Sweet on Armaan

image

Apurva spent his early years in Kanpur and shifted to Mumbai in 1985. He was keen to become a pilot — "I flew for around 15-20 hours" — but destiny steered his course toward films when Subhash Ghai signed him for a pivotal role in Pardes.

Popularly known as Armaan Sir, Apurva is married to Shilpa Saklani who is better known as Ganga. After going through a Tom and Jerry chase, we finally pinned Apurva at Chaithrath studios, Powai.

In between mouthfuls of sinfully rich kheer brought by Rakshanda, he spoke about food. We had threatened to bop him on his head for giving us a run around but he was charm personified.

Apurva's thought for food

I normally have nine am shifts, so twice or thrice a week, I wake up early and go for a workout.

The first thing I have in the morning is a glass of milk shake — either a protein shake or a mango shake. I have tea only when I am shooting. At home I don't have tea.

I go to a gym opposite Fame Adlabs for my workout. When I am working out, I don't speak to anybody; I am totally focused for half an hour. Later, I shower and head straight for the shoot.

If I have a day off, my mother prepares aloo ka parathas for me. Otherwise, it's eggs, bread and butter.

There was a time when I was gunning for those six-pack abs. People remarked that I had lost a lot of weight but I was feeling very fit. I was really in great shape, but then, I guess it took its toll on my face — it began looking too slim. Now I don't care because I have realised that in television your physique hardly makes any difference, because you are dressed from head to toe most of the times.

In the studio, I prefer my tea with adrak. Since it's not always possible for them to organise that, I have started carrying elaichi from home, which I ask them to add to my tea.

Recently, Shilpa and I hired a cook and now carry our tiffins to the studio. I don't like to trouble my mother because she has done enough for us. My tiffin is very simple. It usually comprises paneer, rice, roti and a vegetable/ dal.

I like bhindi; I dislike karela. Tadka yellow dal is my favourite.

I was a non-vegetarian previously but now I eat only eggs. My mom is a pure vegetarian. She asked to stop eating non-vegetarian. It's the least I could do for her.

When I am shooting, I keep sipping tea or coffee. By the end of the day, I have drunk 7-8 cups of tea — that's quite a lot.

I am very fond of meetha; I like to have it with my lunch and not after it. I like kheer. My mother-in-law makes amazing sugar-free rasmalai. I am from Kanpur, so I like imarti jalebi and ladoos. I like pineapple pastries any time, anywhere.

My poison is Baccardi.

My mother-in-law is an awesome cook and I have decided that if in my life I ever open a restaurant, I will make her the cook-in-charge. She makes excellent cheesy Italian fare.

By evening, I am ravenous. I like to have a cup of tea and omelette sandwiches. Holiday Inn's masala omelette sandwiches are a class apart.

I like to have an early dinner, but of late, I have been undisciplined.

At times I skip dinner, altogether. I have a protein chocolate bar instead. I have soup and boiled vegetables for dinner on other days.

I love cheese so I like Italian food, especially pastas. After marriage, we have been going out at least twice a week. Our current haunts are Kareem's and The Marriott.

For me dal, chawal and roti is the ultimate meal.

In Kanpur, we used to live in a joint family. But our food habits have remained the same – even in Canada, my cousins still prepare food as the family did when we lived together.

On a hot summer's day, I like to have a chilled glass of beer.

On a rainy day in Mumbai, I like to have omelettes. I am an egg freak.

On a cold winter's day, I would like to cruise on a bike at 100 mph.

I think I resemble a lauki, because I am lanky.

I have never entered the kitchen but I can whip up a mean omelette.

My favourite spice is elaichi.

My favourite appliance is the mixer.

An admission: I like baked vegetables with puris, followed by sugar-free rasmalai at my mother-in-law's.

Shilpa and I both love paneer bhurji. She can cook good non- vegetarian food even though she doesn't eat it herself.

When we were dating, every evening was a romantic evening. Shilpa and I are very fond of watching movies. So a romantic evening would include a visit to the theatre. If the film is boring, we end up binging on snacks.

Apurva's baked veggie

(Courtesy mother-in-law Priya Saklani)
Serves 3-4

1 bunch spinach (wash, boil, drain the water and grind)
2 tomatoes (slice into roundels)
1 packet mushrooms (dice into 4 pieces)
250 gm paneer (cut lengthwise)
150 gm processed cheese (grated)
3 tbsp butter

For white sauce:
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp maida
2 cups milk
1 tsp tomato sauce or puree
50 gm grated cheese
Salt to taste
Freshly grounded pepper

In a non stick pan, heat about one tbsp of butter, add the spinach paste and saut for 2-3 minutes till it is dry. Keep aside. In the same pan, add some more butter and saut the diced mushrooms till done. Keep aside.

To make the white sauce, heat the butter in a non stick pan, add the flour and saut on a low flame till golden. Slowly add the milk, stirring simultaneously. Add the grated cheese and the tomato sauce or puree to give it a tangy taste. Finally, add salt and freshly ground pepper.

To assemble the dish, grease a transparent baking dish. Arrange the sauted spinach. Top it with slices of paneer. Next, add a layer of tomato slices. Mix the sauted mushrooms in the white sauce.

Pour it over the paneer and tomato slices. Garnish with grated cheese. Microwave on high for five minutes and then grill for another five minutes.

The hottest men on TV!

Apoorva Agnihotri

Women just can't get enough of Jassi's 'Armaan sir. He might be snivelling, arrogant, and occasionally quite a loser, but half the country continues to root for Apoorva's bewildering character.

While Tony - Deeya at least have made a start Bimbo sees their poor little 'Armaan Sir' aka Apurva Agnihotri looking completely lost without the support of any serial. Even as wifey Shilpa Saklani who is hubby Apuji's arm candy at all parties is busy shooting for her serials during the day Apurva is seen doing errands all over the town, like running to the market, visiting the barber or keeping fit at the gym.

It doesn't require much effort to keep yourself busy, eh Armaan?!

Shilpa and Apoorva's dream house
By: Shaheen Parkar
August 30, 2005

ROOM WITH A VIEW: Apoorva and Shilpa in their favourite corner
Apoorva Agnihotri (Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin's Armaan) and wife Shilpa Saklani (Kkusum, and Ganga of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi) are never at home.

"We are out for most of the day, shooting — it's only late at night or early morning that you will find us in the house," says Shilpa.

Shilpa does the talking

It is post 10 pm when we catch up with them. As usual, Shilpa does all the talking, while Apoorva answers in monosyllables, sometimes completes a line, or simply smiles. He prefers being reticent, "as there is nothing much to say anyway."

Moved in 8 months ago

Their home in a Lokhandwala highrise is simple. "We shifted here eight months ago from Yari Road, and we have done whatever we could," says Shilpa.

"There is not much time to actually go shopping for the house. That's Shilpa's territory anyway," says Apoorva. "The only stuff that I actually bought was a wall clock which I picked up at a lifestyle store. I liked it, I picked it up," he says.

"At the moment we have done up the living room, for the rest — the kitchen and bedroom — we are taking our time. We are in no hurry," adds Shilpa, who is partial towards glass. "I don't like bulky wooden pieces," she explains.

Summery hues

The living room has a bright yellow dining table with matching yellow chairs, while the sofas are in lime green. There are knick-knacks picked up from here and there, besides two orange beans bags placed near the window.

"This is our favourite corner. "Both us sitting on the bean bags survey the entire scene outside." Their house is on the 20th floor, so there is a good view of Lokhandwala and beyond.

Acting out roles

On the work front, Apoorva has exclusively acted in Jassi for two years. "There is no other acting offer on the small or big screen that has excited or tempted me. I am happy being Jassi's Armaan," he says. He prefers the Jassi of the initial days — the "real" McCoy, as she was at Gulmohar House.

Shilpa laughingly says she is "chakki pissaoing" with Kkusum and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The couple will be seen together in the soon-to-be-launched Star One show on telly husband-wife pairs.

Apoorva has most recently been working in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin and Shilpa has acted in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kkusum. Apoorva is a non-dancer, who is scared as well as excited about this dancing challenge but they both feel that this will be a fantastic experience together.

Actor Apurva Agnihotri, on working with his wife for the first time.

So are you ready to face the camera with your wife Shilpa (Saklani) in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi for the first time?

Yes, though we haven't begun shooting yet, we have shot the promos and it has been fun. She is a good actor and I'll have to be on my toes.

Though we have participated in a reality dance show before, this is the first time we are coming together to act. Shilpa and I have been wanting to act together and now we've got an opportunity.

After a hiatus
After taking a break from work, actor Apoorva Agnihotri is back with the serial 'Kajjal'

BACK AGAIN Apoorva Agnihotri
Life doesn't always give you a second chance. But actor Apoorva Agnihotri wouldn't quite agree with this. After a not-so-happening filmi career, television has certainly given him a new lease of life. After playing Armaan in the popular Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, he is back on the scene with the new serial Kajjal. This time the viewers will see him as Dev Pratap Singh, a successful businessman for whom money is everything. "It is a subdued character of a man who has kept away from the outside world. It's quite the opposite of my role in Jassi... and that's what excited me about it," says Apoorva. JJKN not only made him a household name, but also hot property on the TV circuit. And months after the serial came to an end, he still finds himself being addressed as 'Armaan sir' by people. "I actually don't mind as long as people remember me somehow," is how he sees it. But after acting in that serial for three years, the handsome actor preferred to take time out to recharge his batteries, rather than cash in on his popularity. "Offers keep flowing in, but I prefer to do one thing at a time. And for a TV actor, underexposure is as bad as overexposure. Also, I wanted a break after that hectic schedule. So I just ate a lot of ghar ka khana and caught up with friends and family," he says. Though he agrees nothing can beat what Jassi did to his career, he hopes his new serial will garner as much response. It has been quite a roller coaster ride for Apoorva, who in spite of making a dream debut with Subhash Ghai's Pardes, didn't manage to shape his Bollywood career well. He attributes it to the kind of movies that were offered to him as well as his choices. But he doesn't seem to be regretting it much. "I have seen many highs and lows. As a typical Sagittarian, I don't like my life being too predictable. It's only when you have your share of bad times that you value success even more," he says. The man, who was last seen in the tinsel town with Dund and Lakeer, intends to stick to doing only television for now.

Sir aankhon par
By: Dinesh Raheja
April 24, 2005

When I told a collegian that I was going to meet Apoorva Agnihotri, she suddenly came alive and shot back, "How cool is that! Give my love to Armaan Sir." That's what he is known as after the popular television show, Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin.

The conventionally good-looking Armaan's attraction for plain Jane Jassi (he hasn't recognised her in her svelte new avatar) has filled up several episodes and fired up much debate.

In real life, Armaan alias Apoorva, is married to pretty Shilpa Saklani.

Sunday Mid Day talks to Apoorva Agnihotri about The Male Gaze in a bid to find out how diametrically different are his views on women vis a vis his alter ego, Armaan Sir.

They say men don't make passes at girls who wear spectacles. In Jassi's case, it is spectacles as well as braces. Do you agree that men give a lot of importance to physical beauty?
That's the hard truth. But it's true not only of men but also of women. If women claim that they give more importance to a man's heart than to his looks from the very onset, it's not true. It all begins with getting attracted to a face; qualities like a sense of humour, et al, follow thereafter.

Incidentally when I was in college, I did find a bespectacled girl attractive. But I didn't make a pass at her. That's not me. Also, I would like to add that physical attraction can't sustain a long-term relationship like marriage — you have to start relating to the 'person' in a man or woman.

What did you discover about your wife, a TV actor in her own right, after you were attracted to her?
There were no rude surprises. She was more or less as I had envisioned she would be. She is simple and real, there isn't a trace of superficiality in her.

Why did you resort to an arranged marriage in this day and age?
I think I would call it love-cum-arranged. After pack up one day, a common friend, Rakshanda, organised a meeting with her over coffee at a Barista outlet. She was very cool, very normal. I didn't go out of my way to impress her either. I think at times guys try too hard and it backfires. It works at times and doesn't, at others.

Have you been in a relationship before?
Yes. But I have never been casual about my relationship.

You think all men fall in love more than once in their lifetime?
From the age of 14 to the last day of your life, you keep falling in love. But once you have decided to marry, you have to be committed to the girl for the rest of your life. My father, a film writer, was my role model. He was an absolute family man even though he stayed in Mumbai, away from us, for most part of his life.

What is the most blatant pass a woman has made at you?
At Enigma, a girl passing by pinched my butt.

Can you understand Armaan's soft corner for Jassi?
Yes. Armaan is an unpredictable man.

Do you ever ask the director about Armaan's motivation for wooing Jassi?
I do quite often, but in television, you create situations to extend the serial. There isn't much room for logic and motivation.

Jassi began as a confident woman but now she is dependent on Nina Gupta's character to show her the way. Can't women ever be self-reliant?
Of course they can, but then there is always a difference between real life and a make-believe woman.

Does your male ego hurt at the thought that Jassi is named after the female protagonist and not you?
I am very happy it's called Jassi (laughs) because I have to shoot only for 20 to 22 days; Jassi shoots for 30 days a month!

What is your rapport with Mona Singh, aka Jassi?
She is a very sweet person.

What do you expect from your wife besides companionship and love?
What do I need her for? (striking a pensive pose). I think this is a tough one because needs keep changing with time. I think… I know she will be there for me if and when I am down and out.

You and Shilpa are a DINK (Double Income No Kids) couple. Eventually, when you start a family, who will take the back seat?
I think she will. And she can always come back after two to three years. Look, she's not a very ambitious person, nor am I. If she was ambitious, we would have had our share of problems.

What do you think of the way women are projected on TV?
I think they cry a lot. They look so suppressed. Women in real life, in sharp contrast to the women on TV, are far more in control of their lives.

Does your mom expect your wife to be like the character Ganga she plays in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi?
No. Not at all.

Women are not the only vain species. I can see that you have got your hair restyled.
I have done an extension, a treatment for the hair that increases its volume. I think it's important to feel good about yourself because what's within reflects externally.

At what age did you become aware that you are different from a girl?
When I was probably 10 or 11.

And who answered your questions, if any?
My father would talk to me, man to man. It was very embarrassing.

Who had a greater influence on your life — your dad or mom?
My mom. I am 70 percent like my mom and 30 percent like my dad.

Tell me, has your fan following been affected by your marriage?
I think girls either like you or they don't. Being married doesn't impinge on your popularity; cheating on your wife does. If Hrithik Roshan cheats on his wife, it would impact his career.

It would hold true for me too. A lot of women like Shah Rukh Khan because he loves his wife and kids. They love him much more than someone who is single and is a Casanova.

Are men subjected to the casting couch too?
Yes. But I haven't had to confront it.

Can you understand the psyche of a person who misuses power?
Essentially, people in power can't digest it. My father often told me that it drives people mad.

Would you ever raise a hand on a woman?
Never.

Has any woman provoked you?
10,000 times (laughs). But I would never raise my hand on her, unless I am required to do so for the camera.

Would you use such an acting opportunity as a catharsis? For instance, did you find a release for your pent up anger in the scene where you manhandle Mahima in Pardes?
No. At that point of time, I wasn't anxious or angry (half smiles).

"I believe whatever goes up in life also comes down"

He played the office Adonis in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. Confident, arrogance personified, with a attitude to die for. And now Armaan Sir aka Apurva Agnihotri is back as Dev in Sony's Kaajjal Sabbki Aankhon Mein Basi.

Interestingly, this time too, the character Dev has been sketched somewhat on similar lines. Apurva, who's just back after a 10 day shoot from Mussoorie, he reveals on a rather giggly note, "I play a beast in Kaajjal. And I took up the role cause I love grey characters which are quite challenging to play on-screen."
Well, but in real life the suave and sophisticated actor appears rather unpretentious and very down to earth.

Though slightly difficult to get him talking, the not- so- media savvy actor opens up, often smiling innocently, grinning cheek to cheek and sometimes breaking into a giggle.

So, here goes Apurva on his new show, wife, life and future plans.

Your Armaan Sir act in Jassi won you the best actor trophy at The Indian Telly Awards 2005, but then haven't seen much of you lately?
I had slogged a lot for three long years to essay the role of Armaan Suri. I wanted to take a break. And as far as the award goes, I think I was plain lucky to win it. Because on a personal level, I admire actors like say Pankaj Kapoor in Office Office. I think I still have a long way to go and learn.

But I am sure there would have been offers from Star or Zee. How come your next show is also for Sony?
There were some good offers from other channel but I didn't take them up. Though, I don't think its ethical to mention them. But definitely, I've been lucky for Sony and vice versa, so I decided to go ahead with this show. Also, I don't really have the brains to be choosy, actually I act on my instincts.

What exactly exited you about the character Dev?
Dev is a beast and has shades of evil. He is arrogant, egoistic, prone to anger and thinks money can buy him everything. But there's a logic to his anger and ego. Certain incidents in his life have made him a loner and he has stopped believing in people. I quite like the character and in many ways it resembles Armaan Sir of Jassi. Now, lets hope even Dev works for Sony. Also, the production house is presenting the soap in a unique way.

How are you in real life?
I am an introvert and extremely shy of people. I need to know people really well to open up. Also, I am very scared of being on stage and facing people. I would rather hide it all on the small screen.

So, inspite of being an introvert you've managed to woo one of the most ravishing ravishing woman in tellydom (read Shilpa Saklani)?
(Giggles) Actually i didn't really woo Shilpa, but it was a common friend who played the matchmaker for both of us.

Tell us about your struggling days?
I didn't have to struggle in the TV industry really, but I have had to go through a different sort of struggle. I wanted to be a pilot in life. I spent a lot of money, time and effort to do so and later there were no jobs available for me in the market. After which I lost my father. In terms of money, it was a huge investment..

Apurva- I love grey characters

So, from pilot to acting.. How did that happen?
Acting happened accidently though it was always a second option.

What plans for the future?
Strictly speaking I want to be behind the camera, as a director and writer. Not too many people know that my father Gyandev Agnihotri was a writer. He was associated with some good films like Beta and Mr Natwarlal.

From actor to writer. Won't you miss all the limelight?
I believe in life whatever goes up in life must come down. All this adulation as an actor will not last for too long. I want to go ahead and prove that even not so good actors like me can be good directors.

Are you signing up more films. Haven't seen much of you after the Pardes days?
I did a couple of disaster films which were not worth writing home about. Also, I believe in riding on one horse at one time. Maybe after a period of three or four years, I will be looking at getting into films.

DEEYA SING INTERVIEW EXCERPT
"It is great to succeed without having any love triangles, family squabbles and sudden deaths"
How did you think of Parmeet Sethi and Apurva Agnihotri? Parmeet Sethi was literally sitting at home. 'Jassi...' gave him a new life. Now we see him in 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' and 'Saara Akaash' too...
I don't know whether Parmeet was sitting at home (laughs). But I have always rated him as a very capable actor who should have been given more to do than just show brawns.

As for Apurva's selection is concerned, we needed a fresh face, but at the same time he should look mature enough to head the fashion house and hold his own. So we thought that someone from the film industry would fit the bill.

"If you are indirectly asking me who Jassi is, I am not going to answer"
YES BOSS

Sukanya Venkatraghavan
Posted online: Friday, January 16, 2004 at 0000 hours IST

His film debut was almost faultless. Big banner, reputed director and established co-stars. But inspite of Pardes' success luck still eluded Apurva Agnihotri. Finally the show Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi where he plays the sauve and charming Armaan Suri, has lifted his fortunes as girls all over wish they were Armaan's secretary. A tete-a-tete with the goodlooking actor
Jassi... has happened when you were lying quite low.
Yes, the film offers were absolutely uninspiring. I think the Pardes hangover still continues because most of the roles that I was offered was of an NRI. They would come to me with visuals like ,"You will be coming down from London. The first shot is of you arriving at the airport".. and so on. Every story sounded the same to me. As an actor I cringe from doing anything stereotypical. But Jassi... has been a suprise entry in my life. I had never really thought of television as a career option. So how come you decided to foray into it?
I was initially confused when Tony and Deeya Singh approached me for the role of Armaan Suri in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. Television was an unknown territory for me. The approach and the scale is different, so is the working style. But when I heard the story and screenplay there was no more dilly-dallying with the decision. Anyone would have grabbed the role. Did you watch the Columbian production to get a a feel of the character?
I watched bits of it. I wanted to play Armaan Suri my way, without any influence from other quarters. He should be my original design based on the sketch given to me. Hence I took care not to watch too much of the original show. And I must say that our directors have been amazing, guiding us and at the same time letting us innovate. Can you identify with the character in anyway?
No. I don't rave and rant so much in real life. I am a softspoken guy. I am also an introvert and can't dream of chasing women with such fervour in real life. Not that I am not enjoying it on screen.(smiles)

Do you find it difficult to play someone you are not?
As an actor I should be able to excel in any role. I try and play it by the ear most of the time. I don't believe in rehearsing too much. I don't want to go for every shot with too many preconcieved notions. I like to leave room for improvisation. And as for playing someone I am not, I feel a good actor should be able to switch on and off from the character whenever needed. Once I am through with the shooting I don't let Armaan Suri come home with me.

NIGHTOUTpurva Agnihotri

Just say 'Yes Sir'
i, aka Armaan Sir, feels Jassi should be alone. All her life
Harneet Singh
Mumbai, January 11: BET you didn't know that Armaan Sir's special name for Jassi is Jasberry. And that she affectionately calls him Apu Singh.

On-screen in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, Armaan (ne Apurva Agnihotri) might come across as a cad who breaks Jassi's heart every day. But in real life, they're good friends. ''Every time we do a scene together, something magical happens. If I had my way, I would work with her for the rest of my life,'' grins Apurva.

And a text message forwarded by the show's co-director Diya Singh only reaffirms the couple's chemistry. ''Mona (Jassi) andApurva are the Kajol and Shah Rukh of the small screen,'' conveys Singh. Agnihotri vows never to delete the message.

Mocha, Juhu, where we're chatting, is inundated with shouts of 'Armaan sir'. A gaggle of girls hound the actor for pictures and autographs. ''Do you really love Jassi?'' 19-year-old Ashima wants to know. While collegians Shruti and Mehak declare, ''You have the best smile on TV.'' Agnihotri smiles some more, flashing the deep dimple in his left cheek. Jassi... has given the 28-year-old actor a fresh lease after his Bollywood career didn't work despite a dream launch in Subhash Ghai's Pardes. Now he can't live without Jassi. ''I've lost count how many times I say 'Jassi' in a day. All my lines begin and end with 'Jassi' and since we do about 10-12 scenes in a day, you can just imagine,'' he says, biting into a paneer panini. Though he loves his Casanova character, he swears he's just the opposite in reality. Contrary to Armaan's indecisive nature, Agnihotri married actress Shilpa Saklani (Ganga of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi) three months after co-star Rakshanda Khan introduced them. While it was love at first sight for him, Shilpa took time to be convinced. ''My screen image came in the way,'' he says. His wife loves the serial, especially the scenes between Agnihotri and Parmeet Sethi. Both actors are so attuned to each other's timing, it almost seems like gay bonding. Agnihotri gives a bark of laughter. ''I know what you mean. I love Parmeet. He can chew up anybody in comedy.'' Of course, he can't say the same about his other co-star Samir Soni who apparently left the serial because of ego clashes with Agnihotri. ''No way,'' denies Agnihotri. ''I really like Samir. He left for personal reasons,'' he shrugs, sipping a sugar-free black cuppa.
His contract ends in June, after which he hopes to sign some more serials or maybe films, ''if I get something substantial.'' For now, he hopes to see Jassi's much awaited makeover. ''I'm dying to see her coming down a staircase looking like a model,'' he says. Who does he think Jassi should end up with—Purab, Armaan or Nandu? ''Jassi should be alone. That's what happens to people who have such high standards and who are hell-bent on sticking to their principles.'' Now that's typical Armaan Sir.

Time table
Sexiest babe on TV: My wife Shilpa Saklani
Mona or Rakshanda: Rakshanda, because she changed my life after introducing me to Shilpa

Best actor on TV: Parmeet Sethi
Can't imagine TV without: My hair gel which I apply quite liberally to keep my floppy hair in order
One serial you wish you were a part of: None, because after Jassi.., others are routine fare

Rashmi Talwar

Amritsar, June 9

She was in the city today for a shooting spree of the serial. The shot was canned around her co-star Armaan Suri alias Apoorva Agnihorti, popping a surprise by proposing marriage to Jassi, on the Walia family's thanksgiving visit to the Golden Temple. Jassi, daughter of Col Jasbir Singh and Rajinder Kaur, says it was a ''mere stumble'' into the office of the producer that struck gold for her acting career. But Apoorva, her co-star, finds the film industry a ''ruthless place'' after his famous screenplay father Gian Dev Agnihotri's demise.

The star of hit film ''Pardes'' by Subhash Ghai, Aproova, a BA-Economics, would have preferred to be a pilot than an actor. Criticised for his effeminate hairstyle in the serial, the struggle in his acting career has been long and tough owing to his poor PR (Public Relations), which is construed as 'arrogance', he claims.

Outofthebox

In real life too, I'm an obedient son. Whatever my mom (Radha Agnihotri) says is final. She has been a great support to my sister and me, especially after my father (Gyandev Agnihotri, a well known writer) expired.

After he passed away and his body was still in the house, the first thing she told me was, "You don't have to worry that dad's gone. I'm still here and from now on I'm going to be your mom and dad."

I think that was a very brave thing to say. More than anything else, it's essential to have the emotional support of an elder at home. You need someone you can turn to for advice and for help in making decisions. Someone who can tell you what's right and wrong and whether you're on the right path.

Mom supported me a lot financially when I took to flying. I wanted to make a career of it at one point. You need to complete 250 hours to turn professional but I quit after only 15-20 hours. At Rs 25,000 per hour, that's quite some money down the drain.

Before Pardes, I was readying myself for a break. I enrolled in Kishore Namit's acting academy. He really helped me. He didn't want to take money from me because he used to know my father. God and my mother's blessings were with me.

Mom always maintained that no matter what the outcome, you have to go out and try your best. That the pluses and negatives shouldn't bias you and there is no reason why you shouldn't be successful.

With wife Shilpa Saklani

Poonam Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha's wife, was instrumental in my bagging Pardes. She's a family friend and organised a meeting for me with Subhash Ghai.

When I met him while he was shooting Trimurti, he asked me to meet him after three months. I thought that must be his polite way of rejecting me. But after exactly three months, I got a call from his office.

I was thrilled when I got paid for Pardes. Subhashji asked me what I'd do with the money and I told him I'd give it to my mom. And I did. We shot in Vancouver for the movie and that was my first trip abroad.

Pyar Koi Khel Nahin, Kasoor and Hum Ho Gaye Aapke followed Pardes and I had complete support from my mom throughout. In fact, she even trusted and supported my decision to marry Shilpa.

3 night workers throw light on the pros and cons

Case study 1
Shilpa Saklani

TV actor who shot extensively at night, for daily soap Kkusum

Raat baaki: Shilpa says she'd rather avoid shooting at night. "It's not the best time to look great for the camera," she laughs. The petite actor overlooked this professional liability until she was single. But once she tied the knot with actor Apoorva Agnihotri, her priorities changed. "Coming home to my in-laws and fulfilling certain responsibilities, made me request the producers to avoid shooting for too many nights at a stretch."

Flipside: Nights shifts took a toll on her system. "Even if I reach home around 7 am after a 12-hour shift, I end up sleeping by 9 am." But with all the noise and sunlight creeping in, it hardly compares to a good night's rest.

Upside: "The only advantage is a great on-screen visual."

Shilpa's tip: "Your personality and profession should match your working hours. I think, the night brings out the best in creative
people like artists and writers."

Style check on telly stars

HitList asked two leading stylists — Nim Sood, who works with Balaji Telefilms, and Anna Singh, who has designed for films and television — who they think should win

Anna Singh's verdict

Apurva Agnihotri

Rating: 7/10

He has a subtle style when it comes to clothes. It definitely works for him.

Nim Sood's grading

Apurva Agnihotri
Rating —
6/10

According to me Apoorva needs a major makevoer. His hairstyle and overall dressing sense is too boyish. He has a European face, and his body structure is overall lean. I would recommend him wearing some linen pants or drawstrings. His clean-shaven look makes him look too young; he should change his hairstyle and streak it.

The final segment of popular awards wasn't much of a shocker when Shilpa Saklani and Karan Oberoi graced the stage to announce the winners for the best actor and actress.

Karan couldn't stop gushing about his co-star Mona Singh winning the award (the two are supposed to be dating each other). When Shilpa opened the envelope to announce the actor, it was already decided that if Karan gave Mona the award, then she would also hand it over to the love of her life.

Shilpa let her screeching and screaming express who the winner was. Husband Apurva Agnihotri seemed more in control, and like everyone else, he thanked the mentors of his show.

WINNER Best actor popular: Apurva Agnihotri for Jassi

Ask a star: Gaurav Gera

Who's going to be the lucky guy who gets Jassi? Armaan and Nandu ponder the question

This week's Ask a Star is Gaurav Gera who plays Jassi's intelligent yet nave friend, Nandu. He is Jassi's best friend, assistant, agony aunt and everything else in between. Here is what readers asked him…

How is your relationship with Apurva Agnihotri? I like the camaraderie that you share with him on-screen. You both make the perfect Jija-Sala pair! — Hema
Dear Hema, firstly, I'm not his Sala as I'm not related to Jassi! As for Armaan, Nandu would like Jassi to be happy. So if Jassi likes him, great. Off-screen, he is a senior and I respect him. We are quite friendly.

Armaan Sir's the same though! Apurva Agnihotri takes a lunch break between shots

Armaan Suri returns to TV

Apoorva Agnihotri

Apoorva Agnihotri and Surveen Chawla, who were last seen in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin and Kahiin To Hoga respectively, have shunned several offers and have been lying low professionally for the last few months. But now the pair is all set to return to television

Apoorva started his career in 1997 with Subhash Ghai's Pardes. An extremely media-shy actor, he is married to Shilpa Saklani (Ganga of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi). He played Armaan Suri in Sony's landmark show Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, which landed him the Best Actor award at Indian Telly Awards last year.

Apoorva Agnihotri and Mihir Misra turned mischievous tykes at the lavish shaadi of Star Plus' COO Samir Nair.

Their jokey banters couldn't have got better when one morning Agnihotri decided to push a groggy-eyed Misra still in his night suit into the pool. Says a witness, "Poor Mihir.

He looked like a ruffled wet cat, which has been dumped in a well. But there were no hard feelings. The boys really had a blast as they would indulge in tennis and pool games while the women would only pore over each other's fancy sarees and accessories."

However, wifey Shilpa did give Agnihotri an earful and apologised for the wild act. Honey, boys will be boys, so what's the point of pulling up their collars?

Absolutely every-telly-body

After braving Nach Baliye with their two-left-feet act, the telly couples (minus Archana Puran Singh, Parmeet Sethi, Amit Sadh, Neeru Bajwa, Supriya Pilgaonkar and Delnaaz Paul) hopped in at Manish Goyal and Poonam Narula's party to have conversations over tall glasses of bubbly.

Apparently, it was a thanksgiving party and the venue (a popular Juhu nightspot) was flooded with white balloons with 'thanks' printed on them.

A guest even mistook it to be Manish and Poonam's calling it quits from the TV grind as he had arrived with a bouquet of roses to bid adieu when Manish volunteered to explain, "We are not giving up our profession.

We wanted to thank all the people who have contributed to our achievements some way or the other. Most importantly, wanted our dear friends to take time out and have fun."

Spotted sweating out at the dance floor: Sai Deodhar, Shakti Anand, Maninee De, Mihir Mishra, Hiten Tejwani, Shabbir Ahluwalia, Rituraj, Yash Tonk, Apoorva Agnihotri, Shilpa Saklani, Rakshanda Khan, Kirron Kher, Manish Goswami, Rohit Roy, Manasi Joshi Roy, Amit Sareen, Ritu Chaudhari, Simple Kaul, Urvashi Dholakia, Harmeet Gulzar, Manmeet Gulzar, Karishma Modi, Puneet Sachdev and Mohit Raina.

Coming to the dress code it was "white or at least a dash of white" as the invite read. Now what with this element white (last seen at Rohit and Manasi Joshi Roy's pre-new year bash)? Are the actors making peace or should we say that they aspire to turn colour blind.
