Okay! 😆Btw, for a change, why don't you write a small review for this story once along with these small snippets? 😆 I am okay with small one, but I would love to read. 😆
"Jo bhi main kehna chahoon
Barbaad karen alfaaz mere
Alfaaz mere...
Though it was only a tune of humming, yet even a melody-less person like Jalal had to appreciate the singer. The singer was standing alone beside a big peepul tree near the boundary wall of the garden, both Jalal and Jodha went there.
"Maan? Jodha put her hand on her shoulder. "What are you doing alone here?
This sudden touch brought Maan back to reality. When he talked back, there was an uncanny gloominess in his voice never heard before. "Oh Di, you! He smiled casually then looked at Jalal, his smile broadened. "Then ACP sahab, what about the investigation? There was a strange sharp sting in his innocent question. Jalal smiled in back. "You sing well. He commented instead of answering.
"Thanks! Maan's smile was awkwardly sarcastic. "Well, I am happy that I still didn't lose my usual sense of melody even after living in this house. The other people of this house have become robot only! They only know to nod their head after every instruction, and can run behind money and property all the times... He suddenly looked at Jalal. "You know Jalal-Bhaiya, My mother was an excellent singer once upon a time. She hardly hums a tune on her own nowadays!
Both of Jalal and Jodha could not tell a word. Jodha only exhaled a deep agonized sigh. After a short pause Maan started talking again. "I had wished... I had hoped against hope that after this accident the curse from this house will go forever! But... He sighed.
"About what curse are you talking about Maan? Jalal asked in a mild tone. Maan laughed suddenly.
"Was Mr. Bharmal Singh less than a curse for this family?
"Maan! Jodha tried to reproach her brother in a low tone. But Maan laughed harder. "Do you deny this, Di?
Jodha said nothing but closed her eyes only. Maan suddenly held Jalal's hand. "Why are you wasting your valuable time and energy to investigate this incident? If you were not here, none would have bothered to find the murderer. That Inspector Sahani would have shouted for two-three days then everything would have been as-it-is. Why you are so much interested in this case? He told kinda desperately.
"I have to do this as I consider this as my duty, Maan. Besides, the place where the case is standing now, I can't leave it in between. Jalal smiled deeply. "But it seems you don't at all want your father's murderer to be caught.
"No I don't. I told you earlier that I am happy with his death. Maan told with a strange gravity in his voice.
"Do you know anything which you are hiding from me, Maan? Jalal asked.
Maan gazed at him for some moment, his lips trembled, but then instead of telling anything he suddenly laughed again. "You are asking if I am hiding anything from you or not! Mr. Khan, how much do you know at all that I need to hide anything from you?
"What do you mean? Jalal frowned.
Maan smirked. "I don't think it's necessary to tell you; you're intelligent enough to understand... However, it's not too tough to guess how nasty and filthy person my father was!
Jalal observed Maan from his head to toe. He was staring at him with his bright eyes shining in a taunting smile.
"We all know that our father was not a good person, Maan. Jodha said after a while. "But this does not mean that it gives someone the right of killing him. There is a constitution in our country. There are police, court, certain laws and regulations. Everyone has no right to take the law in their hands.
Maan started giggling again. His giggle slowly converted into laughter. "Constitution! Law! His laughter was increasing... "Di, believe me, your law does not have that capacity to gain justice
"You do not have faith on the power of law, Maan? Jalal asked.
Maan stopped laughing, then looked at Jalal. There was a sting of amusement in his eyes which pinched Jalal. "No.
"So what do you believe in? Jalal smiled a bit. "Revenge?
"A tooth for a tooth, an eye for an eye... Maan's voice mixed with the darkness.
"Well I too believe this. But if every single man starts taking revenge on their own, the whole system will be destroyed. We are civilized humans, we have to maintain certain standard rules and regulations for a healthy society.
"Maybe... Maan smiled sarcastically. "So, wish you all the best in this mission of securing a healthy society'! That utopic dream can demand the tears of numbers of innocents, what's the big deal! He then pierced Jodha with his eyes. "The hand of law is not that long, Di, that it can penetrate in a rustic village like Madhubani, and show the power of justice!
"What do you mean Maan? Jodha dug a bit. "What's going on in this village?
"I believe you people are aware of that by now... Maan smiled.
"You know a lot Maan, share those with us. Jalal asked sternly. But his stern voice made no impression on him. Maan smiled again, this time more heartily.
"What I know, is completely my guesswork. I believe you people have a lot of clue in your hands, so my statements will make no sense. All I can say is, he lowered his voice. "There is a lot of khichidi in the farm.
"How do you know that, can you give us the idea?
"These news float in the air, Di... Maan laughed. "If you would stay here, you would have known everything. Then he sharpened his eyes... "The way Surya Bhaiya knew everything...
Jodha and Jalal looked at each other. Maan looked at his watch.
"Too late of night. I am going, bye... He smiled at Jalal. "I have no idea about crime and detections etc, but still I will like to give y0u a tip... He winked. "Dig the past, you will see the present.
He was going in, Jalal called. "Maan?
Maan turned back.
"You generally sleep late of night, right?
Maan smirked. "You are right, Jalal Bhaiya. I had hidden something from you. At the night of the murder I was awake, and I had heard something.
Jalal stared at him, did not reciprocate.
"I heard some unnatural noises in the room, like sounds of windows, or disturbed footsteps, and maybe also a very mild sound of scream, which I had ignored thinking my mistake. It was nearly 12-12:30 that time, and there was a load-shedding so I did not bother to go and see. Maan yawned. "Sorry for not telling you these, hope it helps further. Bye, spend a nice time...
Both of them gazed at Maan for some time. "Maan's attitude is just like my father; however, it seemed he knows many things. He himself declaring that he knows many things, but he is hiding those from us himself? Jodha uttered.
"Strange boy! He wants us to know everything about the farm and the past of this family, but he himself is not willing to tell us anything about it! Rather he is giving clues to me to show that how much does he know? Jalal frowned deeply.
Both of them kept on walking in silence for some time. Then Jalal sighed. "Okay, let's go to sleep now!
"Everything is getting so complicated every day, isn't it? Jodha murmured unmindfully.
"A lot of people are telling unnecessary lies, Jodha! Jalal nodded. "I have to filtrate out those lies from their actual statement, right at tomorrow morning.
Jalal was still in bed as he slept late at night, but suddenly a howl and cry from the hall room compelled the charm of sleep to break. He woke up, pulled the jacket on his sleeping suit and came out to see what's happening while rubbing his eyes. As he was expecting from the voices, Bhagwant and Jaymal was fighting like mad buffaloes, and their respective wives were trying to stop them. Shivani and Sukanya were staring with fear, while Jodha was sipping the cup of tea with utter irritation. Meenakshi was standing behind, there was worried frown in her brows.
"Listen...I am telling you, go away from this place with your wife and stay permanently wherever you want. If you want I will give you some portion of the land of Kishenganj, but don't expect a penny from this property apart from that, understood?? Jaymal groaned.
"Ohh! So after removing me from your path, you are going to eat up everything all alone?? You fraud, thief! You are my father? Bhagwant kept on yelling at the peak of his voice. "Now I understand, it was you who stole the money from account and put all the blames on me!
"Hey listen, don't shout at your father! Whatever I am doing for your good only understood?
"MY FOOT!!! You ordered to unregister my name from the board of authority of the farm for my good?? You were stealing money from the fund from so many days in my name for my good?? Bhagwant was about to crack the roof.
"Bhagwant shhh! I am... I am forbidding! Jaymal grudged sweating profoundly...
"What shhh! I have got to know everything. You had ordered to change and destroy all the records regarding those transactions and also told to remove my name from...
"SHUT UP!! I SAID SHUT UP!!
"Why are you stopping him? Before Jalal could come into picture Jodha commented amusedly. "Carry on, I am enjoying...
"It seems funny to you??
"Why not? Jodha smiled. "I also want to know, what is the reason that you suddenly ordered to remove Bhagwant's name from the board?
"My foot! I didn't do any...
"Oh come on Kaka... Bhagwant cannot lie! Can you, Bhagwant?
Perhaps Bhagwant smelt something fishy, so he got silent.
"Why you tried to change and destroy the records, Mr. Jaymal? Jalal came and sat on a sofa. "I see. You had understood that today we will be searching each and every document of the farm from head to toe and so was trying to clear up all, right?
"What the hell! I did nothing! Bhagwant is hallucinating... He is shouting only as he has been rusticated by brother from the farm, and now is putting all the blame on me! Jaymal protested with all his strength.
"Mr. Bhagwant, what is your reason of putting such an allegation on your father? Jalal asked with a slight smile.
"L...look... I care a damn about whatever is happening in the farm! But today I heard in my own ears that he is ordering someone in the phone to check whether the records are cleared or not... and also to remove my name from the board of directors... He looked excited. "I had a doubt on this man about theft before... and today I am sure; he wants to take all the properties on his own name and so he...
"Why would I, idiot! I am your father! Jaymal shouted.
"Yes, you do have your natural care of a father... and so you tried to remove all the proofs; so that even if anything is proved against the farm, at least your son gets scot-free? Yes or no? Jalal told in a very cold and lazy voice but the other family members got stunned. Bhagwant, who was shouting like a mad buffalo, popped his eyes out.
"And don't worry about the share of properties; as per the will of your grandfather, both of you and your father have no share in the property. Both of you had been only a worker of the farm, that's it. Jalal declared a moment later. Bhagwant looked at him such a way as if he is going to have a heart-attack. All the members of family were shocked as well, but the strangest was Radhika's behavior. "NO! IT CAN'T HAPPEN! She shouted like hysteric.
"So Mr. Bhagwant, don't fret much... Jalal smiled. "I don't know how your father can put the blame of stealing money on you, but I believe today what he was doing was for your good only...
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN! WHAT DO YOU MEAN!! YOU CANNOT INSULT ME THIS WAY! FIRST PROVE ANYTHING AGAINST US, THEN SAY!! Jaymal shouted and got out of the house at once without informing anyone.
Bhagwant, who was a bit shattered after all this, gulped once and was going back to own room, Jalal caught him.
"Mr. Bhagwant, I need to talk to you. He touched his shoulder. "Alone... He emphasized.
"So tell me everything properly Bhagwant. Jalal asked putting his hand on his shoulder. Both of them were at the passage at the entrance of the dining hall.
"Yeah... yeah... look Bhagwant, who was a bit unmindful, emphasized. "I had a suspicion on my father before too, so today at morning I stalk him while he was talking with someone of the farm over the phone. I clearly heard he instructed to remove my name from the records of the board of directors, and also was talking about some other financial transaction records...
"Hmm... I have clearly understood this part, Mr. Bhagwant! I want to hear something new! Jalal stated coldly.
"Wh...what?
"Like... Jalal smiled. "Why did you lie to me when I asked you what you were doing at the night of the murder?
Bhagwant was stunned for a moment, then he reciprocated... "That night? I...I can't...can't remember...
"You remember, Bhagwant. It's only that you don't want to share with me.
"No... Look I was sleeping throughout... I did not open my eyes before I hear the sound from Sukanya's room! Bhagwant said.
"So why did your wife lie, that you were not in the room but in corridor when she got slept? Jalal whipped.
Bhagwant was quiet for a while, then he murmured in a furious tone. "So you think I murdered him???
"Don't I have reasons to think that especially when someone is lying directly? Jalal smiled. "Can you deny that your wife is speaking truth?
"She is... Bhagwant controlled his rage and tongue hard, then looked at him with begging eyes. "I am telling truth... I was there in corridor for a short while, for smoking... It was too much worthless to inform you.
"Is it? Jalal smiled. "You were seriously smoking in front of your uncle's room?
"I... I was at the backside. Bhagwant stammered.
"Then whom did your Aunt see in balcony?
"What the... It was not I of course, it was Surya! Bhagwant was sweating "I... I was never there when... when Surya was there.
"Really? Jalal smiled. "So you were not there when Surya was there?
"No!
"So you were there when Surya was not there, right?
"Yes! I mean... Bhagwant stammered again, feeling he has gone to a wrong turn.
"Okay then say, what were you doing in front of your uncle's room? Jalal frowned.
"Wh...what is the proof that...
"I do not remember any single butt of cigarette on the ground. Had you eaten the butts too, or what? Jalal laughed.
"No... Look... Bhagwant was sweating. "I always throw the butts on the ashtray of my room so...
"So you smoked for almost half an hour, till your wife goes to sleep, and collected all the ashes and the butts together and took them in your room, right? Jalal smiled. "But as per my observation, you have a very bad habit of throwing the butts of the cigarettes here and there in the room. So in that particular night you were practicing to become a good smoker?
"No... I mean... Bhagwant was vicious in tension. "What do you want to prove?
"Very simple. You were not at the backside of the corridor for smoking. You were there for some reason which cannot be shared even with your wife. He picked one brow. "What was that?
"I... I admit I was not smoking... But I have nothing to do with the murder... Bhagwant gulped.
"I believe you had gone to your uncle's room when there was none in the corridor. Why?
Bhagwant's eyes trembled for once, then he replied. "I... I wanted to talk... talk to him...
"About the distribution of properties?
"Y...yes...
"Then, what did he say?
"He... he was sleeping...
"What?
"Yes! Bhagwant looked confused. "Even I was confused to see him asleep so early. Maybe he had his daily dose of sleeping-pills...
"What was the time then?
"Around twelve... I got into his room, and the lights were off just at the time!
"I see! Jalal smirked. "Then?
"I... I was confused as I had no plan... Bhagwant looked clumsy. "Okay, let me tell you from first. Just before that I had a serious fight with Mohini when she was accusing me as a spineless gambler. It was always her idea to claim the portion of my property and go away from the clutch of Tauji and start something new... I was excessively angry, and wanted to solve this matter by hook or crook... Maybe I wouldn't have hesitated to kill that old man out of rage that moment, but when I saw him sleeping and I was cooled down, I could not understand what to do...
"Then you went back? Jalal picked one brow.
"Y..y...yes... Bhagwant wiped out his sweat again.
"I expect you to tell the truth...
Bhagwant stammered a while, then confessed... "I...I got an idea to... to search the cupboards of the room... if I would find something helpful...
"Did you have that courage?
"N...no... he gulped. "I feared that he will wake up. I wasted 2-3 minutes there to decide what to do till...
"Till?
"Till I noticed someone stalking on me...
"Who! Jalal seemed excited.
"I could not understood. It was just a shadow... I followed that, but it disappeared in the dark at the corner of corridor...
"Then?
"Then I did not courage to go to Tauji again, after spending some time alone at the backward corridor I went back to sleep...
"You did not notice anyone at the balcony?
"You cannot see what is going on at the balcony from where I was standing. You can check if you want.
"I see! Do you have any idea about the time then?
"The whole incident must not take more than 10 minutes... I think.
"And the last question... You seriously did not see Surya all the time?
"I suppose he was there in his room. I could sense someone's presence in his room while I was passing. Bhagwant told. "As you know, it does not take half a minute to come to Tauji's room from his room, so maybe he...
"Guessing what had happened comes under my duty, Mr. Bhagwant. Jalal smiled sweetly. "Let me do that... First let me guess if your story of the secret of the shadow is true or not!
"I... I am telling truth...Bhagwant seemed helpless.
"I hope you are. About this, and about your involvement in farm too. Jalal sharpened his eyes. "What do you know about the wrongdoings of the farm?
"Well to be honest... Bhagwant licked his lips in tension. "I know there is a lot of hole, but I never cared... Tauji never took me seriously; same goes to my father also, though he managed to stick to the farm... But I have no idea about what he was going to do today... He swallowed.
He was trying to come out with clear hands, at least to save you from all these, but you the prat pour water in all those plans! Jalal thought. "You may go now. He told while turning back, and was a bit shocked.
Mrs. Radhika Singh was staring at them with her whole body trembling in utter tension.
"Maa?
"Radhika Ji?
Both of them went closer. "Do you want to say something, Radhika Ji?
"I... I... She tried to speak, but could not help due to convulsion. "My... my son...
"Cool down... Jalal looked at Bhagwant. "You go. I will talk to her alone...
"But...
"Go!
Bhagwant left without any further question.
"Well Mrs. Singh! Jalal turned at her.
"My... My son is innocent. Please leave him. He does not know anything!
"Well I can only be sure after my investigation...
"Surya knows everything! Why don't you catch him? Leave my family please!! Radhika urged desperately.
Jalal frowned. "How can you be so sure?
"Me... me... Radhika stammered.
"You were not in your room that night after load-shedding. You husband himself told us. Why did you lie? Jalal whipped his question. It seemed Radhika will faint out of fear now. "Me... I... My... She kept on with her increasing pinch of cry.
"Jalal? Jalal was interrupted. It was Jodha.
"You are here? Mr. Sahani called just now. Post-mortem report has come. He is coming within five minutes here. She informed. "His voice says there is something exciting in the report!
"Ok! I am going to my room to change. Jalal nodded. "Take your Kaki to her room now. Mrs. Singh, keep your nerves in control. I want my answers today only!
"Sir! Mr. Sahani stormed into the drawing hall almost. Both Jodha and Jalal was waiting, they both stood up with excitement in their face.
"Say Mr. Sahani. The post-mortem report was supposed to come today na?
"Yes sir! And after getting that only I rushed to you! The whole story has taken a twist sir!!
"What?
Sahani paused for taking breath for a moment. Then with extra jolt he continues. "Rajasahab did not die because of stabbing Sir! He had been poisoned!
Both of them were shocked like hell... "Poison!Jodha murmured...
Jalal took the report from Sahani's hand. "It says that he had been given an overdose of sedatives, causing the action of nerves to slow down and stop ultimately. There was a deep frown over his eyes. "The time of death is between 4 hours after dinner. Means within 10 pm to 1 am... That's why there was no sign of pain in his face at the time of stabbing! Neither did he shout! I should have guessed this long before! Shit shit shit!! He threw the document on the table disgustedly and sat on the nearby sofa!
"Sir... what to do now? Sahani asked in a confused voice.
"Nothing is going to change for this. We have to keep on investigation like before. We cannot forget that he was stabbed also. Jalal uttered quiet unmindfully because he was thinking about something else.
"The murderer had poisoned him... then why stabbed again?? Jodha questioned desperately.
"Maybe to ensure the death... or... Jalal looked at her. "There is no reason to think that the man who poisoned him and who stabbed him is same person. Maybe two people had planned to kill him simultaneously! he suddenly got up while biting his lips. "How can I be so irresponsible! Mr. Bharmal himself used to take sleeping pills. There should have been the sleeping pills in his medicine box. I did not even notice whether they are there or not!
"Do you think the same pills were used for killing him? Jodha asked.
"Maybe, as no pharmacy sells sedatives without prescriptions so... I will go to the police station right now. Need to check the evidences once more. Come on Mr. Sahani! He looked at Jodha. "You told you will go to the farm today?
"Yes.Jodha told. "I had called chattered accountant Manish Tiwary from Mumbai yesterday. He will be coming today to audit the accounts.
"Maybe after this we will know a lot of unknown things. Jalal nodded. "Okay, let me give you a lift.
