This is amazing. I can't even get over how much I like feisty Nandu.
Chapter 6
"I just don't understand Manik. How are all the hot girls in the other class?" Cabir moaned like a baby for the hundredth time that day. "Okay. I know I sound like Nandini right now, all grumpy and shit. But dude, so unfair man." Cabir gave an exaggerated head desk motion to get Manik's attention before he flew out of the class ready for some action, or as Manik described it, for some embarrassment.
This was a usual pursuit for Cabir. He would climb up the stairs with Manik, follow him into their class, sit with him for five minutes where in all he did was groan and moan and throw things around until the moment when he gathered up the courage to go get some "action". As per the set routine, after ten minutes he would come back in saying "not worth it. Girls are too annoying."
Manik looked at his watch.
9:09 AM.
At 09:17 AM, an unusually early Cabir rushed back into the classroom towards Manik. Manik waited with a gleeful sly smirk for Cabir to now blame all the girls for his ravenous personality as he always did. But the next words that left Cabir's mouth surprised him "Did you know, our punch machine is upstairs with the headmistress right now?"
"I thought Nandini wasn't coming to school today." Manik felt a frown crease his eyebrow as he wondered why she was with the headmistress.
"Why do you think she's here? To complain about Harshad dude. Aaj subah ke incident ke baare me!" Cabir said, his voice filled with a new kind of emotion. It was obvious that Cabir was worried about whether any of their names would come up in the conversation that Nandini was going to have with the headmistress.
"Let's go check?" Manik suggested what he knew was going on in Cabir's mind.
More than willingly, Cabir lead the way out of the class to the top floor of the building where the headmistress sat.
As Manik walked by his girlfriend, Aliya's class on the way up, Manik, through the corner of his eye, noticed something peculiar.
He turned his head by just about thirty or so degrees to make sure he wasnt hallucinating.
Near the teachers table, in his girl friend's class, was his girlfriend in her so called best friend's arms as he kissed her on the nose and tickled her while she laughed like she had just seen a clown.
Well, that was a surprise, Manik thought to himself as he crossed the classroom with nothing but one overpowering feeling spreading through his veins, relief.
Relief that he would no longer have to put up with the annoying bitching nature of Aliya, relief that he wouldn't have to walk her back and forth from her class to the bus stand while she blabbered on and on like an annoying donkey, relief that he could wear clothes as dirty as he wanted with no one to pinch him and tell him off, but most of all, relief that he was now free to hit on that new admission who had joined school just last week as his junior.
With that exhilarated feeling inside, he jogged on to catch up with Cabir who was now in the line of sight of Nandini, who was currently staring at them both. If looks could kill, they would have both died right there.
"Aaj subah ki warning kaafi nahi thi tum logo ke liye?" Nandini was now on her feet.
"Nandini, listen. We had nothing to do with what happened today in the morning. That was Harshad through and through." Cabir said in an attempt to dissuade her from complaining about them.
"What is that, a cheap shit way of saying I'm sorry?"
"Nandini, look, we really had nothing to do with it. We are not trying to shift the blame here." Cabir tried again.
"Whatever. Go bore someone else." Nandini turned her back to the two of them.
"Listen, if you complain about us to the headmistress, quoting someone I know, there will be repercussions." Manik spoke this time, a threat unceremoniously disguised in his voice.
"Stop imagining things and just to be sure, pay a little more attention in geography because I don't know if you've noticed but surprise surprise, the world doesnt revolve around you" This guy had no limits. How dumb could someone get!
"In which case, Ms Nandini Murthy, what are you doing outside the head mistress' office?" Manik wasn't very good at hiding his curiosity.
"How is that any of your business? Why don't you go do something productive like maybe go lick your girl friend's feet?"
"At least I don't have sexual encounters with lizards Nandu. And that is saying something." This was turning into a fully fledged fight.
"Don't talk about my Lily with that cheap mouth of yours which I'm sure has just been in close contact with that ugly pig head girl girlfriend of yours' mouth."
"Listen, I don't have all day to talk to you, I'm sure nobody is that jobless Nandu. So stop messing with me and tell me what you're doing here." Manik glared at Nandini, his anger once again at a high note.
"Well if you must know, your ugly girlfriend got me suspended by lying like a cheap pig that she is"
"Agreed on all accounts on that description. But how did she get you suspended?" Manik asked aware of Cabir's eyes on him as he foul mouthed Aliya.
"Please! Don't pretend like you don't know. You're such a skank just like your girlfriend"
"Listen Nandini" Manik felt his anger rising inside him slowly "If I knew, I wouldn't be wasting my time over here with you. So a little free advice, start talking."
Nandini stared at him contemplating, was he telling the truth, did he really not know? And if he was telling the truth, would it be worth telling him? All he would do would be use this information against her as well like he always did. But then, another thought struck her. Was she afraid of him and his cheap antics? NO. HELL NO. He had no power over her what so ever. There was nothing to lose.
Then she considered his last words. He had just foul mouthed his own girl friend and agreed with her on the vivid description she had placed in front of him.
In a vague, unreal, distant parallel universe, she wondered, if he might actually be on her side.
"Well, if you must know. Your girlfriend-"
"She has a name."
"Fine. Aliya went to the headmistress and told her that I am a lunatic because I took Lily and put her down Mukti's shirt, which is a downright lie."
"Just for clarification, which part is the downright lie? Lunatic or lizard down Mukti's shirt?"
"Both!" Nandini screamed.
"Relax. Just checking. Listen, do you want me to speak to her?" Manik asked, as he pointed with his eyes towards the headmistress' name plaque.
"Are you serious? I have been trying to convince her since yesterday, what makes you think you can just waltz in there and sort this mess out?" Nandini was outraged at his audacity.
This time Cabir interjected, "Well I dont know Nandini. Maybe because the headmistress, Nyonika Malhotra is Manik's mom?" Cabir smirked as he watched the expression on Nandini's face change from outrage to shock to an appalling hair pulling exercise after which Nandini turned back to Manik.
"Will you talk to her?" She asked, for the first time a note of politeness in her voice.
"Only because you asked nicely" said Manik as he grinned at her before he knocked on the door that lead to the headmistress' office twice in a continous order. There was a warm 'come in Manik' call out from inside at which point, Manik disappeared through the door.

Nandini was the first to get into the bus that day.
She had been sitting in the bus for nearly an entire hour when the first sign of life came into her line of sight.
Manik and Dhruv had just boarded the bus followed by Cabir who was busy stuffing his mouth with chole and bhature.
Nandini stared anxiously at Manik. Her mind kindled with a single chain of thought, how do I go thank him for his help today without pissing him off like I usually do?
Will he be rude and offensive as he always was or would he just be sweet and say that's cool?
But her worries were baseless because a minute after the three boys had settled down on the back benches, Nandini heard Manik call out to her.
She turned around unsure of what to expect.
Manik gave her a sly grin before he said "idhar aa" while patting the empty seat beside him.
Nandini had just started to walk towards him when she heard another voice.
"Bag leke aa" This time it was Cabir.
Still unsure, Nandini grabbed her bag and again started her slow and dispirited walk towards them.
Manik was sitting on the top part of the seat of the guy who sat in front of him, facing Cabir, his back towards Nandini as she approached.
Dhruv on the other hand was sitting beside Cabir on the window seat, his earphones plugged in, his eyes mostly unfocused.
"Nandu do you want to play UNO?" Manik asked Nandini as she settled herself beside Manik.
Nandini stared at him suspiciously. Something was definitely fishy.
"What's the catch?" Nandini felt an overwhelming feeling of dread climbing one vertebrae at a time up her spinal cord.
"Beg your pardon?" Pretentious. So pretentious, Manik.
"First you helped me out of my suspension. Then you let me sit here with you. And now you're willing to play UNO with me. What am I missing?"
Nandini glared at Manik and then at Cabir as she saw them trying to communicate with their eyes, Manik trying to persuade Cabir to agree with something and Cabir relentlessly disagreeing.
After a minute of absolutely awkward, maybe even gay, eye signals as per Nandini's observations, Cabir let out a resigned sigh and Manik turned back to Nandini.
"We have a specific target in mind today. I think you can be of help."
"Who is it?" Nandini asked, her eyes narrowed to a slit.
Manik and Cabir exchanged a smirk as Cabir voiced the target's name.
"Harshad."
