vat savitri is pooja done by married woman for husband long life... there is story behind it. Satyavan and savitri were husband and wife. Savitri was pure as same as kali.. Her husband one day falls from tree(vat/vad) and he died. Yamraj came to take away his life.. but savitri kept following him demanding life of satyavan back.. Finalky yamraj gave up and return life of satyavan back... all this things happended under vat thats why this pooja is known as vatsavitri...

married woman keep fast and does pooja of vat. also sacred thread is tied on vat with 7 pheras/rounds.. 1 phera for one life. i hope this helps..
