Chapter 3
As Bani was about to slip out the door, Jai slammed it in her face and held it shut with his hand to prevent her escape. "You're not going anywhere." His guttural voice was almost a growl. He towered over her, about half a head taller than her five foot seven inches.
Turning to his father, he asked, "If Bani refuses to marry me, am I free to marry Pia with your blessings?"
"No!" Karan roared. "Apologize to Bani right now. I wouldn't marry you if I were her โฆโฆ. after all that you said to her and about her and after that scene you and your hippy girlfriend created just now. Either you persuade Bani that she should marry you, and then marry her, or follow your black lacy chick to her hell hole and don't come back" he said with finality in his voice.
Sarika nodded to her son with a hopeful smile and said "You've always liked Bani. Show her that Jai."
"Show some forgiveness, Bani darling." Dharam inclined his graying head in her direction. "Jai's just angry. He'll get over it soon enough honey."
Thoroughly mortified, Bani blinked back hot tears. "You've made it clear how much you hate me. The man I thought I loved could never act the way you did. He'd never be so cruel to me. I never want to see you again Jai Walia. Move out of my way and let me go!" screamed Bani.
"Let me talk to her in private" said Jai. Jai leaned his shoulder against the door, putting his entire weight against it, barring her way when she tried to wrench it open.
Bani turned her back on him, crossing her arms over her chest, tapping her foot on the Italian tile, flipping her hair over her shoulder. "There's nothing you can say or do to make me spend another minute with you. I don't need this and I definitely don't need you" said Bani.
Their parents hesitated, lingering at the bottom of the ornate curved staircase. A myriad of ancestors stared down at them from the picture gallery on the wall climbing the staircase.
A growl rumbled in Jai's throat. "Leave us alone, please. I need to talk to Ms. Dixit" said Jai to his parents and Bani's.
Karan put his hand on his wife's back, "let's go" he murmured in her ear. To his son, he said louder, "Call us down as soon as you've made a decision." Then all four of the elder adults disappeared without another comment.
"You never called me Ms. Dixit before. Does it make you sick to call me by my name, now?" asked Bani.
Fed up, she marched for the back of the house. The front door wasn't the only entrance to the mansion. She'd just leave through the back door. If she had to, she'd crawl out the window as long as she could escape. She had had enough of the Jai Walia.
Jai's hand shot out, grabbing her wrist. Hauling her against him, he glared into her upturned face and said to her "I didn't start this fiasco Bani, but I'll finish it. You were willing enough to go along with their crazy plans before, you can do it now too."
"Why? Because you're brimming over with so much gratitude Jai? Because you're desperately in love with me and can't live without me? Because I'll get something out of this arrangement?" accused Bani, Snorting, she felt like spitting in his face.
How did she ever think that this swarthy, Greek kinda handsome hunk would be so cruel in reality, she'd never know had she not seen for herself. Her little brother was right. He looked like a rich camel driver. From now on, she'd run from every swarthy male that crossed her path. She'd only look at blondes and redheads or baldies in future. Dark haired men spelled trouble.
"And for your information Jai, I was not willing to go along with this crazy plan. I didn't know anything about it until you did. Do you honestly think I'd go along with this? That I'd want to marry you?" said Bani.
"Look at me, Bani." Jai's voice softened. There was even a trace of huskiness that was almost her undoing. Surprised, she glanced over her shoulder and silently cursed herself for her foolishness. Didn't she know that she had a soft spot in her traitorous heart for this man? Didn't she know he could get anything from her he wanted when he was soft and gentle and kind? She wished that he would stay angry and abrupt. Then she could resist him.
"Why should I look at you? You can't stand to look at me, that is what you said remember" retorted Bani.
But Bani turned half way to look at him despite her words. Glancing down at her figure that was cute and petite, but by no means the brick-house-build that Pia possessed, Bani grimaced. "I look like a tomboy compared to your fiance don't I."
She held out her straight, silky naturally black hair and looked at it cross-eyed and added further. "I don't have bottled blonde hair, either. I'm not your type Jai. To quote your hippy honey โฆโฆ.. I'm boring, dull, and pathetic. You don't even want me as a friend" said Bani glaring at Jai all the time.
Shaking Jai's hand off her arm, Bani stepped back a pace and squared off against him, her hands fisted on her hips, she said "I want to be with someone who appreciates me. Who likes me. Who loves me."
It was Bani's turn to look him up and down disdainfully. "And that's obviously not you Jai Walia, not by a looonnnnngggggggg shot."
Jai's hand crept up to her shoulder. His other hand landed heavily on her other shoulder and he gazed down into her face, his mouth set in a grim line. "Look Bani. I've worked hard for the company. I've earned my place and my brother doesn't have one iota of business sense. If I leave now, the company will go under when Dad retires. I can't let that happen" said Jai, trying to explain his stand to Bani.
"Don't you mean you don't want to lose your inheritance?" blurted Bani. Her brow tented and she notched her chin higher.
"With your MBA, and your experience, you can move to another good company. Maybe a better one. Maybe you're scared you can't make it on your own without your daddy dear's help?" said Bani, adding further insult.
Jai shook his head and said "You're not getting it Bani. I don't want to work for just any organization. I want to run the company that my grandfather built. I don't care about money."
"What about your fiance Jai?" The word fiance tasted like arsenic on her lips and she tried to block the image of his busty, lacey, peroxide girlfriend from her mind, failing which she added "You'll lose her, won't you, and that is what all this is about?"
"I hope to God she'll wait for me" said Jai. His voice lowered, breaking on the word wait Jai hitched his thumbs through the belt loops of his faded blue jeans and his shoulders slumped, almost making her feel sorry for him. Almost.
Bani closed her eyes as pain slammed into her anew, she didn't know who felt worse, him or her, but she'd heard enough. Stomping on his foot with all her might, she reeled and jerked the front door open and sprinted for her car. On top of everything else Jai thought she was crazy. If she married him now she would be certifiable inside the first month.
"Bani wait! I'll make you a deal." The sound of heavy footsteps followed her, their echoes pounding in her ears and Bani braced herself for further confrontation.
"Deal? What type of deal can you make me that I'd want?" Bani stopped so abruptly, Jai almost plowed her over. Turning, she forced herself to look at him, wondering what he could offer that she would possibly want.
"I'll give you half of my half of the company" said Jai and he stood expectantly, watching her closely.
Walia Industries was a Fortune 500 company, but money didn't mean anything to Bani beyond having enough to pay her bills. Her job sufficed to cover them quite nicely thus she didn't need any more. Still, it was a stunning offer, and amazing considering how much the family business meant to Jai.
"Why? I thought it meant more to you than even Pia or Kia or whoever she is?" Bani smiled sweetly and innocently up at him.
Bending his head back, he closed his eyes. His long dark lashes made crescents on his cheeks. He rubbed the back of his neck with his hand, the muscles in his arm straining as it stretched behind his head.
"Why? Because half is better than nothing Bani. Because I stand to lose the entire thing if you say no" said Jai trying to reason with Bani.
Bani stared at him thoughtfully. She was definitely a tough cookie to crack. "And you think that is enough compensation for being miserable with you for three years?" she asked him quizzically.
"Go take a hike Jai Walia โฆโฆโฆ.. you can shuv your half up โฆโฆโฆ u know where, and your lacy gal pal will be more than happy to help you do that, I'm out of here, I've had enough of you to last me a lifetime" said Bani and was now ready to turn and walk away.
"Just let me go, we have to be able to criticize what we love, to say what we have to say 'cause if you're not trying to make something better, then as far as I can tell, you are just in the way."
Humour for the day
The genie
A sales rep, an administration clerk and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp. They rub it and a Genie comes out in a puff of smoke. The Genie says, "I usually only grant three wishes, so I'll give each of you just one." "Me first! Me first!" says the admin clerk. "I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without a care in the world." Poof! She's gone.
In astonishment, "Me next! Me next!" says the sales rep. "I want to be in Hawaii, relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of pina coladas and the love of my life." Poof! He's gone.
"OK, you're up," the Genie says to the manager. The manager says, "I want those two back in the office after lunch."

Two Italians, Luigi and Antonio, met on the street.

"Dona talka to me, Luigi," replied Antonio. "I been inna jail."

"Wella, Luigi," Antonio said, "I was lying onna dis beach, and the cops come, arrest me and throw me inna jail."
