Death comes calling

It came slowly at first, in the middle of the night, as she lay in bed.

It wrapped itself around her, a seemingly benign and affable feeling, as if the world had opened its arms to her, that moment of sereness, of an unspeakable joy.

She remembered the green fields of her childhood, of eating sugarcane and mangoes in the hot summer sun as she lay in the cold apartment loft in the city.

She wanted to embrace it, like it was a long-lost lover, she had seen it coming so many times and yet she had never embraced it, but now it came with a fury and passion of a lover long denied, calling to her, asking for her, speaking to her.

And just like that, it had stopped, as she lay vacuously, looking upto the ceiling, the knife on the floor in a puddle of crimson red.
