"Bani...pia ka phone aaya tha..." kiran said as she served breakfast...poha... something which bani hated to eat and whined till she made a different dish for her, today she was eating it with no complaints...

"Kab..." bani asked sipping water...

"Kal raat ko..."

"How is she?? Unki tabiyat kaisi hain...delivery ki date de di..." bani said, pia was expecting her second child...

"Haan, delivery main abhi time hain..."

"Aur kya kahaa..." bani said finishing the poha getting up, searching for her bag...

"Keh rahin thi ki bohot mushkil ho rahi hain...kaam waali time pe nahin aati...aur fir sab akele hi karna padta hain...harsh bhi toh chota hain..."

"Toh didi ko yahaan aane keh dijiye..."

"Pushkar ko akela chodke kaise aayegi..."

"Kya baat hain maa..." bani stood straight, peering over her mother...certainly she wanted to say something, twisting the tale round and round...

"Woh keh rahi thi ki hum Mubai shift hojaye...usko bhi help hojayegi aur fir hum paas rahenge toh acha hoga..." kiran said, dreadfully waiting for bani's reaction

"Maa main Mumbai nahin jaaoongi...pehle ek baar hum baat kar chuke hain...didi ko parehsani ho rahin hain, aap jaake rahiye wahaan par...main kahin nahin aa rahin hoon..." bani said stoically... walking away... kiran stood helplessly...

"Masi, woh theek rehegi na..." jai asked again, waving to Krishna who was sprinting inside the school...waving her vigorously...

"Jai, bas bhi kar...woh theek hain..." masi said pulling him back...he was already following Krishna inside...

"Chal ab...mujhe ghar chod de aur tu office jaa..."

"Masi, ek baar dekhke aata hoon...fir chalenge..." jai said...

"Jai...chal ab..." masi had to literally drag him into the car...

The entire ride he kept fretting if Krishna would be fine... giving up masi threw him a mean look, shutting his mouth...

Bani couldn't concentrate on anything, he mother's pleading voice revolved round and round in her brain... they had already discussed this, last time when pia had come down, she suggested that they move to Mumbai, at least they would be nearby, her mother was also getting old with a few ailments, but Mumbai, a shrill chill ran down her spine...but her mother's face floated in front of her eyes, she had given her enough misery, enough to last this lifetime, she didn't want to cause her further pain, she also had her desire to play with her grandchildren, love them, it was only because of her that she was so far away from all relatives, her family, even her own daughter and grandson...at least she deserved some happiness... at least she could give her mother that much...

Jai looked perplexed, it was time Krishna would be left from the school...he picked up his phone...

"Hello...masi...Krishna agayi...theek hain woh...is she crying...masi..." jai rambled...

"Jai, tera kuch nahin ho sakta hain...krishna theek hain, main hi leke aayi...khaana khaa rahin hain...bas khush..." masi said...

"Theek hain na woh..." jai asked again...

"Jai, main phone rakh rahin hoon..." masi disconnected the line... ...jai frowned...okay he was a bit hyper but then he couldn't afford anything to happen to Krishna...

He pulled out the drawer; his eyes fell on sonali's smiling photo... He had forgotten he had a wife. Well, he knew, of course, but she had drifted away like everything in his past, a series of facts that no longer had any relevance. The memories, though, followed him as wives usually followed their husbands… ...It was nearly eight months after Krishna's birth...sonali's health had deteriorated, apart from excessive internal bleeding, her mental state has also changed, from a depressive state of mind, her brain had suddenly became hyper-active, and her extreme possessiveness towards Krishna was unslated, she had become into some another sonali he didn't know... ... She slept badly through the warm, unsurprising nights…She woke up frequently and even when sleep did come her body was rarely at rest, thrashing and flailing as if trying to break free of dreadful invisible manacles. At times she cried out in a language she did not speak…These agitated periods of sleep-speech were mercifully brief, and when they ended she would subside for a time, sweating and panting, into a state of dreamless exhaustion. Then abruptly she would awake again, convinced, in her disoriented state, that there was an intruder in her bedroom trying to harm Krishna. There was no intruder. The intruder was an absence; a negative space in the darkness…all she could think of was him walking into her room, taking away her child... ...it was during one of her relapses that she was driving and met with a terrible accident. After that there was not time to think or mourn her loss...he was too occupied looking after Krishna, had to shift half his office to his house working from home, but he didn't mind, she was the only thing left to him...and he realized that over a period of time love metamorphosed into a habit, it eventually did, and soon the love flew out and the habit remained forever, sonali had become something sort of a habit for him...she had stopped loving him in search of her child, while he had given up on her long back... ...

Bani tried to speak but her mother who was too busy knitting, not paying any heed to her...

"Maa...suno..." bani said

"Haan bol..."

"Acha hum Mumbai chalenge...theek hain..."

"Nahin koi zaroorat nahin hain...hum theek hain yahaan..." kiran said making the needles collide...

"Maa...I am sorry..."

"Nahin beta...main pagal hoon jo tujhe khush dekhna chahati hoon, teri shaadi dekhna chahati hoon...nahin mujhe kya hain, tu jaise bhi rahen..." kiran said angrily...bani held her forehead, she was back to her sentimental self...

"Maa...please hum jaa rahen hain...main kal ticket kara doongi...aur theek hain...main koshish karoongi...ab aap apna mood theek kijiye... " bani said taking away the bundle of wool...

"Sachi..." kiran's eyes shone...

"Haan baba..." bani smiled...

"Main kitni khush hoon..." kiran hugged her

"Acha, aaj khaana main banati hoon, aap araam kijiye..." bani got up, satisfied at bringing a smile to her mother's face... a repentance to his sins...

Jai patted Krishna to sleep but she was in no mood to sleep, sharing all her experience at the school... in her toothy voice...he smiled...Krishna looked so different, different than him, different than sonali...she had a curly bunch of bouncing hair, with hazel brown eyes...she was fair, sonali was also fair...but he never could draw symbolism between Krishna and them...maybe he never tried to or maybe he never wanted to... ...

"Bas krishu...now sleep..." jai said tugging her properly...

"Papa...sunnoo toh..." she said...

"Kal uthna hain ki nahin..."

"Haaaann..."

"Toh now sleep..."making her close her eyes...after sometime he heard her voice...

"Papa, aaj sabi ki mummy lene aayi par..." Krishna said, her eyes till closed... tears stung in jai's eyes...

"Mummy kahaan hain..." she asked in the most innocent manner...

"Beta mummy...bhagwaanji ke paas hain..." jai said trying to fight his own emotions...

"Kabhi nahin aayengi..." she questioned again...

"Beta so jao..." jai remained unmoved till she slept...then quietly slipping away... ... it was the only thing he can't give his daughter... ...

Bani distributed the chocolates among her students, she was going to miss them all, the children who taught her a different meaning of life, shown her a more bright life...

"Miss...aap mat jao na..." navarun said...

"Beta, mujhe jaana hoga..." bani said kissing his cheek...

"Main bhi aaoonga..." he said stubbornly...

"Apni mamma ko chodke...??"

"Haan..."

"Nahin beta...apni mamma ko kabhi pareshaan mat karna...unki baat sunna...and be a good boy...promise..."

"Promishh..."

Bani ruffled his hair before leaving hastily...holding back her tears...they would be leaving for Mumbai tomorrow... ...
