Chapter One
His hand lifted her bare back off of the bed as they both inched to position their bodies on the length of the bed. Manik's breathing became heavier as he allowed his weight to rest on Nandini, never once removing his lips from hers. Their kiss deepened, Nandini suddenly felt the need to come up for air.
"GOOD MORNING TORONTO. It is currently 6:45, and you're listening to W103.5."
Nandini awoke with a start as her alarm went off.
Shit. She thought. She was running late. Jumping off her bed, she grabbed her towel off the back of her desk chair, and ran to the bathroom.
That dream felt too real she thought. Manik's hands. His lips. His breath. His every touch. Too real, almost as if she was there, reliving the moment, just as it had happened, six years prior.
No she thought, she was not allowing herself to go there. The last time they were together in that way, heck, the last time Nandini as much as even saw Manik, was nearing five years. There was no way she was going to let those memories, those thoughts, and those desires, creep back into her. She was well beyond that. They were well beyond that. Her, possibly more than Manik.
Catching a quick glimpse at the wall clock above her sink, Nandini realized she was going to be more than just a little late.
Thanks Manik. Screwing things up, even when you're years and miles away. She thought to herself. Coming back to present time, Nandini quickly undressed and hopped into the shower. A cold shower was all she needed to get her on her way to a fresh start to a new day. Or so Nandini fooled herself into thinking each time she woke up with Manik haunting her thoughts. It never worked. It probably never would. Deep down on the inside, Nandini knew that too. However, she liked to hope there was something she could do to change that.
Nandini was breathless by the time she sat down onto her office chair. Spinning the chair to face the floor to ceiling window behind her, Nandini admired the view before her. The sun had not too long risen, and she could see the entire city was already filled with the hustle and bustle of a metropolis that it was. Fixating her eyes on the C.N. Tower, Nandini's thoughts took her to a time when Manik had promised to show her the entire world from atop that building. Looking back at that now, Nandini felt proud that she was able have that very building as her view on the daily, something which she had accomplished all on her own.
"Hey Naan-deeni! Helllo where are you?" Stephanie said behind Nandini, snapping her out of her thoughts.
Nandini was so lost in her memories, that she had not even noticed her assistant Stephanie had entered her office.
Gosh. Nandini thought. She would never get used to how some people continued to pronounce her name, despite her repeated attempts at teaching them how to get it right.
"Sorry. Yes, Stephanie, tell me." Nandini finally replied.
"Okay, so I'm just giving you a briefing on what we're going to be doing for the next week. Seems like upper management is trying to branch out on our diversity. We're signing a new artist, he's from India! You might know him Nands!"
"Steph...India is a big country. I don't know everybody who's from India." Nandini said, slight annoyed with her assistant's overgeneralization of her country.
"Ohhh...that's too bad! I hear he's a real hottie! Some...Man-eek Mal-hotra."
Nandini felt the breath being knocked out of her, as she heard that name out loud for the first time in years. Contrary to what she just told Stephanie, this was one Indian, that Nandini knew oh too well.
As if in a daze, Nandini frantically dug through her purse for her phone.
"Nandini, are you with me?" Stephanie asked, noticing her boss's distracted actions.
Not paying heed to anything that Stephanie was saying, Nandini opened her text message list to the name of the last person she texted before falling asleep last night.
Dhruv.
I need you. Urgent.
Within seconds came a reply.
Be there in five.
