'Meri Biwi Wonderful' is the best comedy on TV !
By Ad-Lib

Tanaaz Currim is back on TV after a two-year sabbatical. Once again, she is winning hearts playing a fairy on Sony s comedy serial Mere Biwi Wonderful. Talking to Sify, she discuses the reason why being labeled a comedienne has been a bane to her career and how she plans to pursue films with a vengeance now that she is back to her first love-acting.

Why were you so low key the last two years on TV?

Frankly, I was not happy with the same kind of Saas-Bahu roles that were around so I preferred to take a break and wait till better roles came my way. During this time, I did a few movies but didn t want to succumb to doing these serials where I would be relegated to doing vamp roles.

You've always been labeled as a comedienne.

Yes, and that can get very frustrating at times. As an actress, it has limited me as I only get offered certain kinds of roles. Very few people approach me with different kind of roles, as the channels want to see me doing the same funny things. I know I am capable of doing so much more as an actress but this label kind of restricts me, as no one wants to give me serious stuff to do.

Your new serial, Mere Biwi Wonderful is yet another comedy.

Yes, it s a comedy but it has a very good script. Sony bought the rights from Columbia Tristar of the original English serial I Dream Of Jeannie to make it in Hindi. After I auditioned for the role, it was sent to London where I was approved. I feel good that I got selected to do the main role in the serial, as it s probably the best comedy on TV today. For me, this comeback after two years has been worth it because I got such a great role even at this age.

Tell me more about your role and the serial?

I am playing a fairy who falls in love with a normal guy. On my wedding night, I tell him I am a fairy but he doesn t understand what I mean till I do a bit of magic. But since he doesn t like it, I promise I will never do any magic and behave like a normal woman. It s a comedy that revolves around the emotions I share with my husband. Then there is mymother who refuses to accept him and keeps turning up and doing magic to annoy him.

Doing this role must be easy, as you ve been doing comedy for years.

I had to work hard on my appearance, especially on my make-up and costumes. Since I play a fairy, I couldn t get hyper emotional like a human being so I had to curtail my emotions. I also lost a lot of weight for the serial, as I wanted to look good. Just because you are doing comedy doesn t mean that you must look funny. I wanted to look great and that took me a while. Playingthis fairy has been challenging for me because despite it being a comedy I have nothing funny to do, just react and that is very difficult.

You ve been dabbling with movies as well.

My role in Kaho Na Pyar Hai was very appreciated and after that, I did a few movies more. I did a role in Deewangee, which was good. Then I have done a song for Rohan Sippy s Kuch Na Kaho. I am also playing a nice sweet role in Sooraj Barjatya s film. I have been offered many roles but I haven t taken them on, as most of them were the same predictable sister or friend roles. I know I can do better and so I have been waiting for the right roles to come my way. I also want to do Hinglish and English films, as I know that s my forte.

What s up on the personal front?

I am single despite what people say. I have been linked with many guys including Farhan Khan but they are all my friends. Link-ups are a part and parcel of this profession so I am not affected. All I know is that I want to pursue my dreams of being a better actress. I want to do better roles, act on stage and concentrate on movies. That's my plan for the future.

The mainstay of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki

SHE may have become a much-pursued star of the small screen with her role of Parvati in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki but Sakshi Tanwar is no stranger to the arclights.

Sakshi Tanwar in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki: Model womanBefore KGGK she had already done cameos in serials like Juhi, Bhanwar, Rajdhani, Paridhi and more. Besides she has done ads for Horlicks, Tata Tea, Usha Sewing Machine and more. "I look forward to more such meaningful roles in the future," says Sakshi a software expert by education.

Seeing her performance, it is not surprising that she is flooded with small screen offers but what she is looking forward to is Yeh Jeevan Hai where she plays the character of Nafisa who, she says, is just like me in real life — carefree and bindaas.

But what she's not bindaas about is her acting career. And her dreams are not just confined to the small screen. Bollywood is the next step where she wants to emulate Tabu. "She's my role model says the star who herself has spawned a number of role models after her hit performance in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki.

Makdee's star: Shweta Prasad

MAKDEE'S DOUBLE TROUBLE: Shweta Prasad

Shweta Prasad, the new kid on the block, has been entangled in the Bollywood web through Vishal Bharadwaj's film Makdee.

All of 10 years and studying in Standard V of Swami Vivekanand International School, Kandivili, the Malad-based girl has come a long way from reading storybooks in Jamshedpur to acting in films.

"Three years ago, I did a serial called Agnichakra. My mother Sarmistha is a writer.

I have basically been into dancing for a long time. My parents have been into theatre. So I got into acting and things kept happening," says the talented girl who has done a remarkable job in a double role in Makdee.

Even Vishal Bharadwaj is full of praise.

"Seasoned actors and technicians who have seen the film are surprised. Many even asked me how I managed to get talented twins to act in the film. They didn't realise that Shweta was playing a double role," says Bharadwaj.

Shweta, who has acted in serials like Baat Ban Jaaye, CID, X Zone, Sshh… Koi Hai, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki and Kutumb, among others, had auditioned for Vishal Bharadwaj's film Barf.

"But Vishal uncle did not make that film. Instead, when he was casting for Makdee, he called me."

As you are speaking to Shweta, you realise that the girl has been groomed to answer queries well. Was she afraid of acting with Shabana Azmi who plays a witch in the film? "Yes, but I was only scared of her make-up and not her.

I was a trifle nervous, but Shabana aunty was so accommodating. She was very nice and cooperative. She is a great actress and I loved her work in films like Masoom," says Shweta. Three years of acting, and so much gyaan.

How was the Makdee experience? "It was fun. We were shooting in Alibag and Goa. The entire shoot was like a picnic. We had great fun.

I even sang a song in the film along with Makrand uncle (Deshpande). I have a double role of Chunni and Munni in the film. I am more like the mischievous Chunni, so I could relate to that character. I am not silent like Munni, but anyway I enjoyed acting in both roles," she says.

Her five-year-old brother Rahul enjoys directing her more. "He pretends to be my director and says 'rolling, camera, action'. I think he will become a director one day," laughs Shweta.

The little actress has her priorities chalked out well. "While shooting for Makdee, I had to take leave for 22 days from school. Luckily, my teachers and my principal support me a lot. I also manage to get above 80 per cent in my examinations.

But I cannot act continuously as it does affect my studies. So I am being very selective," she adds.

One or two films more and Shweta will call it a day as a child actress. "But I shall be back. I want to be an actress. But that will take at least eight to nine years.

So I shall finish my studies and start acting again later," she says confidently. As for now, "I hope people do watch Makdee. It is a nice film. It is not just for kids. Everyone will like it," she says.

Shweta Prasad in Vaah! Life...

Courtesy: IndiaFM

Child actress Shweta Prasad's performance has been appreciated in films like Makdee and of course recently in Iqbal. She will now star in Mahesh Manjrekar's Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi along with Sanjay Dutt, Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao. The young actress has decided to take a break from tele-serials and concentrate on films only. This decision has also helped her concentrate on her academics, as films are shot at one go.

Shweta has acted in television serials like 'Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki' and 'Karishma Ka Karishma'. She is also quite excited about Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi and says that Amrita, Shahid and herself are like buddies now.

Interview with child artiste Shweta Prasad
"I just visualise the trouble the character is going through and start crying"

Exuberance and confidence were the two qualities that prompted Shweta Prasad's mother to take her seven year-old daughter for auditions nearly three and a half years ago. Shweta's mother Sarmistha's intuition was bang on the spot and her faith in her daughter's histrionic abilities justified as within a short span of time, Shweta has managed to make audiences sit up and take notice of her talent. Her first big screen performance as Chunni and Munni in Makdee has won her accolades from the critics in addition to the adulation of the masses.

Shweta is no stranger to the small screen; she stars in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii as the famous 'bahu' Parvati's daughter Shruti.

However, Shweta began her acting career with a serial based on real-life incidents called Agnichakra on Zee. She has also acted in Sony's C.I.D., Baat Ban Jaye and a few others. Kutumb and Kahaani followed... Her mother feels that she is a natural actor and has always been the centre of attraction amongst kids her own age. Dressed in casual jeans and a dressy top, Shweta , accompanied by her mother, spoke at length to indiantelevision.com's Trupti Ghag. Excerpts of the conversation-

The general assumption about child artistes is that their parents enact the scene and the children just copy them. How do you manage?
I am the one who decides how I am going to act in any particular scene. My mother helps me decide as to which assignment I should accept. She has never told me how to act. It is not too difficult to act. I get a script, which includes several details: as to how I should express myself; or what tone I should adopt when I am narrating the lines. It is easy that way. However, I make sure that I rehearse beforehand, prior to a final rehearsal with the director.

What about the more difficult ones, how do you go about it?
Till date I have been acting with reputed directors. In fact, I make it a point to select my serials and films carefully. Working with the professional directors was a good experience as I am able to get all the information in advance. This has also enabled me to pick up the nuances of the characters. The details outlined in the script also help to get more information. If there are any difficult scenes, I ask my director to demonstrate what is expected of me and how he wants me to emote. Sometimes, I just follow my instincts.

"I am a spontaneous actress. My acting is based on my instincts "

Do you allow yourself to be guided by your instinct or do you just follow what the director tells you to do?
Of course, I am a spontaneous actress. My acting is based on my instincts. Usually, the directors give me their basic guidelines for approaching a particular scene but if I feel that I could take a different approach, I let them know. Like for instance, when I was shooting for Makdee Vishal uncle (Vishal Bharadwaj) used to tell me how he wanted a scene to be enacted. He also used to ask me to act in my own way. He did accept some of my suggestions.

Who is your favourite director?
Actually I have enjoyed working with all my directors. (after much coaxing she adds) Well, Vishal Bharadwaj is my favourite director, (then quickly adds list of all other directors as well).

How did you land the part of Chunni and Munni in Makdee?
I had auditioned for a film called 'Barf' for Devgan production, Vishalji was present during the screen test. Unfortunately, the project got canned but Vishalji offered me the central character in the movie that he was planning to make. This is how I managed to bag the plum role in Makdee.

How did you manage to do the double role in the film Makdee ?
We shot in Alibaug for around 22 days. I simultaneously gave the shots for both Chunni as well as Munni. It was fun. It was so real that every time, I watch the movie (I must have watched it atleast 20 times), I think I am living in 'Sitapore', the village where Chunni and Munni live.

"Chunni is more like me and so I did not have any difficulty in portraying her "

How did you switch from Chunni to Munni?
Well, Chunni is more like me and so I did not have any difficulty in portraying her. However, I did a little bit of background work to portray the character of Munni. I talked about her to Mom and to the director. I put myself in her shoes. But, to tell you the truth, I never really liked her. She is 'Miss-goody-two-shoes', gets scared easily and even stutters. However, there are some shades of 'her' in me such as the fact that I, too, am good in my studies.

How was it to act with Shabana Azmi?
Shabana Azmi is a legendary actress but she was very supportive. She had no starry airs. She helped me with my role too. I can never forget the time that I first saw her with the make up. She looked so scary and ugly. I could hardly believe that she was the Shabana Azmi who I admired.

How much preparation do you require for each shot?
Not much really! If it is a small scene, where I am required to cry, I stare at some thing or put glycerin or squirt water in my eye. Sometimes, I just visualise the trouble the character is going through and start crying. For example, when I had to cry as both Chunni and Munni in Makdee , when their screen mother dies, I tried to think of what if I would do if I lost my mother. And the tears started rolling out immediately. The scene wherein I had to make some extra efforts happened during the shooting ofKahaani.... . There was this scene where my character is angry with her screen mother Parvati for leaving her and becomes so upset that she flings a vase at her mother. I tried to visualise how I would react if my mother were to leave me. This is my best scene till date.

How do you manage both your studies and work?
My school teachers and my principal encourage me. They are very proud of me and help me out if I am unable to attend my school. My mother is very particular about my school. I make it a point to attend school regularly. I missed school only during the shooting of Makdee . In fact, I have some sort of a contract or agreement with directors to the effect that I shall work only after the school hours.

How did you land the role of Shruti in Kahaani...?
Sakshi Tanvar who plays the role of Parvati is my mom's friend. She put in a word for me. I was called for an audition and I got the part.

How was the experience of working with Balaji productions; Kahaani... to be more precise?
In the beginning, I was very apprehensive about working with so many good artistes. But, my fears were proved unfounded. Everybody was cooperative, helpful and I have learnt a lot. Now, we are like a big family.

Which is the best children's show on TV, according to you?
I am very fond of Cartoon Network. I also watch Kahaani...

What is your favourite film (other than Makdee of course)?
Terminator 2 and after that I think Edward Scissorhands, Jurassic Park, Matilda and recently Scooby Doo. I love watching horror and action movies. In fact, I was just watching Addams Family before I came to meet you.

What is the best and worst thing about being a known face?
Every thing about being famous is great. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. People recognise me. They want to click photographs with me and ask for an autograph. I love to be in limelight. The only thing that I miss is using public transport.

Anything in near future?
I am working for a serial for Star Plus called Karishma ka Karishma , a take-off on the English sitcom Small Wonder. I am playing Harriet. It is a fun role. My mother and I are also talking to other directors. I shall probably act in two more movies once the details are finalised. I am planning to take a break after two years and concentrate on my studies. I shall certainly be back after 8-10 years.

"I landed in Mumbai the same morning and the flight was delayed, so I barely had a few hours to call up everyone, arrange for the khanna, peena, etc." Anyway what began as an impromptu celebration at her Oshiwara home, turned out to be a birthday to remember for Tisca as the party rocked till the wee hours.

Television personalities express their opinions about this recent turn of events and talk about the superstar, whom they have all grown to love and admire.

Riya V Anandwala talks to them.

Chetan Hansraj

Chetan Hansraj
Yes, I really think that he needs to chill for a while. He is been working day in and day out. He is doing a lot of movies, singing and of course his show, KBC 2, so what I think is that he need not take a break, but must chill for 15 to 20 days.

Looking at some of the most forgettable roles TV actors have done recently…

Shama Sikandar
Filmography

Pardesi Re (2002)
Shaheed-E-Azam (2002)
Ansh (2002)
Patth (2003)
Basti (2003)
Chand Bujh Gaya (2005)
Role: Shama hasn't had a great track record as far as films are concerned. She has done a string of B-grade flicks, like Ansh (with Milind Gunaji), Patth (with Sharad Kapoor), Pardesi Re (with Ashutosh Rana) and Basti (with Faisal Khan). In fact, Basti (released in 2003) was one of her bolder films, in which she plays Faisal Khan's love interest, and even shares a couple of smooches with him.
Impact: Sikander is photogenic and enacts her part with conviction.

Anuj Saxena
Fimography

Sar Aankhon Par (1999)
Role: His debut film, opposite Shruti Ulfat, failed to generate any response. He was seen playing the male lead.
Impact: This doctor-entrepreneur-actor took refuge in television. Presently, he's awaiting the release of his next film, Lips.

Amarr Upadhyay
Filmography

Dhoondhte Reh Jaoge (1998)
Dahshat (2000)
Censor (2001)
Loc — Kargil (2003)
Jodi Kya Banayi Wah Wah Ramji (2003)
Dhund —The Fog (2003)
Roles: After moving from the small screen to Bollywood, Amarr Upadhyay didn't exactly land himself any major roles. Although Wah Wah Ramji was the only film where he had a substantial part, in the rest, the actor had hardly any screen presence.
Impact: Amar Upadhyay is ordinary, although he tends to get loud and theatrical at times. Also, losing some weight would help his appearance.

Shilpa Saklani
Filmography

Tere Liye (2000)
Special appearance in Na Tum Jaano Na Hum (2003)
Role: In the film, Shilpa plays a young and successful film star who comes into the lives of a music band to find her own destiny and future. Impact: There has been no mention of Shilpa's acting in any reviewance.
Taran Adarsh

Narayani Shastri
Filmography

Chandni Bar (2001)
Role: Narayani Shastri was seen as the inmate of a beer bar in suburban Mumbai. She essayed the role of a helpless girl, forced to take up dancing in the bar in order to make ends meet.
Impact: A minuscule role, it went unnoticed, courtesy Tabu's overwhelming presence.

Shveta Salve
Fimography

Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi (1999)
Role: She played a small cameo of a college girl in the film. She was a part of the gang comprising the lead characters — Dino Morea, Sanjay Suri and Rinke Khanna.
Impact: It surely didn't get her meaty roles in other Bolly flicks. But she moved on to become a popular face on television, with soaps like Kittie Party and Lipstick.

Arjun Punj
Filmography

Tere Liye (2001)
Time Paas (2005)
Role: In Time Pass, Arjun plays the role of Vishal, who develops sexual feelings towards his family friend.
Impact: Arjun Punj seems to have a massive SRK hang-up, and it shows all the way. Although he does an okay job in some places, he should refrain from using those typical SRK mannerisms.
Taran Adarsh

Nikkhil Arya
Filmography

Valentine Days (2003)
Role: The actor, then known as Nikhil Sakhrani, was seen playing Samir, a warm-hearted man who paves his way as one of the suitors for Jeena, the only daughter of an Indian father and American mother. While Jeena faces the culture curry after landing in the country, Samir comes to her rescue.
Impact: Neither…nor Nikhil Sakhrani give a convincing account of themselves
Taran Adarsh

Chaitanya Chaudhari
Filmography

Love At Times Square (2003)
Kyon?(2003)
Role: Set in US, Dev Anand's Love At Times Square is essentially a boy-meet-girl story. The plot revolves around Bobby (Chaitanya Chaudhry), Raj and Sweety. Both men fall in love with her, but for different reasons.
Kalpana Lajmi's Kyon? revolves around five college friends – Vikram (Chaitanya), Tony, Amar, Neha and Shilpa.
Impact: Barring Chaitanya Choudhary… none of the newcomers strike a chord in Kyon?
Taran Adarsh

Tina Parakh
Filmography

Satya Bol (2004)
Role: In this film, Tina plays the wife of protagonist Manish Singh. Her character's name is Sandhya.
Impact: Tina Parakh looks charming and makes an impression in this male-dominated flick. She leaves a mark in the scene when she walks out on Manish.

TV has its own profile and its own icons. We saw two of them this week on Star World's Koffee With Karan. 'Tulsi' and 'Parvati', aka Smriti Irani and Sakshi Tanwar, were a barrelful of fun. Smriti and Sakshi may be rivals on TV. But, as Smriti told Karan, they're friends in real life. "I think Tulsi and Parvati are twins separated at birth and a lot of journalists when they call up say there's some rivalry happening. But what mostly transpires between me and Sakshi is we sit together and crib about everything." Smriti also revealed why she looks overweight. "I did try to lose weight and I started looking younger than my screen-son Gautam who is actually my classmate from back school." Not to be left behind Sakshi Tanwar called Abhishek Bachchan the hottest hunk in Indian cinema. She called Salman Khan "mindblowing" and said she would love to play Rani Mukherjee's role in Black. When asked why she thought her show Kahanii Ghar Ghar Kii was better than Smriti's Kyunki Saas, Tanwar replied, "Because the characters in Kahanii are more human."

Aamir Ali awaits first release 'Anjaan'

Actor Aamir Ali is eagerly awaiting his first major release, "Anjaan". The film marks Ali's transition from being a familiar household name on television (in "Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki") to the big screen.

One of the four protagonists in Hansal Mehta's "Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai", Aamir considers this film to his official film debut. Interestingly the role in the serial "Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki" came to him only later after Mehta approached him for the film.

"It was decided that I would be launched in the film. However there was a slight delay during which I was offered the role in 'Kahani..' and I decided to take it up," Ali recalls.

Unlike other actors, Ali was not apprehensive that the 'television actor' tag would prove to be a barrier in films. "I didn't have any of these apprehensions then and even now."

In "Anjaan", Ali plays the title role of a mysterious stranger who creates havoc in the lives of a husband and wife, within a few days after he visits their house.

According to Ali, his role in the suspense thriller has several shades to it. "I am glad that I have such an interesting role in the beginning of my career," he says.

Ali intends to focus on films now. "That's because there's too much of exposure on television and the impact of the two media is different."

Moreover, Mehta has already signed him for the title role of his next film, "Raghu", which will start in January.
