MY POSSESSIONS

'CAP'TAIN COOL

Hats off to actor Vikas Sethi, not only for his performances on TV, but also because he has a whopping collection of caps

RESHMA S KULKARNI

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown... but replace the crown with a cap and you will find an ardent taker of the same in actor Vikas Sethi. Vikas' favourite accessory is caps, and he possesses at least 90 varieties of the same!
"I've been collecting caps for the past two odd years, though it was never a conscious effort to make a collection. It's just that I used to buy a cap every time I spotted a good piece. Then, before I knew it, I unknowingly had built a collection. I like caps because I feel they are really useful in this hot and humid weather of Mumbai; in fact, that was one of the prime reasons that motivated this hobby of mine."
One would find it difficult to believe that the hot climate would motivate a star to stock caps, given the fact that they live in air-conditioned confines most of the times. Does that relegate his collection to the status of mere showpiece then? "Definitely not. It's true that we spend most of our time indoors whilst shooting, but I use my caps quite a lot, be it in some outdoor shoot, some party or when I play cricket in my building compound every Sunday. My caps are used to their optimum."
Vikas is known to spice up his outfit while attending a party, by co-ordinating it with a cap, something that party-regulars now watch out for. "Yeah, that's true. I make it a point to add a dash of novelty to my get-up with a cap thrown in for good measure, and it never fails to grab attention. Even the most plain of outfits gets jazzed up with a cap." And Vikas has been complimented a lot of times for this innovative streak. So far what compliment has he cherished most? "Well, at one of Ekta Kapoor's parties, there was this great looking girl who came up to me and said that she's seen and liked me without a cap but thought I looked really dashing wearing one."
Vikas, who does not have any particular favourite shop where he buys his caps from, has a wide range of them in all possible kinds— shiny, plain cottons, corduroys, sporty numbers... the works. What are his favourites among them? "I like them all; in fact, I never pick up a cap if it doesn't appeal to me in first glance." He may be cap-crazy, but he doesn't pick up anything without discretion. As he says, "I don't like to wear dual or multi coloured caps. They have to be of a single colour. Also, I am not into the whacky, outlandish sorts for I believe caps are a functional accessory and one should not forget that. The whacky ones are of no use really."
As for maintaining caps, Vikas admits that it's a tough job. He maintains his caps by either regularly dry-cleaning them or washing them himself. On a parting note, Vikas says, "Caps may be a tough to maintain and may also take up quite some space in your wardrobe, but they are a very useful and affordable unisex accessory that has been neglected immensely. If one wants to make a style statement without spending a bomb, caps are a very good option."
