Kahani khatm

After weeks of speculation it is confirmed that the long running saas bahu insignia Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki is going off air. NIDHI MITTAL tells you the real Kahani behind the pullout --

This one needs no flowery introduction to set the mood of the story. Yes, the age-old soap opera and the second most important one from the saas-bahu treasure trove, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki is finally coming to an end.

Eight years of non-stop Parvati, Om and their ghar. Eight years of our love and hate relationship with this saga of endless vamps and family splitting plots and endless multiple marriages and illicit love affairs -- it's all coming to an end.

"Star TV is planning to pull out the show. And it will be replaced by a non-Balaji, non-saas-bahu show with new faces and a fresh storyline," says a source. The grapevine had it that the popular soap would be replaced by Kasturi, since it is garnering good TRPs and any new show would not be able to match up to Kahani.

But sources said, "neither would it be replaced by any existing show, nor would the prime-time slot be occupied by any reality show. It will be something fresh, something never seen."

From the time rumours of the show going off the air caught up, a lot of smoke spread around. It was said that Kahani will be replaced by Rajan Shahi's upcoming love story. Also, the rumour mill had it that the pull-off is happening because of the dipping TRPs which had highly disappointed Ekta Kapoor. Also, since Sakshi Talwar has been keeping busy with Mahabharata, she hardly has time for Kahani now.

However, the rumour that takes the cake was that not only Kahani but also Kyunkii is reaching its end. The buzz that the two most famous shows on television, which popularised the saas-bahu terminology so much so that we saw an unending launch of serials on similar lines, will disappear together is hard to gulp.

It all began with comments made by Bidaii actresses Sarah Khan and Parul Chauhan who claimed that Ekta had called them to offer a role in a new show which would replace Kyunkii. But the Bidaii loyalists humbly turned down the 'big' offer. The furious Ekta then decided to clear the air and issued a comment saying, "we have just signed a fresh contract with Star for Kyunkii." She also threatened to sue the two young entrants in the industry.

"If we had to replace a show like Kyunkii, why would we ask these non-faces to act in such an important replacement. It would be someone like Smriti Irani who could pull the new show off, the way it happened when Kavita went off air," says Nivedita Basu, creative head of Balaji Telefilms.

On Kahani, the Balaji officials still prefer to be silent. Repeated efforts to get their take on the show's pull off couldn't fail to bear fruit. Says an insider: "Star is planning for a complete programming revamp. A lot of competition has entered the market with new channels like Colors, though Star still maintains its top position. But we have to move on with time. After eight years and almost 1,650 episodes, we might eventually pull out the show, though we are still not sure of the show that will replace Kahani. After all, how long can one stretch a story. But we have still not conveyed our feelings to Balaji."

All said, we should not forget the actors who have remained consistent with the show, though they too owe a lot to it. "This show has made our careers. While I have not received any official statement on this, I can't describe how I will feel when Kahani will come to an end.

The show has created its space in Indian history, but like many other famous personalities who make a mark but pass away finally, this show too will die. However, nothing would be able to take its place," says Kiran Karmarker who plays Om.

As of now no particular date has been decided for the concluding episode, but everyone would want to know what happens to Parvati's ghar at the end after all the Chhayas and Trishnas.
