Jumping onto the saas-bahu bandwagon!
Actor Anoop Soni, who recently replaced Mohnish Behl in KGGK, tells Roshni Olivera that he doesn't think a typical family drama limits one's scope as an actor
You've just stepped into Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki... how does it feel?
• Well, it feels great to be part of KGGK. The team is wonderful, with a number of old friends. The serial itself needs no introduction, there are years of great TRPs. It's very inspiring!
Doesn't this mark your entry into the world of saas-bahu soaps?
• (Laughs) You can say that! But on a more serious note, I don't think the saas-bahu dramas limit one's scope as an actor. In fact, I am really enjoying doing the emotional scenes as Suyash Mehra.
How difficult is it to take up a role that somebody else had been doing?
• A replacement is considerably more difficult than starting with a character right at the beginning. Especially if one is
replacing an established actor. The expectations soar but because replacements are getting so common on TV now; I think the audience has become more open-minded and accepting. Anyway, I think the essence of TV is that the character is much bigger than the actor.
Do you know Mohnish Behl well? Have you guys spoken about this?
• Yes, Mohnish is an acquaintance and I have always respected him for the gamut of work he has undertaken. But, no, we have not spoken about this and honestly there doesn't seem to be any need for the same. We are both professionals and will not confuse this with any personal insinuation of any sort.
As an actor, what's more interesting... a family drama, a thriller or comedy?
• It's very difficult to say. Each genre has its own peculiarities. I guess more than the genre, I would gauge a role based on the scope and depth of the character and the potential of the project makers.
One hasn't really seen you in a comic role...
• Well, I did play Sidhu, a doting husband, in I Love You a few years ago. It was a great exercise for me as an actor. It helped me loosen up.
On the small screen, is there any one role that somebody else is doing which you think is fantastic?
• Well, I wouldn't say I have any regrets, but due to date issues I had to refuse the lead in Siddhant. I think that was a great role to essay with a number of shades. It had a lot of potential.
