I'm sorry for going back to Wednesday's episode and please, those of you who are not interested, just skip my comments.

I have to begin from Wednesday because I promised Abhay I would post on Wednesday episode.

First and foremost, Jodha did not know the "plan". Amply clear today.

In yesterday's episode, when Jalal announced the Talaq decision, Jodha was collected. She was not crying, or pleading, or angry, or shocked. But she was also not "calm". There is a difference between being calm and stoic. The difference lay in her eyes. It was present till she saw Jalal today taking off his disguise.

Jodha has been hurt so much in the past few days that she has crossed the threshold of palpable pain. We all have a threshold of pain beyond which we do not feel anything. We become detached, as if whatever is happening is happening to someone else. This is what happened with Jodha, what Abhay called "numb".

Jalal's announcement of marriage with Atifa was the tipping point. Till this point, she felt Jalal was just infatuated with Atifa and would return to her (Jodha) some day. She mentioned to Man Singh that Jalal was bhramit and so needed to be taken care of.

But when she learnt that Jalal was going ahead with marriage, she felt that he was serious about Atifa, which meant that he was serious about everything he had said to Jodha. This broke her like nothing else could.

Jodha always takes really harsh words from Jalal stoically. Whether it was Jalal telling her that he would not see her face even if she was dying or Jalal accusing her of zinakari and asking her to leave him. She never winced. She bore everything with her chin up - the true indication of warrior blood. This time too, she has borne all his harshness and withdrawn into herself rather than fight with him.

(Jalal always seems to talk of death and / or separation when he swings to an extreme with Jodha. It is as if he wants to get away from her as much as he can, in his anger. )

Radhika,

I wanted to read your take on that Episode...I have read all your posts, and the interesting convo with Maddy, Sindhu , Rashmi, Ayushi and all.. It's simply awesome...Keep writing..😊

The Women in Akbar's Life

From what I have seen in the show so far, women may have enjoyed certain perks and privileges but this was dependent very much on the mood of the emperor and his relationship status with them at the moment. Even not considering Jalal, we can say that each of the four main royal queens was dealt an unequal hand by fate.

Hamida Bano

Hamida Bano must have been 15 years old when Jalal was born to her. She traveled with her husband under highly treacherous conditions while carrying him and soon after his birth. She spent a greater part of her married life with Humayun in exile or in traveling from place to place due to misplaced fortune. She was widowed inher late twenties and was burdened with the duty of safeguarding a child king and a fledgling empire with enemies knocking at the doors constantly. Akbar faced many assassination attempts and conspiracies in his early years from trusted family and close associates. How difficult life must have been for her to live alone without a man in her life and having the responsibility of keeping Akbar just and upright, in spite of people trying to influence him otherwise and the trappings of absolute power.

Salima Begum

Salima Begum was married when she was around 17-18 to a man old enough to have been her father. She was widowed in her early twenties and Akbar married her out of gratitude towards his mentor, Bairam Khan and in order t o keep her and her young son safe.

But if we believe there was no relation between Akbar and Salima, except respect and friendship, then how tough life was to Salima too. To be bereft of the love of a husband and to have to care for a step-son as her own son. To watch women her age married and having babies and generally enjoying life with their husbands - how emotionally tough it must have been for her. How difficult it must have been for her to reach out to Jodha and treat her wih the love of a sister, when she could see as clearly as Ruq that Jodha was the first among equals.

Ruqaiya

Ruqaiya - Malika-e-Begum, Begum-e-Khas, harem incharge, apparently had it all - power, privilege, luxury and the close friendship of Jalal. She was his cousin, childhood companion, best friend and first wife. But what she never had was the love of a man in the real sense and the chance to be a mother. We may see the glass as half-full or half-empty. She perhaps didn't lack in material trappings but she was unfortunate in the matter of being loved like a woman.

Jodha

Jodha perhaps had it easier than the other 3. But her initial years in Agra were a torture, as she tried to adjust to a totally new lifestyle without the support of her husband.

  • How difficult it must have been for her to live in constant fear of her husband being killed by someone in the palace itself.
  • How difficult it must have been for her to accept the presence of other women in her husband's life.
  • How she must have cried when she lost quite a few babies in the early years of her marriage. How difficult it must have been for her to love and cherish a husband who was tyrannical and cruel to people he didn't care for.
  • How difficult it must have been for her to see two of her sons dying tragic deaths and the third rebelling against his own father.
  • How tragic it must have been for her to see her warrior husband ultimately succumbing to a common ailment.
  • How distressing it must have been for her to witness the power struggle between son and grandson, soon after her husband's demise.

We generally see these women as royal queens who never lacked for anything and were held in high esteem by Akbar. But if we take a closer look, their lives were not much better. They faced the same problems as everyone else and lived life the hard way.

Awesome..👏
