Mohammad Iqbal Khan, better known as Angad, in Sony's Kaisa Ye Pyaar Hai,
is the current heartthrob on TV. Just about every teeny bopper is fida over him. We unravel the real man behind the Angad persona.

You've come from nowhere, and today you are a rage. Tell us about yourself.
I was born and brought up in Kashmir. My dad is a retired government servant and my mom is a homemaker. I studied in a boarding school in Shimla and was in my third year of college in Delhi pursuing English (Hons) when I dropped out to try my luck in showbiz.

Your first brush with acting?
I did a couple of music videos including one with Rakesh Bapat and Raima Sen and another one for Falguni Pathak with Sneha Chabbria, my real life girlfriend. I then dabbled a bit in film production when I got my first film Fun2ssh. I also did another movie
called Bullet that was shot in Bulgaria.

It was after Bullet that I got a call from Sony asking me to work with Balaji Telefilms for a new show called Kaisa Ye Pyaar Hai where I had to play the lead role of a rock star.
Being an Ekta show, on Sony prime time, it was a big opportunity. There were no auditions as such but Ekta wanted to see me on tape. She had this whole idea of Angad having long hair and coloured lenses but that didn't happen!

How is Iqbal, the person?
Not showy or loud, I think I'm just a normal person. I'm the complete opposite of Angad in real life. I don't wear all those flashy earrings and lockets. I'm a very simple 'jeans and shirt' guy.

If KYPH wouldn't have happened where do you think you would be? Did you have any other profession in mind?
I would still be looking for the right break in films. Frankly speaking, I've stopped making plans, as I had never planned to work in TV either. But I would surely be somewhere in the glamour world. I can't think of any other profession. In fact I even dropped out of college for this industry!

You have so many fans now. Which is your craziest fan memory?
My fans are mostly young girls, kids and homely aunties (laughs), who watch my show. I remember one 50-year-old lady from Punjab who used to call me and message me. She would say my face reminded her of her boyfriend in college! She would actually keep track of where I was at any given time. If I would be in my make-up van while shooting, she would call and say "I know you are in Madh Island in your van." It really spooked me!

How were you as a kid?
Not naughty, but I was bad kid. I used to scream and shout and trouble everyone. In fact, a point had come where the neighbours would say 'It's ok, it's only Iqbal." I was really bad. (laughs)

Would you go back to films now if you get good offers?
As I've said, I don't make plans anymore. I'm not going to leave Angad so easily! But yes, if I get a good offer then I'll tell the producer that I'll be able to give him seven days in a month.

You had shot Falguni Pathak's music video in Hyderabad. Any special memories of the city?
I can never forget the biryani. I think we had eaten at Shadaab and I had really enjoyed it. I used to roam around the market. Hyderabad is a nice city, very lively and colourful.

A Quick Take on Tuhinaa Vohra

We hardly see you in 'Kyunki Saas Bhi...'!
My character, Prajakta, is actually fading out. I've nothing much to do now except pose for family pictures or do a few family scenes. My husband and mother-in-law have walked out of the show and they can't write a separate track for me. I was the Maharashtrian bahu of Ketaki Dave and Husain's wife. It was to be the main comedy track of the show but somehow it never took off after the jump. It's almost two years now and nothing really is happening to my character. It will be fun if Ketaki comes back to the show. I'm too attached to the show and would love to continue being a part of it.

Have you always been with the show?
Yeah, right from the beginning. I feel I've grown with it. I started by playing a college girl. Husain and me meet in college, fall in love and get married. Even the kids have grown. They are almost 14 now. So if there's another jump, I'll be playing grandmother.

How did you accept a mother's role in Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai?
While I was doing 'KSBKBT', I had acquired the image of 'Prajakta chachi'. Unfortunately, the image stuck. It's very difficult to get offers of young characters once that happens. Producers may still want to cast me but I don't think the channel would allow it. So finally I got bored of waiting for work and decided to take it up. I'm playing mother to Kripa.

Weren't you worried about taking it up?
Initially, I was worried about my image again. I was also a little sad as I felt that it was too early for me to play mother to grown-up characters. After all, I wasn't that old. I almost gave up workouts and started putting on weight. I started looking older than my age. Even people around kept telling me that it was okay, as I had put on weight.

Sujata Segal is Z Segal's granddaughter
By: Shaheen Parkar
November 25, 2005

Sujata Segal
Sujata Segal plays Naina (Angad's mother) in the Sony daily Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai. As the obsessive mother who does not want anything (read Kripa) to come in the way of her son's success, her character is often scheming and sometimes sugary in this Balaji drama.

But a lesser-known fact about Sujata, is that she is the granddaughter of the legendary actress Zohra Segal.

Acting achanak

"Yes, she is my nani," says Sujata. "She is thrilled that I am also acting. She tells me acting is all about being your self. Don't overact or overreact.

And don't do over-the-top acting. That's a definite no for nani," says Sujata who turned to acting "one fine day, just out of the blue. I was based in Chennai at that time.

A friend of mine casually suggested that Mani Ratnam was auditioning for Yuva. So I thought, why not just try it out for the experience?" Sujata went along and was selected to play the role of Tara, Ajay Devgan's sister in the film. "That was my acting debut," points out Sujata, "Then one assignment led to another."

Zohra Segal
Broken marriages

Extremely articulate and forthright, Sujata points out that she is staying in Mumbai with a friend, solely for professional reasons. "I have a 12-year-old daughter, Madhyama, who lives with my mother (Kiran Segal) in Delhi. In fact my mother is a classical dancer who runs the Pallavi Academy, there." When asked about her personal life, she admits that she has had two broken marriages.

"See, there is no point hiding anything. I was first married at the age of 20, in Delhi. I was a mother by 21. Later, at 27, I wed someone else who was based in Chennai. That, too, didn't work out."

Moving on

She takes these broken marriages in her stride. "There are many things that don't happen as you see it. So you move on," says Sujata who is now keen to make her mark in the acting scenario. "While shooting for Yuva, I got to know Anurag Kashyap who was part of Mani Ratnam's team. Anurag cast me in his film Black Friday."

Television came her way through her agents, Vivek and Vikram of Express Talents. "I had registered with them and they put me on to Balaji. Besides Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai, I have also featured in Time Bomb (Zee) and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (Star Plus) for a short while."

Painted glory

Besides acting, Sujata is also into art and painting. "In Chennai, I spent a lot of time painting and sketching. I am greatly interested in abstracts. Whenever there is time on hand, I love to paint," she adds.
