After reading about your experience in USA I was thinking, I have heard from my aunts and relatives who came over 30 - 40 years back in this country said similar stories of settling down here. Some of my aunts didn't speak English at all and they even had the language barrier. How they coped and learned and some even landed themselves good jobs is amazing to hear. 😃 This is also the reason why Jhumpa Lahiri wrote Namesake based on her parent's life and the life of Indian community back then.

Luckily when I came there were calling cards which I used to buy in bulks to call up India. Luckily now we have the internet, WA and Skype. 😃

Yes I came in 1992! Me and my husband met in our town, within an hour we had our engagement (Saturday) and next Saturday was the wedding! So I had no idea what was going on, happened so fast. I leave my family, get on the plane alone for the first time in my life, traveling thousands of miles! After arriving in the US, I stayed home for few years. Used to sit near the window and cry everyday as I missed mom and my family😭 But everything changed once I started driving, I never looked back!

AT&T used to charge $4/minute and lot of times the call would drop 😕
