The scene is Josh's party and continues to be so till the last frame.
Josh is working to understand the AK&KS dynamics. His first search
is with Prithvi. Josh tries the idea on Prithvi that behind all of KS'
obvious dislike and allergic reaction to AK is deep love. Prithvi dismisses
the idea to the point of being rude to Josh. Although Prithvi, being
Prithvi, is too well bought up to do anything more than being VERY
emphatic. But the emphasis does strike a chord in Josh's being -- it
is obvious that Prithvi does NOT like AK.
His next attempt is to play "spin the bottle". Of our characters, the
bottle points to Alliyah, Prithvi, AK, KS - in that order. Alliyah answers
that the hottest guy in the room is AK; Prithvi has a long spiel on love
winning perpetually over money in a quest for a better life, looking at
KS all the while; AK defends love as the only thing worth pursuing,
looking at KS all the while and getting daggers from Prithvi in response;
KS falters when she replies to Josh's question about whether she has
ever been in love, but says that she _has_ never been in love. However,
she has to excuse herself from the game at this conjecture.
In a surprising move, she is followed by AK. The boy is beginning to
disturb me - it's as if he is really tired of badgering KS, like his soul is
weary of the quest to get absolution from his past sins of having
doubted her by constantly taunting her so that she will fight. And it
is oh-so-difficult seeing AK being weary. He's been such a spunky
fighter all along, whether it was fighting his first attraction to KS and
the idea of an all-encompassing love, or fighting his mom when he
was seeing KS on the sly, or fighting himself and his soul by being
destructive to KS when he thought she had betrayed his love, or
fighting for her victory after he was convinced that she could never
love him again. It's miserable feeling his lack of energy to fight any
longer.
Prithvi tries to follow the two of them, but Josh keeps him at the game
by appealing to his better upbringing.
KS is getting a breath of fresh air when AK comes up behind her, and
tries to congratulate her on her show. KS is scathing at his apparent
change of heart. In all fairness to the child, I do think that I would be
sceptical of AK's good wishes at this point. He who was horrible all along,
wishing her happiness??!! I could see "What's with the guy?? Why is
he such a pathalogical liar??!" running all over her face.
And no matter how hard AK tries, she is dismissive. She is joined by
a very hostile Prithvi who takes her away, while a mute AK watches,
completely silent, completely helpless, completely held prisoner by the
awareness of his earlier mistakes and his desire for whatever's best
for KS. He returns to what he does best when he is confused and
miserable -- he drinks himself to a stupor.
At a point much later in time at the party, he is sloshed enough to be
pouring half the drink outside his glass. Josh sees this as do KS&Prithvi.
KS is distressed, Prithvi is disgusted. Josh tries to talk to his buddy to
relax, but you can just see that AK's brain has left his body a long time
ago. Prithvi leaves to get the car, poor drunk boy tries to head towards
KS, but she leaves. Josh persuades AK to spend the night.
Early the next morning, KS is sitting before untouched breakfast much
to Prithvi's distress. He accuses her of still being prey to AK. After a first
weak attempt to dissuade him, she admits that AK is still the driving
force behind everything that she does. The one point that rankles her
is that her show is still only a success due to Josh being there. Her
ambition in life is to be such a star that she can swing a successful
show all by herself, without anyone's assistance, and she will throw
that in AK's face.
In the meantime, AK drags his now-connected brain-and-body into
Josh's living room, where breakfast is being consumed. There's a sweet
part where Josh (for the first time with some expression on his face
that matched the context) recalls their childhood days, their start into
music and shows and success and being there for each other (what I
loved here was the way that AK's face moved from hangover distress
to smiles from good memories -- Mr. Khan is such a natural performer,
it's a pleasure to watch him even when he's not his gorgeous unshaven
self). After softening up AK with memories, Josh asks him why he is
miserable. AK's face falls (oh so very naturally!) and tries to put it
aside. In a nicely written move, Josh looks at him, shrugs and says
"ok" with an air of you're-my-coolest-friend-and-I-can-wait-till-you're-
ready-to-tell-me-what-happened and starts to walk away. And AK
stands and says "Josh". Josh is facing us, and he smiles. Very sweet.
Josh hears AK's story, and understands his dilemma. However, he is
insistent that KS still loves AK and deserves to be told the truth, and
for her to give a fair reaction to the situation after being told the truth.
He guesses, and I think correctly so, that if she should find out the
truth much later when it's too late to change things, that she will be
shattered. It takes a while, but he convinces AK that he ought to try.
AK is unconvinced that she will ever give him a hearing, but he is
willing to let Josh try.
Josh is sweet -- cons KS into a meeting with him at his hotel room.
But KS is bringing Prithvi! He cons Prithvi into going for another
meeting ingeniously, and is thrilled that he is going to get AK a
chance to meet with KS. AK is NOT that thrilled at all -- in fact,
he looks terribly apprehensive. If he had been a lesser person, he'd
be scared to death.
And here endeth the episode.
The spoiler for the next week stopped my heart: KS is being completely
dismissive of every giving AK a chance to talk about the real story, and
AK can't get a word in. She turns to leave and! AK grabs her hand!
It's movie/serial magic when two characters touch and look on screen
and your heart melts into your stomach...
