Lashy as far as I know people of royalty and nobility used to watch such fights being performed in front of them in an arena but they didn't themselves perform! 🤔 They would cheer, enjoy and then reward the winner!! Khud jaake akhaare mein do do haath nahi karta tha!! They maintained their dignity, social strata, and class!! This type of instances were popular and all over our country and we read many instances about them. In foreign literature, we find instances of nobility sorting affairs out by duelling! But knowing you, I know you will have a big cause for putting up a scenario like this! 😉 So as usual will w&w to read about it. 😃

Lana - that's why I put the line in brown na... that commoners used to indulge in different kind of sports and royals in different kind of sports... And the teaser only said Mahendar challenged him - it didn't say how! 😉

Arre... of course, kings used to indulge in sports - whether in India or the West. (It didn't mar their social strata if they played - in fact, it was considered a matter of aan baan shaan if their leader - be it, king/prince could play indoor/outdoor games! Mahendar is doing nothing out of the ordinary or wrong by challenging another contender to a game here😕 )

E.g. This is a painting of Shehenshah Jalaluddin Akbar playing polo - look at the royal insignia and the audiences him cheering on!

And it is King Henry VIII's love for the sport jousting that led him to have an accident during one of the tournaments in which he participated - causing him a permanent cripple in his leg from his youth...

Lashy I know what you mean! But this method of showing off the brawns in middle of the arena by the Indian royalty themselves I have not heard of. 🤔 They often sat and enjoyed watching the brawl, made a bet on one of the participants but usually never participated themselves! That is what I know and I may be wrong!

In English and European Literature, I know the royalty participated often but along with their peers and equals, not below their social strata!! Sorting out with duels is pretty common all over the Chaucerian/Marlowe/Shakespearean age, Medieval age and Romantic age!!

Polo was and is an elegant game and yes, royalty themselves played and participated. So was archery or hunting! I am not talking about commoners but both Mahendra belongs to royalty and AMK now belongs to nobility, that is why just fighting it out with the power of muscles in the dirt and dust midst of commoners seemed a little surprising! That is all! But I am sure there were exceptions where some royalty wanted to face it all themselves and participated with the common mass but usually there was always a class differentiation between royalty and common people! This is what I have read in all forms of literature but I have not done thorough research like you. 😃
