i think handling it sensitvely also kind of refers to not making them butt of all jokes as done in a lot of Bollywood movies but to show them as regular people with same feelings, emotions and desires as all of us. They don't want to be treated special, they just wanted to be treated like normal people, without being stereotyped.

Him checking out girls serves as a smokescreen so that no one doubts his sexuality. Infact it happens quite a bit in real life, there are gay men who marry or have girlfriends to present as a front to the world(they are called beards)
