Part 51 A
I looked at him for a long moment. He too looked at me but then his eyes travelled beyond me. he was looking behind me. i turned to look back at whatever he was looking. But i found nothing extraordinary, so i turned back to look at him. Just as my eyes stopped at him, i saw him change his expressions. I gave him a scrutinizing look. He returned an innocent look.
"nandini..cut the cake sweetheart" he spoke in a sugar-coated voice, but i wasn't listening to him. I moved towards the place where manik had been looking at that time. I could feel manik was following me. just as i reached there, a number of human figures jumped up from behind the wall.
I screamed out of fear and shut my eyes. Manik took me in a comforting embrace before i heard the chorus of
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY BHABHI"
Hearing familiar voices i opened my eyes. Mukti, bhai, cabir, navya, aliya, Dhruv and most importantly mom-dad, amma-appa, all of them were standing in front of me with naughty as well as sheepish grins!
My happiness knew no joys, i had tears in my eyes. Manik freed me from his hold, so that i could move ahead and greet them. I was so overwhelmed that it became difficult to speak. First of all i touched elder's feet and took their blessings, and the younger clan waited patiently. Both the mothers hugged me at once, whispering a happy birthday in my ears. I smiled ear to ear. Both dads patted my head and took me in a light embrace. As soon as i turned around, the gang engulfed me in a group hug. Our laughs and giggles echoed through the hall. I had never been so happy and excited and of course surprised on any of my birthday , before. All thanks to my husband because of whom this has been possible.
"okay guys common break the hug, let her breathe..." i heard my husband's voice , somewhere from the back. They broke the hug and the leg pulling , masti started. I reached to manik and without caring of the on-lookers, for the first time i indulged in PDA and placed an affectionate kiss on his cheek. And the smile that adorned his face now, was what i wanted.
"happy birthday" he wished again before placing a kiss on my forehead.
It was a moment, after which one feels that they can die happily, without any regrets. In that moment i was content, i had everything.
"awww, how sweet!" we heard the collective coos of the people around us and we turned to them. Elders had appreciative and affectionate look for us while the youngsters were looking ready for another round of naughtiness.
"time for the cake to be cut" manik announced to save ourselves from the banter. I cut the cake and fed the elders and when the turn of youngsters came, the whole room turned into a mad house. I was running away from cabir, who had a piece of cake ready to smear it on my face. Manik was running after navya, to take revenge from cabir and alia was running away from mukti. Bhai and Dhruv were helping mukti in the task'. Elders were enjoying our craziness.
