Akka,
Which rituals had been completed? Only the muh dikhayi and the offering of gifts from the groom's side. Come on! Don't tell me marriages are not broken off at this stage, usually over a disagreement over the dahej! Why would she have to go ahead with the marriage regardless because of this aspect?
I agree with you that Jodha's sharts were made on the spur of the moment. But Jalal does not know this. He would very likely see it as a plan on her part as a last ditch game plan to stymie him by
- either getting him to back off on his own, in which case she would escape him, and he would lose face or
- forcing him to adopt the kind of brutal strong arm methods Munni ha has outlined to whip her into line.
Assuming that he will not back off on his own, Jalal, not being short of grey cells like the love-to-be of his lifeđ, would have to provide for 2 possible outcomes.
One, that he prevails because of the aforesaid strong arm methods. In that case, his name would be mud across Hindustan and any hope of co-opting the Rajputs would be gone with the wind.
Two, that Jodha might, seeing her last ditch ploy fail, commit suicide in despair. Then, as I have outlined to Munni above, Jalal would have been in a very bad situation whether he then attacked and destroyed Amer in revenge or not.
We might know that Jodha had accepted the marriage to save Amer.Jalal cannot be sure of anything about such a firebrand. He probably sees the sharts as a last ditch attempt by her to get out of the marriage, failing which she might, given her temperament, to just about anything. He cannot risk that. So he agrees.
See, Akka, how this penchant for debating makes me break my own resolutions! To ward off further temptation - my hands are aching as it is - I shall now desist and go offline. Bye for now!
