Chapter 1 - Back to home - Back to family
I took a last look of my dorm room and stepped out. It was my last day in this college. These 2 years of college had been a mixture of feelings. I have gone through almost every emotion here, let it be happiness, passion, pleasure, love...or let it be pain, anguish, hatred or longing.
I came out of my residency hall and glanced over to the boys' hostel across the road. I looked towards the shut window of his room, hoping to get a last glimpse of him. Maybe just maybe I didn't want to let go of him but was too adamant to accept it.
I took a long breathe and entered inside the taxi. My luggage was already set in the dickey and I had gone in to take my purse and say goodbye to my friends.
"Where would you like to go, young lady?" The cabbie asked. He was an elderly man, maybe in his late fifties.
"JFK," I said. "Be a little fast, please."
"Be more specific. I am new to town." He said, rather ordered which irked me. I didn't say anything considering his old age.
"John F. Kennedy International Airport," Totally oblivious to my tears that had made their way down to my cheeks, I forced a smile at him through the rear-view mirror. "Please, I am getting late."
He examined my face for a few seconds and then turned off the engine. "Let's talk."
"What?" I stared at him in disbelief. "See look, I need to get there as fast as possible. I am already late. I might even miss my flight," I spoke in a fast paced tone wiping off my cold tears which I had thankfully seen through the mirror.
"And maybe that's what you want," he spoke and gave me a moustache-y smile.
"What do you mean?"
"You are crying," he said as if he achieved some award for stating that.
"So? It's none one of your business," I spoke rudely.
"I don't want some idiot lovesick guy to chase my taxi to make you forgive him," he spoke and winked at me.
I took in his words for a while. "How did you do that..."
He laughed and said, "Nothing new to me. I'm in this business from the past 30 years. I recognized that heartbroken look on your face the moment you entered."
"I... I don't want to talk about it," I said and looked outside the window towards his room. "Nobody would follow your taxi, I assure you. Now can you please take me to the airport?"
"Fine, woman, you are too stubborn, eh?" He turned on the engine and accelerated. "People don't value things unless they are out of their lives. He'll come around soon."
I didn't reply and took out my cell phone from my handbag to keep myself busy. I checked his last seen, which was around 2 hours ago. I controlled myself for calling him for the twentieth time since morning. I called Aliya instead.
"Hey Cuchie Coo!" Aliya's shrill voice hit my ears. "You should have come to college! It was so much fun today! You know-"
"I left," I whispered cutting her in between.
She took some time to comprehend what I meant and then, in a teary voice, said, "No please," I heard Dhruv voice in the background asking him to check his guitar strings, "You can't do this to me. You promised."
"I am sorry. I had no other choice," I spoke feeling guilty for breaking my promise.
"This is wrong. This is so wrong and you know that!" She shouted and the murmurings of her group came to an abrupt end. "You don't deserve this."
"I am sorry Aliya,"
"Nandini, don't go please," She whispered softly. "Don't go like this."
"I have to Aliya. I have to." I said and cut the call.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was sitting in the waiting area after the checking. It was still time for the plane to take off. The driver was quite interesting and he told me various quotes about life and all. He didn't take any extra tip unlike the other cabbies I have seen around. He even handed me his card telling me to call him anytime whenever I need any sort of advice. He might say it to everyone or was it just me?
I looked around trying not to catch any familiar pair of eyes when my eyes got locked with that of Mukti's.
Why was she here?
I wasn't really up for another humiliation from her so just stood up and started walking away when she ran and blocked my way.
"Mukti, I don't want to create a scene here. Please get aside." I said coldly watching the floor. The marbles were done nicely and they looked quite interesting at that moment.
"I am sorry," she said.
"Pardon?"
"I am sorry," she repeated. "I am sorry for everything. I shouldn't have said all that to you. You didn't deserve it."
I tried forcing a smile but failed miserably, "it's quite understandable Mukti. I know you were supporting your friend at that time."
"You mean everything's okay between us?" She asked. I thought I saw a smile on her face.
"It's alright," I smiled back if she did.
"Oh thank you Nandini!" She got hyper and hugged me tightly, making me lose my balance for a second.
Flight passengers of Boeing 747 of Air India from New York City to Delhi are requested to reach platform number 4 with their boarding passes.
"C'mon let's go!" Mukti squealed, grabbed my hand tightly and started walking towards the said platform.
"Mukti you are accompanying me," my question sounded more like a statement.
"Yep and I am going to live with you at your place. No if's no but's!"
A wow escaped from my mouth unexpectedly.
"I know what you are thinking Nandini. Can't we be friends? Pretty please?" She spoke with a puppy face.
I nodded and we both boarded the plane.
---------------
"Here I come and here I will stay!" Mukti spoke dramatically while coming out of the Airport.
I chuckled. "Pagal!"
"So, who's coming to pick us up?" She asked getting all casual with me. I still wasn't used to this side of her.
"My parents," I smiled at her, uncomfortably.
"I am very excited to see your pushtaini haveli. Aliya told me about it once." She spoke getting all giddy.
"It's nothing cool. Just an old house which needs some repair very bad," I said making our way towards the waiting area.
"I bet not!" She winked and I smiled. She wasn't that bad.
I saw my parents standing at a corner, facing our back. "There they are!" I exclaimed to Mukti.
We picked up our things and rushed towards them.
"Amma, baba," I shouted and they turned.
Mukti went into some state of shock while I hugged them. They didn't notice her standing by my side so I thought of introducing on my own.
"Uh, actually she is my friend Mukti; she'll stay with us for a while." My mother happily took her in her embrace while baba stared at her shockingly.
Baba and Mukti were staring at each other with shock written all over their bodies which confused me and Amma.
"Dad," she whispered turning the awkward silence into a dead one.
