Chapter 5: Part-II "Snakes in the grass- Foes up on sleeves..
(Outskirts of Amer)
Preparations were done for Jalal's army to march back to Agra. Bairam khan had left for his voyage to Mecca, and Abdul was yet to return from Nagaur with the intel on Shariffuddin, to join Jalal on his march back to Agra.
Something had changed, Jalal knew for sure. These six days without the comfort of Bairam Khan's wise words and warmth of Abdul's friendship...wait! Did he say comfort and warmth? Oh please!when had he ever missed them before? But, it was true, he wished they were here. He needed the distraction, that celestial face, kind eyes, sparkling smile and soothing voice had been reeking sweet tingling torture on his heart ever since. She wouldn't even spare him in dreams. Oh! The agonizing nightmares wouldn't let him sleep.
A woman, really! He has had his share of women in his life, beautiful women. So what is she? What makes his yearning for her so different? He hasn't even yearned for anyone in his life. But here he is standing looking past the same spot, every night from atop the hill, for any sign of anyone, anywhere.
Often, he would wonder if what happened was actually real or he hallucinated. And if it was, what the hell on Earth was he thinking, "fate, "destiny did he really for once believed in what she said? Doesn't he believe in making his own destiny? Isn't he the master of his free will? God, how stupid it was to not go after her, not find who she really was, where she lived? How on Earth he didn't go after what he really wanted so bad? Now, this was first..Oh come-on! Who is he kidding? Since that meeting everything seems to be like one of the firsts. How is he ever gonna search her?Did she really was an Amer'ian? Why did he so badly wanted to believe her, that they were meant to be together? Oh God! If they weren't? how would he be able to breathe through this torture of not seeing her angelic face ever again for the rest of his life? How could she be peace giving and nerve-wrecking at the same time. She struck his soul, and was again the only medication for the cure.
The restlessness was pushing him on the edge..and he knew, a reckless agitated him was a bad bad omen!
(In Amer)
Things were different for Jodha, this was her first encounter with a stranger that had made her heart skip a beat. She had no experience with such stuffs at all. No one to compare to, no questions about, of all people why him? She was amazed how her heart raced at the timid flash of their meeting, his vicinity, his yearning when he said, he might not let her go. It felt so overwhelming to be that important for anyone, as air for life. The festivities of Gangaur, the mirth, laughter, color were adding more divinity to this new feeling of hers. No agitation for her. It was like being afloat on the highest cloud of happiness. Did she meet her better half? It had to be him. She has always been a believer..God has plans for all of us..this chance encounter had to be for some reason..What she had was "faith and she was basking in the serenity of it.
On the contrary, afar, someone was burning in the fire of hell and for once it had nothing to do with the tales of heart. This snake in the grass and foe underneath the very sleeves of Jalal was Sharif'ud'din- Nightmare for Jodha's Amer as well.
(At the fort of Nagaur)
Sharif'ud'din lay wasted on his bed, reaking the foul smell of alcohol. The man was overdrunk and breathing contempt and hatred. The red puffy demonic eyes seemed lost but the thought of Jalal'ud'din wouldn't let him lose consciousness. He had always hated Jalal'ud'din, hated him to death. But, neither that devil (Jalal) could be manipulated, nor there was a chance that he could be ever defeated. The skill, the valour and worst of all, the devil didn't even rely on anyone. A direct rebel was suicide and well any treachery plotted, he would sniff it off, before it could ever be executed. How was he ever, going to take the devil down.
He thought his plan worked when he convinced, Mariam Makani, Hamida Banoo Begum to get her daughter, Bakshi Banoo, married to him (courtsey his maternal influence in the family). He had thought devil's little sister, who Jalal was so fond of could be used as a leverage. But, what did he get, a so called ministerialship of this small, meaningless province. The worst, Bakshi Banoo was too good for being the sister of a devil, whatever pain he inflicts on her, with the hope that he could get a handful of that devil's throat, she wouldn't even let anyone know. This was hell, totally not what he had bargained for.
(He banged his hand on the table, frustrated and spilled over the alcohol).
The attendants shivered in fear.
A troublesome Bakshi entered the room.
Bakshi : What happened my lord?
Sharif'ud'din signaled the attendants to leave. Everyone hurriedly left the room.
The lean, sad figure held her ground. She was full term pregnant. The former princess of the Moguls stood there with nothing but gloom on her face. Her face had still the dull mark of onslaught she had endured couple of days back. Sharif'ud'din studied her timid posture, her fragile features but the moment he met her eyes, his blood boiled. How on Earth she has such an endurance, that even if her entire body crumbled her eyes would never stop spitting resilience. God! Truly a devil's sister.
He sprang from his bed, in fit of rage and grabbed Bakshi by her throat. She winced, but kept staring back.
Sharif'ud'din: You witch! Your devil brother killed my soldiers, and you've the nerve to stare into my eyes asking what is wrong? He killed fifteen of my best mercenaries and you know, for what? That they were trying to abduct a woman for me. Can you imagine he has sent me their mutilated bodies and an official decree asking me the reason for their conduct?
Seeing Bakshi unmoved, and unoffended, he tightened the grip on her throat. Bakshi flinched.
Sharif'ud'din: Eyes down woman! This atrocity could get you killed. You know what, the day you deliver my heir, I'm gonna kill you and then behead your devil brother.
Bakshi (smiled sarcastically): Be careful what you wish for my lord! As long as I stay alive and my child stays safe, your head stays atop your body. Do not be mistaken, it will always be me who will keep the devil at bay. I speak in your best interest.
A threat ran down Sharif'ud'din's spine and he left her throat. Bakshi turned and left the room, leaving behind an intoxicated Sharif, who somehow knew that every word she said yelled "truth.
