Destiny

The sketch that outlined the map of rajputana and its surroundings lay on d table. Jalal narrowed his eyes as he took a keen look over this map, his acute senses made him ponder upon getting on to the most important state under his Empire if he had to have a control over entire Hindustan and for that rajputana did play the pivotal role in accomplishing his ambition.

There were a few of those small subhas which were marked in red ink indicating that they were under the Mughal Sultanate but this wasn't enough for jalal to sit still and feel contented.

Jalal, however had merely been twenty years old, but still at this age he had come across many life threatening occurrences that had made him learn a lot more than what he would have learnt it in his entire adulthood. This early maturity in his life had made him to look into his men's minds and able to see their flaws and weaknesses and was able to exploit them at their best.

All his mental calculations and assumptions were brought to a standstill when his mother Hamida entered his room.

On seeing Hamida, he instantly stood up on his toes, "Adab, Ammijaan what made you come here if there was something you wanted I would myself come to you, you could have sent me a word..."

His words were cut short by Hamida, kissing his forehead, "Why my dear son, can I not come to meet my you?"

Jalal's mouth twisted with a broad smile, the twinkle in those eyes made Hamida feel elated but soon the smile that had crept on her lips vanished thinking about the news.

The sudden change in her expressions didn't go unnoticed by jalal, "Ammijaan, is there anything serious that is what making you upset", making her sit on the couch he knelt down placing his hand on hers, he asked.

Without going into much depth she chose to straight forwardly let him know for what she was here, "Jalal I want you to know that its time that you are married. You are now twenty years old, a perfect alliance would only go on to strengthening your position".

Hamida was looking at him jubilantly. "Everything has already been planned and arranged well before hand. I sorted out the most of the potential alliances for you and just two days ago the messenger brought some real good news. The alliance which I found it to be one among the best has been accepted.

I want to know my son if you are satisfied with it I do not feel that there would be any reason for you to reject this since I am so sure of it that this strong alliance would only bring prosperity to our Empire".

Jalal looked agape at her as he couldn't come to any terms but simply chose to stare at his mother in utter dismay.

...

There was a lot of commotion and chortlings coming from the harem, especially his mother and other elderly ladies seemed to be excited and could not stop them from talking about jalal's marriage.

Jalal's face bore the marks of sullen and gloomy as he paved across the courtyard from the stables where he had been assessing the horses. He felt impulsive and restless, the royal members married for political reasons and not out of love, the political alliances had always been the ladder to strengthening the roots deepening it more that would make the Empire grow stronger and he knew this since his boyhood.

Jalal was angry, all he could remember was his wedding with his first cousin even when both were as young as eight years old and had absolutely no inkling about its commitments and importance.

Jalal had decided that when the time comes to take a wife yet again he would take his own decision, but it seemed to him that all his plans had proved futile since his mother had already made all the arrangements sneakily.

He felt himself caught in foul play by his mother, but for some time he let it go the feeling of frustration and anger and looked upon this matter with a different prospective.

He saw after ages his mother looked so happy and cheerful after all those torments and mental turmoil she had to undergo for so many years, for now that things were settling for the betterment, he couldn't stop himself from saying no to this alliance.

He could see a silver lining under the dark clouds with this upcoming prospective and at heart he knew he shouldn't reject it.

In a few days of time he had to ride through the rajputana soil passing through some of his subhas and reached Sambhar where the marriage was supposed to take place.

The chosen bride for jalal was Rajkunwari Jodha, the eldest daughter of Raja Bharmal, the ruler of Amer, belonging to Kachhwaha clan.

What would she look like? Would she be the most beautiful princess or the ordinary average looking lass? Jalal shrugged. What mattered was the political aspect and not what the girl looked like, his mother always tried to tell him and if needed he could take some more wives or concubines later.

The gift from the groom's side for the bride had already been sent a set of heavy gold anklets and the necklace studded with diamond and precious stones along with the heavy worked bridal attire. As for his father in law then ashrafis, perfectly matched stallions were been sent.

...

Jalal mounted upon his dark mane chestnut, sensing the zest, the horse jerked and pranced. He felt so good to be back again on the saddle and so jalal patted with fondness on its shinning neck. Well armed men a few in thousands or more or less were made to escort the emperor.

After two weeks or so the caravan of the emperor finally camped at their desired destination, Sambhar.

"Pranam Shenshah" Raja Bharmal folded his hands in a way to greet jalal. Jalal could see his wide cheekbones and broad forehead, dark long eyes that beamed with happiness. He looked to be around forty or more.

"I am Raja Bharmal, the ruler of Amber, I extend a warm welcome as you are my guests but soon you will be my son in law".

Jalal returned him with a smile and nodded. Our encampment is two hours from here and so I was watching and waiting over you so that I can personally come to welcome you along with your family. Jalal kicked his horse and followed Raja Bharmal.

...

The wedding venue looked grand all the necessities were taken care of, the decorations, the lightning; each and every aspect was meticulously looked into. It was supposedly to take place as per the Hindu traditions and customs.

Once jalal had received a warm reception as per the rajput customs his only desire to see the bride grew more and more, though he was least interested to go for this alliance but then now when he had agreed, he looked restless and excited a part of him wanting to have a glimpse of his bride, also he was prepared for the worst not knowing that his bride was equally or so as to say most beauteous ever one could ask for.

On the other hand the bride herself was dressed in her royal bridal attire that had come from jalal as a gift made her look all the way more alluring. She had mixed feelings that were creating havoc in her mind.

Jodha dint know at one point she looked happy but at some point she seemed to be nervous had she been getting married to a rajput prince the feeling could have been mutual and adjusting and knowing the customs and lifestyle wouldn't seemed to be difficult but here she was getting married altogether to a different person coming from a different background, religion and upbringing.

She couldn't say no but definitely she couldn't completely agree with it. A volcano of thoughts and emotional turmoil was bubbling up within her. She will have to face many problems and the tongue twisters from her people and others too. This was the alliance which she was immune to since she had neither any interest nor had any hatred towards him.

Jalal was ready in wedding clothes, the yellow silk tunic and trousers of doeskin with his face covered with sehra. He was now completely decked up in his bridal attire but his mind was yet to come to the terms that he was going to marry a princess whom he had never heard off or more precisely his mother never bothered to discuss a word on the most important issue that was related to his life.

Jalal was in splits he did not know whether he was going in right way or not? As he continued to mull over his thoughts he could hear few voices coming from the corridor he turned towards the corridor to have a look and saw a few of the maids passing by when he heard one of them saying, "Kunwarisa, looks so beautiful Shenshah will fall head over heels for her" the maids poured their hearts out laughing and tittering.

These words tempted him to check on his bride but how, was the immediate question that had come into his mind. He removed his sehra and placed it on the bed and headed towards jodha's room stealthily he assured such that none could able to see him lest he would have to feel embarrassed.

After the huge risk in sneaking, he was able to reach near jodha's room. He could hear the voices of the maids and other ladies and decided to conceal near the entrance and slowly peek in, but in a spur of the moment jodha's mother mainavati appeared and she was taken by a surprise making him halt in his track.

Getting caught red handed that too in such a situation had never brought him a shame but now when he was stuck in this situation he had to think of some idea to come out of it. "Jawaisa, you here?" maina glanced at him with confused expression.

Jalal flushed as he went to think for the answer he was asked for, "S..ssorry n...nothhinggg... I.. I lost my w..wayy and so I... I..."

Maina smiled at his antic and said, "Jawaisa, no need to feel sorry about come this way I will show you.." the golden opportunity he had missed to see his bride and that was all cause of his silliness, jalal fumed.

...

At last it was time for the bride and the groom to reach to the mandapam, maina and other elderly ladies escorted her to the wedding mandapam where the priest was already ready with the hawan kund who seemed to be busy chanting hymns.

Jodha proceeded towards the mandapam as she could see him already sitting there, her slow and hesitative steps, the chiming of her anklets giving a glimpse in between of her slender foot that had been painted intricately with henna, compelled jalal to glance at her who couldn't stop himself but to observe her, the growing nervousness in her was clearly visible to him even though all her feelings remained hidden behind the veil.

He couldn't see her face clearly cause of the veil, for somehow he caught a glimpse of those beautiful large eyes through the transparent veil of hers. The mere glimpse of those orbs made him grow more and restless to see her.

The voice of the priest interrupted jalal's thoughts as jodha by now was seated still next to him. Her mild sandalwood perfume had captivated his senses. The priest asked them to exchange their garlands. As she tried to exchange the garlands he could see her clear white soft skin from beneath her veil.

In between both were stealing glances at each other as they stood up for the saat pheras her skin came in close contact with him sending exquisite shivers through him. He smiled at his own sensations and continued to take the pheras.

Jalal filled her partition with vermillion that marked the end of all the wedding rituals. By now the wedding feast was over. The moon had risen and its cool glow fell upon the earth silvering everything that came under its shimmer.

...

The candles that were lit were now half melted as the palace had fallen into lull and quietude everywhere. Jalal entered the room hesitantly it wasn't that he felt nervous but then he wasn't sure of how his bride would react.

He pushed the hanging beside and approached towards the bed where jodha remained seated. Her face was still covered by the veil and now it was the time that he could finally see her face. His heart jumped with joy knowing this. With this thought he sighed.

Whereas, jodha tightly clenched to the ends of the veil out of anxiety. Her palms perspiring as her veil turned wet with the sweat. She sat still but only seemed to be moving her toes nervously.

Jalal nearing towards her made her go more and more jittery. He came and sat next to her, placing his hand on hers. She curled her fingers instantly out of shyness.

He smirked at her coyness and gently unveiled her face. What he saw had simply left him mesmerized. Her deep brown eyes that had been smeared with kohl defined her dark long lashes, her perfectly oval face and the glow of silk like skin, those full lips and her innocent looks fascinated him.

He could have never guessed that the bride that his mother had chosen for him would be so stunning. His direct gazes made her feel uneasy. She instantly looked down to avoid his gaze.

"Jodha, there is nothing to fear from me" he placed both his hands on her shoulders and turned to face him. Perhaps she was expressing through her eyes many doubts of uncertainty probably of their relationship, for him which he had to answer them.

The moment he pulled his hand she held it by hers own and in a low voice he could hear her murmuring, "I...I need some time to accept this relationship if you..." she said it all in one go.

Jalal squeezed her hands, lifting her chin; he said, "I shall wait till you are ready for it you can take your time" these exact words made her feel comfortable all at once.

She felt at ease letting go all her flurried thoughts and her tensed body relaxed. She gave him a warm smile. Jalal now understood that the choice of his mother's wasn't that bad or so as to say it was the best for him and realized that it wasn't forceful after all it was the destiny that had bound him to her.

The whole night the couple talked about their likes, dislikes from everything to everyone rounding upon their own past moments good or bad. Although the couple dint share any cozy moments on their first nuptial night but it did start with a new beginning, the beginning of their friendship, the dawn of new horizons in their lives and on the entire Mughal Empire.

THE END...

Manasi

My soul was lost,
The time I entered the widest coast.
My heart was drowned,
The time I swam the deepest ground.
Darkness surrounds me, unknowingly...

How can I fight,
If I don't see the light?
How can I go on,
If I feel that I'm all alone?
And how can I be me?
If I already loss myself, unknowingly...

In the middle of this difficulty,
God gave me a great opportunity.
To meet an angel in reality,
Who will stay beside me, till eternity.
I found this friend of mine, unknowingly...

I never thought that we will go like this,
We share our dreams, and do silly things.
I never thought that we will be as this close,
Like real sisters, till the river flows.
I never thought that you could change me,
Because of you, I was healed Unknowingly..

How can I thank God?
For this life time blessing,
It's you, my friend, that keeps my heart beating,
Our friendship that was built in a remarkable way,
Hope we can keep it, till our hairs turn into gray...
Unknowingly.. We will still be the same and will never change.

Here comes the Ides of March!

The day of joy, the hour of merry making for the readers, old and young, for today, in the cradles of Spring, was born the most romantic soul I could've met - what a stunning amalgamation of buoyant humor and hardcore romantic, enormously prolific, yet a friend so cherished... You're the creator's delight! ⭐️

A birthday dedication to the lady more beautiful than Heera, and more passionate than the Khan sahib, for she created them, this is the day when their creator was born...

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her writing and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every penned down phrase,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And in that heart, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

I guess for a woman who is a mother, the most special thing which makes her super happy is something related to her kids but as I cannot post edit of your kiddos here so I decided to make an edit on your baby, Hiding behind a stranger.

Two weeks back, I started learning photoshop so this time I tried making an edit with photoshop. It is not that good and I don't think you or anyone would like it as even I'm not satisfied with it but I spent 4 days on this edit so I would like to say, that please see the love behind this edit and not an edit.🤣

Here:

and I made a picture Vm on Hiding Behind A Stranger.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Ride With Stranger
"Ting!!" Her mobile buzzed with a SMS notification.
"Your booking has been confirmed. Get ready to be picked up!
Reference No: xxx
Driver Name: Muhammad
Driver Mobile Number: xxx
Taxi No: xxx"
"Uff... finally!!" She heaved a sigh of relief and immediately forwarded the SMS to her brother. As expected her mobile rang fetching alluring 'I-know' smile from her. "Bhaiya..." She answered in a hurry and even before the caller responded, "How's your friend, Bhaiya? Are you at hospital now?" she asked.
"Choti, Yes I just admitted him. He's taken to ICU and his cousin is on the way. And tell me where are you now?" A tinge of tension evident in his voice. He would have picked her at station if his friend was well and fit or at least he had another helping hand with him. But now he was tensed and getting restless with the time. He couldn't help but just going to sit in front of ICU, praying for friend speedy recovery and worrying for sister's safety in the wee hours. But thank god we didn't cancel the prior booking earlier made it on one of pioneer and secure Taxi Hailing Service in the town.
"I'm just 5 mins away!" She replied thinking her brother's plight. She and parents went to home-town to attend their village famous chariot procession. One unexpected and undeniable invitation, compelled her to travel alone while parents stayed back.
"Ah Okay. Choti don't step out until the driver call you and wait near to canteen that's the crowed place in the station..." he continued adding instruction, "and check the taxi number twice before get in then don't forget to share the ETA after trip started. So, I can track your whereabouts time to time for my own sanity." She would have teased him to the core if it was another situation. But she knew when to joke and when to obedient.
"Sure Bhaiya, I'll call you after reaching home and I've one spare key so you don't need to hurry. You come home after his cousin arrives. Bye!!" Though she sounded confident, she was having this sick feeling of 'Something going to happen' since morning. Later events only added to her anxiety.
10mins later
She arrived at the location with the guidance of the driver, only to find out a stylist car waiting for her. She checked the number again. It's correct. "Is there any 'SURPRISE BMW DRIVE' promotion going on?" She wondered. "But in this wee hour? Cannot be!!" Sudden flash of not so good news in mind, she felt strange feeling in her stomach. Her heart bounded at extra speed. She took two steps back. Just then, the car door flung open and the driver got down only to freeze her at the spot.
"Ms. Jodha??"
His baritone reverberated as warn in otherwise silence and cold atmosphere. She unconsciously nodded. He then swiftly turned and opened the door for her to get in.
She was totally awestruck by both her response and his handsome. Jitters long gone. There was a warmth in his presence. For a fleeting second, she felt herself as Princess of once upon a time.
Inside BMW
Branded T-shirt. Rolex Watch. Nike Shoe. Intoxicating Perfume. She noted while get in. Neat and tidy interior yet something is different about cockpit. "May be new model!!" She further examined. iPhone7 resting on Car mount holder. A blue light emitting from thick silky locks indicating existence of Bluetooth earphone. Muscular body revealing regular exercises. Leisurely resting right hand on armrest time to time stylishly stroking the chin while left hand on wheel moves so effortlessly. "Uff... He's anything but DRIVER!!"
No questions asked. No mercies showed. No advises passed. He was so used to this kind of gestures from his passengers of previous rides. BUT instead she remained silence which forced him to check her. He looked at her. Through the Rear-view-mirror. Only to meet a pair of squinted eyes. Knitted brows. A piercing gaze totally unbothered by his sudden shift. He then doubted but now confirmed. He was completely under surveillance. His lips automatically twisted and his eyes looked at her again. She appeared innocence, brighten eyes showed intelligence and the face idealized as beauty. Even before he realized staring at her longer than he should have... It's now her turn. Her lips mischievously twisted. "Mashallah... She's something else altogether!" He broke the eye-lock and made the mental note to not look at her again at least for both of their safety.
But she gained confidence to start the conversation with this 'look me - catch me' game. "Is there any 'SURPRISE BMW DRIVE' promotion going on? Because I only booked Mini-cab!" She adjusted herself to right side to closely read his facial expression.
"No Ma'am. It's our boss order to send any available vehicle, particularly if ladies or elders want it at night. But you will be charged for Mini-cab only." He coolly replied.
"But I don't think you will gain much income if you get hires like this..." She sounded worried. He smiled at her concern and replied, "No Ma'am. It's only for prior booking and company will pay us rest of the money."
"Wow!! That's cool and your boss is a great." She appreciated.
"Yes he is!!" His voice mellowed. "Is it affection or admiration? May be both!!" Nothing much to feed her Sherlock brain, she further inquired.
"I wonder how he built this secure network. Is there any SPECIAL QUALIFICATION he is looking for?" She emphasised the word "SPECIAL QUALIFICATION" and sounded mystified.
His funny bones cracked at her indirect question still managed to keep a straight face and went on to answer her, "A driving license, good conditioned vehicle, Police clearance certificate and Biometric information. That's all needed. If they are satisfied, we will be provided a personality training."
"Interesting. So, what's inspired you to become a driver?" She finally asked.
His eyes still fixed on the road but his mind revolving around adorable passenger in the back seat. Yes, he was impressed. She didn't dig his personal like all others did. Still she managed to ask that question in most positive way. He knew she's curious and intelligence. "So, Yes half-truth!"
"My father is a driver, witnessing him going everywhere in variety of vehicles from my childhood, influenced my decision to become a driver." He waited to see her reaction but she lost in somewhere.
"My father is a driver. He used to bring variety of vehicles home and take me for a drive by making me sit on his lap. The feel of going ahead of every passing vehicle, people and fast moving trees always made me happy like conquering every struggle and moving ahead. It had a great impact on me for being speed on everything."
Her brows knitted again. "I've heard something like this, very recent. But from whom? Heard or read?" Couldn't recall anything, she asked "So what else you can drive?"
He's truly stunned. He expected she would laugh at his reply or pity on him but she sounded appreciative. He looked at her. She appeared eager than before with no trace of pity. His eyes affectionately glued to her. Something in his eyes, "Is his eyes familiar??... Idiot!! You saw his eyes just only few minutes before, right?" Cursing herself and unable to meet his intense eyes she looked ahead. But to her horror, "Hey watch there..." she screamed.
"Hold onnn..." He yelled.
Screeechhh...
Vrooommm... whooossshhh...
Screeechhh...
Creeeak... Thud...
Dhuk dhuk, Dhuk dhuk, Dhuk dhuk... "It's my heartbeat. Yes, I'm still alive..." She slowly opened her eyes. He was not there and car was parked on the side of the road. No single scratch on her. No visible damage to car. "How is it possible?" She looked ahead. No trace of vehicles on the road. She then looked behind. Two long container trucks slowly moving on the road and the third one... "My god!! That's the one I last saw" taking deep breaths, she calmed herself. She tried to recall everything.
She saw one iron rod like object blowout from the container into their direction. With no enough space or time to reverse the car, one should take sharp turn and overtake the truck in opposite lane since it's narrow road. Sharp bend, fast moving vehicle on opposite lane and big container hiding almost front view having no idea of how many vehicles ahead... One should take the speed of light and have the strong control over vehicle. And he did it just like that by overtaking three long container trucks. "Wait..." She just then remembered the racing sound of car engine. It's different. "Yes this is sport car and not different design as I thought earlier. This special design well suited for drivers comfortable than the passengers. That means he is..."
"Are you ok?" His voice was now audible enough to gain her attention. She looked up to him.
Those deep black orbs... "Yes I've seen those eyes and read those lines. Not only once but thrice. One when reading the paper, second when giving the paper to Dad and third when Mum packing something... That means he is..."
His worry lines just increased hearing no response from her even after three attempts. "I should have checked her first before went on to alert the driver." No point of waiting further, he started shaking her shoulder and this time he got her full attention. "Jodha... Are you ok?" concern evident in his voice. "You are not hurt, right?" He asked.
His face so close to her, eyes full of concern and intoxicating smell, "My my!!" She then realised the growing concern in his face and his question. "Ah...Ye.. Yeah.. fine... fine... I'm fine." She awkwardly smiled.
"Are you sure?" he asked perplexed.
"Yes yes. I'm fine. We can start." She assuredly smiled. "By the way what's that?"
"It's one iron rod that used to close the doors blown away from container. As the doors got open, now half of the loads off to road. Careless and improper packing." He sounded disappointed. "What if that hit..." She couldn't think further but still she felt the Goosebumps.
Thou he's not sure about her wellbeing, he started anyway and checked her time to time. First time she was in deep thoughts. Second time, she was so into mobile. Third time she was looking at him with eyes full of admiration. "Did she get to know about me?... Whatever... She's fine!!" With sigh of relief, he sped up.
Few minutes later, "Ma'am we've arrived!!" he slowly stopped the car in front of said apartment. "Oh... now Ma'am??!!" Then only she realized the surrounding. Even before, she gathered herself with bags and all, he got down and opened the door for her. "Speed... Speed... Speed on everything!!" She hissed to herself.
Helping her with bags, he gently refused to get the money from her.
"So thank you Mr. Jalaluddin Muhammad for first to bring Formula BMW talent cup to our country and thank you for first to establishing Uber kinda service to our town..." Proudly announcing, she held her Anarkali out from her body with both hands and sweeping one foot behind, she bowed her head.
He was taken back by her cute and sweet gesture. A content smile permanently pasted. Placing his right hand over the heart, tilting his head slightly he blinked his eyes in acceptance.
"But why this taxi driving?" She asked.
"How can I sleep peacefully when a beautiful lady roaming around lonely in wee hours? It's my duty I've to hurry and save her" Watching her look aside and bite her lips, he continued, "Our home is near to station. It's my father strict order to inform home, if any ladies look for service during nights and no taxis available to send. If Dad is not available, I used to go." He proudly stated.
"Wow. Your Dad is so great. So, if anyone identified you?" She sceptically asked.
"Would you be surprised if I say no?" He asked hands on pocket leaning against his car.
"No. This is possible in our cricket dominant country!!" She smiled knowingly.
"Do you watch car races?" he promptly asked thinking how she guessed.
She felt the sudden weight to disappoint him. "I'm sorry to disappoint you but I used to read sport news." She said. Seeing no change in him, she felt immense relief.
"But I don't remember any paper published my picture..." He wondered trying to recall all the articles about him. He couldn't remember his picture being published and he doesn't encourage it, either.
"Your eyes. There was a picture of you wearing helmet standing near the racing car..." She clarified looking straight into his eyes, "And rest, all thanks to Google!!"
"So you were busy investigating my eyes, while I was fretting about you??!!" He exclaimed recalling her numbed behaviour earlier and she started to laugh uncontrollably. Amused by her musical laugh, his eyes glued to her.
Watching affection and admiration showering from his intense orbs, she announced, "Thank you for this adventurous trip. I just loved it." Her face gleamed in delight. He raised his single eyebrow as to ask "Only trip??" and her cheeks slightly coloured as to say "No!!"
Giving away more then she wanted, Jodha promptly asked. "So you won't forget me, right?"
It sounded more threatening than the just a query. "Why so?" Smiling mischievously, he asked her back.
"Because FIRSTS are SPECIAL and I'm the one first to identify you." She eagerly said.
"Who told you that FIRSTS are SPECIAL?" He teased.
"My favourite writer. She's a wise lady." She impatiently answered.
Seeing her impatience and security guard peeping out, he straightened his body. Looking straight into her eyes, he said, "Yes agree... FIRSTS are SPECIAL and whoever said is wise too!!", taking out his right hand from the pocket, "And you have my number. Call me anytime if you want such rides... I'm all eager and ever ready for your service, Ma'am!!" saying so, he sealed the promise with his stylish 'Adaab' added with special reserved captivating smile and mischievousness in eyes.
Already cool freeze not enough, now his coolest gesture made her froze at her spot. Lovingly watching his car vroomed to life and roared off down the road, she thought "If you're having sick feeling of 'Something going to happen', always doesn't mean something bad. It can be enticingly good as well"
"It's not until you fall that you fly
When your dreams come
Alive you're unstoppable
Take a shot, chase the
Sun, find the beautiful" Her mobile's default ringtone timely rang as if agree. She mischievously smiled to herself thinking of the lyrics.
DivyaM
Dear writer-e-khaas aka Lashy aka Shraddha,
Happy Birthday once again! I wrote this story as it was you who always encouraged and inspired me to write. It is very simple, likely a bit naive fairy tale. My characters are not based on Jodha / Akbar, but hopefully you will still enjoy.
And, on your insistence, I post here.
Best,
Divya
The Music of Silence
A Silent Excitement: "Chup Tum Raho Chup Hum Rahe" (You are silent, I am silent)
I found my thoughts startled by the new shine coming from my hand- the ring, I had not quite gotten used to. My engagement ring.
It was a "perfect" engagement to a family friend I had known for years. There could really be no one nicer, hardworking, and respectable than Mahesh. "Everything is perfect, I will have a dream marriage", I assured myself for the umpteenth time. "Or, at least it should be," rumbled a distant, yet growing misgiving.
As I sat on my usual seat on the 442 bus, I felt a shadow return, that had been with me for a full 2 years. I looked up and around but found nothing close to those twinkling, humorous eyes. I felt I knew everything about him. His laughter, that entertained many a fellow commuter that travelled along the same bumps of life every day. His hearty yet gentle voice. His smile. The way his hair curled on a rainy day. I knew everything about him. Except his name, except where he lived, except where he was now. And, why did any of that matter now?
Yet, that day, 3 years ago was still vivid. My first day of college Delhi University. Maybe I had always gotten my emotions confused from that day- was it the excitement of going to a great Chemistry program on scholarship or did my heart really flutter when I first saw him? As I looked up from the din and busy landscape outside my window, there he was. What made him stand out? Was it the crisp white shirt? His pleasant demeanor? The way he chatted away with the tired old man next to him as if they were long lost friends? Something very touching about it, to me at least.
And as fate would have it, for the next year, almost every day we were on the same bus. Usually, I got on at the earlier stop and always had a seat. He was standing at a distance, as by the time he got on the bus it was literally overflowing with passengers. I often noticed myself smiling at him- faintly overhearing his joke, seeing him help an elderly lady get on board, and in general trying to spread cheer where most others looked half-awake in their dreary morning commute. I called him Mr. Nice. And who cannot like a Mr. Nice?
And what did this Mr. Nice do other than just be nice? One day, I was in closer view of his badge and squinted a bit as I tried to get a view. He was turned the other way, or so it seemed. His badge was caught on the side of his laptop bag and turned towards me. "Inform ... " were the first few letters I saw, as the handle of his bag came in the way. And slowly the handle moved out of the way, and I could see the full name - "Informatica." Interesting name. When I later looked it up, I would find it was an interesting company as well, a rapidly growing software start-up. However, his name eluded me; my eyesight was not that sharp to see the smaller letters of his name from such a distance.
I had been tracing the letters on the badge so intently, that I had failed to see that his grinning face had been observing me. He had noticed me staring at his badge. Not only that, he had moved the bag handle to give me full view of the company name. As I realized I had been caught, my face turned a shade of pink, or maybe it was completely red. I tried turning away to the company of the window, but it was too late to completely ignore. I returned a weak smile. He mouthed a "Hi" as we were too far apart for a true conversation. He seemed to say his name too - "Hi, I am ..." Rajan, Rohan, Soham? What was it that followed? I couldn't understand the most important part of what he was saying- his name. And so Mr. Nice was the name that remained as his bus stop arrived soon after.
And, then who could forget the next day. It was an extremely crowded day on the bus, more than usual. Even I couldn't find a seat, though I boarded the bus at one of the earlier stops. I was standing on one side and he entered. There were only five people standing between us. Five. The old lady was offered a seat. A special thanks to that teenager that offered her the seat as he got off the bus. Four. The distracted student got down at another college stop. Three. The warm old professor also got down. At least his glasses made him seem like a professor. Two. An anticipation arose within me as another young woman departed. There was a man yapping away on his cell phone between us. Was there a way to start a conversation around him? Not really. Finally, he had some had phone reception issues and squeezed through closer to the window. And I was in front of him. I cleared my throat thinking of just saying "Hi."
Screech. Halt. Jerk. Instead, I screamed "Aaah" as I began to fall to my side as the driver slammed the brakes suddenly. As I had moved closer towards Mr. Nice, I didn't realize how precariously close I had come to the entry steps of the bus. A shock rushed through me. I felt I would not only fall out of the bus myself but also push the folks on the steps off. They were trying to hold me up as well. Suddenly, I was on stable ground. Deep breath, sigh of relief. His hand pulled me up. In a split second, everything was back to where it was except I was still a bit shaken. Two ladies hovered around me, making sure I was okay. I wish I could have pushed them aside as I saw him get off the bus for his stop. As he got off, I hoped he would turn - a faint hope that the "Palat" moment of DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge) may come true here. And, it did. I saw those warm eyes look back at me for an instant. A smile erupted on my face and I mouthed a "Thank You." But, I wished to say so much more. He nodded, smiled, and turned to continue with his day. That smile was the last I saw of Mr. Nice. He never came on that bus again for close to two years.
A Silent Sadness: "Kitni Baatein Yaad Aati Hain" (So many moments come to my memory)
He was somewhere lost to me in the hustle and bustle of Delhi - one of the crores around me. Where would I ever find him again? A few weeks after his sudden disappearance, I had an uneasy feeling. A knot somewhere inside that something bad had happened to him. Later that day, I googled "Informatica"- the only clue I had about him. Immediately, I got my answer. The company had shut down! That explained it. He had lost his job! I felt terrible but helpless. What could I do? I had no clue who he was, how he was, and what he was going through. How did such things happen to nice, cheerful person like him him. A sadness lingered.
But soon it dispersed, at least on the surface, with the hustle and bustle of college days. Chemistry lab, Annual Cultural Programs, dinners with friends, tension of exams, and what little free time I had, I spent with family. And now, I was embarking on my senior and final year.
I also found myself embarking on another new facet of life. A visit of family friends, turned quickly into a marriage proposal, turned quickly into an engagement. I had known Mahesh for years. There was little reason to say no to marry him. My parents were also keen. He was a computer engineer doing well for himself. He was extremely nice as well. He had always encouraged me- I still remember my first Cultural Programme, I had been very nervous to sing in front of a large crowd. It was Mahesh who had encouraged me then. He knew how I sang since a kid and knew my talent. He also was very supportive of me doing my masters in Chemistry after I graduated. It was indeed perfect in every way.
Yet, there was the "what if" that tormented me. "What if" I had had the chance to talk to him? "What if" I had seen his name? "What if?" I knew it was ridiculous. So, what if he had been a familiar face for a year? I barely knew him. Then, why was I still stuck in his thoughts and his memories? Why had he left such an impression on me?
Screech. Halt. Jerk. The bus braked again. My face slightly colored as I remembered how he had held my hand that day. Now, as the bus suddenly stopped, I just jolted forward slightly in my seat. My thoughts and memories may have been jolted more.
There was a bustle of whispers across the bus as we continued to be stopped. But, why? Usually, the bus stayed at the stop for a minute or two. The traffic didn't seem to be so abnormally bad that the driver had to slam his brakes. Finally, the news traveled from a passenger reporting from the front. A car had stopped in front of the bus blocking the way. As I peeked at the car, it was a brand new BMW- the same color as my favorite blue, a color I wore often.
In the jerk, my notebook had slipped away and I bent to grab it. Instead another hand reached for it. It looked familiar. And, I didn't have a habit of remembering hands. So, how? My puzzled thoughts startled me as I looked up. And there was that smile, as infectious as ever. The hand that had reached out to me then, was now reaching for my notebook. Soon, I was glowing with the same smile as if I had found a long lost ... now, what was the word?
And what was the sudden world I was lost in? That was until the normal world returned- an exasperated driver honking, a conductor blowing his whistle, and an impatient buzz amongst my fellow passengers. My face flustered red.
I had very rarely heard his voice in close quarters- that may have been the first time. He gently asked, "If it is okay, can you step out of the bus for a moment?"
No, I would be late for a chemistry lab face-off, my team would be livid. No, I had never gone with a stranger anywhere. No, I had never gotten off anywhere except my bus stop. No, I had never gone alone with a guy, not even Mahesh. That was my usual mind chatter. But now, all that was brushed aside. With a slight nod, I followed him off the bus. What was I possibly expecting? I don't know. Neither did the poor delayed passengers of the 442 bus, who watched with a mix of curiousity and raised eyebrows. After all, their mornings may have been completely disrupted. The bus and their faces soon departed.
Finally, only I was there and he was there. An awkward silence followed, finally he started, "I don't know how to start." What a start. But, at that moment I smiled and my smile must have told him something. It gave him a slight shot of confidence to continue, "I don't know how to quite say this, but for some reason I have not forgotten your face since the first day I noticed it." A blush forced my eyes to the ground. How could I say that I felt exactly the same. I probably didn't have to.
He continued, "I know it probably sounds ridiculous, but somehow those few moments I saw you every day ended up being very special. You might remember that day, when you almost fell ..."
Oh, did I remember and my face clearly showed it as he said. "I was planning to talk to you the next day. But, then suddenly I lost everything, my ..."
As his voice trailed off at the painful memory, mine had to come back with an assurance. I whispered,"I know." It was his turn to be surprised- very pleasantly. That I had cared enough to know, it meant something. It said even more.
"I don't know how to explain it, but it felt like I really had nothing left. How do I explain ...," he paused. He didn't really have to and I shook my head showing that I needed no explanation. So, not dwelling on that phase anymore he moved on, "It took a while, but finally I found an amazing gig. Even better than my old one. It some ways, it was meant to be I think."
I could only smile in his happiness, but a question lingered, "Where were you all this while?" I quietly asked. He shook his head, "I know. I did do a disappearing act. But, I didn't really know what I was doing or what I would say."
A question remained in my eyes, which he answered, "After I got my job, I was tempted to come on the bus and meet you. But to be honest, and you may think me weak for this, I still wasn't sure of myself or where I was going."
And one final question from me, "And now?" His signature smile got even broader, "Today, is a special day. You could say I hit a jackpot of sorts. My company did an IPO. I happened to be one of the early shareholders and it paid off. More than I would have ever imagined."
Of course, I always knew that nice things should happen to nice people. It wasn't too surprising, but seeing his happiness, my smiles also knew no bounds. He shared something even more special," When I joined my new job I told to myself, I will come meet you the day I could bring you out of the hustle and bustle of the bus. When I had a car of my own."
He had noticed how I had always been smiling and cheerful, no matter how hot and stuffy the bus was. How I would offer the seat to the old Parsi woman whenever she came to meet her grandson. How I would sometimes get pushed around by some less-than-polite fellow traveler. "Yet, your smile and laugh was aways there. Though there was one guy who provoked me enough that I wanted to give him a little punch," he admitted.
Wow. I never had never felt so beautiful before. As special as how he described me those few minutes.
Wow, before anything else sunk in I wanted to cherish that moment. It felt beautiful- that he had wished, persevered, and worked so hard to get a car with the hope that I would one day ride in it.
That he wanted to be able to bring that comfort and luxury into my life. Could anything feel more beautiful? Could anything be more touching? And all, for a girl whose smiles and cheer he had noticed on the bus? Was this real?
And slowly my attention went to the car standing next to him. The BMW! Of course, it was his! And the color? He answered again before I could ask, "I was wondering what color to buy, but then everytime I pictured you, I saw only this blue." Of course, why wouldn't he? I wore it almost every other day.
Oops, an important question I had forgotten,"I meant to ask, what is your name?"
"Rohan. The name is Rohan. You missed it that day didn't you Meera." We both remembered with a laugh the day I had tried so hard to stare at his badge. Rohan. It had been one of the names I had guessed.
Wait, how did he know? How did he know my name? I looked in surprise. He seemed to know everything. Well, I may have missed seeing his name badge, but he had caught my college card one day. Meera Rajvanshi , Delhi University. Those clues seemed to be enough, and he had figured out quite a bit about me courtesy of Facebook, Google, and he had even read my "Women in Chemistry" blog.
Now it was my turn, I had to find out about him. I had it a bit simpler, I could just ask him directly. No online investigations needed. Rohan Mehra, Product Lead at Pyramid. Ah Pyramid, even my dad had mentioned the IPO yesterday. He had bought a few shares. If he knew, I knew an early shareholder ...
But, yes, Rohan also knew about the engagement. I hadn't posted the picture, but Mahesh had. Still, something made Rohan come to talk to me when he had gotten his first car. He had told himself he would and decided to come, knowing very well nothing may come out of it. He had decided to take a chance on something he had read in my silence. It was the same thing I had read in his silence as well. As he would often say, "Sometimes you just know."
A Silent Happiness: "Khamoshiyan Gungunaane Lagi" (Silence Begins Singing / Humming)
And so began a ride, in his BMW to begin with. I still had to get to college, I reminded myself, no matter what new silliness had taken over me.
You may wonder what happened to next? It was a bit complex- but after a few weeks, I first told Mahesh. It wasn't easy but it had to be done. Somehow, or maybe I shouldn't have been surprised, he understood. Mahesh knew we had always just been friends. The parents were a bit of a different story, but they eventually came around after a few months. The Pyramid name, or rather the aura around it, may have had a role in getting my father to come around as well. Jokes apart, all's well that end's well.
And who said silence is not musical? It was the most magical music that ever came into my life and brought Rohan into my life with it. For me, there couldn't be a more beautiful melody than that music of silence.
Glossary of Songs (Inspired to include a glossary): As with all my stories, this story is inspired by music, a medley of songs. The three songs are:
1. "Chup tum raho, Chup hum rahe" from the Movie: Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin
2. "Kitni Baatein Yaad Aati Hain" from the Movie: Lakshya
3. "Khamoshiyan Gungunaane Lagi" from the Movie: One Two Ka Four
