Apurva Agnihotri on his return to the tube.. in conversation with Riya V Anandwala What made you take on Say Shava Shava? My wife, Shilpa, thinks I sing quite well. One fine day she told me, "Stop singing only for me. Go out there and sing for others." (Laughs) So here I am. Weren't you apprehensive, given the competition? There are so many celebrity-based music shows on air already.. Those who love to sing will never think twice. I took up the show because I'm confident that there will be no ego clashes. You're also doing a serial with Deeya and Tony Singh. Yeah, Radha ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi. It's a simple story.. very real. I love it. How different is the Shekhar of Radha ki Betiyaan.. from Armaan of Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi? Shekhar is subdued.. he doesn't try to be cool like Armaan. Why was Kajjal such a disap- pointment? A good show needs a well- written story. There's lit- tle an actor can do with a badly written story.. be it Amitabh Bachchan or me! Didn't you express your displeasure? Whenever they asked me for my opinion, yes. Not that it made a difference. You were linked with Surveen Chawla while the show was on. The best way to react to such rumours is not to react at all. Give rumours time and they die a natural death. My blood would boil when I read such gossip but I didn't owe an explanation to anyone. Didn't the rumours lead to friction in your marriage? No way! Shilpa and I would party all night, read the gossip in the morning and then plan our next party. Why this long break from television? Ninety-five per cent of the roles offered to me were just like Armaan of Jassi Jaisi.. Beggars can't be choosers. On TV, actors are pretty much like beggars. You can't demand a different role. What has Shilpa been up to? She's hardly seen on TV these days. She wants to enjoy life. (Laughs) She's become very lazy. But her track in Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi will return soon. What's your take on long-running soaps like Kyunkii..? Every soap has a fixed shelf-life. If stretched beyond a point, it can get boring. Any plans to return to films? Sure, I'd love to direct or even write a film some day. Are you serious? Yes. I've been writing for a while now. I need to be financially secure before I return to films. That's why I'm doing TV. I know that if I become an assistant director, I'll be paid peanuts.
