Chapter 11

8 months later,

Screams filled the air as everyone waits in anxious desperation. Unable to sit still, Jalal had taken to pacing from east to west. Maham Anga, Adham Khan, Sharifuddin, Adga Sahab, Todar Mal and Maan Singh look on. Everyone except Jalal flinches as Rukaiyya’s screams filter through the air again. Suddenly the screams stop and another noise which brings a bead of happiness to Jalal’s chest fills him. A beautiful crying sound. The curtain to the hojra opens and Jodha walks out her eyes filled with happiness and a tiny bundle in her arms. She said “Mubarak ho Shahenshah, aap shart jeet gaye, ladki hui hai.” Everyone gives congratulations to Jalal but Jalal has no eyes for anyone except for the bundle in Jodha’s arms. Nothing is in his sense at that moment. Coming closer to Jodha, he looks at the bundle and for the first time felt the organ which he always assumed used to pump blood, beat in an increased manner. The baby’s eyes is closed shut and she is yawning widely. Her mop of hair along with the body of pale skin matching the complexion of Jalal and Rukaiyya’s skin. There would have been no doubt it is their child. Jalal looks at Jodha and Jodha could see the fear in his eyes. Seeing the reassuarance in her eyes, Jalal made his hands look similar to how Jodha is holding the baby. Jodha holds the baby’s head and slowly supporting the head and body transfers it to Jalal’s arms. Jalal’s eyes filled with tears feeling the baby against him. He kisses the baby’s forehead and the baby’s face scrunches as if unfamiliar with the touch. But she settles down.Jalal smiles and said “Humari shehzadi.”

The baby then opens and lets out a loud cry. Jalal looks at Jodha horrified worried that he did something wrong. Jodha said “Nahi use bhook lag rahi hai Shahenshah isliye roh rahi hai.” Jalal then transfers the baby to Jodha and said “Thike phir aap use Rukaiyya Begum ke paas leke jayiye.” Jodha for the first time looks as if she is lost for words. Jalal looks at her with a puzzled expression and Jodha “Woh, Hum, Ammijaan.”Jalal said “Baat kya hai Jodha Begum bacche ko doodh peena hai.” Jodha seeing the curious crowd standing behind Jalal said “Jee woh Ammijaan ne kaha hai, ki bacche ko humare hojre me leke jaane ke liye. Woh Hakim Sahiba Rukaiyya Begum ka khayal abhi bhi rakh rahi hai aur woh nahi chahti thi ki baccha uss mahol me rahe. Aapko andar bulaya hai.” Jalal nods his head and said “Maan Singh, apne buasa ke saath jao.” Maan Singh nodded his head and left with Jodha, the baby’s cries still echoing through the night.

Jalal confused enters Rukaiyya’s hojra. The scene in front of him increases his confusion. Rukaiyya is crying her head turned away from Ammijaan. Ammijaan is patting her head in a comforting manner as if she is under great pain. Salima Begum is standing near Rukaiyya’s bedside and Hakim Sahiba is directing the maids to clean up the mess. Jalal goes to sit beside Rukaiyya and said “Rukaiyya Begum kya hua, Aap ro kyu rahi hai?”. Rukaiyya Begum just kept on crying. Jalal looks at Ammijaan confused and Ammijaan looks at Hakim Sahiba. Hakim Sahiba informs Shahenshah with her head down afraid of facing Jalal temper. She said “Shahenshah, bacche ke janam dete samay Rukaiyya Begum ko bohut dard se guzarna padha. Aisi haalat me hume unhe dawai dene padhi jiske wajah se woh aage Maa nahi ban sakti.” Rukaiiya’s cries increase loudly hearing this confirmation from Hakim Sahiba. Jalal becomes sad at the thought of no more children but he is still glad that his wife and daughter is alive. He said to Rukaiyya “koi baat nahi Rukaiyya Begum, hum iss baat se khushi hai ki aap aur humari shehzadi dono surakshit aur sahi salamat hai.”Rukaiyya’s entire being changed hearing this news. Jalal thought it is with happiness but the next words out of her thoughts dashed all of his hopes. Rukaiyya said “Woh manhoos zinda kaise reh sakti? Agar woh humare saamne aayegi toh hum usse maar dalenge.”

Jodha tries to quieten down the baby’s cries but the baby kept on crying with hunger. Moti said “Jodha hum doodh leke aa jata hai isse bacche ka doodh toh shant ho jayega.” Jodha said “Nahi Moti, bacche ko Maa ka doodh hi peena chahiye. Maa ka doodh sabse paushtik hota. Isliye bache ke janam hone se pehle hi unhe maa ka aanchal me rakha jaata hai aur maa ka doodh pilaya jaata hai.” Moti said “lekin Jodha Rukaiyya Begum…..”Jodha looks at her in confusion on what to do. Jodha then said to Maan Singh “Maan Singh tumhe apni nazar kahi aur jagah par rakhni hogi.” Maan Singh without any question turns his head. Jodha whispers to Moti on what to do. Moti then removes Jodha’s chunri, and makes Jodha comfortable. Jodha places the baby near her heartbeat. Listening to the heartbeat, the baby’s cries quieten down. Moti wraps a blanket around Jodha and baby to make sure the warmth stays in. The baby’s cries slowly quieten down. Jodha could feel the baby’s rooting against her body, to see where she should latch on. Jodha then separates the baby a little away from her and the baby picks up crying again.

Jalal, Hamida Begum, Gulbadan and Jiji Anga enter the hojra hearing the baby’s cries. Jodha, Moti and Maan Singh stand up seeing them. Jodha looks at Hamida Begum in desperation and said “Ammijaan, Rukaiyya Begum abhi theek toh hai na. Bacche ko bohut bhook lag rahi aur usse Maa ka doodh pilana abhi zaroorat hai.” Hamida Begum looks at Jodha and said “Jodha beta hum tumse kuch maangne wale hai jise shayad tumhare aatma ko thes pahunch sakti hai.” Jodha still trying to quiet the baby down said distractedly, “Kya maangna hai Ammijaan?”. Hamida Begum said “Jodha tumhe apna doodh abhi issi waqt is bacche ko pilani hai Jodha.” Jodha, Moti and Maan Singh look at her shocked while Jalal kept his head down.

Rukaiyya is more concerned that it's a girl and she couldn't get to give birth to a boy. Well it's natural.

it is not strange given the time period this story is from

looks like this baby will be the key to bring jalal and jodha closer

waiting for some really beautiful moments between jodha and the baby, jalal and jodha and all 3 of them.

and for questions regarding how jodha can feed the baby, now there is scientific proof that mothers who do not give birth, or have never given birth can lactate.

In those days, it was common practice to feed each others kids, or have a nanny who would feed the child, specially a royal child.

so, jodha can feed the baby. it depends a great deal on the emotional bonding between the mother and child.

The twist was unexpected but excellent. The chapter is wonderful.
