Part XVI

11 February 2007

The Dixit Residence was dressed up like a full-blown bride, and why not, Jai thought. After all, it was the marriage ceremony of their eldest daughter and they were all destined to be happy. It seemed that the house was bursting to its seams with guests and friends and acquaintances pouring in from every mm of the house. just like any other normal marriage house, it was bursting with activities and the arrival of the groom roused a mini stampede, especially by the young girls in the house, who had all come to celebrate their Bani Didi's marriage.

Bani's Mom and Dad welcomed the groom and the baraati into the house. Her relatives flitted around the guests trying to make them and the other guests as comfortable as possible.

Jai knew that Bani was getting ready in her room attended by Rano and a few others. He had managed to catch a glimpse of Rano, who was looking beautiful in a deep blue lehenga-choli and silver accessories, the two of them had shared a special smile above the din of the other activities consuming a marriage house.

The Panditji was already seated at the mandap and making the necessary arrangements. He started the rituals and after some time, asked for the bride to be brought down from her room. The groom was already seated at his place, looking extremely handsome in his white sherwani and wearing the head gear, covering his face.

A few minutes later, Rano and two of her cousins escorted Bani down the staircase. Much as he tried, the groom's eyes flitted for a second to the appearance of his would-be bride and couldn't help but note how beautiful she was looking in her bridal red attire and gold jewelleries, her face covered partially with a gold bordered red-coloured veil. He quickly looked away and stared at the holy fire now burning brightly and durably in front of him. He prayed to God that their union stays strong and committed for years to come.

Once Bani was seated at her place beside the groom, she felt extremely nervous and her hands started sweating profusely. Although she knew the man, yet from now hence, their destinies would be entwined into one and a new life would start, and the roles that they were playing for so long would be redundant. A new relationship was going to take birth at that very instant.

The ceremony proceeded as per the Panditji's guidance and soon garlands were exchanged, pheras taken around the fire and finally the filling of the bride's parting with vermilion. After that the groom tied the mangal sutra around the bride's neck.

After the rituals were over, Bani's parents guided the newly wedded couple to the reception area where people arrived in hordes to congratulate the two. Though they were feeling very sad that their daughter was finally married and would leave for her in-laws place soon, yet the very thought that their daugheter was embarking into a new relationship which would define her life, served them enjoyment. Seating the bride and groom into comfortable chairs, the Dixits retreated letting the guests and friends take over.

Bani's friend Mary had arrived with a huge bouquet of flowers which she handed over to the couple jointly. After a while, she realized that she had forgotten to congratulate them, embracing Bani and shaking her friend's husband's hand, she said

'Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Walia. May all your dreams come true and mine's too of becoming the Godmother of your first-born very soon.'

Blushing a beetroot red, Bani looked towards Jai who was now all smiles. Finally, the ship has found its mooring.

A month earlier

The soft touch of a hand made Jai jump out of his reverie and he turned sharply, to see Bani standing in front of the bench.

'Bani, whats up?' he asked 'Anything serious? I mean its pretty late and you should have reached home by now.'

He stood up, holding Bani's hand in his own, and looked intently at Bani's tear-stained face. He sensed that Bani was shivering slightly so he escorted her back to his bedroom and sat her down on the comfy couch, plying her with a number of cushions. He pulled a cane chair in front of her and sat down himself, taking hold of her hands once again. All this while, Bani had been steadily following him with her eyes, across the room. She was feeling a little strange but not confused, the decision has been taken by her, now what remained to be seen was Jai's reaction.

Jai asked her seriously 'Whats the matter Bani? Please tell me, I will definitely try to help.'

Bani managed a small smile and she clasped Jai's warm hands in turn 'Thanks Jai for being there for me ALWAYS.'

She looked down at their clasped fingers and after a few patient moments, whispered 'Jai, I am not marrying Mayank. I have broken off with him.'

She looked up to see a surprised expression glance across Jai's face, then something akin to happiness, then consternation and finally shock as the implication of the statement hit him.

He muttered clumsily 'But why Bani? After so many days? What did Mayank say? Ok I know I am asking way too many questions. You please take your tiem and answer.'

Bani replied fervently 'Don't you understand Jai. I was going to commit the gravest mistake of my life and thus would be destroying three lives. Today Mayank will be sad and hurt, but its for the better. He would not have to be tied to a marriage where all duties would be fulfilled, but where love would always take a backseat. Call me selfish if you may Jai, but I couldn't do this Jai. I so needed the outer.'

She stopped to take a deep breath before she continued, as a surprised Jai looked on, his mind just registering the implication – 'Bani loves somebody else. Now who's this person? Bani hasn't ever spoken about this person.'

Bani looked into jai's eyes and said

'I know its wrong Jai, the way I behaved with Mayank today but I couldn't take it anymore. I had to do it. It's better to separate rather than carry on a relation forcibly which doesn't have a future and which would prove to be a burden in the long run.'

Noticing that Bani has started hiccupping softly, Jai got up slowly, his mind in deep thought, and went to get some water for Bani. When he returned he found Bani wiping off the tears that were spilling down his cheeks.

Handing over the glass to her, Jai sat down and told her tenderly
'Its ok Bani, you have taken the decision and that's it. Its better in a way. I agree that although Mayank will be hurt today, yet his future is saved. But what happened Bani?'

Finishing the drink of water, Bani quickly told Jai about what happened at the restaurant and after finding Mayank celebrating the good news with some of his ex-friends. And how she had thinking about this false relationship for quite some time now and that she made the decision that very instant at the restaurant.

Bani had left the table and kept her engagement ring behind on Mayank's empty side dish. And how she felt liberated at that moment.

She had taken a cab and set out for Jai's home. En route she had received a call from Mayank

'So its all over Bani? Aint it? It's Jai no???' he had asked with a silent voice.

Bani held back her tears and replied in the affirmative and how she wanted all of them to be happy and not tied to relationships which wouldn't hold itself through life's trials and tribulations. Luckily Mayank had understood and then congratulated Bani and Jai for a happily married life.

Jai said thoughtfully 'Oh I understand now. But who's this other fellow, Bani?'

Throwing the cushions to the other side of the settee and swinging her legs down onto the floor, Bani sat upright and catching hold of Jai's robe pulled him closer.

Having secured his unflinching attention, she said slowly

'Its you Jai, it has always been you. Its as easy as that. I never thought about it earlier but during the least few days, it has been maddening. This sudden feeling of losing you after my marriage with Mayank; the pain of going away from you all, especially you, and your nudges and pushes finally allowed me to see reason.

I don't know what you are thinking Jai, but I am in love with you, always have been since we became great friends and …'

She was effectively stopped by Jai, who felt a surge of happiness, elation and longing course through his body, and the kiss caught her unawares. It was a sweet, innocent kiss which ended as soon as it had started and once Jai pulled back, they both felt the loss immediately.

Getting up from the chair and pushing it away, Jai went to his dresser and took out a small jewel box. He came back to where Bani was seated and took out a platinum ring out of the box. Kneeling down in front of her with the ring in his hand, she gazed into Bani's eyes and said

'Bani I know all this is very sudden. I have been caught unaware myself so I know how tumultuous you must be feeling right now. But I swear I have to do this now, this very instant. I guess there is no need to spell out my feelings for you Bani, I am sure.

Ms. Bani Dixit, will you do the honour of making an honest man out of me?'

Jai's eyes glistened with unshed tears, it was as if life was suddenly giving him back everything that it had been threatening to steal from him.

'Do you know Bani, I had bought this ring quite some time back, but I didnt have the courage to tell you. By the time, I gathered courage, Mayank was already in the picture and I tried hard not to destroy the equilibrium' Jai continued.

Tears of happiness rolled down Bani's cheeks as she extended her left hand and the ring, in a few moments, was safely cocooned on her ring finger. She brought her hand up very near her face and after a while, she lowered it. Holding Jai's face with both her hands, she bent down and silently captured his lips, holding promise of tomorrow. Jai's hands circled around her waist and pulled her down to the ground on which he was still kneeling.
