Caryn, I don't know if Indian guys still do that, but even here, in the US, divorces are still happening because the wife hasn't given him a child but the girlfriend has given him one. I don't know if you have seen the Hindi movie Astitva, but it deals with a philandering husband who throws his wife out of the house, because she happens to have a brief fling with her music teacher. This is an excellent movie and a must see for all women.

unfortunately female infanticide is still rampant in some remote villages of India mostly among the illiterates. Barathiraja's film Karuthamma deals with this subject. Good movie.
