Secondly I'm sorry for the delay. Its just that with all the current events going on in Kggk I kinda lost my muse. And the result is this silly chapter.Im not happy at all with how this chapter turned out.Its more of a filler chapter actually.Sorry guys. Hopefully the next one will be better.
"A library is a repository of medicine for the mind."
Chapter 6
It was a clear, fresh morning after many days of dull skies.Water dripped off the leaves, the sun glinted off the wet ground. The world looked washed and the smell of earth and water hung in the air.
Maithili smiled.
Turning away from the window, she walked towards her closet to get ready for the day.She stood for a few minutes contemplating what to wear. Finally, she chose a plain white churidar with light sequins work.
Hugging her black sweater close to her,she walked out of her house and saw that Parvati was headed towards her.
"Beta, we have to leave now.We have a board meeting to arrange for this evening. We can have breakfast at the college."
"Meeting? Anything important?"
"I.......dont know actually.Mr Mehra called me some time back and asked me to arrange a meeting for today."
********
"Everyone has been informed",Maithili said walking into Parvati's office."But what was so important that it couldnt wait till tomorrow?"
"It...it must be something important, otherwise he wouldnt have asked for it", Parvati said sifting through some papers.
"Hmm.....".Maithili looked at the clock and saw that it was lunch time. "Mamma I gotta go now.I'm meeting Tannu for lunch."
After Maithili left,Parvati put away the file she had been staring blankly at.
Of course she knew what the meeting was for.She hadnt told Maithili simply because she didnt know how to tell her. She,herself, had been quite surprised when Mr Mehra had told her what the meeting was for.
She only hoped everything would be fine.
*********
Maithili and Tannu sat in Maithili's favorite cafe having lunch. She liked it a lot here because of the quiet atmosphere.
Over the years she and Tannu had built a strong friendship.Much more stronger than her friendship with Pragati even though Tannu was also unaware of Maithili's dark secret. And yet,Tannu understood her even without her having to explain anything.
Now,Tannu was a very perceptive girl. She wasn't blind like the rest of her family. She knew that something big was being hidden by her Dadi and Maithili. And whatever it was,it was slowly killing Maithili inside. She didnt try to find out what it was.She figured that if she had to know then she would come to know about it in time. But she did know that Maithili didnt deserve all this unhappiness.
"So then I told him that I'm really really NOT interested in him and that we were better off as friends.Of course, he wasn't exactly happy on hearing that.So he just.......walked away",Tannu said, giving Maithili a lop-sided smile.
Maithili looked back at her with a slightly dismayed expression. "But why?? He is such a nice guy.....I mean, from whatever you told me about him,he sounds like a good person."
"Well that's the problem, you see...."
"No, I dont see......",Maithili replied picking up her glass of water.
"Its just that...he's........he's too nice!"
Maithili raised her eyebrow at her over the rim of the glass.
"Oh come on Mets..........Nice guys are boring.I mean ,ok they are sweet, caring and all that but........they are boring", Tannu said with a "dont-you-agree?" smile.Suddenly her smile turned mischevious."You,of all people, know that."
Maithili slowly put her glass down.
"No", Maithili said, her voice steely."I dont."
"Sure you do", Tannu drawled.
Maithili looked away from her and stared blankly out the window at the people passing by.She always did this.Mention him abruptly in the middle of conversations and completely throw Maithili off her mental balance.
Tannu smirked and decided to let the subject go...........for now.
"So what's this meeting, that you were telling me about, for?"
Maithili looked at Tannu who looked back at her with a deceptively innocent face.
Still a little bit irked, but glad for the change of subject, she answered,"I dont know."
*********
Maithili closed the file she had been working on and flexed her fingers.Looking towards the window she saw that it was well into the evening. The clock on the wall said 7.00 pm. Have I been working that long?
She stood up and stretched. There was still some time left for the meeting.Grabbing her bag,she filed out of her cabin.
She walked through the dim corridors at a slow pace. She had been feeling restless and edgy the whole day for no particluar reason so she headed towards the only place that would calm her down.
The familiar and inviting musty smell hit her as she entered her sanctuary--the library.
She felt herself slowly relax at the comforting sight of books. She didnt know what it was about the library that calmed her.Maybe it was the fact that she could lose herself to the unknown worlds hidden in the books here and forget the world outside.
She headed down the aisles of books towards her favorite corner.Removing a book from her bag,she settled down to read.
***********
The library was quiet and empty with only a few lights are on leaving a large part of the area in darkness. The limited lights blended in with the darkness casting shadows around the place.
He observed her sitting at a small table, a book in her hands, her head tilted over it.
A strand of hair fell over her eyes and with a slight movement of her hand ,she tucked the errant hair behind one ear.
Something flared in his chest and his own hand balled into a fist.
Long back she would have felt his presence and looked up.
Whether it is because so many years have passed or because she feels safe in this place, she did not look up nor did she feel his presence.
She continued to read,unaware.
And his tall form, clad entirely in black, leaned against the door and continued to watch the woman in front of him.He traced her face with his eyes.....the smooth cheeks, the slightly pouted lower lip,the delicate yet firm chin.
He relaxed his hand.
Standing for a moment longer,he moved away from the door, stirring the air but so quietly that when she finally recognized a presence and looked up,there was no one there.
The shadows welcomed him as he moved through the darkened passageways with a quietness, his stride casual and graceful.
