"I'll be relying on Ekta & Shobha Aunty to guide me in my film career" - Prachi Desai

By Subhash K. Jha, November 5, 2008 - 12:50 IST

One hit young and Prachi Desai is already in a controversy. First she's said to have miffed her mentor Ekta Kapoor by refusing to do her film. Now it's the Bhatts whom Prachi politely turned down, opting out of their much talked-about Jashn. Apparently, Abbas-Mustan who are working with Prachi on her second film Life Partner (with Tusshar Kapoor) have the actress contractually bound to ensure theirs is her second release.

Disarming in her honesty, Prachi doesn't beat around the bush regarding the embarrassing cul de sac. "It's true I'm out of Jashan. I really wanted to work with the Bhatts who have done such wonderful work with Kangna and other girls. I said yes thinking the dates that were with Abbas-Mustan could be adjusted. Unfortunately, it didn't work out. Fortunately the Bhatts aren't upset with me. We'll work together again very soon."

As for the supposed differences with her godmother Ekta Kapoor, Prachi is cool, "Ekta, her mom Shobha Aunty and I are too close for people to try and spoil our relationship. We don't only share an actress-producer bonding. I'm like a daughter in their family. And Shobha Aunty is as concerned about my film career. She advised me to wait until the release of Rock On before signing any new films. I'll always be relying on Ekta and Shobha Aunty to guide me through my film career."

Prachi doesn't flinch from admitting she declined a film offer from Balaji. "They had spoken to me about a film. But we hadn't signed a contract or anything. Like I said, Shobha Aunty and Ekta have told me to do what is best for my career. When I left their serial Kkasam Se, it was a heart-wrenching decision for me. I had become a part of the Balaji family and I was moving into an area where I had no experience at all. Luckily, Ekta encouraged me to do Rock On, although the role was that of a wife and mother-to-be and I had to play a woman older than I am. But then in Kkasam Se, I played a wife and a bahu. So I guess those years of experience came in handy when I finally did my first film."

After Rajeev Khandelwal in Aamir, Prachi is the second Balaji breakaway actor to make it big in films. "What Kkasam Se did for me in 2 years, Rock On has done in 2 hours. People used to say they wanted a bahu like Bani. Now they're saying they want a wife life Sakshi in Rock On. Farhan and Ritesh Sidwani's company used to get hatemail when they signed me on for their film. People were so upset because they felt a film career was taking me away from television."

Prachi is now done with television. "Going into films was a big risk. I was playing a character I knew little about. I was moving from one medium to another and also to an audience from a different age group. But I had age on my side. Even if I had failed there was enough time to make corrections. I'm so glad Rock On worked."

She credits the reality show 'Jhalak Dikhla Ja' with creating a bridge between TV and cinema. "The reality show allowed me to be more myself. After being the weepy Bahu and playing a woman between 30 and 40 for so long I had fun dancing. I think Jhalak... got me Rock On."

Today, Prachi has made her parents proud. "When as child I'd say I wanted to be an actress, they didn't take me seriously. At last the people around me are taking me seriously."

I don't know what you saw that makes you shocked. But let me elaborate what she said in English.

Rock on team was looking for a young, fresh girl who had poise and who also could appear younger than the 30-35 year old she was acting in KS. JDJ brought her to the front in front of varied audience. KS was a serial predominantly watched by women. Yes, the director saw her in JDJ and not KS. I don't know why it's bad if she says the show made her feel like teenager or a twenty year old. She didn't say anything negative about KS nor put down any of the cast, crew or the producer of KS.

Please lets not tarnish her 'public life' like some narrow minded people did with her 'personal life'. It just takes one comment to scar someone, but a lot more effort to put it back together.

In fact her words on KS speak for themselves.

"When I left their serial Kkasam Se, it was a heart-wrenching decision for me. I had become a part of the Balaji family and I was moving into an area where I had no experience at all. Shobha I agree with what you said.....I do not see what was so shocking in what Prachi said in that interview because as u said and even I have read, Prachi has never put down the serial KS.....I remember her saying that she came to fame with KS which is very close to her heart but it was because of JDJ she was recognized as the 20 yrs old Prachi Desai who could be herself.

Sheena_Row, thank you for being so open minded. Prachi is a young talented actress and it is good that she wants to explore her talents and she has the support of people who are from the Industry and belevies in her and will looks after her.Let's not be angry with her, let's be happy for her. Bani was just a character that Prachi brought to life but at the end of the day, she is still Prachi, an actress, you can bring life to any character she plays once she knows what the character is all about, and her life did not end with Bani, it began, so let her live it and be happy for her.I AM.
I miss her as Bani but I knew she will not be in KS all her life, she would move on sooner or later. So best of luck to her,

Sorry to post again but here is something I just found.

Here is an interview of Gurdeep's and what she had to say about KS when she is still part of the show....

"The role is indeed significant but doesn't she fear getting stuck in the saas-bahu groove? Gurdip makes an honest confession, 'I don't mind getting stuck in the rut since this is all what's happening. Even I would say that I am stuck in a rut but it is a good rut. There are only saas-bahu serials happening. If you don't want to do them, then what will you do? I don't want to waste my years. When my marriage happened, I took time off and when I start my family, I'll take time off again. By then, the face of Indian television will have hopefully changed and maybe I'll come back in a different genre like Desperate Housewives or something.'

Here is the link to check it out:

If Gurdeep's view on KS is that KS is a rut why malign Prachi for getting out of this so-called rut.

This seems to be a shocking bit of news to me😕😲

Hey Uvita, seriouly dont bother yaar. There is a lot of double standards! When I saw this interview of gurdeep first, I was like how come no one took offence to what Gurdeep said but are always ready to jump when PD says sth. Gurdeep sounded as if she had no choice and since some rut is better than nothing she took up KS. But oh well, everyone loved that interview of Gurdeep. Shows that ppl want to see only what they want to. Double standards!...Forget it Uvita!...

Thanks for the article. I am glad she refused EK movie at the rate they are flopping...The last one EMI also flopped despite having Sanjay Dutt in it. It's very risky to quit a know medium at the top to start at the bottom somewhere else. I hope she suceeds. It's funny that the producers of Rock on got hate mails...well a lot of people loved her as Bani and miss her....it's funny her saying that people now want a wife like saaksi. It's really hard to break the Bahu image and she lucked out working on JDJ and getting notcied for RO. TV is full of actors but they get stuck in an image and it's very hard to break it and people have to resign themselves to playing roles they don't seem at all excited about and feel they don't have any other option. As a fan I would rather she do something that made her happy than be somewhere under sufference when she thinks it's bad but has no other choice.
She worked very hard to make KS a success at a very young age and hope she keeps working hard and climbing the ladder of sucess.
