Chapter 4

Aliya loved being the center of attention. Everywhere. Anywhere.

And right now, although she knew she was cheating on Manik, she still liked it.

Manik had never really made any efforts to be with her, he had never bothered to ever check on her when she needed him, he had never given her any gifts in the last two years that they'd been dating.

She could go all night long with the list she had on Manik, it just dint seem fair to her that she be punished for his disinterest in her. If he had such a huge commitment problem, why bother ruining this experience for both of them?

And with that thought in mind, she smiled fondly at Paarth who was busy listening to music on his iPod.

Paarth had been a good friend to her since she had been eight. They had always had something of a special bond. But since she had started dating Manik, Paarth had for a while seemed distant and quiet. She knew Paarth dint approve of Manik, and for a whole year Aliya had deluded herself to think that the reason for Paarth's coldness was his disapproval for Manik. But that was not it.

Paarth had made that quiet obvious.

The slow changes in their relation had started to appear when one day Mukti had asked Paarth out, no warnings given. She had just one day randomly gone upto Paarth when Paarth was listening to music and blabbered it out.

It was painful, not just for Mukti but for Aliya as well, because although Paarth had rejected Mukti with kind words, he had also looked at Aliya when Mukti had asked him why he dint think this relationship was possible with a longing so strong in his eyes, it was enough of a sign for Aliya as to what Paarth had on his mind.

Through the next year, Aliya's relation with Manik became even more feeble and meaningless. Manik's inattentiveness to her and Paarth's constant attention had slowly uprooted Manik out of her heart and replaced him with Paarth.

"What are you thinking?" Paarth nudged her slightly with his arm, a sly grin on his face as he offered her an earphone. She took it without asking any questions. He had an excellent taste in music, unlike Manik.

"Nothing. Just wondering what school would've been like without you." Aliya smiled as Paarth played their song, she will be loved. He always told her, it reminded him of their relationship. She adored it.

A few seconds into the song, and Aliya found herself singing the song alongside Paarth as they listened to it. His voice was so beautiful, it made her want to kiss him when he lost himself so passionately while singing something that she found was so close to her heart. She pulled his cheeks cutely as he smiled and kissed her on her nose.

Aliya knew it would have turned into more than just a kiss on the nose if it hadn't been for the fact that Mukti was sitting right behind them. And although, Mukti knew how Aliya and Paarth felt about each other now, it still wasn't easy for her to hang around them on a daily basis as they cuddled and acted like a couple.

Before Aliya knew what was happening, Paarth was getting off the seat, putting on his bag ready to get off the bus on his bus stop which was next. On an impulse Aliya got up, put on her bag and turned to him not wanting to let go of him so quickly, he smiled a little too fondly as he let her lead the way out of the bus, a few meters away from his society.

Nandini vaguely remembered pushing Manik aside, as she ran to get off the bus, of course tripping on two bags and falling down near the front of the bus alongside was not much of a surprise. Quickly steadying herself again as the bus came to a halt near the park which was a few kilometers from her house, she rushed out of the bus, half jogged, half ran to the rickshaw which was standing a few meters away.

With a sense of relief, she got into the rickshaw only to be pushed into the corner as another person got in behind her, and before she could utter a word of protest the rickshaw had started moving.

"TUM?" Nandini screamed as she stared at the ugly spikes, the annoying grin and the cheap, perverted personality in front of her.

"Yes Nandu. This is a dream come true for me too." Manik retorted with a smirk. "Nothing turns me on more than your unibrow."

"Tumhe uss bus se utarne ko kisne bola? Can't you leave me alone!"

"But Nandu, what are you saying ya! How would I have missed an opportunity to have a one to one conversation with the most annoying and nagging personality ever."

"Bahar niklo. Abhi bahar niklo" Nandini was so angry that she found herself pushing Manik out of the rickshaw, if a random vehicle came and beheaded him by mistake, it would be a beautiful red cherry on the top.

"Nandu. I know you love me and cant keep your hands off me, but I have a girlfriend-"

"Chee. Tumhe lagta hai ki main tumhe pasand karti hu? Sapne mat dekho"

"Good. I wouldn't want to date a girl who has more moustache than me you know."

Nandini stared at him in anger for five minutes and then turned away from him, pretending to look out the window.

"Kyun nandu? Hawa nikal gayi teri? And here I thought you were a fighter yaar. Shee" Manik faked a sigh trying to get a reaction out of her.

When she still dint respond, he shifted slightly towards her, in an attempt to annoy her. It worked. She gave him an annoyed, sidelong glance before she turned back to the view outside filled with smoke and ugly cars.

Manik frowned and shifted a little more towards her, practically shoving her into the left side of the rickshaw.

This time Nandini dint even bother giving him a second glance.

Manik noticing her lack of response, did what he did normally to girls to annoy them. His usual put your arm around the girl and then pull on their braid as they screamed at him in shock.

It gave him immense pleasure to watch as the girls caught themselves unawares, attracted to the stupid boy in front of them, only to find that it was just a stupid prank.

The putting his arm around her part was not tough, she wasn't even looking at him. But did she really miss the hand that was sticking out on the other side of her shoulder waiting to be noticed, just centimeters away from her face?

No reaction still? Really?

"Please stop it Manik"

"Then stop ignoring me."

Obediently Nandini turned to face him, and to his surprise, her eyes were red and her cheeks were wet.

"Nandini, did something go into your eye?" Manik stared in confusion at the girl in front of him.

"Manik, do you think I'm ugly?" There was a strange note in her voice as she spoke to him, an ill disguised curiosity in her voice.

"Don't worry. That's only to the naked eye. " Manik laughed at his own joke for a minute before he realized that she was again looking outside. "Just so you know, you were supposed to laugh."

"Well it wasn't funny."

"What do you want? An apology? Because you aren't getting one of those from me"

"I don't expect someone like you to apologize to someone like me. I get that. But don't you ever treat me like I'm anything less than anyone else. You of all the people. I'm a much better person than you will ever be. You are just a cheap shit who thinks insulting people using words and actions is fun. Other people's feelings? What feelings? If Manik is in a bad mood, everybody stray away. But if someone else had a bad day, well let's go ruin their day a bit more. And why did I expect anything better from you! You're Aliya's boy friend right? She's a complete pain and she's trained you well, you're just as much a pest as she is." Nandini spoke with such quietness and coldness in her voice that it surprised Manik. "Now, please get out. You're the last person I want to see right now. Don't bother me."

The coldness in her voice bothered Manik so much that a minute later he found himself standing near the bridge next to his society staring at the rickshaw where that ugly unibrow girl sat, wondering if maybe, just maybe he had just crossed a line.
