I am not so floored that Akbar attracted the attention of the western world. Personally i feel it is too much of a colonial hangover to seek western approval. But it's not surprising in Akbar's case because he was the 4th richest ruler in history and obviously could not be overlooked.

Coming back to the poem, it is a clever rendition of the incident. It shows Akbar as the benevolent ruler, which he was to the vast majority of his empire. There are other sources which say that Akbar went about in disguise to learn about the problems of his people first-hand. So it would appear natural that once he learned that a bridge was of greater need for the people than a mosque, he was all for it.

Which brings me to present times. I mean, we would rather pour litres of milk over our Gods than give a cup of milk to a poor, hungry child. Is it merely sufficient to laud such incidents from the past if we do not implement that in our life?

This is such a beautiful story that it needs to reach out to everyone - from those in power to the common people. Service to humanity is service to God.

I just want to know if it is a part of an epic or is it written about this particular incident only. Anyhow , the poem stirs the heart, when we read it. I can imagine the whole scene with Jalal in disguise and with the claw marks inflicted by the widow of the potter on his cheeks!

The Jodha connection was there earlier too. Didn't Jodha appear in Mughal-e-Azam?

Those who wish to believe in the Jodha-Akbar relation will do so, those who don't want to will never do so. I think we should just let people be happy with what they want to believe in.

Do you have any idea about how Jodha was portrayed in this film? The central character who inspired Akbar seems to have been the potter's widow, played by Ms. Narayana. Btw, this lady is an accomplished classical dancer and, if i am not mistaken, she was / is (?) in the foreign services too?

The theme of the film is excellent - it shows the rationalist side of Akbar who was ever ready to put his people's needs above religious practices. This lesson is as vital today as it was then. I don't know if this incident is real but it is something that we need to remember today also.

You are right - DD shows good programs but we have got out of touch with DD :( Pls do inform me if a good documentary is to air on DD. Thank you in advance :)
