Friends, yesterday's episode was supposed to be this one where "Jodha consoles Jalal, and Ruq barges in on them and gets miffed to see them so close" ... or at least that was what the spoilers said! Well ... nobody consoled nobody because they were in such a happy place, both Jodha and Jalal, that there were no tears or melodrama. There were just companionable silences and teasing chats (bordering on their familiar banter, but completely without malice) ... and then there were ultra-long loving and quizzing gazes at each other. At first each one seemed to take a secret look at the other, when the other was not looking. But later their mutual gazes became simultaneous, bolder, more direct and they seemed to hold each other's eyes by the sheer force of their feelings.
It's hard for them - and for us too - to remember exactly all that was said by them in such an atmosphere of such emotion-drenched long silences. Words when they came out were like hasty attempts to ease the "tension" of the too long quietness between them. They seemed often content to just sit quietly near each other, and look at each other now and then ... but then one would find some subject to cut the unease with, and the other would latch on gratefully for something to reply, that could keep their intense feelings at bay.
I again had to see the recorded episode quite a few times to remember all the dialogues. But the overall lovely memory I had of yesterday's episode is still the silences and not the words. The beauty of their interaction yesterday was the quality of their togetherness, the comfort of the quiet companionship and the loaded feelings in their hearts that were making their way to their eyes. What all they said seemed just incidental.
My friend Jyoti SMS-ed me saying "It was a very nice epi, but they were talking too much about one subject - Ben - which could have been avoided". That was very true. Whenever they spoke to each other it was invariably about Ben. But then I want to be kind to both of them who are discovering love for the first time in their lives - and so I'd like to say that since they really didn't know what to talk about, they seemed to be searching for topics, and naturally Ben cropped up many times because that was the subject freshest in their minds and therefore easiest to talk about, I suppose?
And as frequently as they talked of Ben, they also bantered about her beauty being "jealousy -worthy" (even though she was a deadly vishkanya), and both of them were playing along with this theme of "Was Ben all that beautiful, really?". He kept saying she was, and Jodha kept asking if she really was? But both knew that neither Ben nor her beauty was a thorny topic between them any more. Talking of Ben just seemed to help dispel the awkwardness of the present moment.
Long ago, Lashy had written to me that Ben's entry into the serial was very important because it will manage to bring Jodha and Jalal together in a deeper way than ever before. Yesterday I saw how that same Ben, even after her role closure, was still helping Jodha and Jalal overcome the shyness of their first love and find something to talk about, amidst the uneasiness of having too much in the heart and not enough words or courage to pour it out.
đđđđ You have such lovely way with words, so right don't need to remember their words just silences spoke volums, for all the red lines here
One other important aspect of their chat togather was the moment when Jalal said how difficult it is to decipher Jodha, when she was both his saviour and also the one who gave him a dhakka when he entered her hojra ... it was as good as a sanket for me that he said this in passing, because the information from Zee last week did say Rahim would now decode Jodha's paigam and the truth of what Jodha wrote and what Maham lied is to shortly come to Jalal's knowledge.
Oh YESSS, ONLY then can the love story go forward
Jalal is with his new love is so fragile that Jodha's one unintended tana or brushing off will shatter his confidence, he has none now in matters of the heart cos of the "dhakka"
Jalal trusts Jodha with his life, but cannot still "WITH HIS HEART"
Jalal NEEDS to know Jodha did not lead him on, so when she opens up now he can be SURE of her feelings
Jalal will guard EVER opening up again about his feelings for Jodha with ANYBODY else apart from Jodha
Among the other things Zee said was that Ruq will get more miffed ( "ghamaasaan"?!), Maham will get even more exposed by the return of Shivani and Tejwant who will spill all, and Hakim and Mansingh would return too. Zee also said Sharif would now be pardoned by Jodha and come out of jail. Well Hakim and Mansingh came back yesterday itself, and Sharif is already eyeing his release, so we seem on track for the next week to see exactly these many events that Zee has foretold. All in all, after all this happens next week to "clear the air", the week after that may well see Jodha and Jalal in Marwari dress going on a long tour of the kingdom, leaving the kitchen politics of Agra behind for a while, and finding themselves closer with every passing step?
I hope they go on the trip AFTER Jalal learns the truth about THE LETTER. Only then can he go ahead fully with conveying his feelings. I REALLY REALLY REALLY do NOT want him to convey them in Agra
Where behind every pillar somebody is watching, where even his taking off jooties is a news
Both Jalal and Jodha need to be away from the Haram for any progress in their relationship
Okay now I'm going to enjoy myself writing about three key topics we saw yesterday ...
The Jodha-Jalal silences, punctuated by companionable banter, was beautiful!
Right from the moment the episode starts we have the interaction of Jodha and Jalal, a carryover from him saying yesterday that he wanted a private chat with Jodha. Yesterday you would have assumed he was going to discuss some heavy subject from the way he said with seriousness that he wanted a chat. But when he actually got down to it in the episode, it was just a search for something to say. The poor boy was so desperate to know if the feelings he now had for Jodha were reciprocated, that he had to find some way of communicating with her to delve her mind! So here's what he does ...
He hums and haws as he sits down to find something to say. Then he says "Was that wise the way you drank that zeher? You know something serious could have happened to you, don't you?" She replies "But nothing happened to you, isn't that right? That's enough for me!" He then says "What kind of way is this to confirm your accusations? " She says But I tried so many times to tell you about my fears, but you never listened. If you just didn't want to see the truth, what else could I do? I thought the only way I had was to make you listen by choosing the path that I did."
Jalal could not hide his admiration for her braveness, he asks Jodha if she does not fear anything?
He then changes the tack slightly "What to listen to, what to believe ... you women are so inscrutable ... you even callled me to your room and then gave me a dhakka when I actually came there! I's like waging a war to try and understand you women ... what you say, what you think, what you do." Jodha replies "No, I was never vague. I told you straight that Ben was a vishkanya but you never heeded me."
I wish Jodha had also said, I never lied about the letter, I hope you will learn the truth someday
Jalal then says "Yes in the case of Ben I thought you were jealous of her ... jealous of her closeness to me, jealous that she may take your audha, jealous that she may become "khas" to me ..." Jodha quickly reverts "No you thought wrong. I was never insecure aboout her taking my audha or any such thing." Jalal instantly asks "Then tell me, Jodha begum, why did you save my life?" He looks so directly into her eyes asking this question that she looks shifty in return. She returns "Why don't you think about why I may have saved you?". Now its his turn to look a bit shifty. He looks everywhere but at her as he tries to gather his words carefully " I thought ... it occurred to me ... maybe I thought ... that you saved me because you have given me place in your heart?". Jalal looks at Jodha so deeply, into her eyes, with this question that it hangs tantalisingly between them, but we never hear her answer to that because there's an interruption scene of Ruq trying to enter the room in vain.
Jalal missed big cue our Jodha Begum gave him SHE DID NOT DENY having given him place in her heart. Jodha of earlier days would have said emphatic NO, I only did it for my Bapusa, for Ammi Jaan etc.
The conversation then resumes after the Ruq entry-barring scene ... Jalal asks Jodha "But tell me, why did you hate Ben so much?" She says "Because she was a vishkanya!" Then he asks again "But that you came to know later, isn't it? But why did you hate her even before you knew that about her?" That stumps Jodha quite a bit as she tries to come up with a good answer. In the process she betrays exactly the jealousy that he's been wanting to hear. She says "Well ... I didn't like the way she dressed up. Does anyone wear such clothes, that too in front of other people's husbands!" Jalal looks just that wee bit like he's hiding a smile as he sees her indignation.
Wo bhi kisi aur ke pati ke samneđ¤Ł
Oh Jodha just stopped short of saying humare pati ke samne (BTW wasn't it Jalal who had designed the dress for Benđ)
Jodha then decides to become the questioner. She says "Ok, can I ask you what exactly you saw in Ben that made you so fascinated? After all in this mahal there are even more beautiful women?" He says deliberately "Well actually, she was very beautiful that the people in the mahal were themselves stunned!" Jodha is all bristly now. She says "What are you saying? She surely wan't so beautiful as all that?" He then puts a hand on his head and says "I can take a kasam, she was!". Jodha pulls his hand off his head in a trice. He is thrilled privately to see her so deeply affected by jealousy.
He says "Yes its true Ben was a deadly woman come here to assassinate me, but she was beautiful, no doubt." Jodha eyes change from upset to discomfort. Then she says "But what if she had bitten you?" He then completely disarms her - and me - by saying "There's only one woman who can do that to me and that is a Rajvanshi!". Slowly, ever so slowly, the seriousness on both faces breaks into reluctant smiles ... and then very broad smiles. It looks like two hearts are beating as one in that fabulous moment of joint mirth. They have both enjoyed the joke immensely and they both know what exactly they are talking about when they are talking about that "fiery Rajvanshi"!

Then Jalal decides to take leave of her as its late in the night. But she demurs and says she is feeling too stuffy in this room and wants a walk outside in the garden. He says "The Hakim has ordered you to rest" but she is insistent. She tries to stand up but sways alarmingly and knocks a vase over. He then steadies her as Moti also runs in saying she will go with Jodha for her walk. But Jodha challenges Jalal and says "You are my husband aren't you. Then why do you not take me out at all?". He tells Moti he will take care of Jodha and gingerly puts her hand across his shoulder, holds her other hand and leads her out into the garden with the delicate care of someone looking after a fragile doll!
Jodha did not want Jalal to leave at allđ Moti should not have volunteered, I guess now Moti needs to start taking the cuesđ
There in the outdoors, they both sit for a long time facing each other but not speaking a word, looking here and there and then at each other when the other is not looking ... till she again asks him (just to break the silence I suspect )"Can I ask you again, please answer truthfully, and not as an emperor, but did you really find Ben all that beautiful?" He says "Looks like you are in love with Ben. Even after her death, she is on always your mind?" Jodha says "That's no answer to my question." Then he puposely riles her up a bit by saying "Yes, actually I did find her a bit beautiful". He then enjoys seeing Jodha all fuming privately and trying to hide it. He hides his own half smile.
Seeing her shivering a bit, he then rises to bring some fire to where where they are sitting . They both spread their hands across the fire almost touching hands but not quite. What a beautiful shot that was.
She is then seen talking to herself "I wish , I wish he would say to me that I was more beautiful than Ben!" and he then thinks to himself "I wish, I wish, you knew what is in my heart. I wish you had never let Ben come into my life. I wish you would give no space for not just Ben but anyone to come in my life". He then rises to go away as her eyes start searching for him. He returns to drape a shawl across her shoulders tenderly.
They settle down to a silence, again looking now and again into each others eyes. What a masterful pair these two actors are. How many different expressions of love did I see in just their eyes, forget their countenances and body language. I have never seen two people so in love, the love dripping from their eyes, and yet not saying a word and just melting their feelings into a silence that spoke volumes for us viewers.
Hamada and JiJiAnga gave thanks to God to see these together in such exquisite harmony and their "Ameen" was echoed even in the hearts of us who were watching. Ruq was fuming as she took in this scene, and that added some more spice to my life because I have started disliking her intensely after that scene yesterday when she told Jodha "Ask for anything except Jalal!" Today Jodha can easily tell Ruq "Ask for anything except Jalal!" for Jalal was entirely Jodha's without any reserve!
Ruq and Maham are becoming too inflated with misplaced self-importance!
I've written so much on the Jodha-Jalal scene already so I ll just say a small bit here. Ruq got a slice of reality when a mere bandhi like Moti was able to tell her she couldn't enter Jodha's room - because Jalal was there with her. If Jodha was alone Ruq would have marched in without a care, but hearing that Jalal had said he wanted to talk "privately with Jodha" stopped her in her tracks. That was not what she wanted to hear at all.
She then frets and fumes in Maham's room rueing that she had listened to Maham's advice and got herself into such a pickle with Jodha and Jalal. Meanwhile Maham is entirely thrilled to tell a fretting Ruq that Jalal has "removed his footwear to enter Jodha's room and has been ensconced there for a long while and then also virtually carried Jodha into the garden". Ruq leaves in a huff.
Maham then tells the ever-eager Resham "That girl Ruq is double-minded. She is obliged to Jodha for saving Jalal but also miffed that this has brought Jalal closer to Jodha. Now it remains for me to exploit the ensuing "ghamaasaan!"
Two idiots, Maham and Ruq, all caught up in their misplaced own self-importance and unable to see past their own noses. Believe me, those snooty noses are going to soon get a good rub in the dirt!
I really wish to see the smirky sarcastic mocking derisive put-down looks wiped right off Mayhem's face
She will not go away so soon, I do not want her to either, I want to see her decline in detail, watch every insult and failure on her face
She always plotted with smirk having the maaj, that she can pull any of their strings anytime, I want her to plot with increasing fear & desperation
Mansingh and Hakim looked like Laurel and Hardy in the "happy family picture"!
I want to say less here also. Just a few points. I loved the fact that Mansingh and Hakim (they do look like Laurel and Hardy, don't they?), upon their return, ran to Hamida to escort them to Jodha's bedside to enquire after her health - instead of dutifully paying obeisance to the emperor first. And most of all I loved the fact that Jalal was so thrilled to hear they had done that.
Jodh is now Jalal's "love" and he would naturally, I suppose, want everyone to honour his love as much as he does? He goes there too as a delightful little family party is all surrounding Jodha - and Mansingh and Hakim are cluck-clucking at the goings-on when they were away. Jodha in turn praises their courage and assures them she is well.
Jalal comes there and in a sweet gesture first tells Jodha to stay rested and not get up. Then he praises three people for their courage - Hakim, Mansingh and Jodha. And then he says "Can all of you assemble at the Diwan-e-Khas where I want to make an announcement! And Jodha, if you can make it, I'd love for you to be there also?" She nods a ""Yes" eagerly. No doubt Jalal wants to give that Mansabdari to Mansingh and wants Jodha to be there when he does that for her nephew?
But did you all notice one thing: that group in Jodha's room seemed to be the really friendly part of Jalal's family, without any of the enemies present. I thought it was a picture worth becoming a beautiful painting for posterity. Will we ever again get such a shot of just the friendly part of the family happy together - without even one enemy in the room at that moment to spoil the mood?đđź
