Part VIII

The Preparations

Jai reached home at around 8 o'clock to find Masi ready to go a-visiting the Dixits. Jai had intended to return home early but at the last minute, an important client had turned up and he had to stay back to finish discussing and finalising the deal aspects before leaving for the day. But he wanted to be somewhere else. He didn't protest and walked wearily towards his room as Masi continued to scold him for returning home late.


As he climbed up the stairs, Jai realized that he was in a dilemma. While a part of him wanted to go to the Dixits and have a good time and meet Bani, another part of him wanted to stay back and moon over his state of affairs although he didn't know exactly why. But he knew that Masi would not leave him in peace and he would have to face thousand types of queries from her. He felt that it was easier to go with her and attend the Dinner rather than answer Masi's penetrating queries.

Jai showered quickly and changed into a pair of deep blue jeans and a black Polo T-shirt. Picking up his mobile phone he headed towards the hall. Masi was pacing in the hall impatiently, waiting for him. Without wasting any time, the duo made their way to the Dixit Residence, Jai driving Bani's Lancer while Babu, their Driver, drove Jai's BMW, with Masi dozing off slightly in the backseat.


Jai drove at a leisurely pace allowing Babu to overtake him. He knew that this Lancer was Bani's prized possession, a gift from her Father when she had successfully managed to finalise a string of deals for their tottering chain. Their business had been on an upswing ever since, Jai thought with a bemused smile on his face. Today, sitting in the driver's seat, Jai felt very conscious of himself, as if in Bani's presence. He slid his hands smoothly over the steering wheel, then the dashboard. It felt as if he was invading Bani's personal territory. But he wanted to know Bani better, much better than he presently knew. A sigh escaped him when he realized that such a thing would probably not happen.


At the traffic intersection, his fingers found their way to the glove compartment. It was not locked, Jai realized. Usually Bani was the organised one, she kept everything in their proper places, arranged methodically and systematically. In this respect, she was the same person both in her personal and official lives. Too methodical and systematic and organised. Wonder what it will take to mess with her beautiful head? Jai thought. Probably he already had a glimpse this morning, a faint smile spread on his face. He stepped on the gas and the car sped down the crowded road.


When he reached the Dixit residence, he was greeted with the sounds of cheerful voices and laughter. Masi was waiting for him in the porch. As they entered the house together, Jai whispered to Masi that once dinner was over, she should cook up something about her health and thus make an excuse for both of them, then they would be able to leave at the earliest. His suggestion earned him a nudge from Masi in his abdomen and he yelped in surprise. They were met at the door by Rano, who as usual was dressed sportily in a black Capri, coordinated with a matching Lotto T-shirt. She welcomed them warmly and escorted Masi and Jai to the Hall where everyone else had assembled.

Jai's eyes scanned for Bani in the hall but did not find her anywhere in the vicinity. He saw Mayank seated at the far end of the hall, still dressed in his casuals, talking animatedly with Bani's Father. Bani's Mother was flitting in and out of the kitchen. As Jai settled down in a sofa, he noticed another girl of around Rano's age, staring at him unabashedly. Jai gave her a casual glance and noticed in amusement that the girl was turning an interesting shade of red. Jai was aware of his effect on girls, and he had his share of casual flings but he had not been bound in any relation simply because the person in his dreams had always evaded him, whom he could call his soul mate. Until now.


'Hi Jai', Mayank chipped in after a while as he joined Jai in the main hall.


'Mayank, it's a pleasure meeting you', Jai said as he enveloped Mayank's hand in a warm bear grip. 'You haven't changed even.'


Mayank's face extended in a wide grin as he replied good naturedly
'I know man. But kya karoon? I am not the Boss you see, so I couldn't afford to go to my apartment, shave, shower and then attend Dinner, and not earn Bani's wrath'.

Jai also grinned along with Mayank. Soon Bani's Mother also joined them and everybody fell into a companionable discussion arena. Only Bani was missing, Jai noted.


After an agonizing 15 minutes or so he gave up and went inside, leaving the others in a warm cacophony of sounds. He went straight to the kitchen as that the most likely place for Bani to be in, he thought. He was bang on target.

Bani was so busy preparing for dinner that she did not sense anyone entering the kitchen. She was feeling guilty for not being able to go and meet the others but she decided to finish the cooking first, so that she wouldn't have had to excuse himself after every few minutes to check out the food. Mom had insisted on helping but Bani had insisted on cooking the entire meal herself, with little help from her Mother. After all, it was after quite some time that Jai and Masi had come for Dinner. And of course, Mayank was also there.


She was startled out of her wits when she felt her dupatta being secured firmly around her neck. Instinctively, she knew that it was Jai. But she continued with dressing the salad.

Jai leant against the kitchen counter, beside her, and said 'Bani, I guess its not a good idea to wear chiffon materials while you are working in the kitchen. Something sensuous like chiffon belongs to amorous settings, don't you think?'


Bani stopped her task at hand and looked back at him
'Jai, my mistake entirely. Shouldn't have worn this thing over here, I agree. Now don't get mad at me, I promise I will be more careful in future.'


Jai was now lazily chewing a piece of cucumber which he had confiscated from the salad bowl. His stomach was churning and growling, the smell of delicious food wafting around the kitchen had made him hungry. He nodded his head at Bani and continued eating bits and pieces from the counter top. After a second, he hoisted himself up on the counter and crossed his legs in front, in effect blocking Bani's way out totally.


Bani stood with her hands on her hips 'Bad manners Jai. You need to be thrashed severely. And how the hell am I supposed to go to the other side to get the remaining ingredients?', she said incredulously.


A glint in Jai's eyes told her that her apparently innocent questions were going for a toss now. Jai answered slowly, biting every word, as they left his mouth

'I would love to be thrashed, especially by YOU. Haven't received any trashing for quite some time.'


With his glittering eyes now fixed on her wide-with-surprise eyes, he uttered the next words


'And you can always scramble to the opposite side dear, well as you see, across and over my legs'.


That earned him the expression he was yearning to see. Bani's shyness quotient perked up and manifested itself by turning the hapless victim completely beetroot red as all blood in her body raced to her face and throat. After a few moments, the onrush of blood still prevailed on her face, but the shyness was now replaced by a maddening anger. Jai started counting his fortunes, this side of Bani was actually not unknown to him, and he had seen the preview only once or twice. He regretted his actions immediately.
