A Forbidden Affair in the King's Chambers
"How is the war effort going general? How much longer till we declare victory in Delhi?" Jalal and Kabeer were busy discussing strategy before sunset. And Jodha was dying of anticipation of her sunset wedding.
"How much longer general? Your bride will die waiting in an armor, guarding the bitch wives of your asshole emperor. Hurry it up already!" she thought out loud. But the wrong person over heard.
"Just what the hell are you saying, you crazy woman?" Rukaiya Sultan screamed too close for comfort.
"I am sorry Begum-e-khaas. I didn't mean...I am just nervous. It's my wedding day".
For once, the stuck up queen smiled and doted on the bride-to-be. "I understand. I was like this too when I married Jalal. Granted I was ten years old so, grow up you! Your husband is the general of the Mughal army. You should never do anything to undermine him, understand?"
"Yes ma'am", she bowed.
"Anyway, if you want to see your groom this bad, buzz around the emperor's chambers. He should be there around this time of the day. But if you get caught, I don't know you".
The haughty begum was all too pleased with her bumbling guard to deflate her mood. She was even surprised with herself trying to help a nobody. However, she satisfied herself with the handy excuse that good relations with the general's wife might be helpful during trying times.
***********
Jodha tiptoed to the entrance of Jalal's tent. Placing an ear against the keyhole, she hoped to get some indication about the time of wedding amongst the useless war chatter.
"Yes, emperor. We're almost victorious there and Mewad is our next target", Kabeer placed a finger on his lips and signaled to the commotion outside. With silent steps, he approached the door and caught the culprit by her collar. The intruder still mid-air, he drew his sword and swung it close to her neck.
"How dare you eavesdrop on the great...Jodha?"
He let go of her shirt and the woman landed spat on the hard ground. Soon regret dawned over him and he sat right along with her, comforting her with a heed for the king just steps away.
"You okay, love? I was just too surprised. You aren't hurt anywhere, right?"
Jodha shook her head in a no and greeted the king.
"I am sorry your majesty and general sir. I was too impatient".
"Alright miss. I will leave you alone with your general. But don't take long, the wedding is about to start". Jalal smiled a small smile bemused by the quirky warrior woman in his general's life. He wondered why he'd never noticed her loud presence. It was almost as if she appeared in his vision just when she was possessed by another man. He'd take her in a heartbeat had she not been engaged to the general. But Kabeer's skills were more important than marrying a piece of eye candy. He pushed the thoughts of lust aside and lend his chambers to the all to embarrassed army man.
"Someday your antics are going to get me killed woman!" he yelled until his words were interrupted by her kiss of force. She tugged on his lower lip until he instinctively responded, sipping, nibbling, breathing into her.
"Stop", he suddenly demanded. "These are the king's chambers. Do you know what will happen if we get caught?"
She played ignorant.
"Death by dismemberment. Do you want your man's chocolate abs being cut up like cheap meat?" he blushed in remembrance of the little rebellion his goodie two shoes heart was just led into. Opposites attract definitely rang true with him and his kid of a lover.
"Ay, that doesn't make sense. My general is too good at his job to be dispend able. Plus, we'll nookie in the closet. I promise not to get caught". This woman was too forward but that's what he liked.
"Okay", he nodded reluctantly. "But a quickie. You can't take more than five minutes. And if Maham Anga barges in, you're just a random bandhi". Even amongst the commoners, the not-so-tal-ltales of Maham Anga refusing the notion of privacy were well known. Especially with the king and his general, she entered and exited their rooms as she pleased. Even though she acted like their over-possessive mother, atleast the general was aware of her ulterior motives unlike the blissfully ignorant king. Back to the love-hungry warrior woman.
"Oh ho! Look general, dare you compare me to a bandhi! I am your lawfully wedded wife", she patted his butt. "We're hitched for life and if you lay half an eye on anything in a salwar, even the devil won't find your corpse, understand?"
"Yes", he soothed his red arse and dotted on his possessive wifey.
"With such a gorgeous warrior queen making love to you, got hots for another woman? SAY SOMETHING THAT MAKES SENSE". He'd got her all hot and bothered just the way he wanted.
"Alright, okay. Don't got out with that just bitten look. All the boys will fall for you". He held her back by the wrist and she melted in place. Still, to maintain her tough credentials, she feigned calm.
"I know, right? Where else would you get a girl so in love? See you at the wedding!" She ran out in full speed, covering her features with a veil as she went.
"Haye, she pushes me over the cliff and leaves me hanging on a tree branch? Won't even help me up, this woman will be the death of me".
In a distant corner, the emperor and his begum were watching the giddy bride to be.
"Isn't she cute? Worry free like a child, reminds me of simpler times. I wish I could be like her Rukaiya. Enjoy myself without a care in the world", the emperor embraced his beloved in his arms but his heart was lost in the curious warrior woman.
"Jalal, do you really think she's happy? I've seen her for the past 14 years. I know that look, the one she makes when she greets him after battle. When he's got the blood of the enemy on his limbs, she wipes it clean with her kisses. And when she has to slay intruders in the harem, she puts on a brave face for his sake. But I can only imagine what it must feel like to take a life. You and I, we're jaded people. We understand that the crown is almighty. And we protect it because we've something to gain. But that girl, she's got everything to lose in our bloody struggle for power. She is bearing with our tyranny because of him. Her love for him has kept her going. It's quite fascinating. I usually won't forgive a person who wrongs me. But with her, I can let go of murder because she's that pitiful".
Rukaiya said what she had to say in order to end the conversation but she didn't expect what came next from Jalal.
"Seeing them together makes me envious...of them and their love. I want it, I crave it, I must have it. But, she's the general's wife. If she wasn't, I would marry her this second".
"Jalal?" All the color faded off the Begum's face. She stood in shock as the emperor burst in to roars of laughter.
"I am joking", he said. But was he? Even though Jalal reassured her a thousand times, for some reason, Rukaiya's heart would not believe him. Her unrest told her, his words weren't in jest.
