LAHORE, Pakistan (CNN) -- A Pakistan International Airlines plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Multan Airport in eastern Pakistan Monday, killing all 45 people aboard, city officials told CNN.
The plane with 41 passengers and 4 crew was en route from Multan to Lahore shortly after midday when it went down in clear weather only a few miles past the end of the runway, according to representatives of the airline.
"The plane lost contact with the control tower about two minutes after takeoff. We don't know what happened to it," an engineer for the airline, Mansoor A. Rahi told The Associated Press.
Mohammed Nadeem, a jeweler who lives near the crash site, said the plane had been rotating sideways in the air before it hit the ground.
