'.

Jai, hardly able to suppress his laughter, picked up the robe from the bed and walked towards the washroom and knocked on the door. A few seconds later, Bani's hand shot out and Jai placed the robe on her hand, taking great pain to ensure that he didn't touch him. A wet Bani was too much of a provocation, he thought.

As the door closed with a click, Jai walked back towards the dresser and taking a small red package out of his kurta pocket, kept it at the centre. He then opened the balcony door and stepped out into the cool February air.

The bathroom door opened a few minutes later and Bani entered the room, shivering a little

'Who the hell opened the balcony door?' she thought.

As she walked towards the balcony, she suddenly noticed the red box lying on top of the dresser

'Now what is this? Where did it come from?' she said inwardly. She moved to the dresser and picked up the box. She wanted to close the balcony door first, she was getting goose bumps all over, but she was really intrigued by that box.

From the balcony, Jai noticed her picking the box up and fidgeting with the ribbon and gift paper, trying to open it. She jumped out of her skin when two strong hands covered her hands from behind and warm fingers plied with her own to open the gift wrapping.

Bani's heart was already racing like Schumi's Ferrari yet she kept her hold on the box with lifeless fingers. On top of that, Jai was breathing directly on her skin, past her left collar bone and she could feel a faint blush racing through all her veins. And she suddenly felt exposed, what with only a silk robe on. Jai noticed the colour reaching her cheeks and smiled against her hair.

'Oh my God' he thought 'she smells heavenly. What shampoo did she use?'

The gift paper finally lay mutilated and torn on the ground and Jai removed his hand from Bani's hand, which still held the box, and urged her to open it. Bani opened the box slowly and gasped in astonishment as a jade vermilion container emerged from inside the box. It was exquisitely crafted and designed and Bani held the container lovingly in her hand.

She whispered 'Thank you Jai, its exquisite. Thanks a lot'.

She soon registered that her words were becoming a blur as Jai's hands encircled her waist and pulled her closer to him, heat radiating from his body making it difficult for her to concentrate. In fact, her breath stopped when Jai moved his head and rested his jaw on her clavicle. All sorts of coherence were rapidly leaving her, Bani noted; maybe it was not a good thing now.

Jai whispered back 'You are welcome, my beloved. But do enlighten me about what lessons are you going to impart to me after our marriage? You see I am a very good student and I assure you that my teacher will get 100 percent cooperation from me in this regard. The only thing I want to know is the subject, so could you please elaborate on that Ma'am?'

Bani realized that it was Jai who was in her room all this while and that he had heard every word that she had meant for Rano to hear. Though she was enjoying the flirting a lot, yet her sixth sense warned her that now was not the time to indulge in this banter.

She forcibly extracted herself from Jai's arms and turned around with a serious expression

'Jai, I think we have to go downstairs now. People will be missing us, especially you, since you have come with your friends. We really don't have time for all these.'

Looking intently at her lips, Jai sighed heavily and sulked 'Ok though I really don't want to go in there. But hey, what about the kiss you promised? Maybe a small sample?'

Bani stared at him incredulously and after a few seconds broke into a grin. She shook her head at Jai and pointed to the door.

An errant lock of hair fell in front of Bani's face. Jai reached over and pushed it back behind her ear. She smiled sweetly at the gesture. These were the little things so preciously cherished between them. The little things only two people in love could fully appreciate.

Jai pulled her close to him again and kissed her cheek lightly. Bani, slightly emboldened, turned her face and brushed his lips with her own. A gasp escaped Jai and before he could say anything, Bani's lips returned to his own and she sucked on the sweet softness of his bottom lip. Jai tried to answer back but by then Bani had already moved back. She pointed towards the door once again and Jai noticed that she was breathing heavily. He was so sure that his own heartbeats could be heard by everybody in a 1000-km radius.

He smiled at her lovingly and then turned around abruptly and walked out of the door.
'Whew! Close shave' Bani thought as she sank like a limp rag doll on her bed.
