'Acting is God's gift'

The star of Kahiin To Hoga tells Nitin Joshi how Kashish is an ideal role for a debutant.

Aamna Shariff. If the name doesn't strike a chord, try Kashish. Yes, the protagonist of the daily soap Kahiin To Hoga. At the recent Star Parivar Awards, she won two awards. One was the Best Jodi with Sujal, the other was the favourite sister award. Wow. And, guess what? Kahiin To Hoga happens to be the actress' debut performance. ''Isn't it great?'' asks Aamna with a smile. Before the beginning of her acting career, Aamna had appeared in TV ads like Close Up, BPL, Medimix and Vatika. ''I must have done about 50 commercials. I have also done a lot of videos,'' she adds. She's done videos of Abhijeet, Preeti Pinky and Phalguni Pathak. Right now she is completely immersed in the character of Kashish.

''It obviously feels very good. I keep getting letters and lots of fan mail. It's so encouraging. I have met so many people who have come up and told me that they have named their daughter Kashish. It feels nice,'' says Aamna adding, ''It's not just popular here but abroad also. People relate to it so much and that is so important.'' She plays an independent girl with four sisters, for whom family is of utmost importance. She is a girl with values, who would not go against the family. Kashish falls in love with Sujal only to be married to Piyush. Then her husband dies... and so on. Kashish started out as a confident, reserved girl who, then, goes through a lot in life. ''It gives me so much scope as an actress, because it has so many shades. She has so much to do. So I think it's the best platform one could have asked for to start a career.'' Aamna is a Persian word ''I don't know the meaning of it,'' smiles the pretty actress who's not had any formal training in acting and doesn't believe in it. ''It's God's gift, I think,'' she feels. While Kahiin To Hoga is doing well, she recently did a new serial for a Pakistani channel called Ana which is about two women and their lives, their egos, ''In Urdu Ana means ego,'' reveals Aamna, who plays a bar dancer Megha. She doesn't like it and does it because her mother is also a bar dancer and her family has problems. ''It's an interesting role and again, has a lot of scope for an actress. Also, she's very different from Kashish,'' she explains. ''I don't want to take on too many shows, though there are plenty of offers. And there are film offers too. I am just waiting for the right one. My film debut must be the best,'' she states. Just like her television debut?
