CHAPTER 2

FACE-TO-FACE

It was a bright morning! The sun was peeping through the window and was falling directly on Nandini's face. The alarm rang. It was 6am. She couldn't open her eyes fully due to the brightness of the sunlight. She slowly got up and rubbed her eyes. She saw her parents' photo in the side table. She started to talk to them "Mama, Papa I really miss you both so much, but I know u both are seeing me from somewhere, Today is my big day and I want your blessings" Saying so, she hugged her parents' photo tightly. She then slowly got down from the bed and moved towards her washroom. She came out from the bathroom in a bathrobe, after having her bath. She was so much confused thinking about what to wear. She almost made a mess of her cupboard. Finally, she chose a white colour kurti top with a little embroidery work. She wore it with a dark blue pencil jean. She combed her hair and left it free. She applied kohl to her eyes and her favorite strawberry lip gloss to her lips. She looked simple yet beautiful. She was about to get out of her room, but her phone rang. It was her amms. She took the phone happily,

Nandini: Hello amms!!! Good morning.

Amms: Good morning Nandu. Are you ready for your interview?

Nandini (excitedly): Yes, ofcourse amms. I am ready.

Then amms, chacha and chachi wish her luck and hung up. Then she came out of her room. Navya and Abi were ready for their work.

Nandini: Good morning!

Navya: Good morning Nandu. What's special? You are looking beautiful today.

Nandini: Nothing like that Navya. I am looking normal only na.

Abi: Good morning beautiful ladies!

Aryaman: (comes rubbing his eyes) Good morning everyone.

Nandini: Aroo... Why aren't you ready still? Don't you have office today?

Aryaman: Office is at 9 only na, still there is time. Relax Nandu!

Nandini was about to leave, when Abi asked her to wait and went inside a room. He came out with a small box wrapped in a gift paper. All the three looked at each other and smiled. They handed over the box to Nandini.

Nandini: What is it guys?

All the three in chorus "Open it Nandu". She opens it and finds a beautiful watch. She was really moved by their love towards her. She almost had tear in her eyes. She hugged all the three simultaneously and shouted "I love you all so much". All three hugged her back. It was a beautiful moment between the friends to watch.

Abi: Okay. We will continue all this in the evening, now I am late, I had to leave. Nandu, come I will drop you.

Nandini: No Abi, you carry on. My interview is at 10 only. I will go to the nearby temple and then I will go by myself.

Abi: Fine. Be careful Nandu. Call me if you need something. Take care. And all the best!

Nandini: Your breakfast?

Abi: I will have it in the canteen. Bye everyone.

After Abi left, all the three sat and had their breakfast together. Navya and Aryaman left for their office wishing Nandini good luck and Nandini to the temple. After praying to God sincerely, Nandini came out from the temple and was waiting for a taxi. Suddenly she noticed a small puppy in the middle of the road and also an Audi car heading towards it in full speed. Nandini couldn't control herself and ran towards the puppy. She held the puppy close to her chest and sat on the road closing her eyes tightly in fear. The car was in a full speed and was so close to Nandini and she couldn't balance herself and fell leftwards which caused a severe pain in her hand. The car stopped suddenly with a jerk. When she was trying to get up, she noticed a tall and handsome guy getting out of the car and closing the door with full anger. It was Manik. He notices the puppy in her hand.

Manik: Have you lost it? I mean, how could you risk your life for this small creature?

Nandini: What if it is a small creature? It is also a life na.

Manik couldn't speak anything. He was totally moved by her. A girl risking her own life for a dog isn't a small thing for Manik. His thought was interrupted by Nandini's shout.

Nandini: (Trying to get up) Ouch! My hand, it's paining.

Manik: Are you ok? Give me your hand.

She took his hand and got up. She left the puppy aside in a safe place and came to Manik. He was looking at her without blinking his eyes. She went in front of the car to take her file and wallet. She bent down to take it, but she couldn't as there was severe pain in her hand. Noticing this Manik came and helped her.

Manik: Are you okay? Your hand is swelling. Come let's go to the hospital.

Nandini couldn't bear her pain and nodded her head in agreement. They both headed towards the car and sat. Nandini tried to wear her seat belt, but she was unable to do it with one hand. Manik came close to Nandini and put her seatbelt. They had an eyelock there. But Nandini suddenly smelt the smell of alcohol from his shirt.

Nandini (shockingly): Are you drunk?

Manik: Arrey, no tha... (He was interrupted by her)

Nandini: Like seriously? Early in the morning you drink? I mean you don't look like that kind of a person, but u drink and drive. It's against rules na. Don't you have brains? It's irritating to see such people.

She feels irritated and was about to get down from the car. Manik holds her hand and looks at her angrily.

Manik: You are not going anywhere, until your hand gets treated.

Nandini: Who the hell are you to stop me? Leave me.

Manik keeps holding her hand and started to drive. He leaves her hand after sometime. She gets angry and turns towards the window.

Nandini: (murmuring to herself, but she was loud enough that Manik could hear her). What kind of people are living here, drinking and driving. If he has money he can do anything ah. Why can't this traffic police catch such people and seize their license? They all should be throwed behind bars.

Manik just couldn't control his smile seeing Nandini's cuteness. He was just enjoying it. They reached the hospital. Manik came and opened door for her.

Nandini: Seriously? You think that I will come with you. Just leave.

Manik: Why not?

He didn't give time to her to speak more and took her in his arms. He took her into the hospital. Everyone there was wishing him "Good morning sir".

Nandini was confused. Manik entered into doctor's room and made Nandini sit in the chair. He explained to the doctor about the swelling in her hand. Doctor started examining Nandini.

Doctor: (To Manik) well the worker is fine now. He had lost a lot of blood, but he is fine now.

Manik: Thank you doctor. I was really worried for him.

Doctor (continued examining Nandini): I don't understand what was wrong with him. These drunkard people, Thank God, you called the ambulance and sent him here. Otherwise it could have been difficult.

Nandini who was listening to their conversation couldn't understand anything clearly. Then suddenly she noticed blood stains in the back of Manik's shirt. Now Nandini understood everything. Manik was actually helping the worker to get him into the ambulance and this was the reason he was smelling alcoholic.

Nandini's P.O.V:

Aiyo aiyappa! What have I done. I shouldn't have scolded him. I have mistaken such a person who did this much to save a worker. Now how will I apologize?

Doctor: (After examining Nandini) Well, she got a minute fracture in her hand. Nothing serious. Plaster for a week, she'll be completely fine. Now I will give her a pain killer and then I will put a plaster. Just a moment, I'll be back with the pain killer.

The doctor left. Nandini was confused how to apologize. She didn't have the courage even to look at him. She looked at him and gave a fake smile. Manik understood what she was going through and smiled silently.

Nandini: Actually, I thought... (She couldn't complete her sentence as she was totally embarrassed)

Manik: Do you want to apologize?

Nandini: Yeah, that is the thing. I am sorry, I am really sorry. Actually, I totally misunderstood you... I ...

Manik kept his finger in her lips and said "sshhh". They looked into each other eyes for some time.

Manik (smiled): It's ok. Apology accepted.

They both smiled at each other. And the doctor came back with an injection.

Doctor: So my dear young lady, here is your pain-killer.

Nandini (shouted in shock): What? An injection, no way. I don't need any pain-killer, atleast not an injection. Please doctor, please.

She made a cute child-like face. Manik smiled at Nandini's childish tantrums and gestures the doctor to continue and he will take care. Manik knelt down by his knees, so that he could match Nandini's height. He took her another hand in his and slowly tucked her hair behind her ears.

Manik: If you don't want injection, then it's ok. I can't see you in pain because...

Nandini: Because... ???

Nandini: (The doctor injects the injection). Ouch !!!

Manik and doctor give a high-fi to each other and smile seeing Nandini. She makes a cute angry pout.

Doctor: (To Manik) Can you please go and get these medicines, meanwhile I will complete her dressing.

After Manik left, Nandini: By the way doctor why all the staffs over here wish him? Do you all know him?

Doctor: Yes dear. He has given a lot of charity to this hospital. He is a very kind hearted man you know.

Manik came back after getting medicines and Nandini's dressing was almost done. They both thanked doctor and left. They reached the parking lot. Manik opened the car door for her.

Manik: So, tell me where you want to go? I will drop you.

Nandini: No, I am fine. I will go by myself.

Manik: Are you sure?

Nandini: Yeah yeah... I am very sure.

He handed over the medicines to her, he took her wallet and file from his car and gave it her.

Manik: And I am sorry too for this (pointing her hand).

Nandini: Its ok too.. Apology accepted. (Manik smiled seeing her repeating his line)

Manik: By the way, nice meeting you Ms. ???

Nandini: Oh! Sorry... I am Nandini, Nandini Murthy.

Manik: Nice to meet you Nandini! (They shook their hands)

Before Manik could introduce himself, he was interrupted by a phone call.

Manik: (in phone) Yes, Mr.Khurana, I know I am late. Ok, I will be there in 15 minutes.

Manik: Sorry, I am getting late, I had to leave.

Nandini: Yes, you carry on. Bye

Manik: Bye, see you soon.

After biding bye to each other, Manik left in his car. Nandini was seeing his car till it went out of her sight. Smiling to herself, she left the place. She was walking and saw her watch and she was hell shocked. She shouted, "OMG! My interview"
