'I want to do a daily soap & give time to my family'
Vaishnavi, who wants to continue working on TV and at the same time not miss out on her family, chats with PREMA K how she balances her personal and professional lives, despite her hectic schedule

What are you doing in Ek Ladki Anjani Si?
I play Meera, the mother of the protagonist. She's a young, single mother who is a Classical Music teacher by profession. She lost her father when she was very young. Her husband left her when she was pregnant. Meera is very real, impulsive and insecure, in a way and falls for every man who comes into her life.

Do you relate to Meera?
Quite a bit! (Laughs). I've also had those kinds of insecurities, but I channelised them into better areas. My mom is a single mother. My sister and I ended up doing the right things at the right time. The positive side of this is that it made me independent and mentally stronger. I can face situations now. Even Meera has evolved over the years and become stronger. She's also a source of strength for her daughter. She's become more philosophical and introspective. I related to her immediately. I felt I could do justice to her. That's the main reason why I agreed to do it. But I'm a little disappointed since I was promised a lot more things when it started. Somehow, things haven't worked out that way.

How is it playing Isshita in 'K Street Pali Hill' ?
I'm playing opposite Mukul Dev and Rituraj. Both are friends. I'm in love with the Dev, get pregnant with his child, and end up marrying the Rituraj. Circumstances force me to do so. The best part is, all three families live together. It's got a thriller and emotional element to it.

Do you find similarities between Isshita and Meera?
Yes. Isshita is a very real mother and would do anything for her child. Her son has the tendency to do negative things but she loves him blindly. Every time her husband pulls him up for his wrong doings, she complains that he does so because he's not his own son. But my husband and son really hit it off.

What are you doing in the film, Babul?
Honestly speaking, performance wise, I don't have much to do in the film. I have more to do in my TV serials. For me this is more of a comeback to Bollywood . I've done a couple of TV shows for Ravi Chopra. When he approached me for 'Babul', he forewarned me that this was not a performance-oriented role. But I took up the role only because I wanted to be a part of the setup.

So what exactly are you doing in it?
I'm playing Aman Verma's wife. Aman plays Hema Malini's younger brother. We are a young couple supporting one part of the cause. I wear good clothes. I have a youngish look in it. I'm there in all the major scenes and am part of two songs. We have one last schedule now. I'm really looking forward to the film.

Have you done films before?
I did one song in Laadla opposite Anil Kapoor. I did a film, Bambai Ka Babu opposite Saif Ali Khan. That was to be my Bollywood debut. Then there was Barsaat Ki Raat opposite a newcomer, Vivek Shauq. I got television offers before that. However,
it was only after a couple of films that I decided to take them up. I didn't want to do the wrong kind of films, I mean no 'B' and 'C' grade films for me.

Who are your dream directors?
I always wanted to work with Ravi Chopra and now I'm doing Babul with him. It's my dream to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. I've decided to do only good films now. I don't mind playing characters with gray shades but it has to be something substantial and challenging. Other makers I want to work with are Ram Gopal Varma and Madhur Bhandarkar. I can relate to their kind of films and see myself being a part of it. Maybe later, I could hope to work with Yash Chopra and Karan Johar. But I'll still continue to do television.

What are your other plans for the immediate future?
Once these two shows get over, I want to do a daily soap and give time to my family too. I've been shooting for almost 31 days in a month over the past year-and-a-half. My daughter is only three and she needs me. Of course, I do take out time to bond with her especially on unexpected holidays. I want to be part of her growing up years. It gets stressful at times but I've managed to balance my personal and professional lives.

How do you see yourself five years from now?
I'm not unhappy even now, but I would want to see myself as an improved actress. I want to be more relaxed, content with life and doing quality rather than quantity work. I also have dreams of becoming a singer (laughs). I love singing and definitely want to give it a shot sometime
