PART XII

The pen clattered with a deafening sound from Bani's lifeless fingers which suddenly seemed devoid of any supply of blood. She stared at the door which had just now shut firmly behind Jai who after delivering his final dialogue had left without even a casual glance. The vastness of her office room seemed to close down on her senses with only one thought running through her mind – Jai loves me.

Jai loves me. Jai loves me !!!! Jai loves me ????????

'But this cant be true', Bani thought 'He must have implied something else. I am getting the wrong signals.'

She shook her head slowly and rubbed her eyes in disbelief, as if her senses and their reactions had switched places.

'What he said implied that. But why now? Oh God, what's happening?' Bani got up from her seat and started pacing her room furiously.

She had known Jai for many long years. Actually, truth be told, she knew her since they were kids. Her Father was a close friend of Jai's Father, they had studied together and had migrated to Mumbai together to try their luck in the hospitality business. However fate treated them differently. While the Walias went on to become the Class One Hoteliers in the city and the country, the Dixits were left behind in the race. Not that the two friends minded, they held onto each other during happy and sad times. While the Walias were blessed with a son, the Dixits became proud parents of two girls, with a two year gap, after a couple of years. Like the Fathers, the children also became friends, and life moved on smoothly.

Disaster struck after a few years when both Uday Walia and Rakesh Dixit bidded for a certain project and Rakesh Dixit won the bid, much to everybody's surprise as also to his own. Some of the well-wishers instigated Uday Walia that Rakesh Dixit had won the project through underhand dealings and they showed some evidence supporting their allegations. The two friends had a major showdown that night and the night witnessed the collapse of a lifelong friendship and all vows of friendship bit the dust. The relation between the two families also deteriorated and after a few weeks, the two families stopped being in terms with each other. The Walia-Dixit split made headlines in Mumbai's business and cocktail circuits.

The following years saw frenzied activities in both the camps, though the growth pattern of the Walia Chain was humungous while the Dixits struggled mainly due to Rakesh Dixit's failing health. He had not taken the break well like Uday, but unlike Uday he failed to turn the pain into a driving force, rather the separation ate down his defences gradually. But he never neglected his daughters while a motherless Jai now took the brunt of a missing but over-active Father in his life. It was then Maasi had stepped in, who brought up Jai like her own child, fulfilling all duties of a parent.

When Jai celebrated his 26th birthday, his Father called him in his Study one day and questioned him about his future plans. Jai had let his Father know that he wanted to pursue an MBA course in USA and as per his Father's request, he would help him with the Family Business only after his return 3 years back. Uday Walia had acquiesced to his son's request. Jai, being a very good scholar, received his chance very soon and not before long, he was off to his dream destination, en route New York. Uday Walia had some work in NY and so he accompanied his son and they spent a few days there.

It was there that Jai had bumped into Bani.

No Bani wasn't studying there. She and her two friends had gone on a tour to a few American cities and they were supposed to leave for India two days later. She was also staying at the same hotel with her friends. And no, they didn't recognize each other when they nearly stonewalled into each other at the Hotel lobby.

Jai never knew that he would miss his country so much within a few days of his leaving India and his friends and everybody and was in a bad mood, he had not even seeing where he was going – well he was walking towards the ladies' restroom. When he felt somebody walking into him with the speed of a missile and within seconds, both of them were sprawled on the ground. Well it was a cute girl with a button nose, sparkling angry eyes and very nice lips, Jai noticed. It seemed she was crying alright.

He quickly scrambled to his feet and pulled her up.

The girl asked him angrily 'What are you doing in this area? Cant expect any man to be different, what say?'

Jai looked all round him and then noticed that he was standing in front of the ladies' washing room. His face turned scarlet with embarrassment. He looked at the sparkling eyes and said

'Well Miss, I am sorry. I certainly didn't look much as to where I was heading for. Of course, its my fault.'

The girl replied 'You know every man says the same thing. In future, please look at where you are heading for.'

She walked off towards the main lobby, Jai noticed, her long black hair bouncing on her back. In spite of the embarrassment Jai was happy to meet an Indian, reminded him of his country, his home on the beachfront. He sighed and made for his room.

The next morning, Jai stepped out his room and without much preamble, after a few steps walked into someone. To his horror, he found that it was the same girl, whom he had sent flying on the floor the previous evening and the girl was evidently very angry.

She said angrily 'You again? What the hell is wrong with you? Here I am all upset and stuff and here you are walking and bumping into me all the while.'

Jai was about to retort angrily when he saw that the girl's eyes were red, seemed she had cried all night. Well, like any normal male, he could not stand women crying and took out his handkerchief, as fresh tears spilled out from her eyes. He took her by her elbow and guided her to the lobby sofa situated at the end of the corridor. He sat down beside her and asked her sincerely

'Now tell me what's happened? I noticed last evening too that you were very upset. Maybe I could help'.

The girl looked up questioningly 'Are you sure? You don't look that powerful at all'.

Jai's face broke into a grin and he said 'You are right. I am absolutely new over here. But my Father is with me. He's a very reputed businessman and he has whole lots of associates and friends over here who are definitely in a position to help, of course if the situation merits help at all.'

After a few minutes of contemplation, the girl said 'Actually I have come to US with two of my friends for a one-month tour. We have some common friends staying in different parts of the country like in Chicago, LA and others and we were supposed to take the return flight day after tomorrow.' The girl blew into Jai's handkerchief, but to Jai it seemed the most beautiful thing in the world. The girl was already a vision but she wasn't older than 19 or 20, he guessed. Dressed in a comfortable pair of jeans and a baby pink pullover with her hair pulled back in a ponytail, she looked like a lost kid. And very beautiful too.

The girl continued 'But one of my friends, Nisha is missing since yesterday afternoon. We had informed the hotel and the local police station but we haven't found any trace of her. What will I say to Auntie and Uncle?' the girl broke down again.

Jai sat stupefied for a while; he then tried to soothe the girl by patting her arm and head. He did not know how to respond but realized that he would have to contact his Ftaher. Sending the girl to her room, which was in the same floor as their's, Jai quickly punched his Father's emergency number. Within an hour or so, Uday Walia was back at the hotel and after listening to Jai, had contacted a few of his friends in NY, some of them pretty powerful businessmen in the area. A massive search was started once again and after several hours of grueling search, Nisha was found at the house of a friend, only known to Nisha, after having being piled with drug-laced drinks. Bani and her other friend, Mary was shocked. They remembered Nisha telling them that she was going out with some friends whom she had chanced to meet here in NY and despite protests by the other two girls, she had carried on. Nisha was immediately hospitalized and her parents informed. Her friend was arrested. Nisha's friends had agreed to fly down immediately to escort her back to India after she was released from the hospital. The other two girls were given permission to catch their flight back home after two days.

Once Nisha was hospitalized, Bani and her friend had copiously thanked Jai for helping them out and for saving Nisha. Jai smiled at both of them and …

… that started the life long friendship between the two, irrespective of the age difference. Yes, Jai came to know later, the girl was only 19 as he had guessed. Neither he nor his Father knew that she was a Dixit, as yet.

Jai and his Father were to stay for 3-4 days more in NY before Sr. Walia left for India and Jai would take his flight to Chicago. The day Jai saw off the girls at the airport, he called them back and handed over a packet containing assortment of chocolates, gums and stuff.

At last, he extended his hand out at the girl and said 'Well, I am Jai. Hope to meet you soon.'

The girl had grasped his hand and smiled 'I am Bani. We will definitely meet. Friends?'

Jai nodded. Mary placed her hand on top of theirs and said 'I am Mary. And I am sure you guys will meet soon. And will be friends all your lives.'

All three broke out into peals of laughter and after exchanging email ids, they all made their separate ways.

'Bani, nice name', Jai thought and shook his head slightly.

Boarding the steps of the aircraft, Bani remembered the warmth of the hand that clasped her's and thought 'Jai, well named, must say. And exquisitely handsome too.'

She stumbled into Mary this time.
