CHAPTER 4

"FIRST DAY @OFFICE"

Same day, @Office

Manik went back to the office and started his work. The rest of the day he was very much busy in his works. He was so busy as Arpit was out of town, and he had to manage all the works all alone. It was already 9 and Anjali called him.

Manik: (in phone) Yes mom.

Anjali: Are you still in the office Manik?

Manik: Yeah mom. I'll be back soon, you don't wait for me. And did you have your dinner?

Anjali: Yes beta, I had. By the way Manik I called to inform you that your friends are here.

Manik: Oh... I totally forgot. We had planned for a meeting today at our place.

Anjali: Its ok Manik, they are waiting. Drive your car slow and come.

Manik: (obediently) Yeah ok mom.

Manik rushed to his house as he was also excited about meeting his friends after a long time. Cabir had been to Paris for the fashion show and Dhruliya went to Goa for a photoshoot. It was nearly a month since Fab5 was together. Manik reached there as soon as possible, and went straight to the garden where his friends were waiting. All were happy to see each other after a gap, they had a group hug.

Manik: So finally Fab5 is back together.

Mukti: So what are we waiting for? Let's celebrate! (Opening the bottle of champagne)

Manik: Guys excuse me for a moment.

Manik then went to his parents' bedroom and opened the door. Anjali was leaning on the bed and reading a book. She smiled looking at Manik.

Manik: (sitting next to her) Mom you dint sleep still? It's already 10.

Anjali: (smiles) How can I sleep without having a glimpse of my son?

Manik: So now that you have seen me, you can sleep. By the way mom did you have your diabetes tablets?

Anjali: Oh! I forgot, I'll have them now.

Manik opened the side table and took the tablets in his hands. Seeing the tablets he remembered Nandini and a smile appeared on his face.

Anjali: Manik, why are you smiling?

Manik: (handing Anjali the glass of water and tablets) Nothing mom. Just like that!

And Anjali had her tablets and lied on the bed.

Anjali: Manik I am feeling sleepy, I am going to sleep. You go and enjoy with your friends. And don't make much noise while you are partying, the servants are sleeping too.

Manik: (comforting her with a blanket) Ok mom we won't. Good night!

Manik switched off the lights and slowly closed the door and went back to the swimming pool where fab4 was waiting.

Cabir: Mamma's boy is back!

Manik gave a glare to him and hits him playfully.

Mukti: Come on yaar Cabir don't make fun of him. Atleast he is obedient to his parents unlike us.

Cabir: (laughs) That's true!

Mukti: (handing everyone a glass of champagne) No more talks. Let's party!

Aaliya: (raising the glass) So this for the reunion of Fab5, cheers.

Manik, Cabir, Mukti, Dhruv (in chorus): Cheers!

They took 3-4 more rounds and started to talk about all the happenings in the month, when they were not together.

Mukti: So Aaliya, how was your shoot?

Aaliya: It was awesome, Mukti!

Cabir: Well, I know that this "shoot" was just an excuse to go to Goa with Dhruv right?

Aaliya: (blushing) Shut up Cabir. It's nothing like that.

Manik: Bro, someone's blushing. Anyone noticed?

Manik, Cabir and Mukti laughed doing a hi-five.

Dhruv: Come on guys stop it. We had a shoot that's all.

Mukti: The way Aaliya blushed, says it all about your photo shoot.

Aaliya: Ok Ok. Jokes apart, seriously guys, Goa was just awesome. I think every couple should visit Goa atleast once. It is a perfect place for couples.

Hearing this Manik, Cabir and Mukti made a sad child-like face.

Mukti: You are lucky Aaliya, you have Dhruv with you. But see us, we are still single (Mukti said it by making a cute sad pout).

All four started to laugh seeing Mukti's antics. Then they spent the entire night chit-chatting and had a great time together as always.

The next day, @Nandini's Apartment

It was a new morning for Nandini. She got up early as she was very excited about her first day of work. She came out of her room and sneaked into the kitchen and found no one there. Everyone was asleep as it was only 5am. Nandini thought of making the breakfast and started the work. Meanwhile Navya came there hearing sounds from kitchen.

Nandini: Good morning Navya!

Navya: Good morning Nandu, and by the way what are you trying to do with your one hand??

Nandini: Nothing ya, I got up early, so thought of cooking something for you all.

Navya: (giving a glare to her) You can do all this later when your hand is alright, now be a good girl and go and sit over there.

Meanwhile Abi and Aryaman also came to the kitchen.

Abi: So what's going on pretty ladies?

Navya: Abi, you know what? Our chef Nandu was trying to make breakfast for us.

Aryaman: Nandu are you crazy? How will you cook in this condition? I know you cook well, maybe you do all this after you are completely fine.

Abi: Yes, we'll help Navya, you go and refresh yourself.

Nandini: Okay, as you say. And I should call Amms, I still did not inform her about my job.

Nandini sat on the sofa, called Amms and informed about her job. Amms was very happy for Nandini. She congratulated her. Nandini decided not to tell Amms about her fracture as she knew Amms will be worried for no reason. After the call, Nandini went to refresh. She found it little difficult to get ready with help of her single hand, but she managed. She wore a pink kurti top with white jeggings. She brushed her hair and put a light make up. She came out and found her friends waiting for her in the table. She joined them and all had their breakfast.

Nandini: So guys bye, I don't want to be late today.

Aryaman: Okay Nandu. Come I'll drop you in the office.

Nandini: It's okay Abi, I will go by myself.

Aryaman: Ooi hello! You want to break your another hand? Abi will drop you, and no more arguments, it's final.

Nandini: Ok Ok, fine.

Navya: Nandu wait, did you have your medicines?

Nandini: Sorry, I forgot.

Aryaman: I know, you will never remember to have your tablets.

Aryaman came with the tablets and water. He handed it to Nandini. Looking at the tablets Nandini remembered how Manik cutely convinced her to eat those and she smiled looking at the tablets.

Navya: Wow Nandu! From when did you started to smile seeing the tablets? You hate them na.

Nandini: Nothing. And yeah, I always hate tablets. (She made a cute angry pout)

Saying this, Nandini ate all the tablets. All the three were shocked because she never used to eat it without any drama, but didn't react as she would start her drama anytime.

Then Abi and Nandini left waving to Navya and Aryaman.

@The office:

Manik came to the office and found that Nandini didn't reach still. He was waiting in his cabin and was continuously starring at the entrance now and then, waiting for her arrival. After few minutes he heard a knock in the door. He knew it was Nandini and he was right. She came inside and gave a bright smile. He was just looking at her smiling face for few seconds and then,

Manik: On time. Good Ms.Murthy.

Nandini: Yeah, Nandini Murthy is never late.

Manik gave her a "What" look, raising his eyebrows.

Nandini: (stammers) That is except few emergency situations, I'll be never late, Sir.

Hearing "Sir" from her brought Manik to his consciousness and made him realize that it was office and he is her boss.

Manik: (gets up from his chair) So come, I will introduce you to your team members.

Nandini nodded her head and followed Manik. He led her to a big hall where there were about 10 people waiting for them. Manik stood in front of them with his hands inside his pockets and Nandini stood near him.

Manik: Good morning everyone! Well now I am proud to introduce you to your new team leader, (pointing his hand towards her) She is Nandini Murthy. She is going to work with us from now, as your team leader. Over to you Ms.Murthy...Nandini didn't expect that she would be asked to speak there, with a strange feeling she went in the front.

Nandini: Good Morning all!

Team Members: Morning Mam.

Nandini: Just call me Nandini. Because I think we should work as a group of friends rather than a team. I want all of you to accept me as a friend and not your leader, because working on something with a friend is more fun than working with a fellow employee. So I hope you all will follow this, thank you!

All the employees were happy about this because no team leader has approached them in the way Nandini approached them. All smiled gesturing that they liked her approach. On the other hand Manik was also mesmerized with her speech and felt proud of himself for choosing her as the team leader. Then Manik left the hall and everyone there introduced themselves to Nandini. All of them were happy to have Nandini as their team leader and so was Nandini. After sometime, a girl who is more or less than Nandini's age came inside and introduced herself.

Shreya: Hello! I am Shreya, assistant team leader (extending her hand)

Nandini: Hello Shreya! I am Nandini (they shook hands)

Then Shreya enquired about her hand and Nandini said about the accident. Both had a small conversation and Nandini somewhat felt more comfortable with her. Before they could get into an intense conversation the peon came in and informed Nandini that Manik wants to meet her in his cabin now.

Nandini: So, I have to leave now Shreya. We'll catch up later.

Shreya: Okay Nandini, promise me that we'll meet for the lunch.

Nandini: Yes promise.

Shreya hugged her and waved her bye. Nandini smiled seeing Shreya's friendly behavior. And then she went to Manik's cabin and knocked the door.

Nandini: May I come in sir?

Manik: Yes.

Nandini entered Manik's cabin and he gestured her to take a seat. Nandini sat in front of him.

Manik: So here is the project on which you and your team are going to work on.

He handed over some files to her. He explained her about the aim and concept of the project.

Manik: So any doubts Ms.Murthy?

Nandini: No sir, but...

Manik: You want to say something?

Nandini: Nandini, call me Nandini sir. It sounds good.

Manik was surprised at her statement, but he didn't oppose. He just nodded his head in agreement.

Manik: So Nandini, you can take it to your cabin and study it completely and start working on it from now.

Nandini: Yes sir. (She turned to leave)

Manik: And is your hand fine now? Is it still hurting? Are you taking your medicines on time? (Manik said it without a pause)

Nandini: Yes sir, I do. And it's not hurting much now.

Manik: Even though if it's not hurting much, take care.

Nandini (smiles): Yes sir, thank you.

Manik: And your cabin is in the left side, right next to mine.

Nandini nodded her head and turned to leave.

Manik: And if you have any doubts, you can ask me.

She again nodded her head and again turned to leave.

Manik: And your files? (He pointed his hand towards the files in the table)

Manik did not want Nandini to leave, he kept on asking and saying her something. He himself couldn't understand the reason for his behavior, but he was feeling happy and good when she was around him. It was very new for Manik, as he never felt the same with anyone else.

Then Nandini went towards the table and took all the files in one hand and she couldn't manage it. Manik saw her struggling and helped her. He went along with Nandini to her cabin and placed the files on her table. He pulled the chair and gestured Nandini to sit. Nandini was surprised to see him doing such things, but she didn't say anything. She just nodded her head and took the seat. He gave her a wide smile and left the cabin. She then sat with the files and started studying it. Nandini was continuously going through the files. After a couple of hours, it was the time for lunch. Shreya came to her cabin.

Nandini: Hi Shreya, You are here?

Shreya: Nandini, look at the time its 12:10. For God's sake do you remember that you promised me that we'll meet for lunch?

Nandini: Yeah I remember. Just wait a couple of minutes ya. I have few doubts, I'll clarify it with sir and come.

Shreya: Come na, you can clarify it after lunch. I am starving.

Nandini: Ok Ok. Come let's go. (She couldn't refuse after seeing Shreya's pity hungry face)

Nandini and Shreya were on the way to the canteen. They didn't shut their mouth even for a moment. They became so close within few hours. They looked like as if they were friends for years. They finally reached the canteen and ordered Vada Paav, as it was Shreya's favorite. Nandini also ordered the same. They took their plates and walked towards a table and sat there. When they were about to start their lunch, Nandini got a call.

Nandini: (receiving the call) Hello Amms.

Amms: Hello Nandu. So how is your day going, are you enjoying your work?

Nandini: Yes Amms, I am enjoying. And you know what, I have got a cute and sweet friend here.

Saying this, she saw Shreya and gave her a cute wink. She gestured Shreya to eat, but she said she will wait.

Amms: I know it Nandu, wherever you go, you make good friends over there. (After a pause) And Nandu, are you free now? I just wanted to inform something important to you.

Nandini: Yes Amms, I am free only, it's lunch break now.

Amms: Well Nandu, Aadi had come to Mumbai this morning. (Hearing Aadi's name, Nandini's face changed) He called me now and I gave him your new number. He told that he will call you. Speak to him well Nandu.

Nandini: But Amms...

Amms: Nandu, please for me, talk to him dear!

Nandini couldn't ignore her request, so she said that she will talk. Then she saw Shreya, who gave her a questioning look.
