Part XVII

It was around 10 p.m. when Bani entered the Dixit Residence, after having spending a restless evening which climaxed in her breaking off from Mayank and finally taking those wobbly, nevertheless important steps towards the man who was her life. She wondered how strange life was, it was only when we were on the brink of losing someone or something, only then do we realize the importance of that person or thing in our lives. She opened the front door cautiously hoping that her Father doesn't stay awake during these late hours, at least today. Today, she was in no mood to answer anyone though she was mentally doing the moonwalk.

She slipped open her slippers and shoved them under the nearest settee and proceeded noiselessly towards the stairs. Thank God, Bani told herself, it seems everyone has retired to their rooms. She mad sms-ed her Mom some time earlier that she had some urgent work and would be late to return. And she had specifically asked her to keep this away from Papa. She would explain everything tomorrow morning.

Suddenly the hall erupted in lights and Bani turned around, still clutching her office file, to face the angry face of her Father.

Angry is to tame a word, Bani thought, he's livid with rage.

She espied her Mom standing next to her Father, wearing a benign smile, and Rano, near the dining table with a perplexed expression on her face. Ok, its time to face the cannon, Bani thought.

Rakesh Dixit stepped in front and his voice rang through the hall

'So where were you all this time? Is this any time for any girl to return home, especially if she happens to be engaged? Answer me, I don't want those puppy dog expressions.'

Keeping the file down on the table, Bani stuck up her chin and said

'I was at Jai's place with Jai. I had something important to discuss with him.'

'Important indeed, I am sure' RD growled 'Do you have any idea about the time? Forget time, do you have any idea what people will say when they find out that a betrothed girl who will be married within a few weeks time, is spending so much of her time with her boyfriend, err, friend, I think'.

Bani glanced towards her Mother who quickly came up to her daughter's rescue
'Rakesh you know very well how close Jai and Bani are and that Jai always helps Bani out when she is in difficulties …'

Rakesh turned towards her impatiently and with a flick of his hand, stopped her

'Aruna, please stop it. Its not a question of helping, for that I will remain eternally grateful to that Walia boy, but its question of prestige, position and status in society and most of all my daughter's respect and self-esteem. I wouldn't allow anyone to play with that, even Bani. And what's with the ring?' he asked rudely picking up Bani's hand.

'I don't remember seeing it earlier. Has Mayank given you a new ring?' he asked.

Mayank's name shook Bani to the core and she relaised that in spite of her reluctance to part with the truth tonight, she would have to do it now. Otherwise, both Jai and she would be in trouble. All the fuzzy feeling that she was cocooned in as Jai's arms embraced her a short while ago, was replaced with a cold, chilly sensation which left her bereft and frosty to the core.

'Well' Bani started clearing her throat 'I have something very important to tewll you all. Yes, this ring is new but it's not Mayank's and …'

The sound of a deafening slap roared across the room as Bani stood bewildered with her hand on her cheek and Rakesh Dixit trying his damnedest best to control himself from meting out the next slap.

He strode towards his wife and pointed out towards Bani

'Aruna, whatever Mayank told was absolutely right. I didn't believe him cos I had faith on my daughter, I guess too much faith. And look at what she has done? What will I tell Mayank's parents now? Will I be able to face the society anymore?'

A distressed Arundhati tried to console her husband 'Rakes,h, its okay. We don't know everything as yet, please calm down. Yes, you are right, the society will not be very kind probably. But here we are forgetting the most important thing dear, and that is the welfare of our daughter. Surely, she does have a right to select her own path ..'

RD retorted back 'When did I question that right? In fact, I have given complete freedom to our children and look where we have landed to today. Bani has every right to choose her own life and path but she could have told us about it beforehand. We would not have promised Mayank then the hands of our daughter.'

Bani stepped forward, her cheek still stinging from the slap,
'I am sorry Papa, but I myself did not know that I was in love with …'

'Jai', her Father completed her sentence 'I should have known. His Father had nearly brought about my downfall many years earlier and now the son has managed to destroy my position in the society altogether.'

In a firm voice, Bani answered back 'Papa, whatever you want to tell me, you are free to do so. But I won't hear anything against Jai. He has been so good to all of us and has already repented enough for his Father's mistakes and attitude, so I would appreciate if old issues are not dragged out from under the carpet.'

RD's voice escalated again 'So my daughter will now teach me what to consider and what not to consider, eh? I don't care what you feel but I am not happy at all with this situation. And if he was also serious about you, then why didn't he tell us? Or tell you in fact?'

Bani answered 'He did want to speak to me and then you but at that moment, the proposal from Mayank's family had already come and he didn't want to upset the apple cart. In fact, he has fulfilled his role in this charade as a good friend but finally the stakes went up so much higher, that it became difficult for both of us.'

Taking a deep breath, she continued 'In fact, it was me who broke off my engagement with Mayank even before speaking with Jai on this issue. I just couldn't bear the idea of being somebody else's wife. I took the risk knowing too well that if Jai did not reciprocate, I would be doomed and would lose our friendship too.'

RD sat down on the sofa, clutching his hand 'Aruna what is your daughter saying? What will I do now? I don't have anything against Jai but this situation is definitely not to my liking.'

Arundhati Dixit sat down beside her husband and kept a soothing hand on his shoulder
'Rakesh, we don't have to say anything. Let the kids solve this issue themselves. Somehow, I have always known that Jai and Bani were destined to be together and it surprised me when Bani accepted Mayank's proposal and Jai became such a good friend to him.'

A surprised RD looked up at her, his wife continued
'Don't you think its better that our daughter has realized this ONE Truth about her relationship and life before she got married? What would have happened had she come to realize this truth after her marriage? Would you be happy to see her bound in a marriage of convenience and searching for her soul mate continuously all through her life? Only difference, she would already know who her soul mate is but would not be able to anything about it. I am sure that Jai also loves Bani madly and hence had graciously stood aside when the engagement and other rituals were held. He simply didn't want to hurt her in any way whatsoever. Didn't you see for yourself the way he reacted when Bani fell down from the terrace stairs?'

'Rakesh we will have to help these two and yes, we have to manage Mayank's parents too' Arundhati said with an air of finality.

'But Aruna', RD quipped 'We had an arranged marriage and we never felt the need to love somebody else'.

Bani watched her Mother's face break into a heavenly smile 'I know Rakesh. I should just say that we were lucky. And that is all I am asking of you, let Bani free, don't tie her back with your anger and hatred dear. I have full faith on my kids, Jai included, and I know they had taken this step only when it had been difficult for either of them to let go off the love they have for each other, coupled with the longing and desire to be together for their lives.

We don't know about the future Rakes, but we can help them with their present.'

Seeing her Father soften down, Bani slowly picked up her file and walked towards her room, Rano followed her.

Rakesh Dixit glanced up to see his children climb the stairs in silence
'Aruna, she hasn't eaten anything I guess. Please could you give ..' his voice choked with emotions.

'Of course dear', AD replied 'you speak to her tomorrow morning. And no, she wont misunderstand you, she loves you a lot', saying this Arundhati got up from her seat on the sofa and walked towards the kitchen to rustle up something light for her darling daughter. Yes, she was very happy today.
……….

Next morning…

Bani woke up to the sounds of a growling stomach. Her hand automatically went to her cheek as she remembered everything that happened the last night. She then glanced at the simple gold band on her finger and smiled at it.

She glanced up worriedly as the door opened and her Father entered with a tea tray. Balancing the tray expertly on one hand, he firmly shut the door and approached her daughter, who was now eyeing him with a confused mix of emotions.

'Good Morning Dear', he wished cheerfully 'I thought of getting some morning tea for my Princess. I can hear her stomach growling actually. What say?'

Bani looked down at the tray with feigned interest. It was more of a breakfast tray, she thought – it contained a small pot of black tea, her favourite, sandwiches and her fave cookies as well. She looked up at the man sitting in front of her and her eyes filled with tears.

'I am sorry Papa' she muttered.

RD wiped his daughter's tears away 'No dear, I should be the one to tell you sorry. I over reacted. I didn't know what to say and do, Mayank's call had actually taken me by surprise and … Anyway, I am sorry for being spiteful towards Jai too. Please forgive me dear.'

Bani placed her hand on top of her Father's and said 'No no Father, its okay. You are elder to us, maybe I should have discussed the issue with you earlier.'

RD clasped her hand and then said
'Oh this is Jai's ring, pretty yet simple but elegant. Tell him I like it. And do tell him we will be going over to his place tonight for a talk with Maasi. Your Mother and Me only' His eyes twinkled.

He continued 'Now I want my angel to finish off the food. I will push off now. Rano is dancing outside to come and bulldoze you for details'.

Bani smiled at her Father and quickly escaped to the washroom. Before long, she could hear Rano singing

Uljhi hain yeh kis jal mein tu
Hai aajkal kis haal mein tu …

Bani shook her head good naturedly and thought 'Some things never change'.
…………………..

Walia Mansion

Same morning

'Engaged to Bani', Maasi exclaimed 'When? Where? How? Why?' her eyes bulging with excitement.

Gulping down his breakfast Jai replied warmly 'Calm down Maasi. As for the answers to your barrage of questions – We got engaged yesterday in this very house when she came to meet me last night. Simply because we are in love with each other and it would be a folly to make poor Mayank pay for our inability to communicate.'

Masi kept down the half eaten piece of toast and said, her eyes twinkling

'Wow, this is good news. I am so happy. Finally, my Munna will settle down in life. I should have guessed by now what's keeping you at bay. Of course Bani, it had to be Bani.'

Shooting a prayer to the deities residing in the heaven, she added 'Thank you God. Finally this House will also usher in a bride and soon after the pitter patter of tiny feet will adorn all corners of this house. Thank you God for fulfilling my wishes.'

An amused Jai kept looking at Maasi as his mind wandered to his fianc. 'Fianc?' he thought, 'Wow it sounds great'.

Hey Sangita...

That was so sweet... Rakesh coming with tea for bani after scolding her the previous night reminded me of my dad getting me my fav goodies after a harsh word to appease me...
;-D

so sweet...

and yes... the decision that they have taken is so so correct... but I wonder how many people would've reacted the same way that they did... I know of at least two who decided to stick with their parent's choice, after they realised that they loved someoneelse... after their engagements at that!
tough choice to make isn't it???

awesome upadate as usual!!!!
BRAVO... btw how come you're not to be seen on SS???
