PART 8

18th October

SEMINAR HALL - THE SEATS

It'd been more than an hour since the first round of contests had started off. Not surprisingly, ISB - the top management university in Hyderabad - was still leading. However, Sri Rama Krishna had been close on its heels all through. With six of the ten teams now eliminated, it was barely a matter of time before the final round would come to its end - thus revealing the winners of the 2013 Inter-collegiate Business Debate Symposium!

While all eyes were on the eight engrossed participants seated on stage then, Jodha continued to primarily observe one certain debonair senior.
The fact that HE stood out despite being surrounded by the most 'exclusive' of the lot was something even SHE couldn't refute - not then, not before. Nevertheless, that day there were certain other things about him that seemed to surface too - be it his knowledge of current affairs, his quick-witted arguments, his elan or his confidence!
She let out a sceptical smirk 'Maybe Maan wasn't being totally partial towards his friend when he'd said that the Ipad Man wasn't ALL THAT BAD?'

On that note, she was compelled to wonder what this 'organized freak' thought of her - seeing how he'd always caught her in some crisis or the other! Her inadvertent thoughts flew back to the awkward twenty minutes she'd somehow spent with him - her semi-clothed self cooped up in that green room with him on the other side of the door. The recollection made her wince in mortified agony for the nth time 'Urgh ...how embarrassing...that a stranger..a guy had to guard my room till my clothes arrived ...if mama came to know of what had happened, she'd have a mini-heart attack!'
Still looking ahead, she studied how he'd just concluded the debate with an exceptional set of arguments. She knew it'd be too much to ask that she NEVER faced him again. So, she only wished their next encounter - wherever and whenever it'd be - be 'bearable'!

'He's cute, isn't he?' her friend suddenly interrupted her thoughts with a subtle nudge
'Huh?' Jodha turned to face Payal - somewhat lost
'MAAN...he's really cute yaar...'
'Oh, Maan?'
Payal's face lit-up in part-realization 'What do you mean 'Oh, Maan?'...were your gazes fixed on someone else, then?'
'What? No!' Jodha refuted in semi-annoyance 'NO! Shhh...look ahead... the results will be announced soon...looks like we may have a good chance of winning...'

2013 INTER-COLLEGIATE BUSINESS DEBATE SYMPOSIUM - THE CONCLUDING CEREMONIES

The dignified uproar hadn't ceased for more than fifteen minutes now. Students from all represented universities clapped in unanimous appreciation as the winning participants were being awarded their certificates and medallions. ISB had been declared the winners and Sri Rama Krishna Institute the 1st runners up - the difference only by a few points.
While their university had always managed to make it within top five, coming in at 2nd place was still a rare feat! Therefore, not surprising that all members of Institute were revelling in relentless joy!

'Come on...let's go and congratulate them' Payal reiterated as she stood up from her seat - watching the groups that were gradually beginning to disperse towards the exit of the hall
'Yup...let's go' Meera added, picking up their bags and belongings
What! Jodha was taken aback - she hadn't expected they'd want to meet the winners personally! Well, she was in no frame of mind to meet HIM after what she'd just been through, especially not amidst such a large gathering.
'Ermm...why now?' Jodha tried stalling 'Its too crowded now...dekho tho...'
'What do you mean?' Meera was puzzled 'Don't you want to wish them? Everyone's wishing them...' she paused 'Don't you want to thank him?'
'I do...but, maybe...some time later!'
Noting her friends' puzzled frowns, Jodha let out a uncomfortable sigh and looked away. She was in no mood to give any further explanations.
Following a brief clumsy spell of silence between the trio, Payal decided to take matters into her own hands. Abruptly grabbing her unwilling pal by the wrist she started dragging her away 'Come on Jo...let's wish them now...even if you don't want to, I WANT TO!'

SEMINAR HALL - ON THE DAIS

The scenes on the dais and about were quite chaotic - what with the finalists being swamped by photographers, staff and students alike. Having swam through various such clusters of juniors and seniors, her group had finally made it to the steps of the stage too. All along, her ongoing protests had had no effect - making Jodha pretty certain by then that Payal's eagerness to wish them was only so she could avail a chance to meet Maan at close quarters.

Throwing her friends a couple of irked glances as they mounted the dais, Jodha checked out the lively scenes ahead with a wary frown. Flanked by the usual faces, Jalal and Maan seemed to be at the receiving end of a LOT of recognition and praise from all quarters. After all, they'd exceeded everyone's expectations that day. However, it was also quite apparent that they took pleasure in hogging all that extra attention!
Noticing how a couple of charming ladies in their 'perfect' suits and their 'exaggerated' smiles chatted with the two young men, Jodha couldn't help but scoff the male psyche. How could it be that every time she'd met him, he was entertaining a new set of females?

Prodded by her pals, Jodha reluctantly walked on - forcing a smile as she passed by Prof Ram Charan and Prof Shantaram who were on their way out. No sooner than they'd reached the boisterous assembly of seniors, their raucous laughter and excitement evidently dropped down a few notches.

Increasingly flustered about the impending encounter, Jodha took her fair share of time to look up - to meet eyes with the man, who by then had stepped forth to greet the new arrivals.
Wow! So, she'd come to meet him? SHE? He was surprised and pleasantly so. The cordial beams on his face took no time to metamorphose into a softer grin - the mischievous kind - the one that seemed to be reserved for HER more and more lately. He hadn't expected her arrival, but now that she was there his gazes had to give her a swift head-to-toe once over - especially to observe the tell-tale suit that'd gone 'amiss'!

Her uneasiness showed. For someone who always submitted to the 'salwar' dress code, this tailored suit was not exactly comfortable. Yet; while she was no Kingfisher Supermodel in that attire, it was that very discomfort that brought about a quirky charm to her personality - something not many others could replicate!

'Hello' he broke the odd bout of silence between the two parties that had gone on long enough
'Congratulations' the affable Meera spoke first
'Congrats...' Payal chipped in - obviously bursting to get into the conversation 'You guys were amazing...BOTH of you' she grinned at Maan as she said that last bit, who was quite happy to return the favour, of course!
'Congrats' her words came eventually 'Both of you!'

He waited a few seconds for her to go on. However, seeing how nothing was to follow he decided to prompt her 'Jab fursat mile tho araam se thanks bol dena!'

Damn! Her face instantly became a deep shade of crimson as she stared at him in distress. She would have thanked him later when he was alone. Why did he bring it up then, in front of his friends? Obviously, to berate her - and to think she'd nearly concluded he wasn't ALL THAT BAD!

With neither of the two quiet starers explaining anything, one of his amused classmates spoke up for the rest 'Why Jalal? Why the thanks?'
'Yes...please enlighten us too...' Renu added curiously - observing their silent exchanges

Meera and Payal stared sympathetically at Jodha, who was clearly unhappy now. The LAST thing she wanted was for the disgraceful incident to come out in the open! Unsure of how he was going to go into the details, the speechless young lady continued watching him - unaware that her glares were both, part-intimidating and part-pleading!
'Well...she was stuck...' he finally begun explaining with a smile - deciphering the myriad of messages in her piercing eyes 'She was lost..she couldn't find her way to the seminar hall...I helped her out...'
Oh, so THAT was it? He was teasing her and taking pleasure in it - again! Nevertheless; with that cover-up of his, Jodha couldn't deny she'd just breathed another MASSIVE sigh of relief. Noticing the proud you-owe-me-again expressions in his eyes thereafter, she looked away with an edgy frown.

'We're all on our way to the canteen now...' he resumed in his usual chirpy tone 'Maan and I are treating those who can join us, to a round of Samosas and chai for today's success...why don't you three come along?'
Jodha suddenly looked up once again 'W...what...n...n'
'Oh yes...kyun nahi...' Payal quickly interrupted her. She was not the type to turn down such offers from two handsome seniors!
'Sure...we'd be happy to...' Meera shrugged gladly
Jodha cast a sullen glimpse at her friends for having subtly shut her up. She was not too certain where all of this junior-senior interaction was heading!

Having received their approval, he turned to face the remainder of his group to get going. Straightaway, he caught Renu staring at him with a cynical frown. Breaking out into a nonchalant smile, he dismissed her scepticism with a playful wink 'Ab chalo yaar...it's getting late!'

THE CANTEEN

'THAT is where the entire fiasco had happened' Payal pointed to the fateful table that she'd spilled the tea on 'And the rest as we know is history!'
'Well, only his IPAD is history now' Maan corrected her while sipping on his tea 'RIP IPAD!'
'You still miss it don't you?' Abdul teased 'Tell me Jalal, do you still get dreams of her?'
'Her?' Meera wondered aloud 'You referred to it as HER?'
'Of course we do! He used to 'sleep' with it!' Salim joked
'Sleep?' Payal choked on her tea
'Guys...thanks for telling them all my secrets on our very FIRST meeting ' Jalal laughed at the jokes they were cracking about his Ipad.
The series of guffaws barely seemed to stop - everyone was having fun and laughing louder than the other! Everyone, but her! She'd been the quietest of the lot so far. However, amidst the riotous jests that had been going around their table for the past hour or so, even she had unawarely erupted into a smile more than once - and this was a fact that he hadn't failed to notice!

'Jodha told me that you'd lost your Investment Analysis projects...' Meera spoke up after the laughter had calmed down a bit 'Did you manage to complete it...'

The group fell into an abrupt lull of silence. It seemed like the query had brought everything to a standstill. Unaware of how to react to the transition, Jodha, Meera and Payal stared at each other in worried confusion for a whole minute.
Just then; Jalal, Renu, Abdul, Maan and Salim exploded into a slow crescendo of uncontrollable chuckles.
'He'd lied' Renu admitted ultimately
'Baap re' Meera was shocked as the reality sunk in 'You'd lied to the AD about losing your project?'
'He had a backup copy in a pen drive' Renu grinned
'You didn't think I'd type out an entire project and NOT have a backup copy...' his smiles were impish

So, he'd fibbed about it? To sway the AD in his favour? His gang might be sniggering about it now, but Jodha wasn't impressed in the least. In retrospect, if there was one thing she'd felt REALLY guilty about, it was the fact that he'd lost his project - and it turned out that it was all a lie. In fact, Meera and Payal failed to find the humour in it too!
Viewing the smiles fizzle out from their juniors' faces, Renu swiftly tried justifying his actions 'Hey ...don't mistake us...Jalal was mean because he was super-annoyed that his Ipad had been destroyed ... it was his Ammi's gift to him..a memento for having scored very well last semester!'
'Don't worry' Jalal tried lightening the situation 'I've done well today...so, I'll demand another one right away!'

Ammi's gift? Jodha didn't look convinced. What if this was another fabrication? Either way, she wasn't happy he'd lied.
A second round of perplexing pause ensued. With each gaping at the other's face and not knowing how to move on, Meera made a faltering attempt to cease the sudden silence that'd cropped up in their otherwise fun-filled session 'Wow! An Ipad every semester? If I score well, my papa thumps 500Rs in my hand... and ..I...I... used to think even that's a lot!' she giggled 'Ham log tho seedhe saadhe hain...you guys are...erm...super rich...' she paused - she'd caught on to the fact that her words were only amplifying the awkwardness.
For starters, THEY didn't know how to respond to her 'super rich' comment and her gang were now looking even more bewildered than before. She'd somehow embarrassed herself and downplayed her pals unintentionally. Jodha realized that this is where their groups contrasted from one another - their comfort-zones and families were leagues apart.

Displeased with how things had turned out in the last five minutes, Jodha made a quick glance at her watch 'Shall we leave girls? Its getting really late...'
A second later, Meera and Payal nodded in response - it was getting quite late anyway.
'Thanks for the treat' Jodha concluded diplomatically 'Congratulations to you two once again...'

Just as the trio rose from their seats to make their way out, Jalal stood up to face the juniors - Jodha to be precise 'Hey I meant to ask...would you lovely ladies like to join me for my birthday party...in two weeks time? Its on November 2nd - a weekend! Its only my buddies and I...'

'WHAT are you doing?' A visibly alarmed Renu thought to herself, as she heard his words.
When she'd wanted to arrange a blast-of-a-party for him - like she did every year, he'd specifically refused stating he only wanted it to be a private affair with 'close' friends. So, why was he extending his invitation to this group that he hardly knew? Even if it was his effort to make last minute amendments for the delicate episode that'd just gone by, she felt not-too-happy about it!
Aware of the marked transformation in Renu's expressions, Jodha gently looked up to meet eyes with him 'Thanks ...b..but...I can't...I mean...we barely know each other...you haven't even invited your own classmates, right?'
His smile gradually disappeared. For some reason, her mild rebuttal stung him - maybe because, he'd taken it that she wouldn't turn down his invite 'Who I invite is my wish...its my party...waise, I call people for the company they give me...not for other reasons...'
Company she gave him? They hadn't even shared a civil conversation yet!
'Thank you Jalal...' she replied thereafter - reading the frowns on his face 'But, I'd have to respectfully decline...my parents will not be pleased if I stay out late partying...'
She started walking away from the silent man, but then turned back. She better say it before it appeared like HE had to remind her again. So she did - in a not-too-arrogant, but not-too-empathetic tone 'By the way Jalal, once again... SORRY for the whole Ipad fiasco...THANK YOU for the lift the other day... and THANK YOU for your help today!'

There! Hopefully, with that their account books had now been balanced out!

PART 9

THE SINGH HOUSEHOLD - THE KITCHEN

'Nope Jodha you still haven't guessed it right..' she nodded her head playfully, as she placed the last of the leftover Diwali sweets into their designated containers 'Hmmm...I thought you were smarter!'

Blowing away the stray lock of hair that kept tickling her cheek, Jodha cast another glance at the piece of paper that had been closely guarded for more than fifteen minutes now. Dejectedly turning back to face the kitchen sink, she resumed washing the soap off the dirty dishes she'd scrubbed so far 'I told you bhabhi...I give up...ab to bataa hi deejiya...what's in the paper'

Her bhabhi was undoubtedly the most adorable thing on Earth, but this guessing-game had gone on for long enough now!

Tucking the pallu of her saree, bhabhi walked up to her young nanand to assist her with the washing up. Noting the frowns on her victim's face, the lady's smile widened into an affectionate beam 'JODHA! It has very valuable information in it! It has HIS phone number on it...he's asked you to give him a call whenever you have the time...'

She looked up with renewed curiosity 'WHO?'

'Rishabh!' came the puzzling reply 'The boy we were referring to the other day...after coming to know that your kundalis match, his family have shown a lot of interest...I've heard that he...'

'Oh No! So, they've not given up with this rishta business, after all!' zoning out from the conversation in seconds, Jodha let out a hushed groan 'Hey Bhagwaan...mujhe bachaao!'

Just then, the soft ringtone on her mobile phone started ringing - much to her relief 'Oh! A call...a life-safer'

Washing the soap off her hands, she rushed to pick the buzzing mobile from the kitchen countertop. It was Payal 'Hi yaar!'

'Hiii' came the high-pitched greeting from the other end 'So, how's the Sunday been so far?'

'Good...' Jodha answered with a lazy smile 'Nothing exceptional!'

'All right...listen...want to join us for coffee and then the evening show of Krish 3?'

'Coffee? Krish 3? WOW!' Jodha uttered in surprise. She looked up at the kitchen clock - it was past 5 pm 'But, I've heard its not great!'

'Tho kyaa hua...' she was beginning to sound disappointed 'Join us for the company na...you rarely come out to restaurants or movies...did you never go out with your friends in college...'

'Errr...no...I...I mean yes I did...but...' she stuttered to come up with an appropriate answer. Her friend had a point - but, she was no killjoy either. Like any other college-goer, she loved hanging out with pals too. However, the fuss her brothers kicked up whenever she'd requested permission to stay out late was so unrealistic that she didn't even bother half the time!

With no proper response from her friend, Payal resumed from where she'd left off 'You didn't join us last week for Jalal's birthday party either...it was such fun!'

'Oh!'

Now THAT was something she had no intention of asking her family permission for anyway. Apart from the fact that it was Diwali eve, she was quite sure she couldn't be bothered. Her friends had decided to go ahead - good for them.

'The guys are just too good...' Payal continued 'GOD...they're just hilarious...especially Jalal...'

'Uh huh...' she acknowledged with exaggerated disinterest as Payal shot off into the details

'The food was amazing too!'

'GOOD!' Jodha grumbled 'Seems like you guys really enjoyed...' she tried to recall how she was quite happily gorging on sweets and savouries too! So; she didn't miss out on much, right?

'Maan...he was wearing this red shirt...he was awesome...and Jalal...'

'You've lost it' She cut her friend. She convinced herself that she just wasn't interested in knowing more!

Sensing what sounded like mild irritation in Jodha's voice, Payal veered the topic back to its original course 'Fine...come with us this evening!'

'I'll have to ask mama...and bhaiyya...'

'Ufff! Its not like you're clubbing every evening...I'm sure if you asked, they'd agree...'

'Payal...er...I'm not sure yaar!'

'Fine...I'll get there and ask them myself if you're going to be such a kaayar about it!'

'What?'

'Now open the front door!'

'WHAT?'

'You heard me...'

THE LIVING ROOM

Leaning against the wide-ajar front door, the flabbergasted young lady folded her arms in mock disdain as she observed the delightful mischief in their eyes. While Payal and Meera looked at each other and back at Jodha with sheepish frowns, Jodha went on to interrogate them - pretending to be peeved 'Badtameez...both of you were standing here all along while making that call to me?'

Meera spoke up with a timid smile 'Jo we have to tell you something...'

'Mama... papa... bhaiyya sab ghar par hain...' she interrupted them - breaking out into a wide grin as she did so 'First come in and meet them all'

Even before the two friends could object to this daunting formality, they found themselves dragged right into the middle of her living room - subsequently coming to face with six new faces. Shortly thereafter; a quick round of introductions were carried out, smiles exchanged and the two new guests ushered a seat!

'FINALLY...you both decided to visit us' her mother stated pleasantly as she brought forth two plates of snacks for the two visitors 'Here...help yourselves...I've brought some malpua and bhujia...'

Confounded, the two young ladies silently accepted the offers. Having been overwhelmed by the initial welcome, it was a good ten minutes before one of them could find the nerve to do what they'd ACTUALLY come to - i.e. seek approval!

'Actually a... aunty...' Payal stuttered - watching Jodha every now and again 'We'd come to ask you if Jodha could come with us for a movie...we friends are going for the evening show of Krish 3'

A spell of unsettling silence fell upon the room as her brothers and parents hurled each other AND Jodha questioning frowns.

'Movie? Now?' came the question eventually 'It'll be well past 10:30 pm by the time you girls return home...were you planning to go alone?'

'No' Meera explained slowly - darting Jodha a fidgety look 'We are a large group...so you need not worry bhaiyya...the rest of them are waiting in the car downstairs!'

This time it was Jodha's turn to be ALARMED!

'Why are they waiting downstairs?' her dad smiled affably thereafter 'Ask them to come up too beta!'

Make it DOUBLY ALARMED!

****************************************************

The modest three bedroom apartment was lively enough with its usual seven residents traipsing around - add seven more and it was now nearly chaotic!

Glaring at her friends with disapproving looks, she could feel her 'discomfort' antennae stand up in attention as HIS gang walked through the front door. Granted, her Sunday evening had been quite boring and she'd hoped for something exciting to happen - but, NOT this!

HIM at her home? Putting up with his antics at college was bad enough!

As expected, Maan took the first initiative and greeted the familiar family - followed by Salim, Renu, Abdul then finally Jalal. Dapper as always in a casual green polo t-shirt, he came across her 'gharelu' avtaar for the first time as he strutted into the living room. Who would have thought a dull blue cotton salwar teamed with a messy bun could look adorable - and at that instant, THEY locked glances too. It was only for a few seconds, but it was enough to convey enough fiery words to and fro. Not surprisingly, HER messages were mostly queries and HIS totally unfazed answers - messages only THEY could gauge!

'You here?' she stared on, not-very-hospitably

A cynical smile emerged on his lips that translated 'By the way, thanks for wishing me BELATED birthday greetings ...and that too through your friends!'

Her frowns deepened 'Whatever! But, how did you manage to land here on a Sunday evening?'

His eyes silently indicated in the direction of Payal and Meera 'Bringing you along to this movie was your friends' idea...not mine...I just went along!'

She looked away. The scuffling around the couch had brought their animated exchanges to an abrupt end - that and the fact that she didn't want her family catching their animosity.

While her mother and bhabhi swiftly disappeared into the kitchen to top up the refreshments, Jodha stood back numbly - marking the inconvenience on Renu's face as the majority of the 'Super rich' gang were trying hard to squeeze into her mid-sized settee.

A minute later, it was becoming evident that there wasn't enough seating space on the settee to accommodate all. So, Jalal and Abdul decided to very modestly accept bade bhaiyya's suggestion and pull themselves two dining chairs to sit on instead. She'd anticipated his snobbish attitude to show through during this - but it didn't! On the contrary, the 'spoilt brat' appeared quite comfortable at her place! Truth be told, Jodha ironically felt more 'out-of-place' than anyone else there.

What's more, they even seemed enthused about tasting the home made delicacies her mother had brought - something she'd assumed they wouldn't.

'Hmmm this is delicious' Maan complimented the mother as he took a bite of the malpua 'Love it!'

'Yes Aunty...' Jalal nodded - thoroughly enjoying the fare 'Wayyy better than ANY other sweet I've tasted!'

Though she didn't exactly agree with Jalal's sentiments, Renu chipped in nevertheless 'Yes it's lovely aunty, thank you!'

All along; Jodha watched in silence. Despite her scepticism, she had to admit she was surprised by the lack of fuss from their end - especially his!

For a brief while thereafter; conversations flew back and forth. The topic steadily shifted from 'university' and 'subjects' to 'Jodha' and 'friends'. Needless to say, the progressing subjects only made an already awkward situation worse - especially, with her proud father revealing far more of her life than she'd hoped.

If only she could stop the revelations or even get away from it, but alas! So, here she sat by helpless - witnessing her dad go on forever - avoiding Jalal's gazes throughout, while he grew increasingly amused by the unfolding scenes!

'Oh yes...' Mr. Singh pursued 'My daughter has always been a class topper...'

'All my children love reading books, but Jodha is a bookworm!'

'She's very talented too!'

'She's won many awards'

'Uncle...' Jalal eventually spoke up many minutes later - when he got the chance to, that is! He pointed to a beautiful glass painting in the showcase, wholly aware that he was being observed by her 'So, what about that one? Is that Jodha's work of art too?'

'Definitely...she's a skilled artist!' Mr.Singh turned to his wife - he'd finally realized he'd been the only one talking for a while now 'She loves glass painting too, doesn't she Malti?'

'True!' the mother nodded - joining in with a typical maternal whine 'She is very talented, but sometimes it's too much... her messy desk is a testament to that...she tries her hand at so many things ...I've lost track!'

'Mama!' Jodha looked at her mom with a confounded frown - she didn't know if this was meant to be a compliment. Jalal had to nearly bite his lip to restrain himself from erupting into a chuckle there.

Sensing the tension, Meera attempted to make the conversation more bearable for Jodha 'Jo hasn't told us the rest, but we know she sings well...we've heard her beautiful voice in the University!'

'Oh not only does she sing well, she loves dancing too...' her younger brother deliberately butted in 'In the weekends, she switches on the music in her room and starts dancing like Madhuri Dikshit...' By this point, nearly half the room was giggling.

'Urgggh!PLEASE STOP!' If only she could scream in protest! However, she couldn't - so, she chose the diplomatic way out 'Bhaiyya! Mama...papa...they must be getting late...they wanted to go for a show, remember?'

'Thank God for that!' Renu breathed a sigh of relief 'Yes aunty...uncle... we should get going...' this entire consent-seeking affair was becoming too elaborate!

'So, can Jo come along?' Payal pleaded soon after

'Pleaseee!' Meera chipped in

Jodha watched them with an unconvinced frown. When Payal had called her half an hour ago - she was desperately hoping she could go. Now, she wasn't so sure!

Nevertheless, her mother and bade bhaiyya seemed to be somewhat 'taken' by the entertaining lot! Ensuing a short pause, they gave her friends the nod

'Jodha...ja...jaldi...go get ready...don't delay them...don't forget to take your mobile along...'

'Yes...and remember after the movie, you get back home right away... all right?'

THE STAIRS

The stairwell of the 1980s residential apartment block was filled with echoes of a different kind - the kind when a bevy of chattering college-goers seemed uber excited about a forthcoming outing. Giggling and jesting amongst each other, her gang were at their spirited most - they hadn't expected Jo would be able to make it, but here she was! While the young ladies dashed down the two flights that lay ahead, the men had to pick pace to keep up. All men, except one. HE was the last to follow and he couldn't care less. His mind continued to be in a bit-of-haze. He'd been observing her for a while now - in fact, ever since she'd stepped out of her room decked up in that red embellished anarkali salwar.

The dress she was wearing was more beautiful than anything he'd seen her in - its deep shade only highlighting her flawless skin. Even without exclusive attires and expensive accessories, she was a diva in her own right. She had subtle elegance and Jalal knew to admire 'subtle'. Well, he'd been thronged by the dipping cleavage-miniskirt in-your-face partying types for so long, this reserved traditional beauty was fast becoming a welcome difference. Besides, their colourful encounters had helped him see beyond the superficiality of it all - got him to NOTICE her for what she was - and this was not the 'wink and nudge' 'wolf-whistle' variety of notice. This was silent admiration of someone truly 'different'.

Moreover, Jodha was the first woman he'd encountered who showed no interest in him whatsoever - literally unmoved by his looks, bank balance, wit or charm! Now, that wasn't because she was obnoxious. After all, she was sweet to all else. It was because her 'masaaledaar attitude' was only reserved for him - and he HATED it!

No...no...no - he didn't hate her. He didn't even hate her obvious dislike of him. He hated the fact that HE hadn't been able to change her obvious dislike of him, YET!

'Jodha' he called out to the oblivious lady who was rushing ahead

Somewhat startled, she stopped on the step she was descending and turned around to face him.

Moving down a few steps to catch up with her, he silently waited for the rest of his gang to move ahead. They took the hint and continued proceeding on their path down!

Once everyone was out of earshot, he told her 'Your duppata...its been sweeping the stairs!'

'Oh!' glancing down, she picked up the beautiful drape and dusted it before readjusting it on her shoulders. Looking back at him, she could fathom that he had more on his mind - 'stuff' he was holding back 'What?' she asked him sceptically

His soft eyes playing with hers, he didn't take very long to say what he wanted to. He smiled tenderly 'Madhuri Dikshit, haan? Glass painting? Jodha...I've been meaning to add to that long list of qualities your dad talked about...you're a classical beauty, do you know that?'

Any other woman would have blushed at the husky whisper and the unanticipated compliment. SHE would have dismissed it off. However at this instance she didn't do both - since those choice of words reminded her of something else - the message sent by the anonymous texter! Both were eerily close!

'Do you even know how classically sensuous you are?'

PART 10

THE STAIRS contd...

'Jodha...I've been meaning to add to that long list of qualities your dad talked about...you're a classical beauty, do you know that?'

His choice of words reminded her of something else - the message sent by the anonymous texter! Both were eerily close!

'Do you even know how classically sensuous you are?'

'THANK YOU!' he prodded her - she'd been silent for long enough

'What?'

'I mean people generally react to compliments with a thanks'!' he grinned

The words of the text message still playing in her mind, Jodha wasn't so sure how to react. If he WAS the anonymous texter what was he trying to achieve, anyway?

'Er...ye...yes...thanks..' the preoccupied young lady stuttered

She could have brought up her suspicions then

She should have brought up her suspicions then.

However with six other pairs of eyes impatiently fixated on them, she realized that it was neither the time nor the place for a showdown of sorts!

'Let's leave...we'll get delayed for the movie' she brushed him off a second later

Waiting for no further reaction from him thereafter, she left the frowning young man to himself - rejoining the group that'd been waiting for them for a short while now.

THE CINEMA HALL - LOBBY

Queues for English movies. Queues for Telugu movies. Queues for Hindi movies. Queues for fizzy drinks. Why, one had to queue up even if they'd to make a quick visit to the bathroom! Not surprising in the least - Sunday evenings at popular cinema halls were always a busier-than-usual affair.

Noisy children, groups of teenagers, couples oh-so-in-love, large families, the elderly - the generous carpeted lobby was crammed with all sorts!

Thankfully, THEIR group could fast-track SOME of the queuing issues that evening - they'd sorted their tickets well ahead through advance reservation. Unfortunately, for salted popcorn and coca-cola there was no such short-cut! So, while the women had gone ahead to take their seats in the cinema hall, the men had chivalrously decided to brace the long lines, pay for the movie-munchies AND bring it to them!

As pre-decided, everything was progressing according to plan - till Jodha had suddenly realized that she'd forgotten something. Therefore, halfway into the dim movie hall she'd left behind her friends with an 'I'll be back' message and returned to the crowded scenes of the lobby.

Examining the long rows in front of the food counters, she ultimately managed to spot his green polo t-shirt amongst the horde of customers a good distance away. However, he hadn't noticed her - and it wasn't because of the crowds or the noise or that he was busy chatting with his buddies. It was because he was engrossed in something else altogether!

Holding on to a large tub of popcorn in one hand and drinks in another, Jalal seemed to be happily entertaining a young lady - a very very good looking young lady. Now, this unfamiliar babe wasn't the typical clubbing type she'd seen in his circles. Something about this lady spelt 'sophistication' - just like it did about him.

Jodha subconsciously observed the duo's overtly cordial manner for a few seconds 'Acquaintances maybe...they're not cousins...they don't look related from any angle...'

Just then, this beautiful newcomer burst out into a volley of giggles - Jalal had obviously said something funny enough. What's more - he was thoroughly enjoying her reactions to his jokes!

'WOW! Does he know all the females in Hyderabad or what?' she mocked Jalal with mild contempt

A brief spell of chirpy conversation and laughter later, the pair finally appeared ready to part - with a hug, of course. Frowning upon their friendly embrace, Jodha rolled her eyes - she didn't know why she was standing there and watching their exchanges - both, verbal and physical!

Looking away shortly, the young lady continued waiting at her spot - knowing he'd be coming her way soon. She was right.

Just as she went on to adjust the silky dupatta that had slipped from her shoulder, she heard his voice calling out to her 'Hey what are you doing here? I thought you'd be inside with the rest of them...'

She turned around to face him. He noticed that she was holding out something for him - 2 Rs 100 notes

'For what?' he asked, puzzled

'For the movie' she nodded casually 'I heard you'd paid'

'I know that...but, there's no need...' Jalal paused to study her expressions - but, they gave away nothing. He let out a sigh 'You don't have to pay me back now...baad mein kabhi...'

'Because I want to pay for it now...' there was no convincing her otherwise

After a moment, he shrugged his shoulders 'Fine...fair enough.'

Since his hands were full, he handed her the drinks before taking the notes from her 'By the way...these drinks are for Meera, Payal and yourself...' he broke out into a faint smile 'And PLEASE don't pay me back for THIS!'

'Thanks' she nodded - compelled to return his smile with at least half-a-smile 'I understand'

He raised his brow in surprise - he hadn't expected that pleasant acknowledgement from her 'Ok... chalo the movie's about to start...Abdul, Maan, Salim will join us soon...'

Just as he was about to reach out to his wallet to tuck the cash in, he unknowingly ended up moving a step back and BAM! He'd knocked someone behind him in that crowded vestibule.

'Oh' Jodha gasped, witnessing the result of his momentary carelessness.

Swiftly spinning around, the startled young man observed a boy dejected by how half his tub of popcorn was now scattered on the floor. A second later and the little one broke out into a loud bout of sobs.

Wondering if she should try to calm the child, Jodha stepped forth - but, then stopped. Jalal had already half-kneeled to apologize.

'This should be interesting' she thought, as she stood back and watched the twosome.

'Hey...I'm so so sorry...' he started off on a kind note 'Don't cry...'

However, the child's wails only seemed to escalate following the apology. The young man then went on to placate the lone kid with a few kind words. Why, he even offered him some of his popcorn.

Alas, nothing could really cheer up a kid whose popcorn bucket had been ruined - except for another NEW popcorn bucket of course!

With the snack-queues being long enough and them being late enough for the movie, Jalal decided to give in a minute later. He handed the boy his 'mega' bucket of popcorn in exchange for the smaller one that'd been toppled 'Here you go...I'm quite full...can't eat all of this anyway...'

As though by magic, the boy's tears seemed to stop instantaneously! She was impressed.

'Thanks' the boy cheered up, wiping the nearly dry tears from his cheeks. With typical childlike innocence he handed his own small carton to Jalal 'Now, you better not start crying... here...you can have this instead!'

Glancing at the nearly-empty carton thumped into his hand, Jalal let out an understanding smile 'Thanks...this should do...aur chinta mat karo... I will not cry!'

It was her turn to bite her lip so she didn't erupt into loud chuckles. The whole scene had turned out more enjoyable that she'd anticipated!

With the kid scooting off from the scene soon after, he had to alert a passing attendant about the mess that'd been created in the lobby. Owing to the entire fuss created, it was a good ten minutes before he could revert his attention to the lady who'd been waiting for him so long.

Jalal noted the hidden amusement in her expressions. He quite liked it 'Found it funny, ha?'

Careful not to give away too much, Jodha reined-in her smile. Instead, she indicated to the empty carton in his hand 'Are you sure you don't want to get yourself more?'

'I've gorged on plenty of malpua and bhujia anyway...' he winked 'The popcorn was just to help me sit through a snooze-fest like Krish3!'

A full-blown giggle made its way on to her pretty lips. FINALLY! She'd held it back for too long anyway.

'Wow...' he exclaimed, studying her laughter. Losing his popcorn was TOTALLY worth it now!

THE MOVIE

Laughing with the jokes, laughing at absurd scenes, commenting on the heroines' wardrobes, drooling over Hrithik's well-toned body, humming popular tunes, fighting over the snacks - the ladies did it all. Occupying the first four seats in their premier row they were quite a noisy bunch. The men who were seated on the next four were a lot quieter in comparison as their discussions remained restricted to CGI effects and Kangana Vs Priyanka debates!

Nevertheless; during the course of the film there were at least a few instances when Jalal cast a side-glimpse her way. It was inadvertent - he'd never seen such a of myriad adorable expressions and reactions from her side. SHE on the other hand, deliberately tried to avoid looking his way - something she was not entirely successful with! Without intending to do so, she'd managed to notice his grins, his frowns, his spirited manner and his regular glancing-at-the-watch habit too. Why, during an especially boring scene she even caught him stifle a small yawn. For a good portion of the first half, her thoughts somehow kept swaying between the adorable-popcorn scene and the not-so-adorable scenes with the 'stranger'!

At some point, the theatre lights came back on with the 'INTERMISSION' sign flashing in front - bringing her back to her group's conversations that she'd been mentally absent from for a while now.

A host of advertisements for upcoming movies started playing on the screen. While most of the spectators stepped out for a break, his gang decided to stand up in the aisle to stretch their legs. No sooner than they did so, the promos for Ram Leela started playing on-screen - with all of its steamy routines obviously.

Left speechless by the smooch-scenes and double-meaning dialogues, the girl-gang broke out into embarrassed chuckles - especially when noting the men's typical boyish responses to it!

Despite having pre-decided that she would refrain from doing so, she cast a quick unmindful glance at HIM to detect his reaction to the scenes. By chance, he caught her observing him and she realized that he'd caught her!

Marking the return of mild playfulness in his eyes, Jodha then quickly looked away - half a shade pinker than before their silent 'hide-seek' game had started.

'Damn!' she self-cursed, for letting herself get into that situation. She should have known better than to look his way - specifically during the steamy ads. Why did the mind have to be such a stubborn mule with a will of its own? Anyway, thanks to the briefly embarrassing debacle she'd learnt her lesson and kept her eyes transfixed on the screen for the remaining half of the movie!

THE PARKING LOT

Keeping pace with the crowds trickling through the exit of the movie theatre complex, the ladies huddled themselves within their shawls and wraps as the chilly night breeze grazed their faces. They'd had fun that evening and it showed on their faces. However, it'd been a long evening and the Monday blues had already set in - specially for her group. So, they squandered no further time and progressed towards the semi-full parking lot.

As the parties split towards the two cars, Jodha ended up crossing his path.

Since the opportunity had landed his way, he decided to take it. Stopping her with a smile, he went on to enquire on a cordial note 'Had fun?'

She'd wanted to avoid this meeting. Since she couldn't, she let out a subtle sigh and nodded affirmatively.

'We should hang out together more often...maybe next weekend...' he continued 'Ram Leela will release by then, if you're interested...'

For some reason, she suddenly felt irked by his suggestion. She knew not why, but she did. It could be because the movie on offer was too lewd for her taste. It could be because the 'Ram Leela' topic reminded her of their awkward game a short while earlier. It could be because it felt like he was using the movie-card to ask her out on a date. Maybe a combination of all, but she didn't feel gladdened by his approach. The question now was how to wiggle out of this offer.

'So, shall I take your silence to be a yes?' he prodded her gently

The uncomfortable young lady could see a glimmer of anticipation in his eyes. NO! She had to squash it then and there. She didn't want to give him false hopes - definitely not when she didn't feel like hanging out with him or his gang 'No I don't want to come out with you any more...please don't ask me out again...'

For a second there, he thought she was kidding and laughed to himself. However, soon after - it became quite clear her rebuttal wasn't as a joke 'May I ask why? Because of your family's reservations?' though disappointed, he ensured his tone was still courteous

'Not only that'

'Then?' his smile had vanished by now

'W...we're very different Jalal...our families...our circles...' she looked away uneasily

Woah! He was taken aback - he hadn't expected this. Realizing she was referring to the differences in their societal statuses, Jalal retorted unhappily 'Neither have such thoughts crossed my mind, nor do I have any such prejudices...why, your friends don't either...so, YOU'RE the only one that has a problem with this then...'

'I'm not your type...' she cut him - she hadn't intended to spell it out then, but it was better to confess at some point and be done with it!

Evidently offended by her attitude, he pressed on for an explanation 'What do you mean by YOUR TYPE? What TYPE am I?'

She muttered under her breath 'The flirty kind'

'What? come again...' he didn't hear what she'd said, but he knew very well what she was hinting at

'I'll explain later' This wasn't looking good. Thank God their friends were waiting inside the cars - not out witnessing this showdown.

'No...' he insisted 'I want to know now!'

FINE! If he was cornering her into it she'd oblige him with the truth just as well. She'd withheld everything long enough anyhow. Looking into his eyes once again, she came back with conviction 'I'm not as diplomatic as you, so forgive me for not mincing my words...' she paused 'The real reason I don't want to hang out with you is because I don't trust you, Jalal!'

'Don't TRUST me?' He was aghast. This was possibly the most insulting thing anyone had ever told him till date. Little did he know worse was to come. Tempering his rage, he studied her actions closely as she proceeded to grab the mobile from her handbag.

Scrolling through the inbox, she handed him her mobile to show him the messages 'I was referring to these texts...' she paused restlessly 'YOU sent these, right?'

Having taken a brief glimpse at the texts, he glared at her with subdued ferocity 'You've gotta be kidding me...you assumed I was sending you these?'

PART 11

JODHA'S ROOM

Placing her pen down in frustration, she glimpsed up at the clock - it was nearly 11:10 pm! She was supposed to finish those ledger entries in time for the business accounting class next morning, but her mind was just not into it. Instead she'd shifted to drawing doodles on her notepad for a while now. As she took another sip of warm milk from the glass sitting on her desk, she cast an anxious peek at her mobile phone.

She'd become increasingly tired - and it wasn't due to the coursework. If nothing else, she was a whizz at accounting!

She'd become increasingly tired that the night's decisive events - nearly a week ago - had still not reached a proper resolution. With the days passing by, the gnawing restlessness was beginning to spill over into her normal routines too! Worse, she had no one else to blame for her missing 'sanity', except herself!

No... no... no... she wasn't guilty she'd doubted HIM. After all, the brattish senior was no saint! What'd been eating her up was her behaviour FOLLOWING the encounter. In the past five days she'd come up with fifty excuses to avoid walking up to him and owning up to her mistake. She knew she was self-respecting, but then she thought she was righteous too! When she'd never had issues apologizing to her family, her friends or even the odd rickshaw man she bumped into - then why issues doing the same with HIM alone?

Letting out a flustered groan, Jodha once again recalled the heated exchanges they'd had that night outside the cinema hall -

*****

'You sent these, right?' she'd questioned him - with false authority

He'd taken a brief glimpse at the texts and glared at her with ferocity 'You've gotta be kidding me...you assumed I was sending you these?'

He'd fallen silent in smouldering anger thereafter - taking it all in - trying to fathom how much she must despise him to have come to such an assumption. As the spell of unbroken glares had continued for a few troubling seconds, the only sound reverberating between them was that of the rustling breeze.

'The real reason I don't want to hang out with you is because I don't TRUST you!'

It had lingered in his psyche for longer than he could care to remember. Her impulsive outburst had definitely offended him - more so for a man who prided himself on being a 'gentleman' with the ladies! He could have come up with a million other retorts in his justification to counter that abrupt remark. However, within all of those silent moments he'd also managed to recover from the jolt and curb his urges to react aggressively. He couldn't be interested in a war-of-words - not in public, not at 10pm, not for someone who thought so little of him. So, he'd kept it short and not-so-sweet!

'WOW! I realize you dislike me, but this is something else altogether. Did you think I was taking advantage of you? What am I to you, a pervert?' he'd paused - unintentionally escalating her discomfort as he did so 'I don't have to resort to becoming an insane stalker to compliment you or ask you out...in fact, if you realize...I complimented you AND asked you out today ...UPFRONT...'

Proceeding to give back her phone, he'd removed his mobile phone out of his pocket 'Give me your mobile number now'

'W...why?' Jodha stuttered sceptically. She was beginning to grow increasingly rattled by it all - the unexpected turn-of-events, the disturbing words, his bottled rage - everything! The drama couldn't end soon enough!

'Give it to me...I need it to prove something VERY simple!' his eyes continued to bore into hers - his tone at its sarcastic most 'After all, don't ALL accused have a right to prove their innocence?'

Compelled to look away from his piercing gazes for a second, Jodha then unwillingly went on to murmur her number to him - trying to put up a brave face as she did so.

Before long, he'd entered her number in his mobile - pressed the dial icon - and the call had come through to her phone.

On checking the incoming number, Jodha had straightaway realized that it was different to that of the anonymous texter's - Jalal's number was '098' something and the texter's '093' something.

He'd watched her reactions closely through the revelation - the somewhat-guilty sigh, the dubious frown and the evasive glances!

'This is the only phone I have...I don't have a second phone or sim hidden away somewhere' the young man had spoken up once again - calmer than before 'If you don't believe me, check with my friends...investigate yourself behind my back...WHATEVER!' waiting for her to look up at him properly, he'd concluded with a message that had left her fairly tongue-tied 'But, take it from me... this was my LAST attempt to have a decent friendly conversation with you...never again! Just like how you don't like hanging out with people you can't TRUST, I don't like hanging out with people who don't TRUST me!'

A few seconds later, they'd gotten into their respective cars - with not a word exchanged thereafter!

'What was that all about Jalal?'

'Nothing!' his steely expressions had given away NOTHING - not even to his closest friends!

'Jodha, what happened? What were you guys chatting about?'

'Oh...it's nothing really...' her expressions had given away EVERYTHING - despite the great efforts she'd gone through to hide her distress!

******

She snapped out of it, fed up. Time wasn't really feeling like a great 'healer' in any way. If anything, her dilemma had only worsened in the last half an hour or so. She'd just received TWO text messages a short while ago - it's contents only reiterating the fact that the sender wasn't Jalal. Actually, they were ABOUT HIM!

Text 1 'I saw an angel...Of that I'm sure...She smiled at me...She was with another man

But I won't lose no sleep on that...Cause I have got a plan...You're beautiful!'

Text 2 'I know you've been hanging around with this gang of seniors...particularly Jalal. Don't trust him ...he's only wants ONE thing from you. He's done this to many ladies before...he's trying it again with you...once he gets what he wants, he'll dump you like trash!'

Furthermore, with those disgusting messages she was back to square one - who the hell was this person harassing her? It was someone who liked her AND had an evident dislike for Jalal. It had to be someone BOTH of them knew!

If only there was a person who could provide any form of sane advice that would help her guess the identity of the stalker. She needed a person she could trust - someone who knew the university well enough -someone who knew them both.

'Maan' She suddenly realized 'I'll talk to him about it tomorrow!'

THE UNIVERSITY GROUNDS

Having scrutinized and examined the words of the texts for what was beginning to seem like an eternity, Maan eventually looked up at his patient audience - his brows still knit into a deep frown. If the situation wasn't as disturbing as it was, Meera, Payal and Jodha would have definitely burst out into a mini round of chuckles at the sight - the only thing missing from his Sherlock act was a pipe and a hat!

'The message...' the young man finally spoke up to reveal his conclusions The words are from a popular pop song...the guy has to be some student from this university...but, I can't think who...' he paused on a cautious note 'I hope you are not doubting anyone from OUR group!'

On receiving no particularly positive response from the ladies thence, the baffled young man pursued with confidence 'Hey...Salim has been in a steady happy relationship for very long... Abdul would never do something like this...aur main tho bahut hi decent bandha hoon yaar...' he winked at the end of that sentence

Almost as if by reflex, Payal erupted into a round of giggles - leaving behind her part-sceptical part-amused friends to patiently wait for the spectacle to reach its natural end.

Finding himself somewhat pleased by Payal's reaction, the young man picked up from where he'd left off 'All right...so this guy who sends love quotes... is jealous... possessive... my guess is he's the reserved poetic kind...the type who doesn't interact much...find out if someone of that description studies in your class...' he halted inquisitively 'How long did you say you've been receiving this?'

'Third text in the past two months...the first one was in my first week itself...' and with that she stopped - she realized she'd taken enough of his time. Besides, lunch hour was nearly up and they had to return to their classroom 'Ok...Maan...thanks for your advice...I'll keep you updated if I learn anything new'

'Same here... you're welcome...and most importantly BE SAFE...' he glanced at his watch 'By the way, I gotta be going too...'

'Bye'

'Bye' he flashed them a friendly smile - reserving a specially long one for Payal - which she was only too happy to be the recipient of.

Letting Payal recover from her brief 'gushing' spell, her group begun taking a few steps towards their building. Suddenly, Jodha stopped in her tracks and spun around without warning 'By the way Maan ...one sec...' there was one more thing on her mind - something she'd been meaning to ask him ever since she'd read the SMS.

'Huh?' Maan turned around to face them once again 'Yeah...'

'Er...the words...in the message...' she faltered a bit 'The words...are they true? I..I mean.. what it says of him...I...I mean about Jalal...I only ask because...er...'

'You're asking me if Jalal is a womanizer?' he'd helped her phrase the question - seeing how she was having such difficulty with it. Sporting a nearly-amused smile at the 'inquisitive' expressions on an otherwise 'indifferent' Jodha, he tried to put his point across 'I've told you this before too...just because he is popular with the ladies, doesn't mean he treats them like commodities...Jalal is no womanizer...in fact, he isn't any different to other decent people I know of...but then, if you wish to believe the words of an anonymous texter over mine, that's your choice...' Shrugging his shoulder, he concluded his justifications with a word-of-advice 'And oh yes...as for the SMS, I'm not telling Jalal since you'd requested me not to...but, you should...it doesn't feel right hiding all this from the guy since it concerns him...'

Before long, the young man had begun making his way towards his classes - leaving the ladies to themselves.

Once Maan was out of earshot, Meera asked her friend curiously 'Are you going to show Jalal this text?'

'NO!'Jodha replied - still appearing somewhat dazed from it all 'In fact I'm deleting all three straightaway...I've noted the number elsewhere. Mama uses my mobile sometimes - if she saw these messages, ghar mein hungaamaa machegi...'

'So, you're not going to talk to Jalal about any of it?' Payal prodded 'Are you worried he'll humiliate you after what happened?'

The young lady let out a long sigh. She knew not what to say. Willing or not, she had to face him - someday - and sooner rather than later!

November 25th

THE LIBRARY

'Urgh' she screamed as she rummaged through the stacks of files 'I can't find the paper... PLEASE help me' What a useless lot her friends were. After all, they were 'men' so that explained most of it!

PAT! Jalal tapped her head in mock-anger with the supposedly missing paper that he'd managed to fish out from the rubble instantly 'Its here na...can't you see...' he returned his attention to his own notes 'Pehle hi thesis topic ne dimaag kharaab kar rakhaa hai...and now your tantrums...' she'd whined so much in the past hour, she was driving him and Abdul up the wall. After all, she was a 'woman' so that explained most of it!

'Jalal...' Renu resumed once again - staring at the two men sitting on the other side of her desk 'I'm not convinced my appointed juniors are going to be of much help...they don't seem to know the subject much' she paused 'By the way, do you know the juniors who're going to be assisting you both?'

Abdul glanced at the lady - finally compelled to put his book down 'Don't know...no one's approached us yet...' he asked his friend with an unsure frown 'Tujhe koi idea hai kya?'

Jalal replied without even looking up 'Nope...'

Noting how he continued to be fervently immersed in his papers, both Abdul and Renu took the hint and returned to their notes at once.

The serious frowns on the faces of an otherwise lively group was proof enough that thesis submission was one of the most stressful and trying times during the life of a MBA student.

In Sri RamaKrishna Institute, it was a collaborative effort between year 2 AND year 1 students. In pairs, seniors chose a suitable topic to research on - while two juniors assisted them in the project. This way the seniors got valuable assistance, the juniors valuable knowledge - and both groups valuable marks!

'Hello' the familiarly brazen voice came - some time thereafter 'I am meant to work with you on your thesis...so, I thought I'd come meet you here...'

This time he HAD to look away from his notepad and up at the new visitor that had just approached their desk.

'What the hell' he exclaimed under his breath as it took time to sink in. It was the first time he'd laid eyes on her since their squabble outside the cinema hall. He'd assumed that THAT was to be the last of their bitter-sweet encounters. Well, if he'd understood 'Jodha Singh' well, she wasn't going to admit her faults easily and HE wasn't going to put up with needless impudence. Oh yes, she was the most interesting person he'd come across in a long long time - but, he wasn't going to mourn the loss of what could have been refreshing company at the cost of his pride. So, he'd bid a somewhat quick mental adieu to the interesting junior on the day and been almost done with it - or so he'd thought!

He was wrong!

Here she was, two weeks on - unaffected as ever - proclaiming that she was the junior appointed to assist him on the most important project in his life, yet.

'Meera and I...' Jodha spoke up - seeing how Jalal hadn't really responded with much since her arrival 'We both are going to be assisting Abdul and you...'

He casually leaned back on his chair with flair, reflecting in annoyance 'No hi...no hello...no sorry...no apology...straight to the point as ever'

With his muted-reactions still ongoing, Jodha stoically put forth a request 'By the way, can I speak to you for a minute alone?'

'Alone? Why?' She'd got him briefly curious with that request, but he dismissed it off in a second.
Deliberately taking his own time to do so, the young man replied after a long pause 'No, I can't come anywhere now...am too busy...you can say whatever you want to...here...'

RECAP -

5 days since the incident - though guilty about having used the wrong-choice-of-words, she'd still not talked to him about it.

In meanwhile, she'd received two more texts from the anonymous texter that Maan is unable to say much about. However, Maan reconfirms Jalal's innocence and vouches for others from his group too.

Two weeks later and Jodha suddenly approaches him in the library regarding their dissertation!

November 25th

PART 12

THE LIBRARY

'No, I can't come anywhere now...am too busy...you can say whatever you want to...here...'

'Being a tough cookie, mister?' she thought

She hadn't failed to note how a strange indifference had taken over the usual mischief in his glances. After all, she was no stranger to his vindictiveness. However, while she'd had every reason to retaliate in the past, she couldn't do so this time - PRECISELY why she'd clung on to different excuses to delay facing him.

So, the past two weeks in her life was more or less a daze. She'd been restless at the thought of meeting him AND she'd been restless that she hadn't met him yet. This constant battle between her ego and her conscience was a strange feeling - something she'd never endured before! Therefore; two days ago when fate had intervened and thrusted upon her a reason to face him - she didn't cringe at the thought. On the contrary, she'd actually felt a strange sense of relief.

*********************

Everyone had been waiting for this moment - it was a decisive one. Assisting the senior batch on their projects gave the MBA juniors much needed credits - both, mark wise and experience wise!

Thus; no sooner than Professor Shantaram had spread out the papers that contained the 15 Research topics on his desk - a clamour had broken out in her class. Her classmates had jumped forth at the opportunity to seize whatever subject interested them the most.

Not surprisingly, by the time it was her chance to choose - only three remained. Of those three, one particular topic caught her attention -

Using Innovative IT in a Non-profit Organization for generating income

While all other projects were based on International banks and posh MNCs, this theme was quite different.

'Hmmm...research in a charity?' she'd mulled 'Something different...should make for interesting study and a good learning experience...'

She'd instantly decided to take up the challenge.

'Sir, we'll take this one' she'd spoken up after consulting with Meera, pointing to the title she'd zeroed-in on.

'Hmmm good choice Jodha and Meera...' the professor had said thereafter 'Hope you do well...the seniors you'll be working with are ermmm' he paused to confirm 'Yes...Jalal Muhammad and Abdul Raina...they should be able to guide you very well on this'

Meera's eyes had nearly widened in alarm at the revelation. She'd instantly turned to look at her friend - expecting Jodha would immediately request for an alternative topic.

However, no such thing had happened. Nor had the sombre young lady said anything, nor did her expressions give away much - if anything, she'd stayed puzzlingly unruffled through it all.

'Yes sir' her placid answer had come forty seconds later

*******************

'Hello ma'am' Jalal called out to snap her out of the silent stupor she'd gone into 'What?'

'Errr...' Jodha stalled for a second thereafter 'Here? But...apart from the project...I have to discuss about something else...'

'Yes HERE...' he interrupted her - his manner unfriendly 'Project...woject...jo bhi ho, you can say it...I'm coming nowhere now!'

She stared at Jalal long and hard. Well, she'd expected such rebuttals. So, letting out a deep sigh she resolved to shoot off in no time 'I apologize for the misunderstanding that occurred between us that night...I wrongly assumed some things about you...my words came out harsher than I'd intended them to...sorry...'

Woah! Slowly sitting back up, Jalal raised an eyebrow as he tried reading her guarded frowns - he was REALLY taken aback now. He hadn't expected THAT. An apology? From HER? To HIM? In front of his friends? My my - some wonders never ceased, did they?

'What?' Renu wondered aloud 'Apology for what?'

Their spell instantly broken with that question, the pair turned their attention to the other two in their midst. What followed was even more confusing and made lesser sense to most present - Renu was staring at Jodha, while Jodha at Jalal, Jalal at Renu & Jodha and Abdul at all the three faces.

That's when Jodha had realized that his friends knew nothing about their tiff outside the cinema hall, yet!

Watching him respond to his friends with a mildly-awkward smirk, it was Jodha's turn to be taken-aback 'What! He hadn't told them about it? He'd actually missed out on the perfect chance to let his friends gossip about the bitchy junior?'

She'd assumed all along that they would have known about the incident, seeing how his group always acted like a mutual cheerleading squad - but, she was mistaken. My my - some wonders never ceased, did they?

'Can someone please explain what's going on...' Renu spoke again - growing increasingly impatient. This merry-go-round of stares and glares showed no signs of ending 'Does this have to do with the conversation you guys were having outside the cinema hall, while we waited in the car?'

This time both, Jodha AND Jalal cast each other an odd look.

Swiftly grasping the delicate nature of the situation, Abdul elected to take the lead so that SOMETHING meaningful could be achieved out of it all 'Renu, I think we should step aside for a while...they probably want to clear some things up...on their OWN!'

Cocking back her head in surprise, she hurled Abdul a 'What-the-hell' stare.

'Yes...yes you can glare at me all you want later' he said as he rose from his seat and began dragging his not-too-pleased friend from hers too 'I needed a break anyway...how about a cup of chai...I'll get you that cadbury I'd promised you yesterday!'

Observing how his friend managed to skilfully whisk Renu away from the table, Jalal couldn't help but let out a low laugh. However, no sooner than his gazes returned to the other lady standing in front, his cheer steadily died down.

After a strange interval of silence, he rolled his eyes to signal towards the chair opposite his - indicating her to take a seat. She obliged while continuing to be as composed as she could.

After about 10 seconds of stillness at the table, Jodha decided it was best for one of them to speak up. So, she did 'Can I ask what that half-smile of yours means?'

'It means I'm still debating whether I should accept your apology or not...'

This vengeful young man was not one to let go of grudges - at least, not easily. A friend to a friend, a foe to a foe had always been his success mantra.

Take for instance, the recent episode where he'd had a classmate of his permanently evicted from the University football team -

Well, in the past this 'classmate' had taken Jalal's help in more ways than one - getting himself treated to many free lunches, helping himself to precious reading material, using the influence to get a place in the football team etc. Yet, on one particular occasion he'd done the mistake of badmouthing Jalal in public. When Jalal had found out, he took no time in having him kicked out from the team. No amount of 'sorries' from this obnoxious 'classmate' had had ANY effect on HIM thereafter.

Then, why any different with HER? He took another prolonged look at the interesting junior that sat in front. Somehow, this friend-friend foe-foe principle didn't seem to be working here. For starters, he should have been angrier but he wasn't. That one smart apology from her shouldn't have been enough, but it appeared to suffice.

'Why such partiality to this particular 'foe' alone?' he asked himself, but he couldn't really explain it. Was her company so different and interesting that he was prepared to forgo his all-important pride for the sake of it? Well, he would be lying if he said that he'd NEVER thought about her even once in the past two weeks. Only in fleeting moments, but the enchanting lady had graced his mind a few times.

Swiftly emerging from his self-debates, Jalal took the pen from the table and began flicking it between his fingers 'Would you have ever approached me yourself...ever apologized to me had it not been for this thesis work?' He didn't even bother looking at her as he asked her that. Enchanting or not, there was NO WAY he was going to let himself look desperate!

The reply took a short while to come 'Genuinely? I don't know' she tried not to appear too proud as she said it

His fiery gazes shifted from the pen directly to her doe-eyes 'Wow! I have to give it you...you're candid ...but at least, you're honest...'

She didn't know if he was offended or impressed. Maybe both. Nevertheless, she tried to make light of the ongoing unpleasantness 'Jalal, I have to work with you on this project now whether you forgive me or not...but, don't you think it'd make life much easier, if you did accept the apology?'

'You mean, it'd make life easier for YOU...'

'I meant, it'd make life easier for BOTH!'

'Hmmm' he exhaled after a long while 'You DO have a point!'

The tell-tale half-smile eventually came back too!

She then cast a glance at her watch 'Now please tell me something about the topic, so we can get started straightaway from tomorrow...since you've taken nearly 40 minutes to accept a sorry...I have only twenty minutes left...' She knew she was asking for trouble with that last add-on, but she said it anyhow

'GOD!' He let out a flustered sigh in reaction to her latest remark.

She studied his displeasure 'Now what is THIS half-frown supposed to mean?'

'It means that with THAT attitude of yours we're never going to get much productive work done in the upcoming study evenings...' he flashed her a mildly authoritative grin 'So either you'll have to tone it down or...'

'Or?' she waited to see what he was about to say

He liked how curiosity was starting to glaze over her rebellious approach. Lowering his voice, Jalal upped the devilishness in his gazes 'I'll just have to quick-think and come up with new retorts then ...just like you, I have this problem - my mind can't function unless I've settled all scores!'

With that telling statement, both of them continued staring at each other - for a good minute or so. Since both refused to take the conversation ahead, the odd silent spell went on for longer than it should have. That is, till it possibly dawned upon BOTH that thanks to these trivial wit-wars, they were now beginning to forgo their sensibilities. For all practical purposes, this never-ending battle was beginning to appear aimless - even for a headstrong twosome like them!

Jodha ultimately gave in 'WOW! We're both...just...'

He completed her sentence soon enough 'Mental...'

A second later and the duo broke out into a round of hearty chuckles. That last sentence made more sense than everything else they'd told each other till date. Oh yes, the humour in their shared-joke this time was genuinely-jovial and not ego-driven - seeing how it was the first time they were laughing at THEMSELVES instead of at each other!

ENROUTE LIBRARY

Licking the chocolate off the tip of her finger, Renu turned to the sweet young man walking beside her and gave him a 'Thankyou' wink. Her taste-buds and her appetite had him to thank for the treat - pakodas, chai and now the sumptuous Cadbury bar to finish it all off! Though quite petite in frame, she could infamously devour her way through plates of snacks in no time. Especially when it was something she liked - 'paneer' pakodas, for instance.

Happy to see that she was happy, Abdul returned her wink with a 'You're welcome' smile - before nudging her along once again. They had to get going. They'd disappeared from the library long enough - hopefully, long enough for the hostile pair to have managed to sort something out.

Though he knew not what fresh problem had arisen between Jalal and Jodha, he needed them to patch things up. If not for anything else, for his own sanity - after all, the outcome of his thesis depended on it!

Having made their way towards the air-conditioned building, the friends traipsed through the entrance and then between rows of bookshelves. Just as Abdul and Renu spotted the desk they were about to the walk up to - they noticed the seated junior-senior pair that they'd left behind an hour ago.

What they saw thereafter compelled them to bring their pace to a halt - Abdul and Renu were literally dumbstruck! Let's just say, the scene was quite different to what they presumed they'd be witnessing -

'How could you...' Jodha said, wiping the tear that was clinging to the end of her eye 'That's so mean...but, then you lot are always so mean...'

Jalal casually shrugged his shoulder in response 'Well if that's how he speaks, what am I supposed to do...'

Cupping her mouth in momentary alarm, she erupted into another fit of stifled giggles 'Jalal ...that's Prof Shantaram you're talking about...do you guys always tease him like this'

'We're worse...I'm being decent cos you're here...' he leaned forward - sporting a playful frown as he did so 'But honestly tell me...how do you even understand half the words he says? My year 2 batch-mates STILL have to guess...'

Her laughter briefly abated 'Like what?'

Sensing her engrossment, Jalal straightened up and resumed his jesting - he put on the professor's accent once again 'That pipty pipe means fifty five...callletter means calculator...'

As he went on and on, she had to look down and shield her face with her hand so the librarian didn't catch her creating a ruckus. However, even SHE couldn't deny that Jalal's impersonations of the professor were just spot-on and HILARIOUS 'Tum pagal ho...'

'A little' he grinned

'Stop now...' she uttered through the course of her ongoing chuckles 'Or we'll be thrown out...' she'd noticed a few questioning glances from their adjacent desks. Besides, her tummy muscles were beginning to ache thanks to this session of repressed laughter.

Perceptive enough to take a hint when thrown his way, the senior slowed down on the wisecracks. Pity; since it was the first time he'd gotten to witness HER letting her guard down - and it was nothing short of delightful. Anyhow, it took no time for him to revert back to his 'work' mode 'All right...so ...how did all this start...' he actually had to pause to recall 'Oh yes...you'd mentioned prof Shantaram gave you the research topics...and that you chose THIS particular one...'

'Yes' her eyes were dry by now - she'd thankfully managed to recompose herself before being permanently banished from the library premises 'The professor's a nice man...' she continued pensively 'But, I prefer Mrs. Uma's classes...'

'Oh PREFER? Then it'd have to be Ram Charan Sir...' Jalal enthusiastically snapped his fingers in style 'That man's a class apart!'

She nodded in agreement 'No doubt about that'

'And you're not saying that just cos he's your friend's chacha?' he teased

'Errr...maybe'

Observing the pair who'd still not realized that they were being so closely watched, Abdul let out a wide smile. He was mighty pleased by their newfound cordiality - his thesis was safe now! On that optimistic note, he turned towards his friend to get her opinion on the issue - and THAT'S when he noticed that Renu didn't seem to share the same keenness about this unexpected turn of events. Her expressions reflected nothing positive. On the contrary, she was EVIDENTLY displeased!

RECAP -
Jodha had finally gotten over her reservations about meeting Jalal - thanks to the dissertation - and apologized to him in the library. Though the pair had started off the conversation on a hostile note, they'd managed to laugh it all of by the end of it.
Unlike Abdul; when Renu had caught the glimpses of friendliness in their conversation, she wasn't too pleased!
PART 13
December 2nd

THE LIBRARY

Having come to the end of page 235 in a jiffy, the young lady then moved over to 236 and swiftly ran her finger through the complicated tables on the sheet. Unsatisfied by any of the elaborate tabular columns that the book had outlined so far, she made a quick reference of the index and opened a fresh chapter in another section. However, a flip-through of pages 245 and 246 only revealed similar results. Soon after, Jodha shut the book in mild annoyance and switched to the other gargantuan text sitting on the table.
'Damn!' she swore to herself, as she flipped through the leaves of the new book she'd just picked. She couldn't find what she was looking for and what she found was not making entire sense.

Having been a silent spectator of the frantic referencing for more than twenty minutes now, Meera glimpsed at the time in her watch and let out a bored sigh. It was nearly 5pm! This otherwise reasonable friend of hers seemed to transform into this unrecognizable fiercely-competitive bull-headed person when pitted against HIM. Argh!

'Jodha' Meera whined a minute or so later, as she stuffed the research papers in her bag and slid shut its zip 'Let's leave...'
With no time to look up, the engrossed young lady made a pleading hand-signal 'Basss one second more...'
'We can get back to this later...they're all waiting for us at Coffee Day yaar!'
Compelled to eventually dart her pal's weary face a quick peek, Jodha went on to explain her sorry circumstances 'Bahut confidently bataayaa thaa...that I'll get this part of the project ready by today...' she paused - almost dejectedly 'And I haven't...'
'So?' Meera didn't feel too sorry 'Who asked you to boast?'
'WHAT!' irked that her friend wasn't being too supportive, she glared back in retort 'I WASN'T boasting - it's just more difficult than I thought it'd be...' her tone turned more self-sympathetic 'Ugh ... I'm going to end up looking incapable...'
Meera flashed her a soft smile 'Really? So, WHO's going to think of you as incapable?' she definitely wanted to hear an answer to this question!

Exhaling in near-exasperation, Jodha eventually accepted momentary defeat - before proceeding to shut the tiring texts 'Here... closed them now...happy?'
It was only their first week on this project and she'd already been unable to keep up to the timescales they'd set aside for various portions of the work. None could understand how frustrating it felt for a go-getter like her to appear inefficient - and that too in front of HIM! 'I've tried so hard in the past two days and yet I couldn't get this ONE thing done...' she grumbled, while beginning to replace her notes in the bag 'He spends half his time discussing gadgets, gossiping about movies, whiling time at the canteen...and YET, he gets his work ready on time!'

'He's a senior, you're a junior...obviously, he's more experienced!' Meera tried soothing her friend's bruised ego 'Besides, he's good at stats & IT...you at other subjects...so, chill yaar...no one's judging you here...' she paused to reiterate her message 'ESPECIALLY not him!'
Meera's last line did get her thinking, albeit reluctantly. She realized she needed to learn to let-go - at least, a bit. Surprisingly enough, their first 'civil' week together as a group had been quite smooth-sailing. She better not botch it up with her 'attitude' as he'd infamously nicknamed it!

CAFE COFFEE DAY

Taking a sip of the frothy cappuccino from the large mug sitting in front, he frowned in response - it was a tad bit stronger than he liked for it to be. Somehow; on any given day he preferred a cup of tea to a mug of coffee. Nevertheless, Payal had proposed a 'coffee evening' instead of the 'canteen chai meet-ups' and he'd obliged - primarily for Maan's sake!
Running his fingers through his silky longish hair, the young man placed his mug back on the table and leaned back on the plush sofa as he returned to the game he'd been playing on his Iphone.
Quite consumed by the challenging game, Jalal had remained a silent observer of his group's usual frolic - though he did look up to pitch them a smile whenever the joke got REALLY funny - and it did, many times! After all, his friends could rarely keep it down and this instance was no exception. Ever since they'd set foot in the cafe half an hour ago, they'd been embroiled in their routine pranks - be it Abdul mocking Renu, Renu's snappy answers, Maan provoking the bickering friends, a semi-lost Salim sms-ing his girl in the midst of it all or Payal giggling at the entertaining sights.

Just then, the glass door of the busy cafe swung open with a 'ting' - like it did on every occasion that a customer entered. However; this time HIS glances inadvertently shuffled from his Iphone towards the entrance to catch the new visitor.
Just as he'd thought. It was HER. The tranquility in his eyes instantly took upon the slightest signs of liveliness.

Having noticed Jalal's sudden state of distraction, Renu fell quiet - followed by the rest of the gang. On turning around, they noted Jodha and Meera approaching their table.
Before long, bouts of warm smiles were exchanged between the acquaintances -
'Hi...hi...'
'Hi Jodha..hi Meera...'
'Hey...you both are late...'
'Chalo...baito...'
Placing their bags down, the two ladies helped themselves to the seats available at the table.

Having surveyed most of the 'welcoming' faces on arrival, her gazes then fell upon him - lingering for a few seconds longer than it should have. Her smile gradually faltered, while his steadily picked up. Replacing his cherished Iphone on the table, Jalal responded to the awkwardness in her eyes with an impish nod
'Hello'
'Hello'

'So, what would you like to order?' Renu asked aloud - a candidly indifferent attempt to cease the clumsy spell of silence that'd gone on long enough
'I'll have a cappuccino' Meera replied soon after
'I'll have a hot chocolate' Jodha stood up 'Just give me a sec...I'll place the order and be back...'

Just as she was about to step aside to get to go the counter, Maan beat her to it 'Hey Jo... sit down...this one's on us guys! First time we've all come out together...no way we're letting the ladies pay...'
Jodha was about to disagree, but seeing how her stance was met with disapproving stares all around, she conceded defeat and resumed her seat thereafter. A moment later, she found her glances reverting to him once more. It was disconcerting, because he'd caught her unintentional 'eyeing' of him twice already.
'I've been meaning to ask' he finally addressed her at that point 'About...'
Oh! So, he'd already come around to ask her about their project? He could have at least let her settle down at the table 'Haan yes...' she cut him with an unhappy sigh - speaking up above the surrounding noise so she could be heard 'I haven't completed the presentation yet...I tried referencing but, couldn't find the right books...' she paused 'But, I'm sure I'll get it done in the next couple of days...'

'What?' It took him a second to understand what she was talking about 'Oh...the PROJECT? That's all right...I knew it'd be too much for you anyway...I was going to ask you about something else...just generally catching up...'
'Ufff!' she swore to herself when she heard his reply. He hadn't even meant to ask her about it - why did she have to open her mouth and give herself away?
Detecting Meera's 'I told you so' glares, Jodha rolled her eyes dismissively.
Anyhow, no point crying over spilt milk - she was determined she was going to get her part of the project done in the next few days! Besides, how could she let HIM get away with the 'I knew it'd be too much for you anyway' statement?

A short while later; the chummy batch resumed their chatter - and the laughter ensued once again. Surely enough, everyone delved right into the conversations in no time. Jodha found herself steadily sucked into the topics too - just as much as anyone else. After all, their humour was infectious.

***************Some time later******************

'Favourite movies...' she jumped in delight - she'd ultimately arrived at one of her beloved themes now!

Maan broke out into a semi-bored frown after setting his mug of coffee back on the table. It was nearly an hour into their coffee evening and they'd already gone through many such rounds of discussions. Favourite hobbies, favourite pets, favourite holiday destinations and favourite subjects had been covered so far. Voila - now it was favourite movies! This young lady wasn't really innovative when it came to conversation ideas, was she?
'I don't know Payal...' Maan continued with a thoughtful sigh 'There's too many! You should ask Salim this question instead...he's even made a list of his all-time favourites...'
The ladies watched on puzzled.

'Oh yes...' Jalal smirked - supporting his friend's theory 'Our Salim loves his movies, doesn't he Abdul?'
'Yup!' Abdul chipped in 'He even sheds a tear or two...you know...when the hero dies and all...'
'Shut up!' Salim barked
'Don't lie Salim' Maan grinned 'Didn't you cry in that movie...' he paused as he tried to recall the name 'What was that one yaar...Renu help me out...'
'Raanjhanaa' Renu grinned 'When that Kundan character died...'
Meera, Jodha and Payal were left agape for a second - surely this had to be a joke!

'Don't take their words seriously...' Salim informed the ladies as he physically struggled to shush Abdul's mouth 'I was having a cold on the day...I WASN'T crying!'
Fuelled by the confrontation, Abdul started fighting Salim off and a playful wrestling match ensued between the two pals in no time!
Thoroughly amused by the ongoing bullying and tussling between the men, the three ladies erupted into loud giggles. Such boisterously comical behaviour was new to them - what with their past circles having all been 'female' dominated.

On any other occasion, the generally 'dignified' Jalal would have felt embarrassed by such public display of brawls and strife. However, he didn't feel too bothered this instance. On the contrary, he was enjoying it all just as much. It was the second time that week he'd managed to witness her spell of unrestrained laughter - and it was turning out to be a delightful sight indeed.
'Having said that...' Payal eventually interrupted the fights to resume the topic that had been abandoned half way 'Raanjhanaa was amazing...romance rules...' observing the unconvinced expressions creep up on the men's faces, she went a step further to support her views 'Action and horror sucks!'
With all the men almost simultaneously gagging at her remark, Payal was left more-than-just-flustered. Worse, her friends seemed to be in no mood to support her - they were busy having their share of fun at her expense too.
Watching Payal's disapproving frowns, Maan argued - albeit on a pleasant note 'There are loads of girls who like to watch action, but not ONE guy would prefer romance' he paused 'Except to keep his girlfriend or family happy, of course!'
'Sahi kahaa!' Salim hi-fied

Noting Payal's increasingly grumpy expressions, Meera realized she wasn't enjoying being ganged-upon. So, she gently decided to veer the matter to something else 'Talking of girlfriends, what's your girl's name Salim?'
Salim looked up 'Sana' he replied soon after - the playful grins on his face having now given way to semi-abashed frowns
Abdul mischievously nudged the lover-boy to snap him out of it 'He'll elope and get married to her tomorrow...if given the chance'

'Abe saalon bas karo' Salim was annoyed now 'You guys are just jealous you don't have girl-friends...that's all'
- and With THAT remark, the feverish buzz did abate a bit!
Girlfriends...Crushes...Love...So the proverbial topic had been broached, after all! At the mention of the subject, Jodha cast Jalal a brief glance - the very moment that he'd managed to glimpse at her too. A few seconds later, both stealthily looked away - well aware of what was going on in the other's mind!

'JEALOUS?' Abdul rejoined with false-horror 'We are no Majnus...we're quite happy as we are...'
'Acha? Then, why don't you tell them all your sob stories?'
'What sob story?' Meera had almost lost her smile there - this was getting interesting!
'Oh nothing...' Abdul laughed it off 'He's just referring to our tragic love lives...' he turned to indicate towards the lady sitting adjacent to him 'Renu...well, she's far too much in love with herself...so she's found no man that matches her requirements yet...'
PAT! came Renu's handbag on his head 'Stop it Abdul!'
The mock-violence didn't seem to deter the candidly hilarious Abdul much 'Bichaaraa Maan has wasted half his youth falling in love with his books...'
'But Abdul...' Jalal interrupted his friend with a teasing smirk 'That might be changing sometime soon, I think'
Thanks to his sly hints, all pairs of eyes fell on the not-yet-a-couple duo of Payal and Maan for a second or so.

'Yes...yes...whatever' Maan brushed it all off - refusing to meet eyes with Payal's crimson-red face this time around. Recovering from his sorry plight, he tried steering the matter in another direction 'And Abdul...you've spoken about everyone...conveniently forgot yourself?'
'No I haven't' the sportive young man ridiculed himself 'I keep trying my luck with many lovely ladies...but, no one accepts my proposals' he paused to give Jalal a pat on his back 'Besides, having a friend like Jalal doesn't really help with self-esteem...jisse bhi line maartaa hoon, their gazes end up landing on HIM instead of me...jisse bhi propose karta hoon, they end up having a crush on him!'

Woah! Where did that come from? Jalal hurled his good-for-nothing friend a semi-vindictive frown for having put him in an embarrassing spot in front of these ladies - especially In front of HER!
Bouncing back from the incident thereafter, Jalal went on to reject the facts with an awkward chuckle 'Kuch bhi...yaar'

Nevertheless, SHE'd found the entire spectacle quite entertaining. It was the first time she'd caught HIM blushing - well, nearly!
'So, everyone ends up having a crush on you, huh?' Jodha pondered as she stared at the young man who was now trying to read her surprised frowns 'But which girl - or rather girls - have managed to take YOUR fancy, mister?' she wondered 'And why?'
If only, someone asked him those questions aloud - because she wasn't going to do so herself. IF ONLY!

'What about you, my dear lady?' his sly frowns seemed to question her in return. He had no doubt that many-a-young-man must have proposed to her too 'But has any boy ever taken YOUR fancy? Have you ever had the time to fall in love or is all that too frivolous for you?'
If only, someone asked her those questions aloud - because he wasn't going to do so himself. IF ONLY!

Alas for both; the 'Crushes' conversation didn't proceed that bit further. Unfortunately, it just seemed to die a natural death a few moments later. However, not before Meera had noticed the prolonged spell of unbroken glares and silent questions that had gone on between the two. She'd noticed all of it - their glares, their questions AND Renu's reactions to it too!

RECAP -
Jodha had been unable to keep up her timescales with her project in the 1st week - a fact that bothered her far more than it did him.
The entire group had met for the first time at Cafe Coffee Day - which led to some interesting conversations between all. When the topic of 'love' had come up, Jodha and Jalal's prolonged gazes at each other had a very interesting story to tell - especially to Meera and Renu!

PART 14
December 5th

THE COMPUTER LAB

SPLAT!
Diverted from his state of preoccupation, the young man cast a swift peep at the large-ish folder that had been thumped down on the desk beside him. Mildly taken aback by the sudden act, a faint smile escaped his lips - even before he looked up to welcome the interesting company.
'What's this?' he asked, taking in her captivating grin
'Have a browse' Jodha said, folding her arms with conviction
Calmly leaning back on his seat, he grabbed the file - well aware of what it was all about 'Grab a chair'
Dragging an adjacent chair towards his seat, Jodha took her place beside him - watching his expressions closely as he flipped through the first ten pages. After all, she didn't want to miss even the slightest nuance of surprise when it'd come - and as she'd expected, it surely did!
'WOW!' he nodded his head in part-fascination about fifteen minutes later 'This is impressive...and...'

'Uh huh...' A glimpse of self-satisfaction brightened her already radiant features 'Thanks'
Fiddling with her polished nails, the enthused young lady then wasted no time in talking about the immense research she'd invested to accomplish this. Within the span of the next five minutes, Jalal had received pretty good insight into the various books she'd referenced and all the challenges it'd posed her.
For all of those moments, he did nothing but watch her expressions with a knowing smile. Could anything be more delightfully amusing than her childlike sense-of-pride?
Once he was sure she'd finished, he resumed from where he'd left off 'True...it is all very IMPRESSIVE ...' he paused - expecting she wasn't going to like what was to come 'But...at first glance there are one or two places you've gone wrong...actually, there is an important formula that isn't right...'

'What?' Her frowns went from momentary daze to disbelief to alarm and then mild displeasure 'Can't be...I...I mean...'
Not rattled by her scepticism, Jalal shuffled the project a few pages back till he'd re-spotted the flawed theorem. Picking a pencil, he underlined a long long complex stats formula.
She stared at the one that he'd singled out 'THAT one - but, how?' She'd double-checked, googled AND worked it all out! Then, how could he be so confident?

Not waiting for any acknowledgement from her end, the young man proceeded to explain the hows and whys of his argument to her - drawing the formulae out on blank papers while making his point. Intrigued by how he was going to work it out, she'd remained a silent observer during the course of it - alternatively studying both, his well-devised descriptions on paper and his serious 'work' look.

'Ugh' she sighed to herself after a certain point. Though grudgingly, she had to accept that what he was talking about was beginning to make more sense. Worse, he wasn't even doing it to boast. He was genuinely right - she'd committed a small blunder. Damn! She'd truly truly wished her efforts wouldn't end in such anti-climax!

'Hey' he paused his lengthy clarifications at some juncture - her disappointment quite plain for him to see 'I said what you'd done is not perfect...I didn't say it wasn't IMPRESSIVE!' he paused with an earnest smile 'Trust me when I tell you this...I don't know of anyone else who could have done all this in such short notice...'
'Not even YOURSELF?' she blurted out - and the very next second mentally beat herself up for having betrayed what was in her mind
With that slip-up of hers, his 'work' frowns transformed into more 'devilish' ones 'Are you always so competitive... or is this a trait of yours that's specially reserved for me?'
'What?' the interrogation had caught her off-guard 'I...I...I'm ALWAYS quite competitive' she retaliated
Compelled to break out into a grin at the obvious lie, he patted her shoulder playfully 'Hey...cheer up now...its not like...' and then he stopped - he'd noticed the shock in her eyes. Without realizing it was HER, he'd behaved like he'd do with one of his pals - patting her shoulder and all!

'Sorry!' his grins straightened out in a jiffy as the two attempted to recover from the awkward spell. Watching her stuff her folder back into her bag, Jalal turned ahead to revert to his computer screen.
'Just want to tell you...' he confessed thereafter - his eyes still glued on the monitor in front 'Even if you HADN'T achieved any of this...I'd have little doubt that you're one of the most intelligent young ladies I've met!'
She abruptly stopped what she was doing - she couldn't believe what he'd just said!
'You're just being kind...' she dismissed his confession warily
'No! I'm being honest...' he countered - still not looking in her direction 'If I was being kind, I would have accepted your project...changed the formula myself and NOT let you know about it... you wouldn't have even realized!'

Darn! She didn't even know what to say to that rebuttal of his - this man was so clever with his words. Startled that none of his usual taunts or jibes had followed, she continued observing the side profile of his handsome face as he'd begun typing away at the keyboard once more.
'Thanks' she said eventually
'You're welcome' he smiled, darting her a half-second peek - before returning to his computer yet again.
Just then, he burst out into a bout of loud sniggers.
Jodha grew intrigued 'What is it?'
'I just checked my email...read a joke a friend had forwarded...'
'Oh!'

About twenty seconds later, she came back 'So, what IS it? I'd like to hear it too...'
This time it was HIS turn to be surprised. He turned to read her demeanour - to ensure he hadn't misheard her. So, she wanted to hear his jokes now? She was the most unpredictable adversary he'd ever met!
Examining his puzzled frown, she reiterated 'What's the joke?' why he couldn't be bothered about sharing it with her?
'It might not be to your taste...' he forewarned with a sheepish frown - wondering if there was any hidden agenda behind this unexpected display of curiosity!
However; on catching nothing beyond idle interest, Jalal presumed she just wanted a glimpse into HIS kind of fun. He shrugged his shoulder 'Ok! But, don't tell me I didn't warn you'

Maximising the screen, he moved back so she could read it, while she moved forward
A man is drinking in a bar when he notices a beautiful young lady.
"Hello there and what is your name?"
"Hello," giggles the woman, "I'm Stacey. What's yours?"
"I'm Jim."
"Jim, do you want to come over to my house tonight?"
"Sure!" replies Jim "Let's go!"
At Stacey's house, Jim notices a picture of a man on Stacey's desk and asks, "Is this your brother?"
"No, it isn't, Jim!" Stacey giggles.
"Is it your husband?"
Stacey giggles even more, "No, silly!"
"Then, it must be your boyfriend!"
Stacey giggles even more while nibbling on Jim's ear. She says, "No, silly!"
"Then, who is it?"
Stacey replies, "That's me before my operation!"

While one part of her mind had had an instant 'cheee' reaction, the other part just caved into a chuckle-fit 'You guys are mad'
'Thankfully, that's one of the more decent ones' he remarked with pleasant amazement thereafter 'By the way, didn't think you were the type!'
Jodha defended herself 'Hey just cos I'm conservative doesn't mean I'm a boring prude!' she paused with a smile 'And is that your pet dog? He's cute...'

'Huh?' he then understood she was pointing to his google-icon 'Oh yes...that's Robbie...my German Shepherd...buddaaa hai, but he's my best pal...'
His tone seemed to have a hint of affection as he'd said that. For some strange reason, she appreciated it - maybe because she didn't know that this super-rich bratty senior was capable of such affection too! Quite unlike her 'non-snoopy' self, she unwittingly prodded on -after all, the harder one tried being disinterested - that something or SOMEONE always interested you more'Anyone else...at your place...family...I...mean...'

He cast her an amused stare - stunned by the unusual run of friendliness 'Yes... Ammi... my mom... my dad's no more...so its just the three of us!' he trailed off on a sombre note
She nodded sympathetically 'I heard'

Consequently, another awkward interval followed - till he decided to take the conversation further 'I have another photo somewhere...' he continued 'With my mom...wanna see?'
'Sure'
A second later he couldn't believe he'd just said that, because he generally didn't like disclosing his personal life to anyone. Well, to none other than his closest friends anyway. So, this was something quite unusual for a 'private' person like himself. Nevertheless, grabbing his Iphone he skimmed through his gallery, till he came across one
'There' he handed it to her
Jodha was genuinely impressed by what she saw 'Wow! She's BEAUTIFUL!'

He nodded in agreement - his mother was the most beautiful woman in the world for HIM!
'And YOU'RE a close second...' the notion suddenly popped up somewhere in his head - out of the blue - till he came back to his senses and 'shut up' his monkey-mind!

Blissfully unaware of Jalal's ongoing thought-processes, she spoke up - her manner cordial 'Jalal, I never told you this...but...the main reason I'd picked this project was because it was based on a charity...' she halted hesitantly 'Its based on the old age home your family supports, isn't it?'
'Yes...its called Amal' he said, reverting to a gentle smile
She didn't know if she should ask, but she did anyway 'Any chance I'd be able to visit Amal?'

He broke out into a hearty grin - he was REALLY happy she'd asked 'Definitely...in fact I was thinking that all four of us should go' he suggested 'Maybe over the weekend'
'Makes sense...' she replied, quite pleased 'I'll ask my parents...I'm sure they wouldn't mind...'
He nodded his head in concurrence - if he'd judged her right, he knew she'd be genuinely moved by the entire experience.

*********************************************************************************************
AMAL OLD AGE HOME

As the sun set behind the surrounding tall structures, it skillfully dispersed a uniform radiant orange glow all over the open courtyard that sat in the centre. A delight in itself, the diminishing rays also managed to amplify the beauty of the building's traditional architectural elements just as much.
Having said that, neither could nature's special effects nor could the historical facets hide one obvious truth - the old age home and its surrounding structures were in need of repair. This, despite the obvious care and effort that went into its upkeep by its trustees.

Nevertheless, while the vista of watching a setting sun from the courtyard didn't astound her, the peeling paint and cracks on the walls didn't spoil it for her either. What had really taken her breath away was the earnest smiles she'd noticed on those wrinkled faces - the abandoned elderly finding solace in something as simple as a short visit by 4 youths.

The entire experience had been profoundly heartrending for both Meera and Jodha.
After all, some of the residents' stories were just too tragic - be it the grandma who'd actually forgotten her family altogether, the old cricketer who now had no legs or even how one lovable lady had been thrown out in the middle of the night because of her high medical expenses! By the end, it had taken the two friends a good while to get over the mental trauma - loneliness and ill-health at old age were terrifying evils indeed!

Regardless; while spending time with the elderly had been inspiring in itself, the entire evening had been a shocker for HER in more ways than one. It was also the first time she'd gotten to witness Jalal - a dashing 24 year old in his snug jeans and a classy buttoned shirt - handling the affairs of the place. Needless to say, he appeared to be nothing short of a 'pro' when looking into the office accounts. However; the manner in which he chatted with the residents, dealt with their complaints or even authorized an order of extra shawls for the chilly months was nothing less of an epiphany either!

In fact, not only did he know most of the grandparents by their names, he seemed to be their favourite visitor too - specially if going by what she'd seen and heard the grandparents state about him! Who'd have thought that the 'Ipad man' who'd dragged her to the AD's office three months ago - the man she'd assumed to be the pervy texter - in reality, visited his family's old age home every month?

Anyhow; three hours and many such revelations later, the two young ladies reached the steps of the courtyard and plonked on it - emotionally spent - and to a certain extent physically too!
Before long, they were joined by the other two group-mates.
After a round of weary yet happy smiles, Jalal enquired of his guests 'You all look quite tired...shall I order for some tea and samosas for all of us?'
Even before anyone else could answer for her, Jodha gasped in near-exasperation 'Not again! In the past month, I've had enough Samosas and chai to last me a lifte-time!' she paused to disclose a secret she'd been holding back so long 'I've brought some snacks...would you like to taste something homemade for a change?'

'Neki aur pooch pooch!' Abdul exclaimed instantly

Barely a second after she'd fished them out of the plastic bag, she found the boxes and spoons literally grabbed from her hands by their hungry takers. Furthermore; not only had they snatched their snacks without any reservation, the famished lot seemed to show no signs of slowing down till they reached the very end. This entire weekend-project experience was turning out quite 'picnicy'!

'Hmmm...you know what...' Abdul finally spoke - munching his way through the final morsels 'This masala poha is amazing'
'Yes...' Jalal added - handing out the paper napkins 'And please thank your mom on our behalf!'
Wiping her lips with the tissue, Jodha nodded in reply 'I'd surely compliment her if she'd prepared it...' she paused 'But, this time I made it'
'Wow!' Abdul and Meera exclaimed in near-unison 'You're a talented cook'

Acknowledging the praise with a frisky nod, she turned to examine his expressions - waiting to see what HE had to say!
Delighted to catch her watching him, Jalal teased Jodha with a playful wink 'You're my junior Jodha, but I tell you this shamelessly... I'll do ALL of your projects and assignments for you...just get me something delicious like this everyday!'
'Really?' She smirked at the concealed compliment. Her glances zeroed in on the mischief in his gazes 'Fine then...'
The two then proceeded to share a subtle smile - that somehow only THEY knew the meaning of!

Silently noting the ongoing banter between Jalal and Jodha, Meera and Abdul shared a quiet telling glance - before Abdul re-joined them in the yapping of course.

Soon after, Meera cast a quick glance at her watch - it was nearly 7pm.
She looked up at the young lady who was still engrossed in conversation - the one who used to rush back home from university at 5pm sharp, till less than a month ago that is!
Albeit slowly, but things were surely beginning to change 'You're enjoying this project-work, aren't you Jodha? Enjoying this more than even you know...'

RECAP

Jodha thought she'd completed her first milestone in the project - but, Jalal had spotted a fault in a formula that had annoyed her. Nevertheless, the two had inadvertently ended up chatting/catching up through jokes, family, pets etc! Finally, she'd revealed that she wanted to see the old age home the thesis was being conducted on. When the four had visited the old age home, it had been a revelation of 'sorts' for Jodha when she'd seen the charitable/responsible side to Jalal. The group had rounded it off with Jodha's home-made Poha.

Jalal-Jodha's subtle expressions thereafter had been noticed by both Meera and Abdul.

PART 15

December 16th

THE GYM

CLANG - JAM - CLANG - JAM - CLANG - JAM - CLANG - JAM

The rhythmic clanking of metal against metal in the extravagantly stocked 'strength-training' area of the large-ish hall was incessant. After all, the chic Latitudes Pro gym was at it crowded-most.

'38...39...40...argggh!' he let out a low guttural yell as he plonked the hefty barbells on their stand.

Dropping himself on the cushioned seat to catch a few breaths, the invigorated young man grabbed his towel to wipe his face and neck.

'Maybe you wanna wipe that permanent half-grin off your face now too?'

'Huh?' Jalal looked up, somewhat confused 'What?'

'You were smiling to yourself when you stepped in at quarter part 7...it's nearly 8 AM and you're pretty much doing the same!' Abdul took a sip of water from his bottle - before grabbing a seat on an empty exercise machine nearby 'So, she's taken your fancy, haan?'

Jalal shrugged his shoulder with a suspicious grin 'WHO?'

Abdul gave him the not-too-impressed stare 'Its gone on long enough between you two now...half the college is...'

'College-goers gossip...' Jalal cut his buddy with a jovial smirk 'That's what they do, my pal!'

Since the man was not taking his words seriously, Abdul decided to step up the game 'I've known you for 15 years...and I can say that the look on your face whenever you see HER...is NOT something I've seen ...'

'Hey...hey...hey' he stopped his friend from shooting away any further into this unexpected round of interrogation 'Just to be sure...WHO exactly are you referring to...'

'Cut the crap Jalal...you know who I'm talking about...'

The young man shook his head in the negative 'Nope'

Abdul wasn't in the mood for guessing games 'Jodha'

A smile instantly escaped Jalal's lips. Not that he had no idea where this was heading - yet, when the name came up, he couldn't really stop the darned crimson from tinting his face 'Jodha?' he looked up at Abdul - who was quite clearly deciphering his expressions throughout 'She's a nice girl...I like her company...nothing more...'

'Oh! So, THAT explains why every evening you keep glancing at your watch till she joins us at the library ... sometimes Meera and I don't even exist while you both disappear into your own little worlds...'

Jalal had to halt there for a second - as he came to terms with the facts that had been brought out in the open 'Arre...nothing like that...we're just friends yaar...'

'Just friends haan?' waiting for the 'accused' to glance back at him, Abdul nodded in mock-rebuke 'I must say, you both are definitely quite a flirtatious pair for being JUST friends'

'Are we then?' Jalal questioned with a naughty frown. The overt teasing was beginning to take him by real surprise!

Abdul raised his brow in wonder 'Abe...why deny it... you don't even seem to have much issue being teased with her?'

'Don't I?' Jalal winked. He then gave his interrogator a sportive pat to snap him out of it 'Basss! Now let's get going...or we'll get late'

Watching his spirited buddy alight from the machine and pick his belongings, Abdul's smile waned a bit. He'd teased Jalal about the interesting developments so long - but, in reality his mind wasn't truly into it this time - and for reasons only he knew 'I don't know how to tell you this yaar...I'm generally happy if you're happy...but, this instance I have to confess I'm slightly worried...about where all this is heading...she is not your type Jalal...not your type at all...I fear this is going to lead to heartbreak for you... I hope I'm wrong!'

THE SINGH HOUSEHOLD

SIZZLE-SPLUTTER- SIZZLE-SPLUTTER- SIZZLE-SPLUTTER

'Hmmm' she sniffed the ingredients as she leaned over the kitchen counter - the sights and smells of the swirling pasta sauce were nothing short of an assault on her senses.

'Hmm' her quieter company joined in - on a slightly less exhilarated note. It was nearing 8 AM and she had to return a library book before classes started. With her two wheeler at the garage, Meera had ironically decided to make her way to college with her friend to save herself some time that day. How was she to know that Jodha had taken it upon herself to embark on this elaborate 'desi pasta' recipe that very morning?

'God' Jodha suddenly exclaimed in annoyance, as she continued brusquely stirring the ladle 'Why IS the sauce still sticking to the bottom of the kadai?'

'Because you haven't added any oil!' Meera reminded her - her arms folded in mild disdain 'Couldn't we have just gotten something from the canteen?'

'No Meera...' Jodha managed to give her dubious pal a brief peep - before returning to the difficult dish 'I feel bad asking bhaiyya for money everyday...besides, canteen food is unhealthy...and oil is so NOT good for your health!'

'Hmmm' Meera didn't appear too convinced by the otherwise sensible theory 'Something tells me you weren't ALWAYS this health conscious...' she swiftly poked her friend's slim-ish curvy waist 'Dieting haan?'

'Oy!' Jodha had nearly jolted in response to the ticklish antic 'It's good to start some day na...'

'Ya right' Meera thought to herself - seeing how this someday had conveniently coincided with the week that their group study evenings had kick-started. She then cast a peep into the large kadai 'Amount kuch zyaadaa nahin hai?'

'Budhu' Jodha quipped while adding the remaining spices and salt 'Obviously, its not for me alone!'

Meera slapped her forehead in ridicule 'Oh yes...how could I forget...its for all FOUR of us...' she paused to make a light-hearted taunt 'Thanks to a certain someone, I'm getting to taste a great variety of delicacies lately!'

'What do you mean?' she put on a sorry pout 'I've ALWAYS brought some for you too... but... since four of us sit together in the evenings these days, it'd be rude if I didn't get them some...'

'Uh huh...I understand' Meera nodded sceptically. Observing the beautiful chef who was now busy making the final tweaks to her pasta, she went on to make another point 'Light blue polish on fingers and toes...to match your crepe salwar...ooh la la...'

Switching off the gas stove, she turned to face Meera with a disapproving stare 'What ARE you trying to say?'

'Just that...' Meera shrugged nonchalantly 'Dressing kaafi smart hai...'

Jodha placed her hand on her hips in a glamdoll-like pose 'I've ALWAYS dressed smartly!'

'NO doubt...but, now-a-days you're exceptionally prim and proper!' Meera's tone dropped to a near-whisper 'All the more reason for HIM to keep gazing at you...'

Jodha's eyes widened in alarm 'WHO?'

'Cut the crap Jo...you know who I'm talking about...' Meera observed how her friend's innocent questioning frowns didn't budge 'I'm talking of Jalal...who else...its so obvious now...half the college is...'

'Shhh' Jodha had to nearly spring forth to shut her friend's jabbering 'Mama... papa... bhaiyya - ALL are sitting in the living room...' eventually recoiling her fingers, Jodha wasted no time in dismissing her startled pal's claims 'Arre kuch bhi yaar...he's good time-pass company, that's all...waise bhi, he's such a big flirt...that's how he looks at half the girls in college...'

'Good time-pass haan?' Meera rolled her eyes 'Well...thankfully he doesn't gaze at ME like that...or I wouldn't have managed to achieve anything productive this month'

Catching the lady's wary expressions, Jodha gave her a displeased look 'STOP IT! Stop imagining things and making pointless assumptions...you were getting late, right? Let's leave...'

Perceiving the creeping discomfort in the air, Meera wisely chose to let it go. Instead, she restarted the chatter on a totally different tangent 'By the way, Jo...has your family given you permission for the new year's party?'

With the shift in topic, Jodha's childlike chirpiness instantly returned 'Not yet! Mama... bade bhaiyya... kranti bhaiyya... NONE are convinced...they don't think I should be staying out till midnight partying with guys and all' she went on to drop the snack-boxes into a large plastic bag 'As it is, they're not too happy with my staying back late at college everyday - but, they've agreed for the sake of the dissertation...the New year party, I don't know about...'

The friend watched on in silence - it was obvious from Jodha's engrossed chatter that she really wanted to attend the party this time - and Meera knew she'd make it happen somehow! Six weeks ago when she DIDN'T want to attend Jalal's birthday bash, no amount of 'come on's and 'please's from her girlfriends had swayed her otherwise. Now, that she WANTED to make it to this New Year's gala, she'd get her way with her family - she was very capable that way!

**********************************************************************

SPORTS GROUND - THE FOOTBALL MATCH

'This way...this way...this way...jaldi...jaldi...'

'Pass it to Salim...pass the bloody ball man...'

'There...f**king hell...move faster...Anand...'

'Yayyy!' 'Shittt!'

'God!' she thought to herself as she caught the barrage of swearing, abuses and vulgar signage that were hurled back and forth between the amateurs. Obviously, she wouldn't have had an opportunity to witness it all had the three ladies not been on their way to the computer lab that late noon. However, since they'd come across the 'friendly' football match en route, they'd stopped by to follow it - subsequently becoming a part of the twenty-odd spectators at the periphery of the grounds. Their journey to the lab had surprisingly taken a brief hiatus ever since!

'What was it with sports and men that turned them into such incoherent crazed beasts?' she'd wondered as she'd made the unwitting halt.

Why, even the generally dignified Jalal had donned a different avtaar here! Precisely why she was never one to care for this sport. At least, cricket was graceful!

After a short while of viewing how twenty two testosterone-driven males challenged each other over a ball, her wary glimpses subconsciously fell upon ONE such testosterone-driven male! There was no mistaking how competitive HE got in the heat of the moment - the raging intensity in his manner was obvious! Additionally equipped with brutish physical strength, his tenacity made Jalal an athlete to watch out for!

Much as she generally wasn't one to be 'awed' by physical forms - she could very well see why OTHER women would be awed by his.

Imagine topping all of that raw manly appeal with exquisite features - features that glistened even more when sweaty - be it the handsome face, the fair neck or even the broad chest. Not to mention, the dark red wet t-shirt that now clung to his body - making his muscular physique look all the more - well, muscular!

'Jodha...what are you doing?'

What! The dazed young lady was literally startled by the callout - and by herself! It took a few seconds just to shake the feeling away. What the HELL had she just been doing? Had she just been 'eyeing' him?

Quite disappointed with herself, Jodha spent a few seconds chiding her wild mind before turning to face her friends. Thank the God that humans weren't mind readers!

'What is it Payal?' she said, putting on a clumsy smile to cover up for the deed she'd just indulged in!

'Chalna hai, yaa nahi?' Payal continued 'We've been loitering here for twenty minutes...'

The suggestion was abruptly cut-short by the shrill sounds of the referee's whistle. Time was up! The match had come to its end. Just as the winning team had begun celebrating, he managed to notice their presence amongst the spectators. Surely enough, his echoes rang through straight after 'Hey...Jodha...Payal...Meera...'

Before long, he'd left his joyous retinue of footballers to join the trio outside the grounds to greet them 'Hey...we're meeting up at the library as usual...later on na...' he paused 'By the way, I didn't know you all were watching...or I'd have been better-behaved in the match!'

Catching their gushing smiles in response, he winked at them friskily - before turning to face HER 'You follow football? You liked it?'

'I follow our desi sport...Cricket!' she muttered. Obviously, she avoided the second question

'Ha! Football is as desi as Cricket is...'

She nodded 'That's true...' he was right. After all, both sports were British legacies!

Studying her ongoing silence, he wondered if he'd offended her 'cricketing' sentiments 'Hey I didn't say I don't adore Tendulkar and Dravid...'

With that statement, she was compelled to break out into a smile - as would any other Indian!

'Waise...' he continued reading her mesmerizing expressions 'Our Inter-collegiate match is coming up in a few weeks...will you be around to watch us then?'

She let out an uneasy sigh. She had had no intentions of attending them, but how could she politely refuse? Why did he always have to put her in such difficult situations?

He knew precisely what she was contemplating - so, he upped the stakes a bit 'To support our University maybe...'

'I don't know...' she faltered hesitantly

His eyes mellowed 'To support ME maybe...'

This time Jodha had to look up. She initially fought his soft gazes with stern glares, but the tussle didn't last long. A short while on and she found herself caving in - his eyes had that effect. Even if she tried to, she simply couldn't find the heart to spurn the seeming warmth in those dark brown eyes.

However, what she DID do was take a good while to respond.

'I might come' she concluded 'To support the University!' and she stressed on the University with a playful smirk!

'Wow' he thought to himself as he caught her smiles at their effervescent best - AGAIN! For being obstinately competitive otherwise, he didn't seem to mind her having the upper hand. After all, 'winning' brought about the most bewitching grins on her face ever.

As the pleasant spell continued, Jodha eventually caught on to the fact that they'd been gazing at each other. Quickly remembering Meera's words from that morning, she broke away from his stares. Her semi-awkward glances then fell upon her friends, who were obviously not-too-pleased about having been ignored so long!

Just then, an angry voice unexpectedly interrupted the light-hearted exchanges 'Jalal! What ARE you doing here?'

Jalal, Jodha, Meera and Payal turned around to catch the irate young lady who was now storming towards them. She was evidently unhappy about something!

'Renu?' he welcomed her 'Hey...hi...'

'I've been trying to call you...' she reproached him as soon she caught up with the group 'You have my notes, remember?'

'I had a match yaar...' he tried placating her frayed nerves 'I was just about to...'

'Your match finished 10 minutes ago Jalal...so, stop fibbing!' her tirade showed no signs of abating 'You have no issues missing my calls lately...thanks to HER' she gave Jodha a dirty look 'You NEVER miss her calls when with our group, do you? Why is SHE suddenly more important than us?'

Jodha was appalled!

That Renu didn't like Jodha much was no secret - but, this outburst had definitely shocked all present - ESPECIALLY him! Was it the effect of having bottled her frustrations so long?

Regardless; it'd upset everyone - more so Jodha. From Jalal's flummoxed reaction, it was obvious the friends had never had such a spat before. Though she knew it was really no fault of hers, the last thing she wanted was to drive the wedge between two good friends!

RECAP

When Abdul had queried Jalal about his feelings for Jodha, Jalal had neither accepted nor denied the notion. Nevertheless, Abdul was worried about the affair as a whole. Meera had questioned Jodha about Jalal's 'special' attention on her, but Jodha had brushed it off. However, Meera hadn't failed to notice that Jodha's overall attitude towards Jalal was changing. At college, Jodha had watched Jalal playing football for the first time and unknowingly ended up eyeing the handsome man in action. Later on, when Jalal had invited Jodha to watch his match she eventually relented. However, the pleasantries had ended on a bitter note when Renu barged in with a tirade.

PART 16

December 31st

THE SINGH HOUSEHOLD

The streets were festive - the following day was a National holiday.

Everyone was busy wishing one another at work, over phone or at home. Texts and FB messages were flooded with celebratory words of all sorts - 'Hope', 'Prosperity' and 'Fortune' being the most popular choices, of course!

It was the end of a glorious 2013 - the city was gearing up to welcome the New Year!

Yet, the atmosphere in the Singh household was tense. Merrymaking was on hold. There was a pressing issue to sort out first!

'And this is why your desk has been so immaculate for the past two weeks...don't assume I don't understand' the stern lady's outburst ensued 'Your behaviour has been changing lately Jodha...you take very long to get dressed for college...hamesha ladkon ke saath mobile pe khusar pusar... and what's with all this make up...'

'Mama...' she argued back 'Its just eyeliner and lip gloss! Besides, these 'ladke' are my seniors with whom I'm doing my thesis!'

'Jodha' bade bhaiyya butted in - his expressions hadn't changed much since the furor had started 'You stay back late at college with friends these days...we say nothing...now, you're refusing to come to our apartment party and want to go out with them on New Year's eve too?'

'B...but...bhaiyya...' and with that she lost track of her well-rehearsed script! With six pairs of eyes scrutinizing her every action and word for 40 minutes now, it was bound to happen sometime.

At that moment, she felt nothing short of victimized - all this hoohah just because she wanted to attend a late-night party with friends ONE day in the year! While her brothers were permitted to stay out however long they willed, rules shifted only when it came to HER. She'd heard the 'Not safe for girls' and 'What'll people say' reasoning so many times, she could scream! Worse, chote bhaiyya had been evidently enjoying the grill-Jodha session all through.

Regardless; this wasn't the time to lose it. Her friends had been waiting long enough for her - the missed calls icon flashing on her phone screen was a constant reminder of it. She HAD to pursue with her efforts and continue convincing her family somehow!

So, she resumed her act - ensuring her expressions were as heart-tugging as they could be 'Mama I study for 300 days of the year...I'm only asking for one evening off...all to myself...'

'Acha?' her mother nodded her head sarcastically - wholly aware of her rebellious daughter's ploys 'I work ALL 365 days of the year...and I don't get anything in return...'

'Wohi tho...' Jodha put her hands around the woman affectionately 'I've told you many times...ki ma...come along...I'll take you to such parties... you'll have fun...but no...YOU are the one who refuses!' she paused with a naughty wink 'Can you imagine how spectacular you'd look if you put on some make up and tried on something different for a change!'

'Stop it...' the mother chided her 'And can't you wear a proper salwar? Itna tight kameez kyun... ajeeb hai!'

Disheartened, she glimpsed at her dress and back at her mom 'Mama...its stylish!'

'Hey Mama...'

Jodha looked up in alarm! The fresh intruder was chote bhaiyya - like things weren't bad enough already! Wasn't he satisfied playing 'The entertained audience' so long? What was he going to come up with to muddle things further now?

'Bhaiyya...' he spoke up in his usual sleepy tone 'Why are you restricting her so much? Waise bhi in a year's time she might get married ...then, she's not going to get such freedom later on... this could be the last year she'd get to freak out with friends...waise, the club she's going to is pretty decent... its near her college...trust me!'

WOW! Did he just say that? She couldn't believe he'd just tried to sway the family in her favour! Though the shaadi-card was one card she didn't want to use since she hated the topic - seeing her family's silenced stance, she couldn't really complain.

Catching his you-owe-me-big-time grin she lipped him a quiet 'Thank you' before taking the lead again 'Besides, I'm going with my friends in a car and they'll drop me back too - as safe as it gets!'

There was a whole minute of silence, before her bade bhaiyya finally decided to end the suspense 'OK! Is your mobile fully charged?'

'YUP!' she nearly squealed in excitement. She knew it - the emotional blackmail had to work 'Bhaiyya, I'll give you a call as soon as I reach there and before I start!'

'Listen...' her mother interrupted her sudden frenzy. Standing up from the sofa, she approached her daughter, took a bit of kohl from her eyes and did the kaalaa teeka routine!

Pleasantly surprised by the exaggerated gesture of protectiveness, Jodha darted her a playful frown 'I thought my kameez was 'ajeeb'!'

'Jo bhi ho...' the mother grumbled 'Now stay safe...take your shawl too...'

'Ok...ok...ok...' she rushed 'Bye mama...papa...bhaiyya 1, 2 & 3, bhabhi...see you later!'

Obviously, the rest of their instructions fell on semi-deaf ears - Jodha was too busy doing more important things like zipping up her handbag and slipping on her sandals!

IN THE SILVER AUDI

He cast another casual glimpse at the black Tag Heuer on his wrist - they'd been huddled in the car for nearly 45 minutes now. Letting out a low sigh, he switched off the radio - he'd listened to enough New year messages and dedications on the radio to last him a lifetime.

'Yaar...' he finally addressed the man sitting beside him on the passenger seat 'Everyone's reached the club na...'

'Yup' Abdul answered while stretching his hands out to wake his sleepy limbs

'You should have gone ahead with the rest of them...'

'Naa!' Abdul refuted 'Parking would be a problem there...anyway, another half an hour here... and YOU'RE treating me to booze and dinner in this very car!' he didn't want his friend feeling too guilty about their unexpectedly long wait outside Jodha's house, but he couldn't help making his trademark wisecrack either

Responding to the jovial jibe with a semi-grin, Jalal continued looking ahead as he'd been doing so long - peering through the windshield of his silver Audi at the night skies!

'You've been quieter than usual today...' Abdul enquired a minute later - his tone more sober this time 'Some problem?'

'Nope' Jalal shrugged 'Kyun...'

'Renu and Jodha are meeting each other first time after that spat two weeks ago...are you worried about how they'll react?' the friend'd eventually spoken what was on his mind

'Not really...' the pensive young man halted for a second, adjusting a cuff link that'd come undone from the sleeve of his smart black shirt 'Everything should be fine...I spoke to Jodha and then had a long chat with that pagli Renu the other day...' Jalal then turned to face his best buddy - his manner still quite serene 'Yaar, Renu's my closest friend...I'll always be there for her...by her side...put up with all her mood swings and woman-waala problems...' he continued assertively 'But, without good reason I'm NOT letting her dictate who I should speak to...whose calls I should attend...who I should meet ...' he paused 'Or who I should have a crush on!'

Voila - and with that last significant add-on, the two men fell silent for a good while - till Abdul hurled him a few frowns that reflected his questions 'Dude...did you just say what I thought you did?'

Jalal replied with a mischievous look that translated to 'Maybe...'

'Oh!' Abdul finally let out a confused snigger 'So, got the truth off your chest at last?'

Watching his friend's reactions, Jalal smirked at the sarcasm 'Cut me some slack yaar...you were the one who asked me to face facts...' he paused with an intriguing smile -to phrase the words right and possibly to curb the warm flush that was beginning to spread to his face 'I mean...I've always been attracted to her personality, her guts and honesty...but...now, I think it might be something more...'

'WOW!' Abdul raised his brow in wonder - Jalal's expressions were letting on more than his words were 'You going to let her know?'

'When the time's right...' he paused stoically 'She's only begun chatting with me since this project started!'

'And what about her? Do you think SHE has feelings for you too?'

'Don't know...who knows what goes on in these ladies' minds...' Jalal mulled on a mischievous note 'But of what I've observed, I can say she doesn't dislike the attention!'

Just then, he fell silent. He'd spotted a distant silhouette in the car park walking towards his car - HER silhouette!

Almost impulsively, his heart skipped a beat. His entranced eyes softened. A playful grin escaped his lips as he checked out the junior who was parading his way.

Nah, he wasn't too perturbed that Abdul was watching him all along. He had other essential things that he needed to attend to - like the 'special' smile she'd just broken into - a smile that was increasingly being reserved only for him!

THE CLUB

Semi-dimmed lights bouncing off disco balls, DJ party tunes blaring through the loudspeakers, the smell of alcohol and food permeating the air, the chatter of young men and women, crowded tables, an even more crowded dance floor - the backdrop of the posh club was typical of such a gala affair!

Helping herself to a sip of the ice-cold coca cola that'd just been delivered to their table, she casually surveyed the people around her. At first impression, she realized that she felt a bit 'out of place' - the loud ambience was alien to her.

Nevertheless; smiling at the few familiar college-mates she'd spotted in the busy hall, Jodha was about to revert to her friends when she incidentally noticed a startling scene. Two supposed lovers in a dark corner were indulging in some semi-obscene form of PDA.

Appalled, the young lady looked away in a flash! She decided she was going to stick to facing HER group - and them alone for the rest of the evening.

'Jodha' Meera casually resumed the conversation from where she'd left off 'I knew you'd be late...but 1 hour?' she put down her glass of sprite 'I was bored sitting here by myself...Renu has kept herself busy with everyone else cos she doesn't wanna talk...Salim's been with Sana all eve...' she darted the lady beside her an angry glare 'And Payal would scoot off to the dance floor with Maan whenever he beckoned...'

'Hey not my fault' Payal whined 'You didn't join when we invited you!'

'And be the kebab-mein-haddi?' Meera rebuffed

'Girls' she broke-up their playful tiff with a guilty smile 'Sorry for having stranded you here...it took me a long time to convince mama and bhaiyaa...' she glimpsed at Payal 'I still can't believe your chacha dropped you here...he's so cool with all this!'

Meera flashed her pal an understanding smile 'We're ok Jo...at least better off than the poor chaps who waited in your parking lot for all that while' she turned to indicate to the man who was now busy chatting with some friends near the overcrowded bar 'By the way, Jalal looks so smart in those boots and all, na?'

'Uh huh' Jodha muttered coolly 'As always!' the thought popped in her head

Tossing a subsequent gaze his way, a mild haze glossed over the sparkle in her eyes as she observed the engrossed young man - there was just something about him that...

Just then, her reverie was abruptly disturbed by the sudden barging-in of an unwelcome visitor at their table!

'Hey...' the hefty young man addressed the group 'Can I join you lot?'

Waiting for no invitation, he helped himself to a seat soon after.

Dismayed, the three ladies glanced at each other in annoyance - what the hell was Shareef doing at their table? On a good day, he was horrible enough to put up with. This eve he looked like he'd had plenty of alcohol too!

Noticing HER evident aversion to him, the man erupted into a vile grin 'Hey, Jo! Don't look so disgusted...I've tried being friendly with you many times since that ragging incident ... but, you don't seem very forthcoming...I'm not all that bad, you know?' he paused to glance around 'Come with someone?'

'Yeah!' Meera cut him 'The rest of our group must be returning to the table soon...'

Shareef put on an expression of mock-surprise 'Who, Jalal's group?' he signalled to Jodha 'You've been hanging around with his gang a lot lately, haven't you?' he started whispering - appearing like a moron as he did so 'Waise, many think Jalal's cool and all...but, trust me...he's up to no good...I've heard he just goes around with girls till they hold his fancy and then he dumps them!'

The flabbergasted ladies sat up in panic - those words - were eerily familiar! In less than a second, their expressions had changed from one of revulsion to one of utter shock!

'Jodha!' Meera gasped, piecing the puzzle 'His words...the text message...'

Trying to make sense of the revelation, Jodha continued to remain dumbstruck for a few seconds till she finally found her voice and sense of rationality 'Girls...later...' the matter could get out of hand there - it was not the time or place for confrontations.

However, there was no stopping Payal. Jumping to Jodha's support, she subjected the brute to a harsh glare 'So, YOU'VE been sending her those harassing texts, right? What the hell...'

'Girlsss...' Jodha shushed them again 'Not now!'

'God!' Meera overrode Jodha - her protective instincts seemed to have kicked in too 'So, YOU've been hassling her...sending that filth about staying away from Jalal ...about how he's a womanizer and all!'

'Wow!' Shareef erupted into a joyous bout of claps 'Wonder who sent those...'

'Hey...what's going on...' came the authoritative voice out of the blue.

Jodha looked up in alarm - and at Jalal. Having been preoccupied by the situation so far, she hadn't noticed him approaching them!

'What are YOU doing here?' he greeted Shareef, not-so-kindly. Well, there was no way he was going to be 'kind' to the guy who'd taken over his table during his brief absence!

Jodha felt a low 'Oh! No' yell go off in her head - everything was happening faster than she could get a hold on. If the already-displeased Jalal learnt of the their talks, he'd be even MORE displeased. She was just about to divert the awkward situation by changing the topic, but alas!

'Hi JALAL...' he welcomed the accoster 'I was catching up with Jo yaar...she was just telling me about some texts she received few weeks ago...something about how you're a womanizer and all!'

DAMN, the tipsy idiot! What did he just do?

The colour drained from her face, as she watched Jalal's seething response to Shareef a second later 'What did you just say?'

Thumping his beer can on the table, the hot-blooded young man clenched his palm in fury. His first reaction was to drill some sense into the oaf's head - that is, till he realized that his drunk classmate wasn't making up stories.
His subsequent glance had fallen on Jodha's face and the troubled semi-guilty look in her eyes had given everything away!

December 31st

THE CLUB

Ignoring Shareef for the moment, Jalal looked at her - his brows knotted into a distressed frown as he did so 'Did you really receive such texts about me?'

She gradually nodded her head in the positive 'A few weeks ago' her voice was quite low

He uttered not a word in question for a few seconds thereafter, but the immense disappointment in his eyes spoke volumes 'Wow, Jodha! Like, REALLY? You've been receiving such obscene messages about me...and you didn't even bother telling me about it? I expected better from you!'

'No Jalal!' Jodha grimaced in silence, letting her expressions convey her regret. She was well aware of the misgivings in his mind 'It's not like you think...I'm so sorry...I'll explain everything later!'

'Whatever!' he glanced away in defiance - brushing off her sorry look. Be it any reason, he couldn't deny that the unpleasant events had somehow disillusioned him about her 'transparency' - at least briefly!

Watching his response, her heart sank. The last time he'd been upset with her, she didn't remember feeling half as bad about it.

SNAP!

The loud click of fingers - right in front of her face brought her to reality.

Following his rude gesture, Shareef butted-into the pair's quiet exchanges 'Hey! What are you both on about?' he burst into a wide smile 'Chalo...forget all this...its the New Year...the time to rejoice...to celebrate...let's all dance!'

'What the hell!' Jodha muttered in frustration. After having raised such a storm, he was now suggesting a group dance to cool it off? This guy couldn't be serious!

The obvious indifference to his suggestions didn't seem to put him off, because Shareef'd already stood up - ready to jive to the next number 'Hey...ladies quit staring at me like that...cheer up...' he halted 'Oho...still angry about the texts? Hey, I was only kidding...I laughed at the messages, because I found them funny...I didn't send them...actually...I don't even know Jodha's number...'

Huh? There was a brief 'Could he be telling the truth' glance swapped between Jodha, Meera and Payal - but, the momentary peace was again disturbed by another of his drunken antics.

Stepping forth to where she was sitting, he proceeded to offer the young lady his palm 'Forget about the rest Jodha...you come with me...let's dance!'

Jodha and her friends were shocked - the man was clearly not in his senses!

'No she'll not join you' came his stern reply thereafter. The man who'd remained deliberately quiet the last couple of minutes decided to be not-be-so-quiet any more!

'Kyaa!' Shareef turned to view his challenger. Even in his inebriated state, he seemed to find the backlash unjustified 'She can speak up for herself...she's not your girl, is she?'

While Jodha was left nearly aghast by his cheeky remark, Shareef pressed on 'Come on Jodha'

Just as he was about to extend his hand out to her once again, he was stopped in his tracks - by a heavy grasp on his shoulder.

'I know she can speak for herself, but she's here with ME now...' came Jalal's answer a second later

WHAT! Taken aback, she shot him a 'Did you just say that?' stare. Jodha didn't even know if she should feel relieved or confused about Jalal's stance - she definitely knew she was beginning to feel quite agitated by it all, though!

'Oh!' Shareef nodded Jalal with mock-amazement 'Jodha, he says you're with him...so, are you HIS girl then?'

'W...what' the uneasy young lady stuttered. What the hell was she supposed to say to that and WHY did she even have to answer this dork?

Her subsequent glance then fell upon Jalal to catch his reaction to the increasingly uncomfortable queries - just as he darted her a swift steely stare. This time however, she couldn't gauge his thoughts - everything was masked by the growing aggravation in his eyes!

'See Jalal...' Shareef confronted him once more - while removing the guy's hand from his shoulder 'I told you...she's not answering...she doesn't think of herself as your girl...'

'Shareef..' Jalal's indignance had clearly risen a few notches 'You're wasted man...you don't know what you're saying...so, better back off...I tell ya...'

'I...I'm in no mood to dance...' she interrupted the hostile classmates - she couldn't believe what the entire thing was turning into - and at the cost of her turning into a royal spectacle 'So, let's just...'

'Hey ok...' Shareef cut her 'Let's not fight over this ok?'

Leaning close to Jalal, he then said something that ONLY the furious young man could hear 'Waise, Jalal why don't you have a dance with her...cool yourself down...and then I have one...that way we don't have to squabble over something so silly...we can share her on the dance floor and in other err ...you know what I mean' he ended it with an immodest wink

'That's ENOUGH' Jalal grit his teeth - investing all of his will to curb his repressed temper

Shareef would have stopped himself there had he seen the repercussions of his lewd comments on Jalal. Pity he was so drunk, he didn't notice any of the looming signs on his opponent - not the bloodshot eyes, not the clenched jaw or even the hardened fist!

'What do you say Jalal...' Shareef prodded the restrained man once again - with a whisper 'This should be interesting... She's sexy enough for both..'

BAM! Arghhh! BAAAM!

ON THE STEPS - OUTSIDE THE CLUB

'Stop it... guys...' 'Jalal break it off...' 'Shareef you bloody idiot get lost from here...' 'Jalal...he's already bleeding!' 'Sirs, if you don't stop now, I'm going to have to call the police' 'Ufff W*F..STOP men!'

'JALAL! WHAT HAS GOTTEN INTO YOU?'

And with that last lament, the mad violence showed its first signs of abating, ever since it'd begun fifteen minutes ago. Jalal's grip eventually loosened from Shareef's collar - and it wasn't Renu's shrill yell that managed it, it was her choice of words! If not; Abdul, Salim and Maan jointly had been unable to haul their possessed friend away from Shareef so long - be it, inside the club or on the steps that the brawl had spilled out onto.

'What the hell has happened to you?' Renu then stormed up to him as soon as it was safe to do so 'What did Shareef say that warranted such a reaction from you?' handing him a bottle of water - she continued with earnest concern 'Jalal, you used to think so lowly of people who got into club brawls...you used to stay away from such places, remember? Kya hua ab?'

Jalal stared at her in perturbed silence as he caught up on his breath. Grabbing the water from her a second later, the thirsty assailant downed the entire bottle before going on to observe the equally bewildered expressions on the faces of his remaining friends. He knew not what to say to them. What HAD gotten into him?

He glanced at his scratched fists, at the broken button on his ruffled Van Heusen shirt and then at the victim who was now being attended to by the club staff. Not only were Shareef's teeth bleeding profusely, his battered face probably needed a couple of stitches too!

Then, his anguished gazes fell upon the hush young lady standing at the far corner with her group. The agony in her eyes couldn't be missed. She'd done nothing for it to happen so and she could do nothing to stop it - but, somehow she'd turned out to be the reason for the discordance! It was obvious the entire experience had left her with a sour taste in her mouth!

Right away observing the troubled pair's stares, Renu stepped in and nudged him by his elbow 'Chalo Jalal...lets go back in now...lets forget about all this...let's celebrate the New Year..'

Her words were immediately cut short by a burly security guard who'd blocked their entrance 'No ma'am! You all may go back in, but we cannot let Sir go back in! Not after what's happened! The rest of the guests will question our security measures...I hope you understand'

There was a long spell of silence as the high-profile group had to come to terms with yet another disgraceful development pitched their way.

Just as Abdul and Maan were about to vouch for their friend, Jalal retaliated on a harsh note - his dissipated temper building up again 'Murthy ji ...you KNOW me well enough...I'm a gold card member here...' he paused 'And where were you lot when that man was creating problems...misbehaving with my friend...'

The guard's expressions didn't reflect much remorse 'Sir, we understand - that man has also been evacuated...but, we cannot permit you to go in...not today sir!' he was well aware of Jalal's social standing and influential connections, but some significant rules were broken that night.

'Fine!' Jalal's acknowledgement came a moment later 'Let my friends return to the party...I'll leave now...' he intensified the vindictiveness in in his tone 'But, I WILL ensure I get back at the management...I'll make sure they compensate me for this!' and there was absolutely no doubt he'd do it!

Renu, Abdul, Maan and Salim were left agape. They couldn't believe what was happening.

'Fine...enjoy your New year...' Renu wished him, evidently dismayed 'Maybe with your new 'friend'...' she then charged back into the club, without waiting for the rest!

As the disappointed men threw each other and Jalal plenty of 'What yaar' glares, he tried calming them with 'It's ok' frowns. True, he was disheartened too - it was the first time he wasn't going to be with friends on a special occasion. However, he didn't want to create another scene and ruin any salvageable joy in the night for his lot!

THE CAR PARK

Their traipse through the cheerful crowds and busy traffic - to the car park on the other side of the road had been a very quiet one. Well, with both of them feeling guilty and embarrassed - starting a conversation wasn't really a walk in the park! In fact, they'd barely even managed to meet eyes since they'd left the club.

On arriving at the dark parking lot ten minutes later, Jalal showed the old watchman his token and the pair then made their way to his car amongst the numerous others automobiles. Somewhere along the dimly-lit route, he'd spotted a few odd-looking chaps loitering around a car - but, he decided not to give it much thought and got going instead.

Once they'd reached the vehicle, the young man fished his keys out of his pocket to beep it open when he heard the shuffle of footsteps behind him.

With his instincts alerting him, Jalal immediately sensed trouble - and at that very moment, Jodha confirmed his suspicions with a startled scream 'JALAAAL...behind you!'

He spun around to discover the faces of four shoddy youths glaring down at him - brandishing four glistening lethally-sharp knives in their hands!

********************************************************************

INSIDE A MURKY STORE ROOM

'Ya Allah!' the young man heaved in exhaustion, as he staggered onto the dusty floor 'That's more misadventure in a day than I can care for! What a crappy start to the New Year!'

'You bet?' she thought - she'd witnessed enough violence that eve to last her a lifetime!

Still catching up on her breath, Jodha gradually sank down on the ground not too far from him - as she took in the sights of the dingy store room they'd cooped up in. God! It was a gloomy place indeed - defined by dirty cartons, broomsticks, some old rags and cob-webbed fuseboxes. Nevertheless, they had to make the best of what they could find! The secluded structure behind an elevator shaft in a quiet back-lane apartment block was the first resort they could find to hide from the armed rogues who'd been chasing them mercilessly.

'They wouldn't trace us here, na?' she panted faintly

'I hope not!' he thought 'No! They wouldn't' he uttered with feigned confidence 'Waise, thank God the watchman of this apartment block is missing! Otherwise, he wouldn't have let us in!'

She let out a long tired sigh 'Nah! I couldn't have run any more, Jalal...' the twenty minute marathon was more than enough 'If a watchman WAS here, bass usse jhooth bol deti...ki we're here to meet Mr. Srivinasan... there's bound to be a Srinivasan in every apartment block in Hyderabad!'

He was compelled to look up at her in near-surprise! He'd assumed she'd be a nervous wreck after the horrible near-death circumstances they'd just braved. However, with that matter-of-fact answer of hers he realized he'd underestimated her, yet again!

Even if the darkness obscured his vision, he unwittingly continued watching her - catching the outline of her features thanks to the light seeping in from under the door. Sensing a mild smile on her lips, he smiled back. It was their first cordial exchange since the episode at the club. Then, he suddenly remembered how it'd all started in the first place - and lost his smile yet again.

He glimpsed away in disgruntlement thereafter and straightened himself by sitting up as part of his ensuing sulk act - when his elbow unexpectedly brushed against the wall 'Arggghhh'

The frustrated young man cast an unhappy peek at his injured arm - the pain was beginning to gnaw away at skin and muscle now. It was surely worse than he'd thought. Slowly unbuttoning the cuff, he folded his sleeve up and felt the painful spot - as expected, blood was gushing out of the torn skin.

'Those bas***ds' Jalal swore under his breath - recollecting how the thugs had wrestled him to the ground and smashed his arm against a rock in order to curb his powerful punches!

When they'd asked him for his money, he was ready to part with it without much ado. Where they went wrong was when they demanded HER for her chain - that, and the keys to his silver Audi too! If not for Jodha's deafening pleas to make a dash for it sometime later, he might have still been embroiled in the brutal perilous clash with the attackers.

'Jalal' came her consequent soft echoes within the nearly pitch-black confines.

Drawing away from his wound, he warily looked up at her silhouette that was now inching closer to him. He noticed she had something in her hand, but thanks to the poorly lit ambience, he couldn't make out what it was.

'Wet wipes' she explained

Exhaling in vexation, Jalal eventually went on to accept the only available option of first-aid for his injury then!

'You know...' she spoke up after he'd wiped the blood off 'When I received those texts we weren't really on talking terms and Maan was the only one I knew...Maan stayed silent on my request...but, no one else knows trust me...later on, I'd forgotten about them totally...'

He stubbornly continued tending to his arm without turning in her direction. Oh yes, he'd guessed her mistake should have been unintentional - long ago. However, he did take his own time to acknowledge the explanation - to accept the facts - and to overcome his 'hurt'!

'I'm sorry' she reiterated - studying his face for whatever expressions she could detect 'The overlook wasn't deliberate...'

'What did those texts say about me?' he cut her - trying to appear unmoved

'They...they' Sigh! She took a deep breath 'They talked about how you use women... and... and...let's just say they were all very cheap things about you...'

'And did you believe it?' he'd blurted the significant doubt that'd been eating him up for so long 'Do you trust any of it now?' he stared her way for an answer!

Woah! She hadn't expected either that question OR his reaction. She didn't want to lie, but had to let him in on the truth gently too.

'No, NOT NOW...I don't trust any of it!' came her honest answer a whole minute later.

She could actually hear him breathe a massive sigh of relief that moment. Following that short discussion, he asked her nothing further about it, she explained nothing more - they didn't need to!

'Waise, I've been meaning to ask...' she decided it was her turn to interrogate him a minute later - seeing how it seemed to be the time for confessions and revelations 'What DID Shareef say that made you react that way...was that fight really necessary?'

'Let's just say he said many cheap things about you...' he frowned

Jodha was momentarily silenced - not by Shareef's misdeeds, but by Jalal's attitude. She'd never known such protectiveness from anyone other than her family - well, she'd never needed it. She didn't know why, but to witness this protective streak in an otherwise carefree Jalal brought about an unfamiliar feeling of warmth in her.

Oblivious to the soft smile that'd just appeared on her lips, he pursued dejectedly 'Anyway, Shareef...or whoever's doing it...why spread such rumours at all?'

'Jalal...' she interrupted his objections 'You're popular...and that always comes at a cost!' she broke out into an impish smile and upped the liveliness in her tone 'Hey! The first couple of weeks, when my popularity in the university grew, I'd made a few enemies too, remember?' she was obviously referring to HIS group

His stare took less than a second to transform into a gaze as the man delved on her words. He was impressed - REALLY impressed. The mischief in her tone and her unusual attempt to cheer him up had uplifted his spirits in a flash. He understood - all over again - why she'd taken his fancy. After all, she was such a refreshing personality! In fact, she appeared so delightful then - that he could have happily leaned forth and sealed the stirring moment by planting his lips against hers. Thankfully, the body didn't always act on the mind's impulses. So, he just broke out into a hearty smile instead 'Jodha...tum na...'

'I know!'
