Part25
The next day bani was taking rest after returning from college when saahil stormed into the room.
Saahil: "hey sleeping beauty wake up."
Bani: "sleeping beauty?"
Saahil: "bani I have no time, get up fast."
Jay(from behind): "saahil why are you disturbing bani? Tumhe pata hai na uski tabeeyat kuch khas achchi nahi hai."
Saahil: "mamaji bas do minute."
Bani: "kyun maggi banwana hai kya?"
Saahil(impatiently): "haaan ab chalo bhi."
All of them went to a living room and saahil arranged some of the furnitures while jay and bani looked at each other with confusion. After 10 minutes or so saahil finished his work. He took out some sheets out of his bag and sat on the sofa. After he finished searching the particular page he searched for, he spoke.
Saahil: "bani tumne toh notice mein padha hoga na ke humare 3rd year ko ek intercollege competition mein play mein part lena hai. A play on 'fairy tales'. Rano ne 'the sleeping beauty' suggest kiya hai and the problem is that classes ke baad main kisise rehearsal bhi nahi kara paa raha hoon. So for the time-being you play the princess. Actually mujhe ek scene mein thodi problem ho rahi hai, abhi mujhe dekhna hai ke main jaise chahta hoon, waisa kaisa lagega."
Bani: "ok mr. director mujhe kya karna hoga?"
Saahil: "kuch khas nahi. Bus sleeping beauty ki tarah soye rehna hai aur jab prince aayega toh tumhe uth kar khade hona hai aur phir dono ko kuch der ek dusre ko dekhna hai. bas."
Bani: "and who will be the prince?"
Saahil: "waise toh mera dost aanewala tha par shayad usey der ho jaaye. Tab tak………. Tab tak………. Yes tab tak jay mama ban jayenge prince.
Jay: "me? Are you mad or what?"
Saahil: "mamaji please help me. Bas ek chota sa scene hi toh hai. pleeeeeeeease."
Jay: "toh mujhe ghode par chahad ke aana hoga kya?"
Saahil: "no no nothing like that. now let's begin. Bani tum achchi tarah aankhen bandh karke let jao aur mamaji main jab kahoonga action tab aapko bani ke bed ke saamne khade hokar ek gaana gana hai. phir bani tum uth jana, mamaji aap bani ko pakdenge aur aap dono ek dusre ko thodi der dekhenge. Is that clear?"
Bani: "saahil jay gaana gayega?"
Jay: "kyun kya problem hai mere gaane se?"
Bani(suppressing her smile): "agar mujhe sach mein neend aa gayi toh?"
Jay(making a face): "so funny. Ha ha."
Saahil: "arre nahi gaana background mein bajega aapko bas lipping karna hai."
Jay: "lekin gaana kaun sa hai?"
Saahil(frustrated): "oh aap gaane ko bhul jao, lipping mat karna, gaana aise hi bajega. Ab start kare pleeeease."
Bani lied on the sofa and closed her eyes; twice she opened them only to find saahil asking her to close her eyes. She heard saahil say 'action' and then realised that jay was approaching. As the song started to play bani opened her eyes gradually and saw jay standing in front of her offering his hand for her to get up. She took his hand to get up and then jay held her arms. They looked at each others eyes and then looked deeper and deeper as deeper they could, for how long they had no idea. It was saahil's loud voice that broke the spell.
Saahil(busy keeping the phone in his pocket): "hey aap log abhi tak khade hai? it's over. Sorry rano ne call kiya tha thodi der pehle, but then I told you people that the scene was over. May be you didn't hear. By the way the scene was wonderful. Bani I wish tum mere year mein hoti, I would have definitely casted you and only you for the role of princess. And jay mama you were too good. Wow what expressions! By god agar mera bas chalta toh main aap dono ko hi le leta play mein. Uff! what a chemistry, what a pair!"
Jay glanced at bani and then left after wishing 'good luck' to saahil. He went to his room and stood by the window. Although he tried to avoid the thoughts yet they came back as soon as he tried to throw them out of his mind. He knew there was a strange feeling in his heart, something new, something that he couldn't explain. But a realization struck him. He believed that he saw something very different in bani's eyes. The eyes that promised themselves to make a place in jay' eyes. What? Did bani like him? But………. May be she liked him.
Jay thought "No, this shouldn't happen. She shouldn't find new relationships in our friendship. She will be hurt if things don't go her way. May be my presence in her life being new and stronger from her other new friendships, she is falling for me. But what if I am wrong in my judgement? I need to get sure before it's too late. Yes I must stop this. I must." He went out of his room and then saw saahil and bani still talking to each other regarding the play. Jay looked at bani who was already looking at him and then went for a stroll in the garden.
That day after dinner while going to his room jay noticed the door of bani's room opened. He moved towards the room and saw bani reading a book titled '100 love letters'. He was surprised to find bani reading such a book. He sneaked in the room and stood behind her armchair before she noticed him. But what was that? jay saw bani reading a course book placed between two pages of the other book jay saw. He enquired about it in whose reply she casually said may be it was done to draw his attention as he was exceptionally silent at dinner. Jay glanced at bani and while leaving wished her 'good night' hesitantly.
Once more jay thought that bani was falling for him. She was a sweet friend. He can't make her life get miserable. It's too hard to remain happy if the one you love doesn't reciprocate your feelings. He can't let bani fall for him, because he believed he didn't have any such feelings for her. She was just a good friend, may be a very good friend anyone would love to have. But love, no way jay walia can't love her. He needed to set some limits between their relationships so that the intimacy doesn't reach the next level, from where bani will find it hard to come back. Oh god, he can't see bani in pain. He must take some actions. She should realize the truth. She should. But how will he be able to do so? He needed to be very careful, he can't hurt her the slightest. Hmmm… this is going to be hard.

Part26
For the next two days jay was trying to behave a bit differently with bani. In a way that no one could notice but which surely was of some help, he believed. He occassionally missed out his jogging, even he spent less time with her giving the excuse of huge workload due to his father's absence. At times he caught bani standing by the window all lost in thoughts but few minutes later he used to find her having fun with masi or saahil or aditya. When he was all alone, he himself didn't find what was hurting him so much. He didn't realize that he wanted to talk to her more, the way they used to do before. But he was jay walia, he needed to sort things out for his friend without even cosidering the fact that it didn't suit him.
Within two days he started believing that he was getting success in his mission as bani has found new interests filling up his partial absence.
Friday evening
While having his evening tea jay asked masi about bani's whereabouts. Masi replied that she had gone to jigyasa's house straight from college and ranveer or saahil will drop her there at before dinner. Jay mused wondering how bani has already begun with shifting her interests. But what about him? Although he didn't speak much to her nowadays yet atleast they talked. He missed her presence, her lively nature and the way she was free with him. Come on jay you must act as a responsible friend, he thought. Thus the conclusion was whatever is happening is good for her.
Two hours later jay heard giggles. He knew it was bani. He came out of his room and saw bani holding ranveer's arms and giggling like she did with jay? A sudden feeling of jealousy creeped in his heart. That was his place not ranveer's.
'How could she be so free with him and that too so soon? Come on bani you know you have a special friend called jay.' While he thought these stupid things he noticed bani and ranveer whispering and laughing and blushing.
'What is wrong with bani? If i don't speak to her for two days that means she will enjoy her time with someone else? Come on jay what are you thinking? Ranveer is a new friend and that too only 4 years older than her. Definitely she will be more comfortable with him. What does that mean? And look at ranveer, as if he has found some treasure. He looks so cheerful with her unlike the way he is with others. Is he seriously considering bani as his girl the way his dadi likes? No but why no? that means….. bani didn't have any infatuation on me? Did i misinterpret? Really? So bani never liked me the way i guessed?' Now this realization made him feel worse. Because it was this reason for which he reduced his interactions with her but more than that the fact hurt that bani didn't had a crush on him and there were so many reasons for her to fall for ranveer. No bani can't do this to him. Bani's voice brought him back to the real world.
Bani(laughing): "jay kya kar rahe ho tab se wahan? Idhar aao ek bahut hi zaruri baat batani hai tumhe." She looked from the corner of her eye at ranveer who smiled at her. This infuriated jay.
Jay: "no you people enjoy your time, what will I be doing there?"
Bani: "jay aao na pleeeeeease jaldi."
Jay(couldn't refuse her): "kya baat hai?"
Bani: "pata hai jay, main aur ranveer….." she started blushing.
Jay(in shock): "tum aur ranveer…… kya?"
Bani(clearing her throat): "main aur ranveer aaj shopping par gaye the aur phir wahan ranveer ne mujhe…….."
Jay(impatiently): "ranveer ne kya?"
Bani: "ranveer ne mujhe apni girlfriend raashi se milaya."
Jay was already feeling tensed that the sudden revealation left him speechless. He stared at bani then at ranveer and then again at bani. Finally when he was convinced that bani was telling the truth, he heaved a sigh of relief and then smiled a bit.
Bani: "what jay? Kuch bolo bhi. Ranveer told me you know raashi."
Jay(controlling his excitement): "yes raashi is a pretty girl. Way to go ranveer." He then excused himself.
Bani patted her forehead. When ranveer asked the reason of her doing so, she explained how unromantic jay was. Atleast he should have given some oldy advice if not showing interest in his love life. Oh he is so boring!!!!!!!
Half an hour later
Bani in her usual happy-go-lucky manner went to jay's study where she saw jay busy with his work.
Bani: "jay maine suna hai tum mathematics mein kaafi bright ho."
Jay(not looking at her): "hmmm…."
Bani: "ok then I challenge you. main tumhe basic maths se do-teen question poochoongi aur tumhe unke sahi answers dene hai. ek bhi jawab galat hua toh main jeet jaoongi aur phir tum woh karoge jo main kahoongi. Bolo manjur hai?"
Jay(still not looking at her): "ok. Par agar main jeeta toh tum woh karogi jo main kahoonga. Is that ok with you?"
Bani(confident of her success): "no problem boss! Now this will be rapid fire. I am starting. How much is 10*10?"
Jay: "100"
Bani: "100*10?"
Jay: "1000"
Bani: "1000-10?"
Jay: "990"
Bani fell silent. Jay looked at her for the first time since she entered the study. He knew, he won. Meanwhile bani wondered how jay answered so perfectly even when he was doing his work simultaneously. She remembered that just 10 minutes ago ranveer and masi both fell trapped to the last question and she had already bagged rewards from them.
(actually the trick is that: when it is done fast i.e 1*10 = 10, 10*10 = 100, 100*10 = 1000, 1000-10 becomes 10000 or at times 900 instead of 990).
Bani: "ok you on. Tell me what I have to do?"
Jay: "would you really do that for me?"
Bani: "it's a woman's word."
Jay: "ok then don't speak to me for the next 24 hrs."
Bani looked at him with surprise but when she saw the determination in his face she didn't even utter a single word and with teary eyes she left the study. While wiping her tears she remembered how jay has started keeping a distance with her all of a sudden. Was she so annoying, disturbing or……… or…….. she didn't know what was wrong. May be jay doesn't want her to be an important part of his life. May be he still finds her too childish for his friendship. But it never seemed so……. Ok fine if he doesn't want to talk then no one is even dying to talk to him.
On the otherhand jay tried to analyse why did he ask for such a weird reward. His mood was actually not fine. Although bani told that ranveer has a girlfriend that too raashi which he had every reason to believe as both ranveer and raashi were classmates and very good friends, his mind was upset. The thought of bani and ranveer together or bani with anyone just drove him crazy. He was fighting with his own emotions when bani's presence made him feel uncomfortable. Thus he ended up asking for such a stupid reward. But after that also his condition didn't improve rather it worsened. So there was no exchange of 'good night' wishes even, to talk to each other was beyond thoughts……
